Toronto University of Toronto Press 1983 0802055842 / 9780802055842 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good George Heriot.
310 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w reproductions. He was also a travel writer and a poet. In this volume, a combination of biography and art history, Gerald Finaly presents, for the first time, a rounded picture of Heriot, revealing his motives and ideals while also illuminating the texture of life in Canada during the early years of settlement. In describing Heriot's several roles as artist, administrator, patriot, spy, Fnley presents a portrait of an eighteenth-century gentleman whose superficial desires were for an active public life but whose deeper yearnings were for a life of contemplation. This volume serves to recognize Heriot's artistic achievement and to accord him the place he deserves in the history of Canadian art and the country itself." Minor wrinkling at top of spine, three small faint stains on rear board.

185 Finnigan, Joan. KINGSTON: CELEBRATE THIS CITY.
Toronto McClelland & Stewart 1976 0771031602 / 9780771031601 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Very Good Frank C. Johnston.
128 pp, 11 1/4" H. "Strategically located at the confluence of the St. Lawrence River, the Rideau River system and Lake Ontario, the city of Kingston is cloaked in more than three hundred years of history. This picturesque city has attracted an increasing number of artists in recent years, and two of them - poet Joan Finnigan and painter Frank Johnston - have captured the character and spirit of Kingston in a book filled with photographs old and new, maps and engravings, paintings, drawings, historical vignettes and poetry. With an emphasis on the human aspects of Kingston life, (it) is an expression of affection not just for the city and its environs, but for its populace over the generations. Ten original watercolours by Frank Johnston - all faithfully reproduced in full colour - add to the beauty of the book. Along with the wealth of modern and archival material, they reflect the unique atmosphere of a city that has played a significant role in the history of Canada." Light wrinkle down five pages - mostly at front of book (likely from manufacturing process). Dust jacket has minor edge wear, some light edge wrinkling - mainly at top of front panel and flap.

TORONTO IN ART: 150 YEARS THROUGH ARTISTS' EYES., Firth, Edith G.
186 Firth, Edith G. TORONTO IN ART: 150 YEARS THROUGH ARTISTS' EYES.
Toronto Fitzhenry & Whiteside / City of Toronto 1983 0889027129 / 9780889027121 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
199 pp, 11 1/4" H. (B)rings together reproductions of over 170 paintings, drawings, watercolours and prints, in which 130 individual artists have interpreted aspects of the city of Toronto, from its incorporation in 1834 right up to the present day. Although organized in five chronological sections, it is not simply an illustrated history of the city. Rather it is a gallery of pictures accompanied by explanatory texts. Special emphasis has been given to new and unfamiliar material, and over 100 of the pictures in the book have never been reproduced before. Care has also been taken to reflect the ethnic, religious, social and cultural diversity of the city. The big names are here, among them such figures as Paul Kane, Sanford Fleming and Robert Harris from the Victorian period, several members of the Group of Seven, and more recent masters such as Jack Bush and David Milne. But here also are a host of less famous artists: some city residents, some passing visitors, some anonymous, some amateurs whose enthusiasm was greater than their talent. All, however, in their own ways, have made a vital contribution to our record of Toronto as it was and is." Minor scuff on bottom edge of front board, book slightly curved. Dust jacket has been price-clipped, very light edge wrinkling, three small edge tears archivally taped, slight waviness to back panel.

187 Firth, Edith G., edited and with introduction by. THE TOWN OF YORK 1793-1815: A COLLECTION OF DOCUMENTS OF EARLY TORONTO.
Toronto Champlain Society for Government of Canada/University of Toronto Press 1966 Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
381 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). Red cloth with gold lettering/banding on spine. B&w illustrations (1 colour), fold-out map. "The period covered by this book is one of the most important in the history of Toronto. It begins in February, 1815, when news of the end of the War of 1812 reached York, and ends on March 6, 1834, when Toronto became the first incorporated city in Ontario. During this time it had changed from a small, undistinguished village, whose main reason for being was that it was the capital of Upper Canada, to a booming city. Immigration increased the population fourteen-fold, and gave to Toronto the strongly British attitudes it was to maintain for more than a century. Individuals acting alone could no longer accomplish what was needed by the burgeoning community, and the citizens of York combined to provide a more or less efficient system for coping with their problems. Towards the end of the period political animus and the outbreak of cholera complicated its smooth functioning, but nevertheless the prototypes of many of Toronto's present institutions were established at this time." Two faint 1" surface paper scratches/scuffs at top corner of pages xlii & xliii. Dust jacket has very rubbing, very light edge wear at top/bottom of flap-folds.

