VIMY., Berton, Pierre.
21 Berton, Pierre. VIMY.
Toronto McClelland and Stewart 1986 0771013396 / 9780771013393 First Printing Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
336 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). Pictorial endpapers, b&w maps. "On a chill Easter Monday in 1917, with a blizzard blowing in their faces, the four divisions of the Canadian Corps in France did what neither the British nor the French armies had been able to do in more than two years of fighting. They seized and held the best-defended German bastion on the Western Front - a muddy scarp known as the Vimy Ridge. The French, who had lost 150,000 men trying to take the ridge, didn't believe it could be done. Nor did the Germans; even the British were skeptical. But the Canadians triumphed. They went over the top at dawn; by lunch time, most of the ridge was in their hands - at a cost of only ten thousand casualties. How could an army of civilians from a nation without a military tradition secure the first enduring Imperial victory in thirty-two months of warfare? The answer, as Pierre Berton makes vividly clear in his haunting account, was precisely that these men were civilians, with flexible minds unfettered by military rules." Minor wrinkling at top of spine. Dust jacket is price clipped, has very light edgewear/wrinkling.

THE ROYAL HORSE ARTILLERY. FAMOUS REGIMENTS SERIES., Bidwell, Shelford. Introduction by Lieut.-General Sir Brian Horrocks.
24 Bidwell, Shelford. Introduction by Lieut.-General Sir Brian Horrocks. THE ROYAL HORSE ARTILLERY. FAMOUS REGIMENTS SERIES.
Leo Cooper, London, 1973, first edition.
115 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0850521386 B&w photographs, maps, reproductions. Music for Regimental Slow March, Trot Past, Gallop Past. "Many people's visual image of the Royal Horse Artillery is probably confined to the dazzling equestrian performances of the King's Troop which annually entrance schoolboys of all ages at the Royal Tournament. How many people pause to wonder why, in the reign of Queen Elizabeth II, there should be a King's Troop? How many stop to consider why indeed there should have been a separate formation of mounted artillery in the British Army at all? Brigadier Bidwell answers these and most other questions about the Royal Horse Artillery, and as an experienced author, as e d i t o r o f the Royal United Services Institute Journal and an ex-Horse Gunner himself he could hardly be better suited to his task. From their formation in 1793 to the present day the Royal Horse Artillery have had but one objective - to exc e l. Th ey a re in deed a corps d'elite but a corps d'elite whose claim to distinction is based entirely on merit and, as Brigadier Bidwell shows, for nearly two hundred years they have rigidly adhered to their self imposed standard of excellence . He has pa id wor t hy tribute to a body of men whose name will shine forever in the annals of British military history." Very light cigarette odor, very light browning to pages and edges of text block, faint water marks at top/bottom edge of b oa rds - mai nly on rear b oar d. Dust jacket has very light browning, small closed tear at top of rear hinge, very light edge wrinkling, water marks at edges - mainly inside top edge, old price label on front flap. Very Good-/Good+

THE STORY OF THE ROYAL TOURNAMENT., Binns, P.L., Lieutenant-Colonel.
25 Binns, P.L., Lieutenant-Colonel. THE STORY OF THE ROYAL TOURNAMENT.
Gale & Polden, Aldershot, 1952, Ist edition.
156 pp, 8vo (8 5/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Results of 1952 Royal Tournament laid-in. B&w photos, reproductions. "Fifty-three Tournaments have passed since the first 'Grand Assault-at-Arms' at Islington for the benefit of the volunteers of London and any Regular troops stationed 'within convenient range'. In 1883 the declared object was simply the promotion of skill-at-arms, but gradually the charitable side asserted itself until both aspects were recognized as being of equal importance. Both objects have been successfully achieved. This story tells of those early days when the sword, lance and bayonet were the main weapons of the Queen's soldiers, and describes the means by which the Tournament encouraged their skilful use. It traces the gradual decline of these weapons from the appearance of the early Maxim and Gatling guns which were diplayed in mimic warfare in the presence of enthusiastic audiences at Islington. In addition to showing development in arms and warfare, the Tournament has year by year demonstrated the progress made in the art of training the Service man in his profession..." Small surface scuff on half-title page near gutter, light wrinkle at top/bottom of spine, one tiny corner bump, very small dent to top edge of both boards, minor edge wear. Dust jacket is price clipped, has small chips and tears with creases, light edge wear/wrinkling, light to moderate rubbing/soiling on rear panel. VG -/G-

It is a study of the psychosociological tensions that affected these young people - a group of intelligent and able men who were only partially in control of their destinies, yet had the ambitions, the achieve m e n t m o t i v ation, possibly the group skills and personal innovation, to strive and struggle through the dramatic events they experienced. We will come to learn a good deal about these four men (and the mother of one of them) - to see their fr us tr at i on s, t he ir loneliness, their anomie, their failures. At the same time their enthusiasms, their successes, their hopes and dreams, come through constantly, giving a poignancy to their story that transcends the 'facts' themselves. Th e s tuf f o f thi s s tud y i s a n extensive series of letters from the lieutnants back to their families during the height of the hostilities....this book also draws on an intriguing new method of study whose name is content anlaysis. A parti cula r br anch of th is c onte nt a nlay sis field is explored here - the use of the computer to analyze the content of particular texts. All the letters....have been entered into a computer and treated to a sophisticated content anaysis program t hat c onsid ers t hem alo ng ni nety- seven sepa rate psychosociological paramters. The resulting glimpses further help to explain some of the critical differences hinted at in the texts themselves....This fresh view of historical method is elabo rated in dat a in t he A ppen dixes. THE IMPERIAL WAR MUSEUM BOOK OF 1918, YEAR OF VICTORY. PAN GRAND STRATEGY SERIES., Brown, Malcolm.
30 Brown, Malcolm. THE IMPERIAL WAR MUSEUM BOOK OF 1918, YEAR OF VICTORY. PAN GRAND STRATEGY SERIES.
Pan, London, 1999, 2nd printing.
392 pp, 7 3/4" H, soft cover. ISBN 0330376721 B&w plates. "1918 was probably the most dramatic and decisive year in British military history. In the spring there was a fear that Britain might have to evacuate her troops from the continent and lo se the war. In the summer came the great turnaround, and by autumn the German armies began to retreat. In November 1918 the First World War was over. This book tells the story of an amazing year through the authentic voice of the British s o l d i e r , a year in which, remarkably, the casualty rates were even higher than those of 1916 and 1917, the years of the Somme and Passchendaele." 31 Brown, Malcolm. THE IMPERIAL WAR MUSEUM BOOK OF THE SOMME.
Pan, London, 1997.
380 pp, 7 3/4" H, soft cover. ISBN 0330352202 B&w plates, maps. "This book offers a remarkably fresh perspective on the bitterly fought 1916 campaign; it also describes the later battles of the Somme in the Great War's final year, 1918. Using hi therto unpublished evidence from the archieves of the Imperial War Museum, it tells its powerful and dramatic story through the letters and diaries of those who were there. (The author) has woven the many and varied accounts of well over a h u n d r e d participants - mainly British, but with not few Germans - into a rich tapestry of experience, so that the book reads less like a conventional history and more like a war novel. The characters come from almost every rank, from general t o or di na ry s o ldier, from a captain who could write, 'It's a marvellous war', or 'Hardship be damned! It's all one long blaze of glory', to a private whose attitude was, 'There is not much glory these days in dying for your country'." Interior - cl ean an d t igh t with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - book lightly cocked, two small corner creases, multiple creases on spine, very light edge wear, small area of surface paper loss on rear cover due to label removal, a few tiny sc uff s on rea r co ver.
