MAKING FRIENDS WITH HITLER: LORD LONDONDERRY, THE NAZIS AND THE ROAD TO WORLD WAR II., Kershaw, Ian.

Penguin, New York, 2004, first American edition.
488 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1594200300 B&w map, plates. "Charles Stewart Henry Vane-Tempest-Stewart, the 7th Marquess of Londonderry, was born to power and command. Scion of one of Britain's most aristocratic fa milies, cousin of Churchill and confidant of the king, owner of vast coal fields and landed estates, married to the doyenne of London's social scene, Londonderry was an ornament to his class, the 0.1 percent of the population who still owned 3 0 p e r c ent of England's wealth as late as 1930. But history has not been kind to 'Charley', as the king called him, because, in his own words, he 'backed the wrong horse', and a very dark horse indeed: Adolf Hitler and his Nazi party. Londonde rr y w as h ar dly the only British aristocrat to do so, but he was the only cabinet member to do so, and it ruined him. In a final irony, his grand London house was bombed by the German Luftwaffe in the blitz. Ian Keshaw is not out to rehabilit ate L ord Lo ndo nde rry but to understand him and to expose why he was made a scapegoat for views that were much more widely held than anyone now likes to think." KNIGHTS OF THE AIR: THE LIFE AND TIMES OF THE EXTRAORDINARY PIONEERS WHO FIRST BUILT BRITISH AEROPLANES., King, Peter.
184 King, Peter. KNIGHTS OF THE AIR: THE LIFE AND TIMES OF THE EXTRAORDINARY PIONEERS WHO FIRST BUILT BRITISH AEROPLANES.
University of Iowa Press, Iowa City, 1989.
544 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0877452652 "(The) story of the men who spent their youth designing and building England's first flying-machines: the men who pioneered the British aircraft industry. Some of their airc raft have achieved immortality - the legendary Pup, Camel, Spitfire, Hurricane and Lancaster. But of the men who designed and built them, men like Frederick Handley Page, Tommy Sopwith, George Holt Thomas and Geoffrey de Havilland, perhaps o n l y R o l ls and Royce are still household names. These pioneers of aviation development began to build their empires during Worl;d War I, although several of them crashed during the bleak period that followed. World War II revived their fortun es , as so me ho w they met the challenge of enormously increased production and helped save England from invasion. They tested the early jets and speedily built the first post-war jet airliner. But already they were making errors which would res ult i n b a nkr upt cie s, forced mergers and foreign takeovers. Peter King describes the knight in all their glamour, skill, idiosyncrasy, greed, flair and desire for power. Quotations from previously unpublished papers, from colleagues and cont empo rar ies, a nd f rom cust omers (governments, the British Air Force, commercial airlines) for the first time describe how wilful they could be, as well as how brilliantly enterprising and entertaining." SKY GODS: THE SUN AND MOON IN ART AND MYTH., Komaroff, Katherine.
185 Komaroff, Katherine. SKY GODS: THE SUN AND MOON IN ART AND MYTH.
New York Universe Books 1974 0876631871 / 9780876631874 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Very Good-
86 pp, 11 5/8" H. B&w and colour illustrations. "Ever since the beginning of time, man has wondered about the meaning and behavior of the sun and moon. He has carefully observed their cycles and realized their importance for his own survival. The close contact with nature that ancient man enjoyed made him more conscious of their presence, whether he lived in a place constantly warmed by the sun or in a bitter cold world where the sun seemed far away. Ancient men tried to explain the meaning of this mysterious phenomenon in stories closely related to their own lives and religious beliefs. The Hindu people of India thought that the sun was a red man with four arms in a golden chariot. For the Egyptians, the sun was a great watchful eye. The North American Indians said that the moon was a great ball of light tossed into the sky by a clever creature called Raven. The Eskimos believed that the moon was a powerful hunter who often stood in front of his igloo. These stories, called myths, are handed down from generation to generation, and celebrate the great mystery of life. They are loved because of their beauty and power and also for what they tell us about people of other cultures. In 'Sky Gods', myths from India, Egypt, Africa, Japan, China, the Eskimos, and the Indians of North and South America are lucidly retold and illustrated with stunning photographs of art and artifacts from the various cultures. There is a common message behind all these stories. Although the masks, paintings, statues, and other works of art also vary - some are relatively simple, others are highly sophisticated - yet they all contain clues to a deeper understanding of the beauty and mysteriousness of the universe." Two large diagonal creases on free rear endpaper, light stain along bottom edge of rear board, very small light stain on top edge of front board, one soft corner crease. Dust jacket has been price-clipped, has light to moderate edge wear - mainly at top/bottom of spine, light rubbing and two light scuff lines on rear panel, small stain at inside bottom edge of rear panel, one small edge tear.

