"Practically everyone knows of HMS Cossack's mag nificent exploit in a Norwegian fiord in February 1940 when her crew rescued 299 captive British merchant seamen from the Altmark. Cossack was just one of 27 Tribal Class destroyers which served in the Royal Navy and the Royal Australian an d C a n a d i an Navies from 1938 to 1969. They were considered by many to be the finest of their type. The Tribals probably saw more acion over a longer period of time, and over a greater area of the globe, than any other class of destroyer. Th ey to ok p ar t in almost every Home Fleet and Mediterranean action, the D-Day operations, the East Indies, the South-West Pacific amphibious landings, the Battle for Leyte Gulf, the surrender of Japan and the Korean War. Technical details are p rov i ded , t oge the r wit h lists of commanding officers and pennant numbers, and the ship's crests." Interior - clean with no previous ownership marks. 198 pp, oblong 8vo, (8 3/4" H x 11 1/2" D). Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, maps and colour reproductions - wonderful pictorial end papers of Athabaskan at speed. "The Athabaskan was the second of the Canadian Tribal Class Destroyers, sister ship to the Haida. The story of Athabaskan's life and death has been lovingly retrieved from forgotten archives and her daily log. In her short life she was pounded by the sea and battered by bombs, gunfire, and torpedoes. She spent her finest and final hours fighting alongside her sisters in the 10th Flotilla in 1944, helping to clear the English Channel of enemy ships prior to the invasion. 'Unlucky Lady' is a memorial - to a ship, to the men who served her, and to Canadians who served at sea more than forty years ago." Book is slightly cocked, has small bump at top corner of boards. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling, small tears at top of flap-folds - archivally taped; 4" repaired tear with creases, wrinkles and some delamination at bottom of front panel, 1" tear archivally taped at bottom of front flap-fold, very light rubbing and a few tiny dints on front panel.

HISTORIC ARCHITECTURE OF THE ROYAL NAVY: AN INTRODUCTION., Coad, J.G. (Jonathan)
24 Coad, J.G. (Jonathan) HISTORIC ARCHITECTURE OF THE ROYAL NAVY: AN INTRODUCTION.
London Victor Gollancz, London, 1983. 1983 0575032774 / 9780575032774 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
160 pp, large 8vo (9 7/8" H). Profusely illustrated in b&w with photographs, reproductions, plans, elevations, maps. "From the 1690s to the First World War, British maritime power, though often challenged, ruled supreme. It was a key factor in the nation's commercial growth which fuelled and underpinned industrial and imperial expansion. Central to the creation and maintenance of that supremacy were the royal dockyards, and the naval hospitals. Without these there could have been no Royal Navy, and Britain's modern history would have been very different. (This book) concentrates on the period from 1700 to 1900, with particular emphasis on the dockyards built to service the sailing navy. They are rich in naval and architectural history and were industrial centres in England well before the Industrial Revolution. They go far towards explaining how it was that Britain was able to maintain and sustain one of the greatest navies the world has seen. With numerous illustrations featuring surviving buildings in Chatham, Sheerness, Portsmouth, Devonport, Harwich, Gibraltar, Minorca, Malta, Bermuda and Antigua, (it) is a fascinating and important book." Tiny corner bumps, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, minor browning to edges of text block. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.

