WALTER CRANE AS A BOOK ILLUSTRATOR., Engen, Rodney K.
182 Engen, Rodney K. WALTER CRANE AS A BOOK ILLUSTRATOR.
New York St. Martin's Press 1975 85670170X First American Edition Very Good Walter Crane.
105 pp, 11 1/2" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w and colour reproductions. "Walter Crane, artist of Kensington, was a man of many talents, but possibly best known for his original and charmingly executed designs which made him the leading illustrator of children's books of the Aesthetic Movement period. In the face of the commercial vulgarity and ugliness of Victorian industrialised society, he created a delicate and escapist fairy world which, with its emphasis on spontaneity and mobility of line, and its clever use of background and colour, popularised a completely new style of tasteful book designs, and brought them within the reach of everyone. The influence of Crane's work and his highly novel theories of design make him an important figure in nineteenth century art history. (The author) discusses Crane's style and ideas in a study delightfully arranged after Crane's own rules and book design. He includes nearly 100 illustrations, ranging from nursery rhymes and fairytales to tailpieces and borders, mostly full page as Crane designed them, and 16 in the full colour he helped to pioneer. The extensive annotated catalogue is an invaluable aid for both student and specialist." Previous owner's bookplate on half title page. Interior - previous owner's bookplate on half-title page, otherwise clean and tight with no other ownership marks. Exterior - minor corner wear, small area of delamination at bottom front corner.

184 Erickson, Carolly. ROYAL PANOPLY: BRIEF LIVES OF THE ENGLISH MONARCHS.
New York St. Martin's Press, New York, 2006. 2006 0312316437 / 9780312316433 Fine Near Fine
351 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). Colour and b&w plates. "(This book) replaces the stereotypic images with true multifaceted portraits, bringing each of England's rulers to fully fleshed life. Here is the puny Charles I, nervous, tense, and socially awkward; the frail, slight Richard II, melancholic and sad; the homosexual James I with his handsome favorites; the stuttering William II and the stammering George VI. Here also is the choleric, violent William I (William the Conqueror), bred among the chaos of constant warfare in his native Normandy, ceaselessly embattled once he became King of England. The unkingly Henry III, mild and charitable, despised by his barons for his weakness. And the well-meaning, deeply affectionate Queen Anne, whose many children all died before they could reach adulthood and who was so heavy and gout-ridden that she had to be carried to her coronation. Each ruler's life has a unique story, and 'Royal Panoply' tells that story with award-winning historian Carolly Erickson's characteristic blend of scholarly authenticity, engaging prose, and psychological insight. The focus is not merely on the tale of each reign, but on each king's or queen's entire life, for some rulers did not come to the throne until middle age, and had already led full lives before their accession. Here they are in full panoply: feudal warriors, Renaissance icons, Regency dandies, and modern constitutional monarchs, fascinating characters all." Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling.

326 pp, large 8vo (9 1/5" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0312352182 "Courageous, attractive, romantic, intelligent, Catherine Parr became the sixth wife of Henry VIII. Her story, as Carolly Erickson re-creates it, is page-turning drama: from the splendors of the Field of the Cloth of Gold to the gory last years of the outsize King Henry, when heads rolled and England trembled, Catherine bestrode her destiny and survived to marry her true love. Catherine Parr attracted the kin g ' s l u s t and, though much in love with the handsome Thomas Seymour, was thrown into the intrigue-filled snake pit of the royal court. While victims of the king's wrath suffered torture and execution, Catherine persevered until, at last, she ca me w i th in t he orbit of the royal fury. King Henry toyed with her, first ordering her arrested, then granting her clemency. She managed to avoid execution, but she knew that the king had his wandering eye fixed on wife number seven. She was sp are d by his de ath and married the attractive but dangeously unbalanced Seymour. Her triumph was shadowed by rivalry with the young Princess Elizabeth, whose lands and influence the lecherous Seymour coveted. Catherine won the contest, but a gr eat co st. ..." VICTORY IN THE ST. LAWRENCE: CANADA'S UNKNOWN WAR., Essex, James W.
