HENRY YEVELE, c 1320 to 1400: THE LIFE OF AN ENGLISH ARCHITECT., Harvey, John H.
21 Harvey, John H. HENRY YEVELE, c 1320 to 1400: THE LIFE OF AN ENGLISH ARCHITECT.
London B.T. Batsford 1946 Second Edition Good Fair
86 pp, 9" H. B&w photographs, reproductions, drawings, floor plans, colour frontispiece. "Henry Yevele's life ranged roughly from 1320 to 1400, a period during which the architectural experiments of the previous century gradually became crystallised in the enduring national style which, for want of a better term, the textbooks call 'Perpendicular'. At the time of his apprenticeship, the new fashion had been devised, but not mastered, and many patrons of art must have been reluctant to find money for costly experiements, so long as the final effect was in doubt. Only the appearance of Perpendicular masterpieces would be convincing; and for the making of masterpieces the first requisite is a master. The master, a truly great one, was at hand, and his name was Henry Yevele. This book, which brilliantly surveys one of the greatest periods of architectural achievement in the history of our race, is the first full-length biography of an English architect of the Middle Ages. With a wealth of detail and a balanced critical insight, John Harvey convinces us that, throughout the period, Yevele was giving to English architecture a unity and strength comparable to the qualities with which his friend, Chaucer, was endowing our language. It includes a great deal of recent research never before brought together, and is richly illustrated with plans and details, and by views of the work of Yevele and his contemporaries." A few very small foxing marks on pastedowns, two sharp creases down the front free endpaper - very soft impression of creases up to page x, tiny dent at bottom edge of boards, slight fading to spine and hinge color and also at top edge of boards, ver light edge wear/soiling. Dust jacket has pieces missing at topand bottom of spine, edge creases, several small edge tears and very small chips, some light browning, some soiling on rear panel, protected in a mylar sleeve.

22 Harvey, John. CONSERVATION OF BUILDINGS.
Toronto University of Toronto Press, 1972 0802019374 / 9780802019370 Very Good Very Good-
240 pp, large 8vo (9 3/8" H). B&w photographs. "Mr. Harvey (a professional architect who has been trained and has specialized in conservation) is no theorist and takes the view that contemporary human needs are important and that buildings or groups of buildings must be conserved to accommodate some part of their original function, and must also be regarded in the context of their surroundings. He divides his book into three sections: What to Save and How to Save It (The Town, The Village, The Church and Churchyard), Craftsmanship and Materials, and Continuing Conservation (The Past, the Present and the Future). In these sections building conservation is looked at with an experienced, scholarly but essentially practical view. The book concludes with appendices and notes on sources...enriched with fifty-two photographs, showing conservation at work in the hands of living craftsmen, at Oxford, Winchester and elsewhere, adding much of beauty and value to the text." Book slightly cocked, some light fading to color on top of text block - also a small liquid mark, minor scuffs and discoloration on boards. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling, light wear at top of spine and flap-folds, slight fading to spine color, minor soiling on front panel.

26 Hubbard, R.H. Foreword by Her Excellency, Jeanne Sauve. AMPLE MANSIONS: THE VICEREGAL RESIDENCES OF THE CANADIAN PROVINCES.
Ottawa University of Ottawa Pres 1989 0776602772 / 9780776602776 First Edition Fine Very Good+
237 pp, oblong (9 1/4" H x 12 1/4" D). Profusely illustrated with b&w and colour photographs, repro-ductions. "The viceregal residences of the Canadian provinces mirror the idiosyncrasies of their inhabitants, and the tastes and talents of the architects, builders, gardeners, furniture makers and decorators who created them. In 'Ample Mansions' you will see the finest - and sometimes the worst - of Canadian style. There's no shortage of pomp in our viceregal history, but Dr. Hubbard's scholarly and sprightly text goes behind the scenes too, where there's plenty of room for rot and mildew, plugged drains and erratic staff. There are ample mansions crumbling from neglect, ample mansions consumed in conflagrations, ample mansions falling victim to political spats - and ample mansions rising in new splendour." Fine book. Dust jacket has three small areas of minor rubbing on rear panel.

Here she discusses the entire range of Erickson's work, assisted by 112 stunning photographs, 40 in full colour. Using her intimacy with the material to full advantage, (she) makes the inside story of (his) celebrated buildings an exciting adventure, but (it) has even more to offer. 29 Jencks, Charles, essays by. (Robert Stern.) ROBERT AM STERN: SELECTED WORKS. ARCHITECTURAL MONOGRAPHS NO 17.
Academy Editions, (London, 1991).
144 pp, 4to (12" H), soft cover with self-flaps. Profusely illustrated in color and b&w with photos, drawings, plans, elevations. "Robert Stern's work as an architect is indivisible from his abiding concern with history and historical style. He regards Post-Modernism not as a random recycling of past styles, but as a necessary liberation from what he calls the 'perennial present' of the Modern Movement. In the four essays reproduced in this Monograph he urges contemporary architects to widen their vocabulary, to learn from the past in order to 'reunite current production with the traditions that a previous generation tried so hard to subvert'. The 33 projects featured here reveal the range of influences which have in formed Robert Stern's projects and buildings: from the Lutyens and Kahn inspired Lang and Westchester houses of the early 70s to later 'Shingle Style' solution such as the Lawson and Marblehead residences. Also featured are a number of larger scale buildings such as the Mexx International Headquarters in the Netherlands and the Disney Casting Center in Florida which have consolidated Stern's reputation over the last five years." Interior - small area of light soiling on half- title page, bottom of inside front hinge cracked. Exterior - light edge wear, rubbing to glossy covers - no color loss, spine flat and uncreased. VG-

