Wisden explains how the mighty confusion of Indian TV bankrolls the game. One great Australian, Richie Benaud, pays homage to another, Ke ith M ill er. W isd en re por ts on South Africans' lingering love affair with Hansie Cronje and, from Sri Lanka, how cricket rose to the challenge of the Indian Ocean tsumami. Wisden recalls its own greatest editor, Sydney Pardon, the man who said (i n 19 10) that the En glan d se lectors had 'touched the confines of lunacy'. Wisden has never minced words. See this year's Notes by the Editor. Oh, and there's The Burning Bunny, the brothel that caters soley for professional crickete rs, a n in tervi ew w ith c ricke t's most famou s Slovak goalkeeper, the ground where it hasn't rained for 15 years....and Wisden's first-ever pin-up." SIX MONTHS TO OBLIVION: THE DEFEAT OF THE LUFTWAFFE FIGHTER FORCE OVER THE WESTERN FRONT, 1944-1945., Girbig, Werner.
30 Girbig, Werner. SIX MONTHS TO OBLIVION: THE DEFEAT OF THE LUFTWAFFE FIGHTER FORCE OVER THE WESTERN FRONT, 1944-1945.
West Chester, PA Schiffer 1991 0887403484 / 9780887403484 Fine Near Fine Dust jacket art by Steven Ferguson.
228 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w photographs, maps. "Covers the last chapter, the decline and fall of the air defense of Germany at the end of World War II. It is a diary of losses and a chronicle in which the fighter pilots plays the lead. It tells of the young men who joined their squadrons full of optimisim and derring-do, only to give their lives to no purpose in a last desperate endeavour. The focal point of (this book) is the controversial Operation 'Bodenplatte' on the morning of New Year's Day 1945, an operation in which the German fighter force received its final mortal wound - losing some 230 aircrew in less than four hours, the fighter units suffered their most severe defeat. Only now, after years of evaluation of all available sources, can the true figures of fighter losses on January 1, 1945 be reported. But this picture of the sacrifice of fighter formations does not mean that fighter pilots were unable to score successes. The figures for enemy aircraft shot down and the contact reports show clearly that the German pilots could still both parry and deal out hard punches. Few people have any real idea of the actual scale of the German fighter force's sacrifice. The imagination boggles at the tragic events that took place in the skies over Europe as the war neared its end, and even in the perspective of history the full extent of the debacle can scarcely be depicted. (Here, the author) explains these last six months of the Luftwaffe and the fall of a once mighty air force." Dust jacket has very light wrinkle at top of spine and front flap-fold.

312 pp, + CD ROM in pouch at rear, 10" H. B&w and colour photographs, b&w maps, drawings/diagrams. "The landing site selected for the crew of Apollo 16 was in the lunar highland area of Descartes. NASA chose to send John Young to command the fifth lunar landing mission. Young had as much or more flight experience than any other member of the astronaut corps. He had circumnavigated the moon on Apollo 10 and he had flown two Gemini missions. Young would later go on to be the first commander of the Space Shuttle. The Descartes landing site was chosen because it appeared to be of volcanic origin. If it was, it might reveal secrets about the origins of the Earth. For three days, Young and Duke embarked on their rover, away from the Lunar Module 'Orion', through rugged landscapes, in search of the origins of our world. Meanwhile Ken Mattingly shot hundreds of photographs and probed the moon's magnetic field from the Command Module 'Casper'. Back on earth the political climate was beginning to turn against NASA and the remarkable risks and exploits undertaken by the crew of Apollo 16 went almost unnoticed by the American people. The three intrepid explorers and their spacecraft harvested a wealth of new data about the Earth-Moon system in an almost flawless performance of skill and bravado. Compiled here are many important documents about the mission including the complete debriefing in the crew's own words." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. London Caxton 2002 1840671645 / 9781840671643 Reprint Very Good Very Good+
430 pp, 9 1/2" H. "(A) chronicle of shipping disasters during the last great war of the age of sail, based almost exclusively on the reporting of the time. Listed are some fifteen hundred ships, vessels naval and mercantile, of many nations whose tribulations were covered in the national and local newspapers as well as the specialist press like the 'Naval Chronicle'. These reports run the whole gamut of maritime tragedies - the bizarre, curious and quirky, as well as the familiar - and in all their inconsequential detail. Through the medium of the reporting of the time, what is here presented is a truly contemporary perspective of events, in itself a fascinating revelation of the mores and attitutudes of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Given the sheer number of craft lost at sea, it cannot be entirely exhaustive, but no other book contains so much non-technical information on the maritime disasters of the period 1793-1815." Creases at bottom edge of spine. Dust jacket has very minor edge wear.