186 Essex, James W. VICTORY IN THE ST. LAWRENCE: CANADA'S UNKNOWN WAR.
Erin, Ontario Boston Mills Press 1984 0919822568 / 9780919822566 First Edition Near Fine Very Good
160 pp, 11 1/4" H. Map endpapers (showing locations of ships torpedoed in Gulf and River of St. Lawrence and Canada's Coastal Waters), b&w photographs, drawings. "The sailor next to me reached into his topcoat pocket and hurriedly proferred a crumpled photograph. I recognized it as the military funeral of 1942 at the tiny Anglican Church just down the road. It was the burial of a seaman from the HMCS 'Charlottetown', one of several who had been rescued, only to die of wounds later. He was killed in Canada by the Nazis. This book in a real sense, then, is his story and the story of hundreds of others who perished because of the German U-boats in the St. Lawrence. As Cmdr. George Bernard, Naval Officer in Command, Gaspe from 1943 to the war's end said in later years: 'In 1942, marauding U-Boats entered the Gulf of St. Lawrence and did a great deal of damage. They roamed the Gulf and River St. Lawrence at will and were seldom opposed. They sank Canadian warships and valuable merchant vessels almost with impunity.' According to Bernard, it was for this reason that Canadian authorities played down the episode. They were prepared to accept the consequences because warships which might have attacked the U-boats invading our inland waters were wanted more urgently elsewhere. This was 'Victory in the St. Lawrence' - initially for the German U-boat: Canada's turn would come next. But what happened to both remained locked in the memories of the participants only now being revealed long years after the war ended. This was 'Canada's Unknown War'." Minor wrinkle at top of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, minor rubbing.

THE PITY OF WAR. EXPLAINING WORLD WAR I., Ferguson, Niall.
191 Ferguson, Niall. THE PITY OF WAR. EXPLAINING WORLD WAR I.
Basic Books, New York, 1999, book club edition.
563 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs, tables, graphs. "More than four million Americans were mobilized in 1917-18, of whom more than 100,000 were killed - double the number who died in Vietnam. This was the fir st, bloody step on the road to globalism which would characterize our foreign policy for the rest of the twentieth century. Even American literature was transformed by the impact of the war on writers like Hemingway and Fitzgerald. Internat i o n a l l y , more than any other event, the First World War made the twentieth century what it was: It toppled the four great empires of the Old World and left a fifth - the British - mortgaged to the hilt. More than nine million men lost their li ve s, y et n on e of its stated objectives were met. Rather, it spawned seven decades of Communist rule in Russia, the rise of Adolf Hitler's Third Reich, and the horror of the Holocaust. Now, as the century draws to a close, the time is righ t f or a r adi cal re ass essment of the 'Great War'. In (this book, the author) explodes the myths of 1914-18. He argues that the fatal conflict between Britain and Germany was far from inevitable. It was Britain's declaration of war that needl essl y t urne d a cont inen tal conflict into a world war, and it was Britain's economic mismanagement and military inferiority that necessitated American involvement, forever altering the global balance of power. Ferguson vividly brings back to li fe on e of the semi nal c atast roph es of the century, not through a dry citation of chronological chapter and verse, but through a series of brilliant chapters that answer the key questions: Why did the war start? Why did it continue? And why did it st op? How d id th e Germ ans ma nage to kill more soldiers than they lost but still end up defeated in November 1918? Above all, why did men fight?" TIAN WEN: A CHINESE BOOK OF ORIGINS., Field, Stephen, translator. Calligraphy by T.C. Ma.
193 Field, Stephen, translator. Calligraphy by T.C. Ma. TIAN WEN: A CHINESE BOOK OF ORIGINS.
New Directions, New York, 1986, first edition.