302 pp, 9 1/4" H. Pictorial endpapers, b&w illustrations. Through them, he revisits thrilling turning points in American history, including the single sniper shot that turned the tide of the Revolutionary War, the firearms designs that proved decisive at Gettsyburg, the 'gun that won the West', and the weapons that gave U.S. soldiers an edge in the world wars and beyond. This is also the story of how firearms innovation, creativity, and industrial genius has constantly pushed American history - and power - forward." Light wrinkling at bottom of spine. 187 Lapp, Ralph E. Foreword by Stewart Alsop. THE NEW FORCE: THE STORY OF ATOMS AND PEOPLE.
New York Harper & Brothers 1953 Hard Cover Very Good Fair
238 pp, 8 3/8" H. Contents: Foreword; About People and Atomic Energy; The New Force; From Manhattan to Nagasaki; Postwar Development; Destruction Unlimited; The Atomic Impasse; Battlefield A-Weapons; Peacetime Power; Atomic Engines; The Atom - Man's Servant; Secrecy and the Atom; Power for the Future; Index. "The story beings with early atomic experiments in distant laboratories in Italy and Germany and leads swiftly up to Professor Einstein's fateful letter to President Roosevelt, and the overnight mobilization of American science. We see the mammoth plants at Oak Ridge and Hanford thrown up in haste to solve the riddle of separating the U-235 isotope from the U-238, the first controlled chain reaction in the squash courts of a Middlewest university; the crucial work in the laboratories at Los Alamos. (It) brings the military and diplomatic story up to date, detailing the atomic scientists' 'march on Washington', the establishment of the AEC, the Bikini tests, the multiplying of the A-bomb's destructive power; and, within seven short years, the coming of the H-bomb. And there is the story of atomic energy's present and future potential in peace as well as in war - as an instrument for industrial power as well as military; for science, medicine, agriculture as well as (perhaps instead of) strategic and tactical weapons." 998 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). Map endpapers. B&w maps. "World War II eventually involved every major power in the world, and before it was over some fifty million people lost their lives. (This) is a complete political and military history of World War II. Written with the pace and sweep of a fine novel, it makes the period, its major leaders, and the events not only comprehensible but also alive and real. Robert Leckie begins his book with the punitive treaty of Versailles and the fumbling efforts of the Western democracies to cope with the rise of Mussolini and Hitler. He draws vivid profiles of the political leaders, generals, and admirals who created and fought the war; describes the battles; analyzes the military strategy; considers the economic and political factors; and tells of the daily lives of those who were engaged on the far-flung fronts and those who endured at home. Churchill, Stalin, Roosevelt, MacArthur, Tojo, Eisenhower, Montgomery, Rommel and many other fascinating individuals become live protagonists on the stage sets of such dramatic sites as Stalingrad, Tobruk, Guadalcanal, Dunkirk, Leningrad, Monte Cassino, Midway, Omaha Beach, and Iwo Jima. Readers of all ages will find Leckie's powerful, action-packed narrative both compelling and comprehensive, and they will gain fascinating insights into one of the greatest and most awful events in human history." Collins, Toronto, 1948.
