New York G. Howard Watt 1928 Very Good- No Jacket
464 pp, 8 11/16" H. Colour plates (including frontispiece), b&w photographs, drawings, measured drawings (patterns). "In this book I have tried to show by practical examples the history of the development of dress. This attempt is based on the conviction that nothing but the original costume, if that be accessible, can be considered definitive for the conception we may legitimately entertain regarding the ideas about dress that prevailed in any period." A HUNDRED YEARS OF ROYAL STYLE., McDowell, Colin.
23 McDowell, Colin. A HUNDRED YEARS OF ROYAL STYLE.
London Muller, Blond & White 1985 0584110715 / 9780584110715 First Edition Very Good - Good Colin McDowell.
192 pp, small 4to (10 1/8" H). Profusely illustrated in colour and b&w with photographs, drawings, reproductions. "(T)akes us behind the royal image - behind the panoply of royal fashion. With rare knowledge and informed wit Colin McDowell explains how the requirements of protocol and public relations combine to define the boundaries of royal style - not only in terms of clothes but also performance on state occasions and overseas travel and, indeed, at all the crucial moments of the Royal Year. His own outstanding drawings, as well as a marvellous selection of photographs, illustrate and enlarge on the story. Colin McDowell's meticulous research, and his privileged access to designers, suppliers and other sources closely involved in the creation and maintenance of royal style bring a very special authority to this fascinating and detailed survey. (It) concentrates on the style of four Queens, each of whom has or had a distinct and individual style that epitomized the monarchy of her day. Two other ladies of remarkable style are added to complete the picture: one, Wallis Simpson, who became Duchess of Windsor, and who might have been Queen but who, it can be argued, was unsuitable exactly because of her style; and another, who all trust in due course will be Queen: Princess Diana, whose own style so happily does so much to glamorize and popularize the monarchy of today." Light fading to cloth - 1 1/4" strip down hinge side of front board, light waviness to edges of text block; place, date and initials in ink on half-title page. Dust jacket has light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, heavy fading to spine color - lettering is still visible, crease down centre of spine, light rubbing with a few light line indentations.

IN MY SHOES: A MEMOIR., Mellon, Tamara. With William Patrick.
24 Mellon, Tamara. With William Patrick. IN MY SHOES: A MEMOIR.
New York Portfolio / Penguin 2013 1591846161 / 9781591846161 First Edition Very Good Very Good
275 pp, 9 1/4" H. Colour photographs. "(Tamara) Mellon's business savvy, creative eye, and flair for design built Jimmy Choo into a premier name in the competitive fashion industry. Over time, Mellon grew Jimmy Choo into a billion-dollar brand. She became the British prime minister's trade envoy and was honored by the Queen with the Order of the British Empire - yet it's her personal glamour that keeps her an object of global media fascination. 'Vogue' photographed her weddig. 'Vanity Fair' covered her divorce and the criminal trial that followed. 'Harper's Bazaar' toured her London town house and her New York mansion, right down to the closets. In creating the shoes that became a fixture on 'Sex and the City' and red carpets around the world, Mellon relied on her own impeccable sense of what the customer wanted - because she 'was' that customer. What she didn't know at the time was that success would come at a high price - after struggles with an obstinate business partner, a conniving first CEO, a turbulent marriage, and a mother who tried to steal her hard-earned cash. Now Mellon shares the whole larger-than-life story, with shocking details that have never been presented before." Minor lean to spine, remainder mark on bottom of text block, very light waviness to edges of text block. Dust jacket has very light rubbing, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.

THE WOMAN IN FASHION., Moore, Doris Langley.
26 Moore, Doris Langley. THE WOMAN IN FASHION.
London B. T. Batsford 1949 First Edition Good- Fair Felix Fonteyn, photographer.
184 pp, 10" H. B&w photographs, colour fronispiece shows Vanessa Redgrave in pink tafetta dress. "(The author) possesses what is probably the finest private collection of English clothing of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and she is also well known as an authority on the history and psychology of dress. (This book) makes use both of her collection and her expert knowledge, and in a particularly delightful way. The dresses have been photographed by Felix Fonteyn, as they were at the time when they were first made: that is, they are shown on living models and in appropriate settings. Set off by such interesting and distinguished women as Vivien Leigh, Ruth Draper, Margot Fonteyn, Moira Shearer, Beatrice Lillie, Googie Withers, Mai Zetterling, and many others well known on the stage, the films, and in similar spheres, the costumes (of c.1800 to 1926) 'come alive' in a way previously unknown either through old fashion plates or in the ordinary histories of costume. (Moore's) text is no less vivid and revealing than her illustrations. She enjoys the great advantage of writing as a woman, with a more than theoretical experience of feminine dress; and she shows herself to be an author of quite exceptional insight, sympathy, and expertise." Light browning to endpapers - small stain on rear pastedown, soft bump to top corner of pages, small bump at top corner of boards, light wrinkling at bottom of spine, scattered small areas of color fading on front board and on edges of boards, very small liquid stain on front board. Dust jacket is price-clipped, has very small stain on inside of each panel, moderate edge wear/wrinkling with some small tears and tiny chips, light fading and moderate wear/wrinkling on spine, light soiling and light liquid mark on rear panel, protected in a mylar sleeve.

