Airlife, Shrewsbury, 1993.
204 pp, 8 5/8" H, soft cover. ISBN 1853103969 B&w photographs. "Alan Cooper writes about an operation which at the time and ever since has captured the imagination of the world - the attack on the German dams in May 1943. This forms a deeply-res earched history of one of the most successful operations of the Second World War carried out by the famous 617 Squadron led by Guy Gibson. This account includes the whole lead up to the final mission; the development of the bouncing bomb, the f o r m i ng of 617 Squadron and the intense course of training carried out to make the operation a success. The raid itself is viewed from both British and German camps; many of the aircrew who took part in 617 operations give their accounts, as d o se ve ra l Germans, including Albert Speer, the Armaments Minister. All in all, the book recreates the excitement and aura of danger and uncertainty which surrounded the dam busters' mission, giving the reader the full story of one of the great es t epi sod es of the war." London Chapman & Hall 1965 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
216 pp, 8vo (8 3/4"). Pictorial endpapers, b&w plates. "Mr. Cooper takes up his story with the formation of Cromwell's New Model Army, which marked a significant change in cavalry tactics, and closes it with a chapter devoted to the South African War and the years up to the beginning of the 1914 War. In addition, he has written an epilogue to cover the period of cavalry's gradual surrender to mechanisation. Between these points lie nearly three hundred years of history and countless battles which depended for their outcome on the ability and efficiency of the cavalry arm. (He) does not attempt to describe each of these battles in detail; rather, he is concerned, by giving accounts of a series of battles typical of a campaign, or of aspects of the training and tactics of cavalry - Blenheim, Dettingen, Salamanca, Waterloo, Balaclava, etc. - to give a historical impression of the arm's growth and achievements." Short crease at top of pages 73 to 80 - causes some indentation on adjacent pages, minor edge wear, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, minor soiling at bottom of spine. 193 Corrigan, Gordon. MUD, BLOOD AND POPPYCOCK: BRITAIN AND THE FIRST WORLD WAR.
London Cassell 2003 0304359556 / 9780304359554 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
431 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). B&w maps, photographs, diagrams. "The First World War was a unique experience for the United Kingdom: the only time Britain fielded a mass army that opposed the main enemy in the primary theatre of war. One consequence of this 'continental commitment' was that Britain suffered many more casualties in 1914-18 than in the Second World War, a factor that has coloured post-1945 attitudes to 'the Great War'. Yet, as Gordon Corrigan reveals, the First World War was neither unnecessary nor badly conducted - two claims made with such frequency in the 1960s that they became the new orthodoxy. The British Army did make mistakes during the First World War, but most were honest errors made by men as well trained and as well prepared as they could be, given the unprecedented expansion of the pre-1914 army into a force of over three million men and women. (He has) come to the conclusion that Field Marshal Sir Douglas Haig, far from being the 'butcher and bungler' of popular belief, was the man who took a tiny British army and expanded it, trained it and prepared it, until it was the only Allied army capable of defeating the Germans militarily in 1918." Very slight cigarette odor, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling, very light rubbing.

