His great contribution to succeeding gener ations sprang from his awareness that the struggle in every age is not primarily in the realm of the physical and material. The ultimate battle is for the whole man. His life was devoted to achieving right thinking about the almost mystic a l c o n n e c tion between body, mind and spirit. He considered it vital to the survival of the nation. This very thought provoking biography of a prophet, whose life and thought have influenced thousands and who still inspires men today, can b e co m me nd ed f or i ts broad appeal to readers of widely differing interests." AGRICOLA AND THE CONQUEST OF THE NORTH., Hanson, W.S.
25 Hanson, W.S. AGRICOLA AND THE CONQUEST OF THE NORTH.
B.T. Batsford, London, 1987, first edition.
210 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0713406070 B&w maps, plans, photographs. "Under the governorship of Agricola (AD 77-84) the Romans extended their conquest of Britain to North Wales, northern Britain and, with the vi ctory at Mons Graupius, to northern Scotland. In this thorough - yet eminently readable - reassessment of the literary, epigraphic and archaeological evidence, William Hanson shows just how this rapid progress was achieved and at the same t i m e c o n s iders how far the governor himself was responsible for the Roman successes. The major theme running through his study is that the exceptionally full literary evidence, in the form of Tacitus' biography of Agricola, should not be g i ve n un du e w ei gh t against the archaeological evidence - particularly as Tacitus was writing about his own father-in-law. Indeed, the book's conclusion is that, contrary to the impression deliberately created by Tacitus, Agricola himself was n ot a maj or fi gur e o f h is day and his achievements in Britain were in no way extraordinary. In particular it shows that the effects of the brief Roman presence in Scotland was negligible. Throughout, Dr. Hanson....uses the latest archaeolo gic al ev iden ce to full adv anta ge in constructing this period of British history under the Romans. In particular, he is able to draw on his experience excavating the important Agricolan site at Red House, Corbridge and the recently discovered Agri col an fort at Elg inhau gh, j ust o uts ide Edinburgh." Previous owner's small stamp on front pastedown, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket is price clipped, has light rubbing, light edge wrinkling - mainly at top of sp ine, soft cr ease alo ng t op edg e of r ear pa nel. Very Good+/Very Good

New York Dorset 1992 0880297182 / 9780880297189 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
352 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). "(O)ffers a very different kind of tour to the armchair traveler. Wander through the haunted castles and cottages of Europe with Hans Holzer, the world's most famous psychic investigator, and explore a full range of psychic phenomena from the spirits of the British Isles to the haunts of Imperial Vienna. In England, Anne Boleyn's legendary ghost walks headless within the Tower of London; a procession of transparent monks appears in the Cathedral of Winchester, where no monks have trod since the sixteenth century; and Bloody Queen Mary still visits the four-poster bed where she slept in the dark days of 1553. At Kilkea Castle in Kildare, it is said that the Wizard Earl and his companions ride at night and will return someday from the beyond to 'put things right in Ireland'. Room No. 2 in the Hotel de l'Europe in Avignon holds a shocking surprise for the unwary guest; and in Paris, No. 3 avenue Montaigne offers a special concert of ghostly piano music from a spectral grand. Ghost occur wherever great tragedy has left an unfortunate person stranded between the next world and this one, someone who has not yet been freed from their emotional turmoil. The true accounts presented in this book are based on Dr. Holzer's personal investigations." One page leaf with two very small scollops at fore-edge. Dust jacket has very light rubbing, minor browning to inside edges.

London B.T. Batsford 1947 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
184 pp, 9" H. B&w and colour plates, including frontispiece, b&w floor plans. "James Lees-Milne sets out to show of what the work of Robert Adam and his three brothers really consisted, from what sources it was derived, what contemporary architects were affected by it, and what its influence was overseas. Using information from letters, diariees and records of the times, some of it hitherto unpublished, (he) traces the biographies of the Brothers Adam from their beginnings in Scotland to their eventual position as the most fashionable and influential architects and designers in Britain. He then proceeds to a critical examination of their work in England, Scotland and Ireland - their town houses and country houses, squares and terraces, ceilings, furniture and monuments. Next, there is an assessment of the work of the Adam's contemporaires and rivals, among them Wyatt, Taylor, Holland and Leverton; and a succeeding section deals with the Adam influence as it spread to Ireland, America, Russia and Sweden. A final chapter gives a short account of the lives and individual contributions of the Adams' collaborators - artists and craftsmen such as Chippendale, Angelica Kauffmann, Zucchi, Joseph Rose and Biagio Rebecca. Very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, three light edge/corner bumps. Dust jacket has browning at top edge of flaps, light edge wear/wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, several very small tears at top of spine, very small red ink stain on front panel.

"Ever since its creation in the mid fifteenth century, Roslyn Chapel has cast a mesmerising spell over all who have visited it. Nestling in an exquisite glen barely se ven miles from the centre of Edinburgh, it exudes an extraordinary atmosphere, serene yet charged, as if it holds the secret of some vast, unearthly mystery. Almost 600 yers after its creation it remains an enigma that continues to confoun d a n d i n t rigue thousands of people, inspiring stories of The Knights Templar, the Holy Grail and a myriad of esoteric beliefs. Now, with the film of Dan Brown's best-selling 'The Da Vinci Code', Rosslyn is set to capture the imagination of c ou n tl es s o th er s. In this book, Roddy Martine sifts through mounds of unfounded conjecture and fantasy to make sense of it all. 40 Nickless, Will. THE NITEHOOD.
Oliver & Boyd, Edinburgh, 1966, first edition.
136 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w illustrations by the author. "Mr Harris, (a rat) who has come into money, is eager to improve the social tone of his friends and neighbours, and to win for himself the recognition of an esta blished place in society; he aspires to a knighthood. His efforts to enlighten the deeply conservative little animals around him meets with little success: how he fares in his more ambitious aim is told in the pages of this story. Assist e d b y t h e ingenious poet (and valet, Beddoes Waterbrook, a rabbit) and by the accidental cross purposes that occur in the larger world of the Others, strange things happen and curious things emerge....To suspend disbelief and begin the story is t o e nt e r a ne w world: a world separate but intertwined with that of our everyday experience. There is a cricket match, of which the strangest thing is perhaps that it remains unrecorded by Neville Cardus, for it is impossible to imagine him ab se nt on su ch a n o cc asion. Then there is Old Beak and Claws (the owl) and his collection of snuff boxes....It may not always be, as Otter Mullet the fishmonger remarks on one occasion, 'good natural history', but it is as well to remem ber some tim es tha t t her e a re o the r sorts of truth (and the poetic not least among them) that are even more important to human beings than that particular variety found within the covers of text books...." Publisher's label (John Baker) glue d ov er or igin al publ ishe r's name (Oli ver & Boyd) on title page, previous owner's name/date on rear pastedown, small bump to bottom corner of both boards, light wrinkling and slight fading at bottom of spine, minor edge wear.