DAILY LIFE IN HOLLAND IN THE YEAR 1566 AND THE STORY OF MY ANCESTOR'S TREASURE CHEST., Poortvliet, Rien. Translated from the Dutch by Karin H. Ford.
29 Poortvliet, Rien. Translated from the Dutch by Karin H. Ford. DAILY LIFE IN HOLLAND IN THE YEAR 1566 AND THE STORY OF MY ANCESTOR'S TREASURE CHEST.
New York Harry N. Abrams 1992 0810933098 / 9780810933095 First American Edition Very Good+ Very Good Rien Poortvliet. With calligraphy by Diane Lynch.
208 pp, oblong (10 1/4" H x 12 1/8" D). Beautifully illustrated in colour throughout. "Characteristically evocative, the words and images in 'Daily Life in Holland' are rich in detail and delicate in coloration, and perhaps the most beautiful of any of Poortvliet's works to date. In this fascinating saga, he recreates the lives of his forebears as they toiled and celebrated their way through daily existence. He does not conjure up a romantic vision of the past - the Dutch countryside was not all tulips and windmills! There were adversity and hard work, and we learn that 1566 was an extraordinary year in Holland, marked by famine and plague, great freezes, floods and droughts, comets and earthquakes, and an invasion by the Spanish as well. Poortvliet's colorful account unfolds before us to reveal how ordinary men, women, and children lived: what kinds of clothes they wore, what their houses were like, what they ate and how they cooked. How did they celebrate Christmas? What did the people do for a livng and what kind of money did they have? What did a girl's engagement ring look like? How many different kinds of swords and firearms did they have? Exploring his own roots, Poortvliet captures the beauty of everyday life and livelihood in turbulent sixteenth-century Holland." Tiny stain on top of text block, a few tiny dints on bottom edges of boards, previous owner's signed bookplate on half-title page. Dust jacket has very light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, a few tiny dints on front panel, very light rubbing, very small bump on edge of spine.

New York Van Nostrand Reinhold 1976 0442269056 / 9780442269050 Very Good Very Good Mitja Koman, photographs.
22 pp + plate section containing 197 colour and b&w examples, square (9 3/8" H x 9 3/8" D). B&w photographs of stitches and b&w stitch diagrams. "This book describes the folk art embroidery as it flourished in the Yugoslavian republic of Croatia until the early twentieth century. Ordinary, otherwise unskilled women transmitted their extraordinary skills from generation to generation, using traditional materials, stitches, and motifs to ornament their clothing and national costumes. Their work integrated influences from historic periods and styles, but the rich heterogeneity of motifs, the vitality of the color schemes, and the perfection of techniques remained their own. The designs and techniques shown are being used today in Yugoslavia, even though the drive to use them in their pure form is no longer there. In spite of the sophisticated, pefectly realized appearance of the work, many of the patterns are simple and made with a number of relatively easily mastered techniques which are fully described in this book." Contents: Foreword; Information on the Stitches; Materials; Description of Techniques; Stitches on Counted Threads; Outline Stitches, Edgings, Borders, Fillings; Appliques; Captions; Diagrams; Plates. Very slight bow to book, very small light soiling mark at top corner of front board. Dust jacket has been price-clipped, has very light wear/wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, very small tear (archivally taped) at bottom of front flap-fold, very light browning at top edge.

34 Walker, Mick. CAFE RACERS OF THE 1960s: MACHINES, RIDERS AND LIFESTYLE - A PICTORIAL REVIEW. MICK WALKER ON MOTORCYCLES 1.
London Windrow & Greene 1994 1872004199 / 9781872004198 Fine
96 pp, 10 3/16" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs. "Various events contrived to bring about the cafe racer era, together with the advent of the rocker - and subsequently mod - cults. New motorcycles such a s the BSA Gold Star singles and Star twins, Norton Dominator, Royal Enfield Meteor and Constellation, Triumph Tiger 110 and Thunderbird and Velocette Venom created a new breed of enthusiast, while films such as Marlon Brando's 'The Wild One' expressed, albeit in somewhat extreme form, the biker-as-rebel philosophy. Add to this the potency of that biggest of all pop music phenomena, rock'n'roll, an increasing affluence and the mushrooming 'youth culture', and the ingredients were all in place. Famed motorcycle author Mick Walker provides a fascinating re-creation of the era, packed with period photos of the machines and their riders, with information on technical and design features, clothing and accessories, and the cafe racer lifestyle which aroused fervent enthusiasm and stern disapproval in equal measure. To read this book is to enter a period which has become part of motorcycle folklore." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - clean and bright.
