181 Byng, John, Viscount Torrington. Edited by Donald Adamson. RIDES ROUND BRITAIN.
London Folio Society 1996 Hard Cover Very Good Anne Hayward.
505 pp, 8vo (8" H). Bound in quarter orange-brown buckram, Ann Muir marbled paper boards; dark brown endpapers. Plain dark brown slipcase. Frontispiece and 25 half-page and smaller b&w engravings by Anne Hayward, 9 maps by Denys Baker. A countryman at heart, Byng travelled throughout Britain on horseback whenever his position at the Stamp Office would allow him to escape from London. As a chronicler of the eighteenth-century, "Byng travels with an observant though never a roving eye. At times it is the eye of the modern photo-journalist, as when he records a meeting with Humphrey Repton, visits Sarah Siddons in her dressing-room at Birmingham, or glimpses Warren Hastings changing horses on his way to Daylesford. At other times his eye is more like that of the self-taught but well-trained artist, as when he admires the flickering tapers of Yordas Cave or the Kentish hop-pickers working in all haste among the twinkling lights of the hopfields. At Cromford in Derbyshire the bustle and brilliance of Arkwright's great cotton 'manufactory' even blind him to what he basically regards as the horrors of creeping industrialism: 'The cotton mills,' he observes, 'seven storeys high and fill'd with inhabitants, remind me of a first-rate man of war and, when they are lighted up on a dark night, look most luminously beautiful.' As is now widely acknowledged, (Byng) is one of the greatest British travellers of the eighteenth or indeed of any century. Not only has he produced an excellent travel guide (as, in a way, he intended to do); his work is also a major contribution to the social history of England and Wales - and especially Welsh social history. (This book) is, finally, a masterpiece of social observation, written with as fine an eye for detail as Jane Austen's and (like Pepys diary) superb in its delineation of its author's own character." Some light rubbing to paper on boards. Slipcase has minor rubbing and one very small edge bump.

London Leslie Frewin 1968 Facsimile Edition. Hard Cover Very Good - Good-
48 pp + 24 colour plates (reproductions of illustrations from the 1875 edition, printed on one side of leaf only), 9 1/2" H. "By the 1870s, Patience was already a popular pastime, and it is surprising to learn that Lady Adelaide's compilation was the first on the subject to appear in the English language. (It) became, and remained, a best seller. It has been reprinted many times, but without the elegant and colourful plates that made it 'the' coffe-table book of London society during the latter half of Queen Victoria's reign and throughout that of Edward VII. The book delighted me so much that I decided to republish it, if it could be exactly reproduced. The generosity of Mrs Meredith and the skill of the printers have now made that possible." from the Preface. Contents: Preface; Foreword; Explanation of the Tableaux; Explanation of Term; (Games) Belle Lucie; Le Cadran; La Quinzaine; La Loi Salique; Les Quatre Coins; Le Moulin; Le Shah; Le Blocus; L'Horloge; La Forteresse; Les Quatorze; Le Sultan; Le Calcul; La Nivernaise; The Empress of India; The Besieged City; Le Parterre; Les Hemispheres; Les Petits Paquets; Le Carre Napoleon; La Duchesse de Luynes; The British Constitution; The Zodiac; Sympathie. From 1685 to the sad day in 1959 when the Royal Norfolks were amalgamated with the Suffolk Regiment to found the 1st East Anglian Regiment (Royal Norfolk and Suffolk), theirs has been a record of uninterrupted service in nearly every cam p a i g n f ought by the British Army since its early days. Indeed in the Second World War they won five V.C.s, more than any other Regiment. It is a magnificent story and this book justly presents the deeds of this great regiment in a form which w il l ap pe a l not only to those who served in the Royal Norfolks, but to anyone interested in military history." In Cairo as a teacher, he used his long ho l i d a y s t o travel all over the Middle East and Asia Minor. The First World War found him first at Gallipoli, brilliantly describing the doomed campaign, and then later in the Sinai desert. Caskie, Minister of the Scottish Kirk in Paris, preached for the last time in four years, said goodbye to his congregation, locked the chur ch and joined the mass-exodus from the city. A Highlander, he denounced Hitler from his pulpit. He was on the Gestapo 'Black List'. After a perilous journey - he was mobbed by French villagers who thought him a German paratrooper and machi n e - g u n n ed from the air - he arrived in Marseilles and commandeered the British Seamen's Mission near the Old Harbour. There the adventures of 'The Tartan Pimpernel' began. Immediately contacted by Allied Intelligence Officers he was conscri pt ed t o se rv ic e. The Seamen's Mission became a vital link on the escape route for prisoners-of-war and soldiers escaping from Dunkirk. He fed, clothed and gave the men shelter before sending them through the Pyrenees with forged papers to Sp ain . He co lle cte d m ilitary information for the Allies. Denounced by a British traitor, Dr. Caskie was banished to Grenoble where he continued his work as an 'underground padre'. Arrested by the Gestapo and sentenced to death in a Nazi Court h e pa ss ed thr ough sev en p risons and was saved from death by a German padre. Throughout all his perils (he) was sustained by the Christian Faith and inspired by native patriotism. Still the Scottish Minister to Paris, he has saved the books in whic h h e r ecor ded t he na mes o f his guests of war. Pencorp, (London), [1991].
