191 Ryan, William and Pitman, Walter. NOAH'S FOOD: THE NEW SCIENTIFIC DISCOVERIES ABOUT THE EVENT THAT CHANGED HISTORY.
New York Simon & Schuster 1998 0684810522 / 9780684810522 First Edition Very Good Very Good Anastasia Sotiropoulos. Maps by William Haxby.
319 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w drawings, maps. (The authors teamed) "up with oceanographers from Bulgaria and Russia, as well as Turkey, to explore the Black Sea. Using sound waves and coring devices to probe the sea floor, they discovered clear evidence that this inland body of water had once been a vast freshwater lake lying hundreds of feet below the level of the world's rising oceans. Sophisticated dating techniques confirmed that 7,600 years ago the mounting sea had burst through the narrow Bosporus valley, and the salt water of the Mediterranean had poured into the lake with unimaginable force, racing over beaches and up rivers, destroying or chasing all life before it. The margins of the lake, which had been a unique oasis, a Garden of Eden for an advanced culture in a vast region of semidesert, became a sea of death. The people fled, never to return. The authors explore the exciting archaeological, genetic, and linguistic evidence suggesting that the flood rapidly created a human diaspora that spread as far as Western Europe, Central Asia, China, Egypt, and the Persian Gulf. They suggest that the Black Sea People could well have been the mysterious proto-Sumerians, who developed the first great civilization in Mesopotamia, the source of our own. Could the people who fled the Black Sea Flood and their descendants have preserved for thousands of years the stories that became the myths we know today? Ryan and Pitman show how illiterate story-tellers in (the 20th century) still recited tales thousands of lines in length that had been transmitted down through the ages with remarkable fidelity. So, they argue, the mythology of the Great Flood is an oral narrative, preserving the memory of a traumatic event - the great divide in human history." Very light browning to edges of boards, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, soft crease at top edge of front panel.

317 pp, 9 1/2" H. "We are all aware of the power of money - how it influences our moods, compels us to take risks, and serves as the yardstick of success in societies around the world. Yet because we take the daily reality of money so completely for granted, we seldom question how and why it has come to play such a central role in our lives. (The author) casts aside our workaday assumptions about money and takes the reader on a global quest to uncover a deeper understanding of the relationship between money and humankind. More than a mere history of its subject, this riveting book probes the conceptual origins and evolution of money by examining it through the multiple lenses of disciplines as varied as biology, psychology, anthropology, and theology. 'Coined' is not only a profoundly informative discussion of the concept of money, but it is also an endlessly fascinating and entertaining take on the nature of humanity and the inner workings of the mind." That is where the hero spent his childhood, and that was his point of departure on a voyage in the best 'Treasure Island' vein that carried him to the other side of the world and back. When he does at last succeed in becoming an apprentice aboard the 'Sir Thomas Hobson', he is full of excitement at the thought of what lies ahead. 229 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w photographs, drawings (by the author). "Cornelius Cole Smith was above all else a professional soldier. His army career spanned thirty turbulent years, April 9, 1890 to April 9, 1920. He witnessed the transformation of the United States from a second-class military power prior to the Spanish-American War to the most powerful nation on earth after World War I. He participated in the final Indian campaigns, the brutal conquest of the Moros on the Philippine Islands and the birth pangs of the American Labor Movement. This varied career took 'Corney' Smith from the sun-baked deserts of Arizona to the bone-chilling plains of the Dakotas, from the tropical jungles of Mindano to the beautiful parks of the Sierra Nevada, and from fever-ridden camps in Tampa to a diplomatic post in Bogota. Regardless of the surroundings, he brought the same diligence and professionalism to each assignment. (This) soldier's writings of his life and times provide the basis for a forthright glimpse into another era. His voluminous diaries and reminiscences amount to a second career which added lustre to the first. Corney's perceptive and continuing observations reveal the excitement, color, pathos and suffering that surrounded him." Very minor edge wear. Dust jacket has been price clipped, has minor edge wear, one tiny tear archivally taped, fading to spine color, minor rubbing.