127 pp, 4to (12" H), soft cover with self-flaps. Profusely illustrated in color and b&w with photographs, drawings, plans. "The recent projects featured in this monograph chart another stage in the career of this architectural chameleon, now in his ninetieth year, and only serve to demonstrate his enthusiasm and propensity for new ideas and forms. In an informal interview with Frank Gehry and Jeffrey Kipnis, he discusses the accumulation and generation of these ideas through interaction with his contemporaries, including Frank Gehry himself and Peter Eisenman. The volume also reveals the methods of construction and engineering which are devised to realise the latest built forms, explained in several texts by Philip Johnson and his colleagues. London Academy Editions 1996 1854904531 / 9781854904539 First Edition Very Good+ Very Good+ Signed by Author
344 pp, folio (13 1/4" H). Signed on half title page: "Moshe Safdie / March 1997". "Influenced by the diverse cultures of Canada, Israel and the USA, Moshe Safdie's architecture displays a richly evolving tectonic and spatial sensibility. During 30 years of practice, he has designed public institutions, housing and mixed-use complexes, and developed designs for both existing urban districts and entirely new citities. In this monograph more than 40 of his projects are illustrated with spectacular photography, original design sketches and text. These works include his seminal Habitat project for the Canadian Expo '67, the National Gallery of Canada, Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and Vancouver's Library Square in Caada; the Yad Vashem Children's Holocaust Memorial, the Restoration of the Jewish Quarter, Mamilla Center and Hebrew Union College in the city of Jerusalem; the Skirball Museum and Cultural Center in Los Angeles; and the urban designs for Montreal, Senegal, Singapore and the new city of Modi'in in Israel. Together, they demonstrate the depth of Safdie's work, and an architectural vocabulary full of light and colour. In his essay 'The Language and Medium of Architecture' and in an interview with Wendy Kohn, Moshe Safdie discusses his architecture and influences. Each of the essays, by Michael Sorkin, Paul Goldberger, Witold Rybczynski and Peter G. Rowe, covers a different facet of Safdie's architectural oeuvre." Two tiny dents at top edge of rear board, very minor edge wear. Dust jacket has light rubbing, minor edge wear/wrinkling.

190 pp, oblong 8vo (9" H x 11 3/4" D), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0921254482 Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, reproductions. "There has never been another theatre-building boom like the one occasioned by the explosive success of t he movies in the 1910s and 1920s. In Montreal alone, dozens of new theatres were built, not plain shoeboxes like modern cinemas, but huge and ornate halls with great domes glowing on distant ceilings and dizzying decorative schemes on the w a l l s . T hey were dream palaces, where ordinary people (for the mere price of a ticket) could sit amidst splendour and watch great dramas and romances unreel on the silver screen. This is the story of Montreal's movie palaces, as great and or na te a s an y o n the continent, of the businessmen and architects and craftsmen who built them, the masses who flocked to them, of the glory days they knew in their glamorous reign and the hard times they faced with the rise of TV. Dane Lanken spe nt twe nt y y ea rs st udying Montreal's movie palaces, interviewing the people who were there, searching for rare and previously unpublished archival photographs, and commissioning new views - while the theatres still stood - from leading arch itec tur al p hot ogra phe rs B ria n Merrett and Julie Greto. The result is a comprehensive and richly illustrated social, artistic, architectural and corporate history of an exuberant and little known era in Montreal's history." 118 pp, large 8vo (9 7/18" H). Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, plans, elevations. "From 1876 to 1915, Edward James Lennox was a formidable force in Toronto's architectural community. Many of his buildings are still landmarks in a city that continues to evolve. Born and educated in Toronto, Lennox looked to the past for inspiration but was never captured by it. His prototypical Annex house on Madison Avenue, Old City Hall, and Casa Loma bear witness to his technical expertise and aesthetic sensibilities. Through text and illustrations, this volume tells the story of a resolute architect whose vision helped shape an emerging city, and who in his time was called the 'builder of Toronto'." Faber and Faber, London, 1943, 2nd impression.
280 pp, 8vo (8 13/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w plates. "Early in the eighteenth century Russia, like Japan, in the nineteenth, suddenly decided to adopt Western ideas and to extract herself from the slough of darkness and mediaevalism in which for many centuries she had been plunged. This wrench, carried out with that magnitude and ruthless, exaggerated completeness which has characterized all Russian revolutions, was inaugurated by the titanic Peter the Great - who buil t a n e w c a pital, St. Petersburg (now Leningrad) for the purpose - and brought to fulfillment by his successors, that series of flamboyant and high-spirited Empresses. Among them Peter's daughter, Elizabeth Petrovna, was the most frivolous, c er t ai n ly t he be st -looking and certainly the least known today. Mr. Marsden's fascinating book brings the St. Petersburg of Elizabeth's time vividly before us. It was mainly from France and Italy that she and the other Russian autocrats of th e eig ht een th cen t ury dr ew the fashionable painters, architects, actors, musicians and others who designed the glittering 'mise en scene' against which the changing tableaux of this budding Versailles were posed. But in spite of the stupe ndou s roco co pala ces , th e feve rish display and extravagance, the often highly artistic gaiety (the beginnings and gradual development of the Russian ballet are among the subjects of the book), there was always an element of comedy in the hast y ama lg amati on of Fr ench eleg an ce an d bas ic Muscovite rudeness. This history of sixty years of Russian court life contains many amusing tales and scandalous anecdotes as well as a sober and detailed account of the creation - from literally nothi ng but ba rre n wast es - of a c api tal an d cour t whose grandeur by the time of Catherine the Great had become second to none."