28 Cutter, Donald C. (Dionisio Alcala Galiano, Cayetano Valdes, Jose Cardero.) CALIFORNIA IN 1792: A SPANISH NAVAL VISIT.
Norman University of Oklahoma Press 1990 0806127317 / 9780806127316 Soft Cover Fine
176 pp, 8 3/6" H. B&w reproductions, maps. "In the summer of 1792, two Spanish schooners, the 'Sutil' and the 'Mexicana', were ordered to inspect the Pacific Coast from Vancouver Island to Monterey. The schooners were commanded by two youthful naval officers, Dionisio Alcala Galiano and Cayetano Valdes. Assisted by their scribe and artist, Jose Cadero, they recorded their efforts to find the so-called Strait of Anian, a Spanish Northwest Passage. The full account, here translated into English, reveals much new information on the indigenous peoples of California, Spanish-Indian relations, and the successes and failures of the Franciscan missionaries. Also included is a vocabulary and catechism of the Carmel Mission Indians missing in earlier editions. In introductory chapters and notes, Donald C. Cutter supplements the authors' observations with a brief history of California and biographical information on the authors, other naval officers, and the soldiers and friars." 320 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, reproductions, drawings, maps. "This compelling narrative recounts the 28-year career of HMS Agamemnon, a 64-gun ship of the line which became one of the most famous vessels of the Royal Navy, commanded between 1793 and 1796 by Nelson, who always referred to her as his favourite ship. For three of the most critical decades of British naval history, Agamemnon was at the centre of events, fighting at the Battle of the Saintes, Copenhagen and, of course, Trafalgar. Later she served in the West Indies, participating in the Battle of Santo Domingo, and in South American waters until she was wrecked in 1809 in Maldonado Bay, off the coast of present-day Uruguay. This fascinating account of Agamemnon's career highlights all the significant events of the period and portrays the authentic world of the Nelsonic era." Book is Fine. (This book) describes the RCN's long, challenging journey from the outbreak of the war in September 1939 to the momentous events of Spring 1943. Based on extensive research in Canadian, British, American and German archives, (it) describes the mobilization of the naval service during the first half of the war, measures its response to the demanding, ever-changing strategic situations that confronted the Allies, and analyses the service of our ships and sailors on the North Atlantic, Pacific and Mediterranean seas as well as the defence of Canadian waters. With the main focus on the Battle of the Atlantic, this important and well-illustrated history demonstrates how Canadian naval forces proved indispensable to victory in that most critical campaign of the Second World War." 37 Easton, Alan. Foreword by Rear-Admiral K.L. Dyer. 50 NORTH: AN ATLANTIC BATTLEGROUND. (CANADA'S ATLANTIC BATTLEGROUND.)
Toronto Ryerson Press 1963 First Edition. Hard Cover Very Good Fair Inscribed By Author
287 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H). Inscribed on front free endpaper: "Archie Whelan / This describes a very different / environment in which you / & I worked together, but I / hope you'll like reading about it. / Your old friend / Alan Easton. / March 1963." B&w illustrations. "In this exciting book, Lieutenant-Commander Alan Easton of the Royal Canadian Navy Reserve tells of his experiences during the Second World War. The first ship he commanded was a corvette with faulty engines. His second corvette saw convoy action and battled both German U-boats and bad weather. Then Easton was given command of a destroyer which saw action in the English Channel on the day of the Normandy invasion. Easton gives a thrilling and detailed account of this successful naval engagement. But '50 North' is as much concerned with everyday life on board small warships as it is with the Atlantic battle as a whole. For this reason (it) is the first Canadian book of its kind. Easton is able to portray with vividness the seamen under him, their minor quarrels as well as the more important problems which occasionally develop between the crew and the commanding officers." Very light browning to edges of text block, small bump to top of front hinge, minor erinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has old tape repairs for large and small tears with creases, a few small edge chips, light browning, rubbing and soiling - mainly on rear panel, now protected in a mylar sleeve.

"(O)ffers a colourful and thoroughly researched account of Canada's silent service, from its unexpected inauguration in British Columbia on the first day of the Great War to its uncertain future today. After describing the activities of the submarine service during and after World War I, (the author) details the careers of the Canadians who served with distinction in British submarines in all theatres of World War II. She goes on to examine the modern era, from the rebirth of the service in the 1960s to the present, and provides little-known information about the controversial Conservative initiative for nuclear-powered submarines in 1987. Above all, this vivid account celebrates the individuals who dedicated and in some instances gave their lives to Canada's submarine service." One tiny edge bump. Boston Houghton Mifflin 1984 0395353149 / 9780395353141 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
318 pp, large 8vo (9 3/16" H). B&w plates, maps/battle plans. "(A) lively and authoritative account of the United States Navy from Independence throught the War of 1812. During this turbulent period the new American republic fought three wars - declared and undeclared - against the Barbary States, France, and Great Britain. The first two were entirely naval affairs; the third, a combination of military action on land and sea. In each the survival of the young nation was due in large part to the efforts of the navy and the exploits of such men as Stephen Decatur, Isaac Hull, Thomas Truxtun, and Oliver Hazard Perry. William Fowler is a historian with the capacity to convert meticulous research into flowing narrative. Here he fuses political and naval history, looking at political forces in the rapidly expanding U.S. society as well as at naval ordnance, operations, and the fateful and exciting battles at sea. He deals too with the often neglected human aspects of life aboard ship, focusing on those who served in the forecastle as well as the great men on the quarterdeck." Minor soiling on top of text block at spine. Dust jacket has been price-clipped, has very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, several small tears - taped at top inside of spine.

HMCS HAIDA: BATTLE ENSIGN FLYING., Gough, Barry M.
40 Gough, Barry M. HMCS HAIDA: BATTLE ENSIGN FLYING.
St Catharines, Ontario Vanwell 2001 1551250586 / 9781551250588 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Near Fine Grant Macdonald.
255 pp, 4to (11 1/4" H). B&w photographs, reproductions of artwork by Grant Macdonald and others, maps/battle plans, colour plates. " 'HMCS Haida's story is an account of sharp-end war; of Canada's naval experience in Murmansk convoys and British Home Fleet protection; in English Channel operations, when Canadian and British naval units swept the German naval ensign from the seas; in the destruction of a U-boat, and in the liberation of Trondheim, Norway. Haida was always in on the action. She sank more enemy military tonnage than any other Canadian vessel. Haida's finest days were during the intense naval operations leading up to D-Day, when, with her sisters Huron and Iroquois and the ill-fated Athabaskan, with British and Polish men of war, she engaged German destroyers, torpedo boats, minesweepers and others - and never lost. She vigorously carried the war to the enemy at great risk. Her postwar career including two tours in the Korean theatre displays the same brave purpose in her officers and men, trained professionals and dedicated sailors. Barry Gough has written a new chapter in Canadian naval annals, showing that the best equipment brings forth the best results when good fortune and superb seamanship and weapons handling are matched in equal measure - Haida's illustrious story." Very minor edge wear at bottom of flap-folds, minor rubbing.