QUADRANTUS REX., Coulehan, Norbert.
194 Coulehan, Norbert. QUADRANTUS REX.
Macmillan, London, 1959, first edition.
298 pp, small 8vo (7 5/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. "In the second year B.C. the Emperor Augustus decided to call a conference for world peace, 'Pax Mundana', and despatched a young sea tribune, Titus to collect and escort to Rome the three gr eat Kings from Africa, Asia and the Baltic. This, in the first place, is the story of how Titus carried out his unusual assignment, the hazards and dangers of his voyages and his difficulties, both practical and diplomatic, with his noble c h a r g e s . But no less important than the sea tribune is Quadrantus, the Master of the squaresailer in which he travelled. It is soon apparent that this is no ordinary ship and Quadrantus is no ordinary master: a giant of a man, he runs his du mb c re w wi th u n canny precision and his navigation and seamanship verge on the miraculous. After the fruitless conference, Titus and Quadrantus escort the three Kings on what seems a hopeless mission to King Herod. Guided by a strange st a r, the Ki ngs a re lan ded n ear Philippi, and the half-whispered stories of the phenomena which heralded the Birth of Christ and the legend of a fourth King who set off for Bethlehem with his fellows yet failed to arrive, are given an unexpect ed tw ist when see n t hro ugh the mir ror of Norbert Coulehan's narrative." Tiny foxing specks on the top and fore-edge of the textblock, light to moderate edge wear, small bump at top of spine, light wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket i s p rice cli pped, has ligh t to mod erat e ed ge wear/wrinkling, very small chips and tears at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, light rubbing, light browning on flap-folds. THE REAL FIGARO: THE EXTRAORDINARY CAREER OF CARON DE BEAUMARCHAIS., Cox, Cynthia.
196 Cox, Cynthia. THE REAL FIGARO: THE EXTRAORDINARY CAREER OF CARON DE BEAUMARCHAIS.
New York Coward-McCann 1963 First American Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
212 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). B&w plates. "(A) biography of a brilliant and impudent man living in eighteenth-century France: Caron de Beaumarchais. It was a life of fantastic adventure. Inventor, secret agent, politician, courtier, publisher and supplier of arms to the American colonies, Beaumarchais also wrote plays. Music lovers enchanted by Mozart's 'The Marriage of Figaro" and Rossini's 'The Barber of Seville' remember that they are based on the brilliant comedies of Beaumarchais. Born Pierre Caron in 1732, Beaumarchais was the son of a prosperous Parisian clockmaker. As a child, he was apprenticed to his father, became fairly famous in the field of watchmaking and invented several new and complicated devices. He soon found wider scope by buying an appointment at the Court of Louis XV, where he swiftly rose to the highest favor. The King sent him on a secret mission to Madrid, and he returned to find himself accused of forgery and embezzlement. He became emeshed in a series of legal actions in which he fought vigorously to maintain his honor. Louis XV, meanwhile, sent him secretly to London to stop a blackmailer from publishing scandal about the royal mistress, Madame du Barry. The next King, Louis XVI, gave him two similar missions; the first, to smother a scurrilous attempt to libel Marie-Antoinette, took him to London, Amsterdam and Vienna; the second, to recover some papers of the late King which were of explosive importance, involved him in London with the extraordinary Chevalier d'Eon, a secret agent who, on occasion, wore female dress and was widely (but wrongly) believed to be a woman. While in England, Beaumarchais allied himself with the cause of the American colonies; and when Louis XVI refused to aid the rebels openly, (he) organized a private firm to supply them with arms and munitions as well as ships, with astonishing results. Meanwhile, his play 'The Barber of Seville' had been acclaimed and its sequel, 'The Marriage of Figaro', so audaciously mocked the Government that for five years the King forbade its performance. But when public readings spread its fame, and when the ban was reluctantly lifted, all Paris fought to see it. When the Revolution broke out, Beaumarchais witnessed the storming of the Bastille. In 1792 false rumors caused an hysterical mob to invade his ostentatious mansion; he escaped to a friend's house. Later he was arrested, released through influence of a woman, and after further adventures he found himself a proscribed refugee in Hamburg. He returned to France in 1796 and died there three years later." A few small faint foxing marks on free endpapers, light wrinkling at top/ bottom of spine, very small dint at top edge of front board, tiny foxing marks at edges of illustration pages. Dust jacket has been price clipped, has light edge wear/wrinkling/creasing - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, tiny closed tears at bottom of spine and on rear hinge, minor foxing on edges of flaps.

197 Craig, Norman. THE BROKEN PLUME: A PLATOON COMMANDER'S STORY, 1940-45.
London Imperial War Museum 1982 0901627224 / 9780901627223 Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+ Charles Freeman drawings.
191 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). Monotone drawings by Charles Freeman, b&w photographs, maps. "The author's experiences as a platoon commander in the Second World War were shared by many others but few published accounts capture so faithfully the particular flavour of that conflict or the impact of battle on the individual soldier. Norman Craig was a conscript, commissioned after a year in the ranks. He served in three infantry regiments: the Welch in the United Kingdom; the Royal Sussex in the Western Desert, and Iraq and Persia; and the East Surreys in Italy. He saw action at El Alamein and in northern Italy where, only a fortnight before the end of the war in Europe, he was wounded. Between these spells of fighting he was concerned with the routine of soldiering - training, parades, courses, inspections and regimental chores - which occupied the greater part of of a subaltern's time. Norman Craig writes perceptively and with unusual candour about his war service. His book is both a personal record of considerable human interest and a significant addition to the literature of the Second World War." Minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor edge wear/wrinkling, minor soiling on front flap.

319 pp, 9 1/4" H. One of 'The Canadian Centenary Series'. B&w plates. "Canada's declaration of war against Germany in 1939 marked the beginning of the most significant eighteen-year period in the history of this nation. By the end of the Liberal regime in 1957 the country had undergone immense growth in human and material resources. The experience of the Second World War had been followed by participation in the Korean War and ten years of the Cold War. The Great Depression had given way to a boom which had continued through the exchange crisis, serious inflation and minor recessions. In addition, new life had been generated in the arts. The new road which Canada chose to follow led directly to a new world of planning and management, of economic controls and social equalization." Very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket is price-clipped, has wrinkling at top/bottom of spine - light elsewhere, rubbing and scratch to glossy front panel, a few tiny tears archivally taped, tiny scuff and tiny dent on rear panel, minor soiling.