200 pp, large 8vo (9 3/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w and color illustrations. "The story of Slough Estates is the unlikely tale of a group of businessmen who bought up the entire surplus stock of British army vehicles used in World War One and ended up as a powerful force in the nation's property development industry...(It) is also the story of a company that made a town. With a community of just 15,000 in 1918, the town of Slough today boasts a prosperous population of almost 100,000 with a density inextricably linked to a host which takes an extraordinary interest in its community welfare...The company could not have grown without the patronage of a good number of businesses down the years, many of which started their own corporate stories on the estate. Some, like No-Pe-Lo Potatoes and the O'Cedar Mop Co., have long since vanished but other have survived the roll call of business life, among them Mars, Flexello, Berlei, Aspro, Horlicks and Black and Decker. This is their story, too." Small light bump to top corners, small bump with closed tear/wrinkles/scuff at bottom edge of front board. Leo Cooper, Barnsley, 2001, first edition.
252 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0850528240 B&w plates, maps. "One hundred years ago, the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers, along with many other British regiments, were fighting a desperate campaign many thousands of mi les from their native land. The Second Boer War tested the resolve and resources of what was then the mightiest Empire in the world. A succession of reverses raised the real spectre of defeat at the hands of the Boers; an unthinkable humi l i a t i o n . The depth of public interest and concern felt at the time is reflected in continual fascination in this conflict. Thus Martin Cassidy's careful editing of the graphic diaries of three members of the Regiment's 1st Battalion (two o ff ic er s an d on e p rivate soldier) is to be greatly welcomed. Through the differing angles of these fine accounts we witness not just the drama of battle but the harsh conditions that the British troops had to endure. To read first-hand record s o f t he ex tra or din ar y deeds such as those performed at Inniskilling Hill and the Relief of Ladysmith is a privilege that will mean much to those closely associated with the Regiment and to all with an interest in military history." 197 pp, large 8vo (9 3/16" H). "They came from unpromising places and unglamorous backgrounds. They crashed the Establishment party in one generation, raided the citadels of culture, and brought their idioms, themes, and passions to the center of British life. The blokes were writers who revitalized British drama, fiction, poetry, and criticism. This is the story, told in a series of profiles, of New Britannia. The cast of characters includes playwrights John Osborne and Arnold Wesker, novelist Kingsley Amis, critic Kenneth Tynan, poet Philip Larkin, fiction writer Alan Sillitoe, plus lesser-known figures such as John Braine, David Storey, Stan Barstow, and Keith Waterhouse - up to more contemporary writers like Martin Amis and Nick Hornby. The central idea of this book is how these writers, and others, transformed British heritage - how they worked with the materials of their own backgrounds, the class system, tradition, and artistic convention to make new art. They took their place in a long line of writers who thrived on grit: Daniel Defoe, Charles Dickens, Bernard Shaw, D.H. Lawrence. (It) is an entertaining and insightful survey of a group of disparate writers who had a profound and enduring impact upon British literary culture." " exciting action story of that dramatic period in North American history when the British and French vied with each other and with the native Indians for control of this rich land; a struggle that culminated in the American Revolutionary War which raged up and down the beautiful Mohawk valley for several years and culminated in the defeat of the British by the re bels and the departure of the decimated Indians westward. It is the story of Joseph Brant, Mohawk chief, who led the People of the Longhouse, the Six Nations' Indians, through fateful years of triumph and disaster, when excitement ran high a n d d a n g er lurked round every bend of trail or river. Realizing that to survive, the Indians must have gunpowder, Joseph bargained with the white men, and when the Indians decided to fight with the British, gunpowder was the deciding factor . Ho w b ri ll ia nt was Joseph's leadership, and how nearly the Indians came to winning the war for the British, is now told for the first time in this dramatic and colourful novel. The battle strategy which Brant devised would, if followed by t he Bri ti sh , h ave wo n t he war for them. 170 years later it has formed the basis of British commando tactics. It is also the story of Joseph's love for Catherine Crogan, the beautiful half-breed Indian whose brilliant spying for the British won this tr ibu te f rom Colo nel Butler: 'How else could two hundred Rangers and a handful of Indians have lived off the enemy and kept a frontier in flames for four years?'."