123 pp, 8vo (8 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0811210103 "Relatively unknown in the West, (this book) is a fascinating, though often baffling, archaic collection of 186 'questions' about the origins of life and the meaning of a wide vari ety of happenings startling and mundane, earthly and celestial. Because the poem has no single narrative thread, the most informed speculation posits group authorship by a number of roving Taoist scholars, each contributing riddles about t h e h i s t o r y and legends of his own province as well as ironically posed inquiries into the nature of the universe. The enigmatic and sometimes Sphinxlike conundrums may have been originally intended for debate - to give the popular and promi ne nt di al ec ti ci an s of over 2,300 years ago a tool for honing their convoluted responses. But however the poem took on its present shape and content, it remains the single most comprehensive catalogue of ancient Chinese mythology and pre-Imp eri al l ege nd in exi ste nce . This translation....combines sound scholarship with an artful grace to produce the 186 questions in couplets that both tease and enchant. In addition to a historical introduction that clearly explains what is known and no t know n a bou t th e po em, Field provides extensive notes to help the English-speaking reader understand the basic Chinese myths alluded to in the questions." 270 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). "After spending the greater part of a decade traveling around the island of Newfoundland, at 'the edge of North America', beloved nature writer and host of an NPR radio series Robert Finch chronicles the people, geography, and wildlife of this remote and lovely place. From the shear cliffs of Cape Spear overlooking the Atlantic, the beaches of Sandy Cove (about eight miles by road from Squid Tickle), the steep streets of St. John's, and the moss-covered tundra of the southern coast, Finch carefully collects the intimate stories of birds and moose and foxes - and the people who share their space. He evokes an untrammeled landscape of raw beauty even as he tells a tale of economic hardship, with the local cod fisheries deplete and very little industry to replace it. Finch's ear is finely attuned to the vernaclar of Newfoundlander's stories; he revels in the particular cadences and unexpected movement of their tales. With a boundless curiosity, a profound appreciation for the beauty of everyday life and prose as hospitable and full of good humor as the people he encounters, Finch brings alive a wide array of characters - fishermen, hunters and hitchhikers, newcomers and old timers - and an island tucked between provinces, languages, and cultures, a land of ancient hardship and stirring beauty." 128 pp, 11 1/4" H. "Strategically located at the confluence of the St. Lawrence River, the Rideau River system and Lake Ontario, the city of Kingston is cloaked in more than three hundred years of history. This picturesque city has attracted an increasing number of artists in recent years, and two of them - poet Joan Finnigan and painter Frank Johnston - have captured the character and spirit of Kingston in a book filled with photographs old and new, maps and engravings, paintings, drawings, historical vignettes and poetry. With an emphasis on the human aspects of Kingston life, (it) is an expression of affection not just for the city and its environs, but for its populace over the generations. Ten original watercolours by Frank Johnston - all faithfully reproduced in full colour - add to the beauty of the book. Along with the wealth of modern and archival material, they reflect the unique atmosphere of a city that has played a significant role in the history of Canada." 199 pp, 11 1/4" H. (B)rings together reproductions of over 170 paintings, drawings, watercolours and prints, in which 130 individual artists have interpreted aspects of the city of Toronto, from its incorporation in 1834 right up to the present day. Although organized in five chronological sections, it is not simply an illustrated history of the city. Rather it is a gallery of pictures accompanied by explanatory texts. Special emphasis has been given to new and unfamiliar material, and over 100 of the pictures in the book have never been reproduced before. Care has also been taken to reflect the ethnic, religious, social and cultural diversity of the city. The big names are here, among them such figures as Paul Kane, Sanford Fleming and Robert Harris from the Victorian period, several members of the Group of Seven, and more recent masters such as Jack Bush and David Milne. But here also are a host of less famous artists: some city residents, some passing visitors, some anonymous, some amateurs whose enthusiasm was greater than their talent. All, however, in their own ways, have made a vital contribution to our record of Toronto as it was and is." Minor scuff on bottom edge of front board, book slightly curved. Dust jacket has been price-clipped, very light edge wrinkling, three small edge tears archivally taped, slight waviness to back panel.

381 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). Red cloth with gold lettering/banding on spine. B&w illustrations (1 colour), fold-out map. "The period covered by this book is one of the most important in the history of Toronto. It begins in February, 1815, when news of the end of the War of 1812 reached York, and ends on March 6, 1834, when Toronto became the first incorporated city in Ontario. During this time it had changed from a small, undistinguished village, whose main reason for being was that it was the capital of Upper Canada, to a booming city. Immigration increased the population fourteen-fold, and gave to Toronto the strongly British attitudes it was to maintain for more than a century. Individuals acting alone could no longer accomplish what was needed by the burgeoning community, and the citizens of York combined to provide a more or less efficient system for coping with their problems. Towards the end of the period political animus and the outbreak of cholera complicated its smooth functioning, but nevertheless the prototypes of many of Toronto's present institutions were established at this time."