From the Foreword: "It was my good fortune to be born of parents who hewed their home out of the Canadian wilderness, and to spend my early years among the pioneers of Wentworth and Halton Counties in the Province of Ontario, the simplicity and honesty of whose lives has been steadfastly engraved upon my memory. As a result, it is perhaps only natural that a most persistent call has come to me to record in a way that will be imperishable a few of the virtues of these honest and upright lives." Montreal McGill - Queen's University Press 1979 0773503218 / 9780773503212 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good
246 pp, 9 3/8" H. Dark blue boards with lighter blue and white lettering on spine and front board - no dust jacket (as issued). Map. "(T)he first full account of a major social and political movement of the interwar years in Canada: the campaign for 'Maritime Rights' which erupted in the Atlantic provinces after World War I. (T)races the history of the movement from its origins in the decline in relative status and influence of the Maritimes that accompanied the rise of the West and the growing dominance of the Central Canadian metropolises. Maritimers saw their political influence reduced, the underpinnings of their economy - especially in the critical areas of tariffs, freight rates, and subsidies - whittled away, and Canada defined in terms that seemed to exclude them. Adopting a strategy characteristic of the progressive movements of the period, they attempted through organization and agitation to restore their position. Farmers, fishermen, manufacturers, and organized labour articulated their demands, through the provincial press, boards of trade, union locals, educational conferences, and mass delegations to Ottawa. Although their efforts were largely defeated by the conflicting interests of stronger regions, and by the King government's adroitness in defusing protest through a policy of study and delay, the author believes that the aroused Maritimers had succeeded in establishing their difficulties in the public's mind as a national problem." Light edge wear, tear at top of last index page archivally taped, light wrinkling on page leaf 123/124.

96 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w and color illustrations. "Sorcerers incanting over boiling cauldrons, a witch disguised as a goose, vicious poltergeists, a woman-warrior, a dangerous enchantress - these are a few of the beings that inhabit Canada's rich folklore tradition. (This) is Edith Fowke's selection of Canadian historical legends, of British and French origin, illustrated with artifacts from the collections of the Royal Ontario Museum. Of historical legends Fowke writes, 'They are more apt to be linked to a particular place or situation, and therefore reflect a country's history and culture more than other folktales'. Although native legends are often regarded as a separate study, they sometimes share motifs with non-native lore: Tecumseh, like King Arthur and Charlemagne, is a figure who in legend will one day return to lead his people. (This book) combines historical chronicle and artifact to bring to life a vanished past and the voices of those who told the tales." A few very tiny scuffs on bottom edge of boards. "(T)ells the story of Sara Jeannette Duncan, a popular Canadian writer at the turn of the century. Redney began as a beautiful young journalist, a restless romantic and a world traveller. Her writing career took her from her home in Brantford, Ontario, first to New Orleans - where she had a romantic fling with the 'Byron of the Rockies', the flamboyant Joaquin Miller - and then to adventures in Washington, Toronto, Montreal, and as far afield as Tokyo and London. Redney married and settled in India - feeling trapped, she began to write her many novels and at last summoned up the Canada of her childhood in her masterpiece, 'The Imperialist'. UNDIPLOMATIC NOTES: TALES FROM THE CANADIAN FOREIGN SERVICE., Freifeld, Sidney. Illustrated by Susan Macartney.
200 Freifeld, Sidney. Illustrated by Susan Macartney. UNDIPLOMATIC NOTES: TALES FROM THE CANADIAN FOREIGN SERVICE.
Hounslow Press / Anthony R. Hawke, Willowdale, Ontario, 1990.
194 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0888821263 B&w illustrations. "Behind formal negotiations are events sometimes too hilarious (and human) for academic histories. Beneath serene exteriors are people, who, from time to time, are clowns. And often, the expectations of dignity and protocol only serve to heighten the antics. From his 30-year career, Sidney Freifeld - at various desks at headquarters and in various embassies, up through the ranks, to ambassador - recollects some of these tales. He has gleaned others from colleagues or 'unofficial' files. Among the treats in (this book): Castro's table manners at an impromptu dinner; The circus of incivility created by the arrogance of the Ceausescu clan and their entourage; Calls in the night to deal with Moscow's howling cats; Australian VIPs lost in the bowels of the Chateau Laurier; A Canadian embassy held at gun-point, by a Canadian; and Poetry to protest External's policy on decorations. Legations run like military outposts, the needs of beavers in transit, and the exchange of diplomatic notes over a baseball game are more subjects for 'Undiplomatic Notes'. And for the uninitiated there are some useful chapters on what really, really, goes on." Previous owner's label on front pastedown, bump to bottom edge of pages, small bump to top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Very Good-/Very Good+
