THE BIG PUSH: A PORTRAIT OF THE BATTLE OF THE SOMME., Gardner, Brian.
29 Gardner, Brian. THE BIG PUSH: A PORTRAIT OF THE BATTLE OF THE SOMME.
Cassell, London, 1961, first edition.
177 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs, maps. "At half past seven on the morning of the first of July 1916, along a front extending for eighteen miles in the valley of the Somme, an intensive bombardment which had conti nued since dawn lifted, and fourteen divisions of British troops stumbled out of their trenches to attack the enemy. This was the climax of Sir Douglas Haig's carefully conceived plan to break the interminable deadlock of trench warfare on th e W e s t ern Front, and score a resounding and dramatic victory over the German forces. Haig's design foundered within a few hours among the defences of Fricourt, La Boisells, and Thiepval, at the appalling cost of twenty thousand British soldier s k il le d an d thirty-five thousand wounded. - But the official dates for The Battle of the Somme are from 1st July to 18th, November 1916. The 'Big Push' went on, the preliminary bombardments, the attacks, the horrifying slaughter - every single c as ual ty be ing measured in terms of individual pain, misery, and sacrifice. Belief in the High Command that prolonged shelling must reduce an entrenched enemy to inertia and impotence, easy prey for advancing infantry, died hard. It persiste d t hro ugho ut the aut umn and into the following year, when the same ghastly pattern was repeated at Passchendaele. It was not fully discredited till the full potential of armoured vehicles was realized and military concepts, bred in minor theat res of w ar be for e th e tur n of the century, were rejected. - (This book) provides a critical, and immensely readable analysis of the policy, planning, and action of the British and French armies at the Battle of the Somme, a battle in which the cas ualti es of the Briti sh arm y alone exceeded those suffered by it during the whole of the Second World War. An important historical account of a great military blunder, it is also a vivid portrait of the tragedy, the unspeakable horror, and t he co urage, which are commo n to an y war at any time, but which were peculiarly intensified in France and Flanders from 1914 to 1918." Book is lightly cocked, has light edge wear at top/bottom of spine and at corners, light wrinkling at top/bo ttom o f spine , light brow ning on edges o f text block. Dust jacket has been price clipped, has moderate edge wear, tiny chips/tears at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, light soiling at top/bottom edges, two scuffs on rear panel, old tape on inside of top/ bottom o f spin e. 345 pp, 8vo (9 1/4" H). Map endpapers, b&w photographs, maps. "Lieutenant General Guy Granville Simonds was one of the Second World War's most dynamic strategists and commanded enormous respect from British generals such as Bernard Montgomery and Alan Brooke. (This book) tells the whole story for the first time, tracing Simonds's family origins and detailing his postwar career as Canada's top military man. The focus, though, is on Simonds's campaigns in World War II. Graham takes us from the rocky shores of Sicily to the fierce fighting in the Dutch polders, examining the military and political infighting that seemed to dog every hard-won mile of Simonds's successful march into the German Rhineland." 31 Harclerode, Peter. Foreword by General Sir John Hackett. ARNHEM: A TRAGEDY OF ERRORS.
London Caxton 2000 1840671467 / 9781840671469 Reprint Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good-
192 pp, large 8vo (9 3/8" H). B&w photographs, maps. "Operation 'Market Garden' remains one of the most spectacular and controversial battles of the Second World War. It was a bold plan, aimed at shortening the course of the war dramatically. Key bridges in Holland seized in advance by a daring airborne 'coup de main' would be the means to a surprise thrust into the German industrial heartland. On the fiftieth anniversary of the operation, (the author) has pieced together an important new view of what was a considerable failure. Existing accounts direct most of the blame at XXX Corps, and two divisions in particular, for failing to push the ground advance forward. This new work sets out to provide an objective and realistic appraisal of why things went wrong - and who in truth should have borne the responsibility. Why, for example, were demands for proper signals equipment for the airborne troops ignored, with predictable consequences? Why was intelligence pointing towards the fatal presence of the 9th and 10th SS Panzer Divisions ignored before the operation? And why, with Allied air forces in a position to dominate the skies above the battlefield, was air support so lacking and ineffectual? While some of the questions needed for a definitive judgement can never be answered, this book represents an important step towards redressing the balance of criticism and allowing a new view of the bloody battles for Arnhem and Oosterbeek." Minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling, very small hole in rear flap fold.

London Victor Gollancz 1979 0575026200 / 9780575026209 First British Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
181 pp, 8"H. "Coin-collecting can be a dangerous hobby in the United States. One important collector has just been killed in a car crash. His niece, who inherits, takes her uncle's valuable collection to her lawyer, Donald Roback, and Roback, a collector himself, realises they are fakes. So when were the genuine coins switched, and by whom? And was the car crash genuinely an accident? When he asks that last question, Roback also begins to wonder whether other recent 'accidents' to collectors were quite what they seemed: one drowned, though a good swimmer; two burned to death in their home. Roback has another hobby: detection. And now he begins to investigate. There are one or two very nasty customers among the dealers: in particular, one Alvin Andred, whose place of business is a fortress, guarded not only by armoured doors and electronic eyes but also by vicious thugs with guns. But Roback most ingeniously outsmarts him; and Andred plans a horrifying revenge; and the action builds up to a cataclysmic climax. This is a fast-paced and very tense mystery, which challenges Roback's intelligence and endangers his life. As a bonus we learn a lot about the world of the numismatist. And the author is a judge, who draws upon his own legal experience as inspiration for his novels, and for their detail." Minor wrinkling and sun fading at top edge of spine. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling, a few very small discolored areas on rear flap.

"Formed as heavy cavalry for Cromwell's spartan army (The Blues) have soldiered with the same steady qualities for over three centuries. For the c harge of a squadron of the Royal Horse Guards is no light thing: at Dettingen and Warburg, Waterloo and Tel-el-Kebir, many an enemy fell to the heavy cavalry swords. Sir Garnet Wolsely once asked a badly wounded trooper of The Blues what h a d h a p p e n ed to his assailant. 'I cut him in two, Sir,' was the immediate reply. The Blues fought on foot at Abu Klea, where their action in closing the square saved the column but cost them their colonel; used machine guns to deadly effect i n t he G re at W ar ; were the first troops into Brussels in 1944 (something of a race, one leading armoured car was commanded by a steeplechaser, another by a Master of Foxhounds); and even resorted to donkeys in Cyprus. Amalgamated with The Roy al D rag oon s i n M arc h 1 969 The Blues and Royals, as the new Regiment is now known, may still be seen on ceremonial duties outside Whitehall; it would be wise, however, not to forget their fighting record."
