205 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs, map. "In July 1942, Major Gordon Lett was taken prisoner at the fall of Tobruk. After fourteen months in the notorious prison camps at Bari and Chieti, he escaped at the Armistice of September 1943 from the camp at Veano and took to the mountains above the Cisa Pass. Rather than return to England, he founded and led an entirely non-political band of highly-successful partisans, the Battaglione Internazionale. The group fought and harassed the Brigate Nere and the Germans along the Magra Valley from north of Pontremoli to La Spezia for eighteen months. They were so influential to the success of the Allied advance that permanent lines of communication with the Allies were established, supplies dropped by air and, later, SAS troops sent in to assist the Battalion. 500 Allied troops escaped to safety via Rossano." Each volume begins with an assessment of each commander's campaign strategy, then recounts the progress of the fighting, blow-by-blow. 188 Lustgarten, Edgar. ONE MORE UNFORTUNATE. WHITE CIRCLE POCKET EDITION CD 374.
Collins, Toronto, 1948.
192 pp, mass market paperback. "This is a novel of unusual originality and power. A women of the streets is found murdered in her Soho lodging. A young business man with a wife and children is accused of murdering her. The trial which follows is the focal point, almost the central character, of this book. Through it and around it move a host of people, the judge, counsel, jurors, the accused, his family, the witnesses, the friends and associates of the murdered girl. The persona l i t y a n d private life of each is explored so far as it is relevant, thus building up a diverse cross-section of everyday life at different levels in the Temple, in the theatre, in Fleet Street, in respectable suburbs and in the dubious hinter la nd o f L on do n' s west end. As an undercurrent beneath the dramatic story there is an implied, but none the less sharp, criticism of certain aspects of the legal system." E xt eri or - l ig ht to moderate edge wear, book is coked, very small faint stain on front cover, several soft crease on covers, closed small tear across spine. Good reading copy only.

190 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs, maps. "(T)ells the story of Canada's Athabasca area in Northern Alberta. There, one of nature's mightiest rivers and the gigantic lake into which it flows have witnessed the exploits of fur-traders, explorers, missionaries and pioneers. Dr. MacGregor presents the region before the coming of the white man, the tentative beginnings of the fur-trade, the early explorations of Samuel Hearne and Peter Pond, the probing journeys of the voyageurs, the long and bitter rivalry between the Hudson's Bay Company and the North West Company for the rich fur resources of the region. Here are tales of advernturers and settlers, the scow brigades and sternwheeler crews, the railway builders and the airplane pilots, all of whom have set their mark on the region. Of special interest in the light of recent events, is the history of the development of the Athabasca oil sands, from its early beginnings at the turn of the (20th) century to the modern extraction complex of today." Toronto McClelland & Stewart 1963 First Edition Very Good Good-
262 pp, 9 1/4" H. Map endpapers, b&w photographs, maps, reproductions. "John A. McDougall left his Ontario home in 1873 to seek his fortune in the West, first as a fur trader on the Fort Carlton Trail, and then for some fifty years as a merchant in Edmonton (population forty when he first arrived there in 1879). During his lifetime he saw the Indians signing their lands over to the Crown; watched the hamlet of Edmonton by-passed by the railroad and later cut off for weeks by hostile Indians during the second Riel Rebellion. He experienced the Edmonton boom when the Klondike rush began and the decline resulting from the gradual abandonment of the overland route to the Yukon. A long hard climb to prosperity followed. (This book) throws new light on an important section of Canadian history and illustrates the magnitude of the changes that have taken place in the West in the past hundred years." Dust jacket has several edge tears archivally taped, a few small scuffs/rub marks, very light fading on spine/hinges, some light soiling on hinges, very small closed tear on front hinge.

VERCORS CAVES. CLASSIC FRENCH CAVING - VOL. 1., Marshall, Des. Photographs by P.R. Deakin.
197 Marshall, Des. Photographs by P.R. Deakin. VERCORS CAVES. CLASSIC FRENCH CAVING - VOL. 1.
Cordee, Leicester, 1993.
100 pp, small 8vo (7 3/4" H), soft cover. ISBN 1871890713 Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs and maps. "The Vercors is a spectacular limestone area just to the south west of Grenoble with a large diversity of scenery. Beneath its rugged mountains huge areas of bare lapiaz (limestone pavements) are host to some of the most dramatic caving in France. The Antre de Damnes, for example, descends to 720m including a fine 205m pitch whereas Scialet de Pot 2 is one of the deepest shafts i n France at 319m. The mountain sides are covered in fine conifers that give way to deciduous woods in which there are wonderful displays of wild flowers the further one descends. Here a huge variety of caves are found. Large undergound r i v e r s , l i ke the one in the Grotte de Gournier, can be explored for a great distance. Massive resurgence caves are found in the valleys of which Grotte de Bournillon and the Grotte de la Luire are perhaps the most well known. The Gouffre Be rg er i s pr ob a bl y the world's most famous cave which was the first to go below the magical 1000m depth during 1956. The guide has something for everyone, whether you like big shafts, underground rivers, multi-day trips or perhaps just a pleas ant af ter no on' s j au nt as an introduction to foreign caving. The guide does not pretend to be definitive, purely a personal selection of some of the best caves in the region with details of how to find them as well as ideas about accommodati on, equi pmen t, weat her, et c. A section on how to work out the map references will be very useful to many." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - very light rubbing. Very Good+

OVER TO TUNIS: THE COMPLETE STORY OF THE NORTH AFRICAN CAMPAIGN., Marshall, Howard.
198 Marshall, Howard. OVER TO TUNIS: THE COMPLETE STORY OF THE NORTH AFRICAN CAMPAIGN.
London Eyre & Spottiswoode 1943 First Edition Good Fair Maps by L. Potter.
168 pp, 8 3/4" H. Map endpapers + 14 additional b&w maps. "It was Howard Marshall's job to broadcast the Tunisian campaign to the world. No other eye-witness not an actual protagonist has so complete a knowledge of the facts, and in this book he is able to give what could obviously not be given in a broadcast commentary - a balanced, comprehensive and outspoken account of both the military and political sides. The book opens with the first landings in November, 1942, and the failure of the first bid for Tunis. It then traces the development of the small original landing force into a magnificent army, and moves in a crescendo towards the final pulverising attack. The author analyses the reasons for the Allied success and the lessons to be derived from it. He deals at length with the political situation: the plots and counterplots of French political parties; the appointment and assassination of Darlan; the problems of General Giraud's administration; the whole confused background of intrigue and conspiracy in Algiers. The author also discusses the problems of broadcasting from a theatre of war, and describes the special complications of the work of a radio reporter." Some tiny light foxing marks on endpapers, darkening and three scratch marks to top of text block, light browning to edges of text block, book is slightly cocked, small bump to top edge of boards, minor soiling, small light stain on spine. Dust jacket has soiling, large piece missing from top of spine and part of rear panel, several small edge chips and tears, small piece missing from middle of spine, light edge wrinkling, moderate edge wear on spine.
