22 Crane, Walter. OF THE DECORATIVE ILLUSTRATION OF BOOKS OLD AND NEW.
London Bracken 1984 0946495416 / 9780946495412 Reprint Hard Cover Very Good - Very Good
243 pp, 8vo (8" H). B&w illustrations. "Originally published in 1896, this survey of book illustration is both a comprehensive guide to many facets of early work in the field and important evidence of Victorian taste and the influences which shaped it. Walter Crane, as a leading designer and illustrator, was exceptionally well placed to survey the subject - indeed, some of the finest pieces among over 100 drawings reproduced here are those by Crane himself. Crane begins by describing the artist's role in producing manuscripts and early printed books up to the end of the sixteenth century, giving an account of Italian, French and (particularly) German work. He then moves to the beginning of 'modern illustration', which he dates from the work of Blake, and takes in most of the major Victorian exponents of the art, with examples from such men as Rossetti, Selwyn Image, Arthur Hughes, Laurence Housman, Howard Pyle and Will H. Bradley. The result is a book which has delighted the collector for many years, and is now in increasing demand among art historians and typographers." Faint erased pencil mark on front free endpaper, light browning in margins of pages and to edges of text block, light wrinkling at fore-edge of pages 32 to 44 with two very small tears on fore-edge of pages 37 to 40 that are archivally taped. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.

"....chronicles the story of a majestic four-engined bomber of the propeller era flying perilous co mbat missions against a sleek, nimble aeroplane of the jet age, the Soviet MiG-15. A 'very heavy' bomber and a sky giant during World War 2 (at that time the B29 was the world's most advanced combat aircraft), it had been reclassified as a ' m e d i u m ' bomber by the time North Korea attacked its sourthern neighbour in 1950. Many of its crew members had fought their war and settled down to raise families and begin careers - only to be recalled to fight another war on a distant As i an p en in su la . A n irreverent bunch, they painted their B-29s in elaborate colour schemes. Historians have long been intrigued by the unique war they fought, pitting their big and vulnerable bomber against a veritable fleet of MiG-15s. ENGLISH COURT LIFE, FROM HENRY VII TO GEORGE II., Dutton, Ralph.
29 Dutton, Ralph. ENGLISH COURT LIFE, FROM HENRY VII TO GEORGE II.
London B.T. Batsford 1963 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good+
232 pp, 9" H. B&w illustrations. "The atmosphere of a Court is enclosed and artificial. The monarch has in the past enjoyed a wide degree of power without a corresponding sense of obligation or responsibility; and for the courtiers, whose position depended on their agreeableness, flattery has always been at a premium just as frankness has been inhibited. How do men and women react in circumstances where normal standards of behaviour are inapplicable? This is the question which, by implication, Ralph Dutton answers in this book. Since his survey covers the three centuries from Henry VII to George VII it is natural that, in so many different courts and under the reign of so various a series of kings and queens, Court Life should appear in most of its possible forms. But in the moral forcing house of the Court a constant element, from 1485 to 1760, has been the tendency for personal virtues and defects of character to become exaggerated to an extent seldom met with in the prosaic outside world. As to the Courts themselves: the Coronations, Drawing-rooms, Progresses, Births and Funerals; the favourites, mistresses and politicians, and the palaces in which they met, intrigued and lived: as to all these, they provide Mr. Dutton with a rich topic on which to exercise his accustomed gifts for description, quotation and deprecatory comment." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, very light edge and corner wear, bump at top corner of front board - migrates as a small bump at top corner of pages up to approx. page 40, small store label at bottom of front pastedown. Dust jacket has minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, minor browning at top edge of flaps, small crease at bottom corner of rear flap.

Burlington, Ontario North Shore 2003 189689920X / 9781896899206 First Edition Soft Cover Near Fine Signed by Author
104 pp, oblong 8vo (8" H x 10 1/2" D). Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs. Signed by author on title page. "There is a lot of nostalgia within these pages. The photographs show a different sort of community as it has evolved over the years. There is a series of photographs taken on Colborne Street - better known today as Lakeshore Road - showing retail establishments long gone as well as other shots of historic houses, the harbors in transition, and Rebecca Street of long, long ago. A series of aerial photographs, some dating back more than 40 years, provide a different glimpse of Oakville, offering a unique perspective of the downtown core. Then marvel at the old schools, the Middle Road and the bustling community of Palermo, and even an antique car display at the Ford plant. As you leaf through these pages, an Oakville of another era will come alive, one rich in tradition, one as seen through the eyes of photographers."
