THE WOMAN IN FASHION., Moore, Doris Langley.
22 Moore, Doris Langley. THE WOMAN IN FASHION.
London B. T. Batsford 1949 First Edition Hard Cover Good- Fair Felix Fonteyn, photographer.
184 pp, 10" H. B&w photographs, colour fronispiece shows Vanessa Redgrave in pink tafetta dress. "(The author) possesses what is probably the finest private collection of English clothing of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and she is also well known as an authority on the history and psychology of dress. (This book) makes use both of her collection and her expert knowledge, and in a particularly delightful way. The dresses have been photographed by Felix Fonteyn, as they were at the time when they were first made: that is, they are shown on living models and in appropriate settings. Set off by such interesting and distinguished women as Vivien Leigh, Ruth Draper, Margot Fonteyn, Moira Shearer, Beatrice Lillie, Googie Withers, Mai Zetterling, and many others well known on the stage, the films, and in similar spheres, the costumes (of c.1800 to 1926) 'come alive' in a way previously unknown either through old fashion plates or in the ordinary histories of costume. (Moore's) text is no less vivid and revealing than her illustrations. She enjoys the great advantage of writing as a woman, with a more than theoretical experience of feminine dress; and she shows herself to be an author of quite exceptional insight, sympathy, and expertise." Light browning to endpapers - small stain on rear pastedown, soft bump to top corner of pages, small bump at top corner of boards, light wrinkling at bottom of spine, scattered small areas of color fading on front board and on edges of boards, very small liquid stain on front board. Dust jacket is price-clipped, has very small stain on inside of each panel, moderate edge wear/wrinkling with some small tears and tiny chips, light fading and moderate wear/wrinkling on spine, light soiling and light liquid mark on rear panel, protected in a mylar sleeve.

YUGOSLAVIA/CROATIAN FOLK EMBROIDERY DESIGNS AND TECHNIQUES., Ribaric, Jelka Radaus, Dr., Foreword. Description of Techniques by Blazena Szenczi. Translated by Janko Paravic.
27 Ribaric, Jelka Radaus, Dr., Foreword. Description of Techniques by Blazena Szenczi. Translated by Janko Paravic. YUGOSLAVIA/CROATIAN FOLK EMBROIDERY DESIGNS AND TECHNIQUES.
New York Van Nostrand Reinhold 1976 0442269056 / 9780442269050 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good Mitja Koman, photographs.
22 pp + plate section containing 197 colour and b&w examples, square (9 3/8" H x 9 3/8" D). B&w photographs of stitches and b&w stitch diagrams. "This book describes the folk art embroidery as it flourished in the Yugoslavian republic of Croatia until the early twentieth century. Ordinary, otherwise unskilled women transmitted their extraordinary skills from generation to generation, using traditional materials, stitches, and motifs to ornament their clothing and national costumes. Their work integrated influences from historic periods and styles, but the rich heterogeneity of motifs, the vitality of the color schemes, and the perfection of techniques remained their own. The designs and techniques shown are being used today in Yugoslavia, even though the drive to use them in their pure form is no longer there. In spite of the sophisticated, pefectly realized appearance of the work, many of the patterns are simple and made with a number of relatively easily mastered techniques which are fully described in this book." Contents: Foreword; Information on the Stitches; Materials; Description of Techniques; Stitches on Counted Threads; Outline Stitches, Edgings, Borders, Fillings; Appliques; Captions; Diagrams; Plates. Very slight bow to book, very small light soiling mark at top corner of front board. Dust jacket has been price-clipped, has very light wear/wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, very small tear (archivally taped) at bottom of front flap-fold, very light browning at top edge.

96 pp, 10 3/16" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs. "Various events contrived to bring about the cafe racer era, together with the advent of the rocker - and subsequently mod - cults. New motorcycles such a s the BSA Gold Star singles and Star twins, Norton Dominator, Royal Enfield Meteor and Constellation, Triumph Tiger 110 and Thunderbird and Velocette Venom created a new breed of enthusiast, while films such as Marlon Brando's 'The Wild One' expressed, albeit in somewhat extreme form, the biker-as-rebel philosophy. Add to this the potency of that biggest of all pop music phenomena, rock'n'roll, an increasing affluence and the mushrooming 'youth culture', and the ingredients were all in place. Famed motorcycle author Mick Walker provides a fascinating re-creation of the era, packed with period photos of the machines and their riders, with information on technical and design features, clothing and accessories, and the cafe racer lifestyle which aroused fervent enthusiasm and stern disapproval in equal measure. To read this book is to enter a period which has become part of motorcycle folklore." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks.