192 pp, mass market paperback. "This is a novel of unusual originality and power. A women of the streets is found murdered in her Soho lodging. A young business man with a wife and children is accused of murdering her. The trial which follows is the focal point, almost the central character, of this book. Through it and around it move a host of people, the judge, counsel, jurors, the accused, his family, the witnesses, the friends and associates of the murdered girl. The persona l i t y a n d private life of each is explored so far as it is relevant, thus building up a diverse cross-section of everyday life at different levels in the Temple, in the theatre, in Fleet Street, in respectable suburbs and in the dubious hinter la nd o f L on do n' s west end. As an undercurrent beneath the dramatic story there is an implied, but none the less sharp, criticism of certain aspects of the legal system." "(I)n this gripping full-length account of his first exile we see Napoleon not as the Man of Destiny but scaled down to human size, his field of action no longer the whole of Europe but the comic-opera kingdom of Elba. Even on this tiny island the habits of power persisted, and Napoleon acted the role of the great commander, the lawgiver, the patron of the arts and sciences, and in all his dealings r e v e a l e d himself as an egotist of great personal charm. (The author's) account of his year in exile is an exciting story of plot and counter-plot, of careless statesmen, political intriguers, dissident soldiers, and secret agents. Napoleon' s wa it in g ga me on Elba is played against a background of unrest in France, muddle in England, and warlike quarrels among the Allies trying to redraw the map of Europe at the Congress of Vienna." 197 Mackinnon, J.B. and Shadbolt, Sydney. THE SOUTH AFRICAN CAMPAIGN, 1879. WITH NEW INDEX BY JOHN YOUNG. ISBN 1-85567-203-3
Greenhill, London, (1995), reprint of 1882 edition.
397 pp, small 4to (10 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. 2 maps on fold-out at rear, 62 b&w photos of officers who lost their lives during the campaign. "In January 1979, Victorian Britain was horrified by the news of the disaster at Isandhlwana, where the Zulus surprised and massacred a British Army column of over 1,300 men. This defeat was followed by the heroic defence of the mission station at Rorke's Drift where no less than eleven Victoria Crosses were won. After minor set backs, British columns rapidly advanced into Zululand and after fighting a number of major battles, occupying strategic positions en route, they subsequently fought and won the decisive battle of Ulundi, where the real military power of the Zulu nation was ended forever. This volume contains: Cabinet photographs and biographical notices of sixty-two officers of the British Army and Navy who lost their lives during the campaign, including that of Lieutenant Thirkill of the 88th Regt., which did not appear in the original edition of 1880; Summaries of all the British Regiments and Naval Brigades in the field; Separate records of almost every British Officer engaged; Accurate accounts of the various engagements; Maps etc." "A significant feature of this new edition is an extensive index compiled by Anglo-Zula War historian John Young, giving the name, rank and unit designation of every officer, and the battles at which they fought". Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, a few soft creases on fold-out. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling, tiny dent on rear hinge, tiny stain on inside surface, minor wear at top of spine. 244 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w and colour photographs. Inscribed on half title page: "To P___ B___ Merry Xmas Frank Mahovlich 27" and signed "Ted Mahovlich". The black marker used in the signing/inscription has bled through the page somewhat. "Hockey fans who saw Frank Mahovlich play will never forget the combination of power and grace that defined the on-ice presence of a hockey superstar. Growing up in Schumacher, Ontario, Frank graduated from the St. Michael's Majors to the Toronto Maple Leafs at age nineteen. In his first year in the National Hockey League, 1957-58, he beat out Chicago sensation Bobby Hull for the Calder Trophy as rookie of the year. And so began a career that spanned twenty-one years in the NHL and World Hockey Association. Rich with anecdotes, 'The Big M' captures the spirit and times of a Hall of Famer career: four Stanley Cups with the great Leafs teams of the '60s'; his bitter struggle with Punch Imlach; the infamous million-dollar deal with the Chicago Blackhawks; the Leafs-Red Wings trade that saw Frank hook up with Alex Delvecchio and Gordie Howe to form the Production Line II; the end of the six-team era; glory years in Montreal and two more Stanley Cups; the 1972 Canada/Russia series; his move to the WHA's Toronto Toros and the wild stories from a league of a different kind; the Senate appointment and personal reflections." Previous owner's place, Christmas notation, date and signature on free front endpaper; light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has some very light rubbing, very light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.