Harmondsworth Viking 1984 0670800007 / 9780670800001 Very Good+ Very Good
337 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). B&w maps, photographs. "In March 1954 an army of 30,000 men sailed from Portsmouth to the Crimea to defend the crumbling Turkish empire against invasion by Russia. Led by Lord Raglan, a veteran of Waterloo but, after forty years, out of touch with the realities of warfare, they embarked for an unknown country to defend a cause few understood or even cared about. Nevertheless enthusiasm and confidence were high among the men of what 'The Times' described as 'the finest army that has ever left these shores'. The euphoria was short-lived and the campaign quickly degenerated into a series of humiliating military disasters caused largely by incompetence at the highest level, bitter personal rivalries among the divisional commanders, and criminal inadequacies of transport, clothing and medical supplies. A scapegoat had to be found if the British Government was to survive, and it was Lord Raglan who bore the brunt of the virulent anti-war campaign mounted by the newspapers. Misunderstood and maligned by his contemporaries, his reputation blackened for posterity, Lord Raglan died a broken man only weeks before the French finally defeated the Russians at Malakoff, with little help from their demoralized British allies. In this fair, scholarly and vividly written account of the confused tragedy of the Crimea, Christopher Hibbert has done much to redeem the reputation of a sensitive and courageous man who simply lacked the necessary qualities of leadership and intellect to extricate his army with honour from an ill-conceived and bloody campaign. Drawing on contemporary letters, papers, reports and diaries, the author strongly suggests that the chaos of the Crimea was the result, not of one man's neglect, but of a whole nation's folly." 2" split at top of gutter between index pages 336/337, one tiny corner bump. Dust jacket has very light edge wrinkling, light rubbing - mainly on rear panel, two wrinkles in laminate down front cover.

ISBN 0804810095 Color plates, b&w engravings, maps (some fold-out) - collated. "As late as 1857, the vast territory of the Canadian northwest was unknown to all but a handful of fur traders. Yet the determination of the Hudson's Bay Company to maintain its enormous fur preserve was being challenged by the persistant advance of settlement. Anticipatin g t h e t e r m ination of the Company's license in 1859 and curious about the suitability of the territory for general settlement, both the Imperial and the Canadian governments commissioned expeditions in 1857 to explore and report on the area. A n I ri sh - bo rn a rm y officer, Captain John Palliser, headed the British expedition; the moving spirit of the Canadian party was Henry Youle Hind. Hind's energy and zeal for the project lead his expedition on a thorough exploration of the R ed Ri ver an d l at er, of th e A ssiniboine and Saskatchewan Rivers as well. First hand observation of the success of even limited farming in these areas convinced Hind that the prairies were capable of absorbing many thousands of settlers and of pro vidi ng t hem wit h a good liv ing. He wrote enthusiastically of the potentialities of western agriculture, envisaging a transportation system, either wagon road or railroad, from Lake of the Woods to the Rockies that would enjoy the advan tag e of bein g fed by an a gric ultur al po pulat ion from one extremity to the other. Substantail parts of this work made their first appearance as parliamentary papers in 1857. Hind's optimistic reports outweighed the less enthusiastic findin gs o f Pal liser and ul tima tely influ enced the Im perial government to refuse the renewal of the Hudson's Bay Company's license two years later. Hind's 'Narrative', factual and objective, yet enlivened by incidents of personal experience, is fo remos t a do cument of ext raord inary visio n and foresig ht and remains today a minor classic."
