A WESTMINSTER CHILDHOOD., Raynor, John. Illustrated by Dennis Flanders.
181 Raynor, John. Illustrated by Dennis Flanders. A WESTMINSTER CHILDHOOD.
Cassell, London, 1973, first edition.
213 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0304291838 B&w illustrations. "When John Raynor, composer of nearly seven hundred song settings, died so tragically in a road accident in 1970, he left behind not only his lifetime's musical work, but the manuscript of this enchanting account of the years of his childhood. His father was Arthur Guy Sandars Raynor, a famous Master of the King's Scholars at Westminster School, and the young John spent his earliest years in the g r e y p r e s ence of London's great Abbey. History and tradition were the day-long companions of the perceptive, sensitive child, who indeed was born at No. 3, Little Dean's Yard, 'that inmost court of an inner court, the quietest and dreamies t p la ce i n L on do n' . But there were sounds and colours and images that were to stay with him all his life and which he recorded so evocatively in this book: the brilliant-hued flowers of Westminster's secluded gardens; the magic of first h ea rin g t he Abb ey 's glo rio us organ; the clocks of London that became a lifelong passion; nursery fires and braziers; his mother's jewel case and his father's butterfly case, full of dazzling, glittering, shimmering things to feast a child's ey es. Te rror an d sa dne ss also cas t their shadows, to persist into later life: a haunted bedroom which drove the five-year-old boy to the brink of a nervous breakdown; the nameless, primitive horror borne on the wind from a tannery; the dreade d ch urch door whic h pro ved to have had h um an skin nailed to it; the death of a brother, killed in the holocaust of 1918. This is a quiet, gentle book, written by a gentle man whose love for the England that he knew shines as surely in these 'r ecoll ectio ns in tran quilit y' o f a happ y, com ple te childhood at the beginning of the century as it does in the songs by which he has so greatly enriched English music." 187 Rubio, Mary & Waterston, Elizabeth, editors. (L.M. Montgomery - Lucy Maud Montgomery.) THE SELECTED JOURNALS OF L.M. MONTGOMERY. VOLUME IV: 1929-1935.
Toronto Oxford University Press 1998 0195413814 / 9780195413816 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
439 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs, maps. The fourth volume of 'The Selected Journals of L.M. Montgomery' "covers a tumultuous period in the writer's life. By 1929 she was 54 years old and known world-wide as the author of 'Anne of Green Gables' and many other books, yet this was also a time of numerous setbacks: the stock market crash, a drop in royalties from her many books, the need to provide her two sons with a university education while her husband's modest church salary was often in arrears, and the fact that many loans she made to friends and family were not repaid. She faced personal crises in relations with her sons and her husband and there was furious controvery in her husband's parish, Norval Presbyterian Church. She also felt concerns over her own mental state and she became the unwilling object of a young woman's declarations of passionate love. Yet this was not a period without joy: the volume opens with happy travels to Prince Edward Island and western Canada and ends with her looking forward with great excitement to a new life in Toronto. Besides providing an intimate look into the daily life of one of the world's best-loved authors, these journals can also be read as a fascinating social history of the early twentieth century. For example, Montgomery's health concerns provide intriguing insights into the state of medical practices. Readers may shudder slightly when a bout of asthma is treated with strychnine tablets or a 'bad chill' brings out a compound of arsenic." Minor wrinkling at top of spine. Dust jacket has light wrinkling at top of spine.

196 Snow, Hank. With Jack Ownbey and Bob Burris. THE HANK SNOW STORY.
Urbana University of Illinois Press / Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame 1994 0252020898 / 9780252020896 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Near Fine
555 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "(Traces Hank Snow's) life from humble beginnings, through his emergence as an entertainer in Canada, the United States, and throughout the world, to his stature as one of the most influential figures in country music today. But more than a rags-to-riches memoir, this book presents Hank's life and career in his own voice, with remarkable candor and incredible detail. It provides the first extensive look at the early development of country music in Canada, reveals the inner workings of the music industry (including Hank's vital and unsung role in launching Elvis Presley's career), frankly discusses the nonglamorous side of stardom, and offers the reflections of an outspoken artist who has been professionally involved with country music for nearly sixty years. Through Ernest Tubb's intercession, he made his debut on Nashville's Grand Ole Opry. Disheartened by the lack of audience response, Hank nearly abandoned his dream. Then he recorded a song he had written, 'I'm Movin' On'. It climbed to the top of the charts, staying at number one for twenty-nine weeks. More hits followed, and his life and career changed forever. Over the years, Hank has entertained servicepeople on military bases in Korea, Europe, and Vietnam. Remembering his own (difficult) childhood, he established the Hank Snow Foundation for the Prevention of Child Abuse. (He was) elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame and to the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences Hall of Fame." Minor twist to spine. Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling otherwise clean and bright.

197 Soong, Stephen C., editor. SONG WITHOUT MUSIC: CHINESE TZ'U POETRY.
Renditions / Chinese University Press, Hong Kong, (1980).
282 pp, small 4to (10 5/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Chinese calligraphy, music examples, 2 color plates. "Tz'u originally was written to music to be sung; the word itself means 'song words' in Chinese. While the literary aspect of tz'u is derived from the five and seven-syllable lines of regulated verse or shih, its musical element can be traced back to the triumph, in the early T'ang dynasty, of popular foreign songs over native ones. Tz'u, in fact, is an overflow of shih. When T'ang poetry could no longer express adequately man's more refined and delicate feelings, and when the simple quatrains could not longer contain the spirit of song, it was natural for a new genre to emerge...The approach of the present volume of essays and translations of tz'u is an intimate rather than a pedantic one, for its purpose is to take the poetry-loving reader, as it were, by the hand, and welcome him into a new world. It is an attempt to present a comprehensive view of tz'u poetry, its intrinsic qualities as well as the achievements of individual writers. Through the nine interpretive essays and the eight translations of individual tz'u poets in the present anthology, the reader will gain a deeper in sight in to tz'u poetry and see its continuity in the history of Chinese literature."
