But there was no peace. Wizenbeak stood accused of being a dangerous wizard, and the Witchfinders had him marked as their target. One army was sent against him and a larger one was on the way. The fighting may have finished but the real war has only just begun for Louise Brenier, a young woman searching for her brother lost in action at the battle. Louise enlists the help of James IV's right-hand man, Patrick Paniter, who is wracked with guilt at events leading up to the disastrous battle. Determined to find the truth herself, Louise sets off only swiftly to fall foul of the lawless clans ruling the wild borderland between Scotland and England. Five centuries after one of the most pivotal battles in British history, the story of those blood-soaked and ungovernable days is brought vividly to life in a tale rich in history, political intrigue, high adventure and romance." 191 Gossage, Carolyn. A QUESTION OF PRIVILEGE: CANADA'S INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS.
Toronto Peter Martin 1977 088778156X / 9780887781568 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
301 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w illustrations. "(T)he first comprehensive examination of the independent schools and their role in Canadian society. Based on extensive research in neglected historical records and on hundreds of interviews from coast to coast, it documents the evolution of fifty schools across the country, sketches some of the famous (and infamous) headmasters and mistresses, and reveals the often unconventional beginnings of these Establishment establishments. No dry academic history, (it) concentrates on the people and the colour behind the grey walls: the milkman who became a headmaster by soliciting students on his rounds; the seven Anglican sisters who financed their school by selling used clothing; the school that acquired its property, an opulent nineteenth-century mansion, at a cut-rate price from a bankrupt social climber. (This) is a delight for everyone interested in Canadian education and social history." Very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, two tiny corner creases. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, tiny tear at bottom of spine, two tiny scuffs at top of spine, a few tiny dents on front hinge.

193 Granatstein, J.L. CANADA 1957-1967: THE YEARS OF UNCERTAINTY AND INNOVATION. THE CANADIAN CENTENARY SERIES NO. 19.
Toronto McClelland & Stewart 1986 0771035152 / 9780771035159 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good Signed by Author
375 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs, political cartoons. Signed by author on title page. "In the tenth decade of Canada's confederation, the expansive and unifying post-war boom gave way to rapid change and conflicting choices. These were the years of John Diefenbaker and Lester Pearson, years when Canada's culture, economy, and politics took new directions and the foundations of today's political and social realities were laid. Beginning with a survey of the country in 1957, poised to grasp Diefenbaker's grand 'Vision', the author vividly describes how the Progressive Conservative promise won the nation - and later could not be fulfilled. In these critical years Canada joined NORAD and scrapped the Avro Arrow jet fighter; the Diefenbaker Cabinet tore itself apart over the nuclear arms question. At the same time, the economic crisis of the early sixties gave the Liberals a much-needed political weapon as the government faced soaring budget deficits, a declining dollar, and a severe recession. Politics mirrored public feelings in the mid-1960s as governments federal and provincial addressed new kinds of problems. Unification of the armed forces, medicare, and bilingualism in the public services, especially in the context of the growing political and cultural ferment in Quebec, proved divisive as well as innovative." Minor wrinkle at bottom of spine. Dust jackat has very small tear and creases at top of spine - archivally taped, some very light edge wear/wrinkling with one tiny tear archivally taped.

"The Regiment (repelled many offensives) in its early life - particularly at Minorca in 1756, Salamanca, Waterloo, Inkerman, Sebastopol and Spion Kop in the South African War. It was one of the few British regiments to make the desert march across Abyssinia for the attack on Magdala, and also fought in the Zulu War. Wherever the fighting was most deadly and the odds against victory most daunting, it is safe to assume that the King's Own were there. The Regiment boasted twenty battle-honours when the Great War broke out, and in those dreadful four years of slaughter it was to add a further 59 - Le Cateau, Retreat from Mons, Marne 1 9 1 4 , A i s n e 1914, Festubert 1915, Loos, Passchendaele, Macedonia 1915-18, Suvla, Tigris 1916, Baghdad; these are just a few of them. In the Second World War the King's Own waited patiently for the ships at Dunkirk; fought in Syria, North Afr ic a an d I ta ly ; sw eated out the siege of Malta; penetrated hundreds of miles behind the Japanese lines as Chindits. All these actions, and more, are described in this vivid and action-packed story." Previous owner's small stamp on each of fro nt en dpa pe rs , t iny b ump to bottom of spine.
