27 McConnell, Gail A. (Inscribed by the author.) Pictorial research by Stan D. Hanson. Chapter V by A. Stirling King. SASKATOON: HUB CITY OF THE WEST. AN ILLUSTRATED HISTORY.
(Windsor Publications, n.p., 1983), Ist edition.
127 pp, 4to, hard cover in dust jacket. INSCRIBED AND DATED BY THE AUTHOR TO THE EDITIOR ON HALF-TITLE PAGE. B&w and color photos, maps, reproductions. "(T)ells the remarkable Saskatoon story with insight and skill, beginning with the captivating saga of the Temperance Colonists and the land they settled. Their vision of Saskatoon as a transportation centre foreshadowed the determination of later citizens to bring the railroads to their city, enabling Saskatoon to proclaim itself the 'Hub City' by the turn of the century. The decades of the new century brought struggle and achievement - the agricultural co-ops of the twenties; the Depression of the 'dirty thirties'; the mineral boom of the sixties; and Saskatoon's emergence, in the eighties, as a research centre for science and technology. A special chapter, 'Partners in Progress', profiles the contributions of Saskatoon's business community, whose support helped make this volume possible." Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, two small closed tears archivally taped - one with crease. VG/VG

Toronto Macmillan of Canada 1959 Hard Cover Very Good - Good+
298 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H). Eight b&w plates plus fold-out map - collated. Includes the author's introduction to her novel, "Mark Hurdlestone". "Mrs. Moodie, a refined and sophisticated person by upbringing and inclination, looks, not back, but about her at the relatively advanced society which had grown up in the clearings along the 'front' of the St. Lawrence and Lake Ontario. Here we are concerned, not with the woodsman's axe and the primitive struggle against nature, not with the solitary but with social man. Mrs. Moodie is quite sure that this society is in a much healthier condition than the one she had known in England: She associates the improvement with the mixing of the classes in the new society and thinks that the absence of convention and prejudice in the relations between various occupational groups is partly due to a 'friendly' American influence. She likes the greater liveliness in social intercourse, and better still she likes the way in which the stripping away of the old preconceptions makes possible a true estimate of a man's worth which she sees simply as the sum of his native ability, his industry, his moral training and his education." First published in 1853 . 31 Newman, F.G. With the Sunniside Historical Society. THE TURNPIKE ROAD - SUNNISIDE, MARLEY HILL, BYERMOOR.
Seaham, Durham The People's History 1998 1902527011 / 9781902527017 First Edition Soft Cover Very Good
128 pp, 9 3/8" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, map. "This new collection of over 200 photographs once again acknowledges the part coal mining played in our lives, but we also dwell on the vital role played by the farmers, market gardeners and food distributors. Throughout the grim years of the Second World War, when our island was virtually under siege, the agricultural industry fed the natiion and their contribution to the war effort was vital. The role of the agricultural industry has not diminished - home grown produce is still a vital commodity. The book pays tribute to the 'ordinary' people of our villages and we have included many of the families and individuals who have contributed to our community in their own special way. It is unfortunate but inevitable that some people will be omitted, but the selection appearing within these pages are representative of the many characters who have lived and worked along and around 'The Turnpike Road'." Contents: Introduction: The Coming of The Turnpike; Sunniside; Marley Hill; Byermoor to The Hobson; Remember the Blessings; On the Front Line; Acknowledgements and Dedication. Vancouver Douglas & McIntyre 1992 1550540106 / 9781550540109 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
145 pp, 12 1/4" H. Beautifully illustrated with colour photographs of peregrine falcons, their habitats, nests, eggs, and young provided by 35 of the world's best-known wildlife photographers and falcon researchers. "(T)he peregrine's recent history holds a cautionary tale: in the 1950s and 1960s, these magnificent birds were nearly wiped out when their food chain was contaminated with pesticides, primarily DDT. (Fortunately) they were saved from extinction with the help of a multimillion dollar recovery program. The peregrine is on the wing again throughout much of its range. But as the author warns, we still have not roused ourselves to face the real enemy. DDT and other persistent pesticides continue to be manufactured and exported to the Third World, and the chemical compounds currently used in Western countries may be almost as deadly. We must change agricultural practices on a global scale, Savage argues; only then will we be heeding the message of hope the falcon has long been empowered to bring." Light wrinkling at top of spine. Dust jacket has very light edge wear/wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.

Richmond Hill, Ontario Richmond Hill Public Library Board 1991 0969537603 / 9780969537601 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
400 pp, oblong (8 3/4" H x 10 3/4" D). Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, reproductions, maps. A local history of Richmond Hill, Ontario. "(D)escribes how the Iroquoian peoples first set up villages in the area - and how the semi-nomadic Mississaugas lost their lands to the British under the 'Gunshot Treaties'. Then came the settlers to claim lots on either side of Lieutenant-Governor John Graves Simcoe's newly built Yonge Street - among them, two eccentric aristrocrats, the German William Berczy and the French Comte de Puisaye; the Munshaws; the Stooks; and Thomas Kinnear, the town's most illustrious murder victim. By 1800, York merchant and tavernkeeper Abner Miles had arrived and set up a tavern at the southeast corner of Yonge and Major Mackenzie - the beginnings of the community we know today. Stamp (describes) the effects of the 1837 Rebellion, the development of church and social life, early local politics, and the growth of business, from the Trench Carriage Works and Crosby's Fire Proof store to the greenhouse operations of entrepreneurs William J. Lawrence, John Dunlop, H.J. Mills, and the Endean brothers. He also gives us a glimpse of the picture post card village of the late nineteenth century, with its winter sleigh rides and its summer picnics and dances at Bond Lake Park. As the portrait draws to a close, Richmond Hill has recovered from the losses of World War I; the glory days of the radial railway have come and gone; and Yonge Street has just been paved to make way for the cars and buses that will bring the town into the twentieth century." Minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine.

Longmans, London, 1979, first edition.
374 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0582483255 "In this book, the first sustained and integrated study of popular disturbances over the long period that links the age of oligarchy with the late Victorian, Dr Stevenson uses his own research and the work of other historians to examine the causes and character of such disturbances, and their relationship with social and economic change. The breadth of treatment, from eighteenth century election riots through the movements o f which the Luddites and the Chartists are only the most familiar to the crises of the later nineteenth century, allows Dr Stevenson to uncover and explore long-term patterns in popular discontent, and to set individual outbreaks in a wider c o n t e x t . He devotes particular attention to price and wage riots, to the London 'mob', to the development of new forms of popular protest, and to the overall distribution and significance of these movements. In his introduction, he discus s es s om e of t he m ethodological problems presented by the subject, and gives a critical appraisal of various approaches to it. He concludes with an examination of the role of popular disturbances in English society and their political signif ic anc e, bot h in ter ms of the 'politics of protest' and the threat of revolution in industrialising Britain."
