LEARNING NOT TO BE FIRST: THE LIFE OF CHRISTINA ROSSETTI., Jones, Kathleen. (Christina Rossetti>)
181 Jones, Kathleen. (Christina Rossetti>) LEARNING NOT TO BE FIRST: THE LIFE OF CHRISTINA ROSSETTI.
New York St. Martin's Press 1992 0312070179 / 9780312070175 First American Edition Good Very Good
252 pp., 8vo (8 1/2" H). B&w photographs, reproductions. "(E)xamines Christina Rossetti's life alongside those of of other nineteenth-century women writers - notably Emily Bronte, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, and Emily Dickinson. (She) was the youngest of four children, born in England to Italian parents. Although she and her brother, Dante Gabriel, were known as the 'two storms', Christina's passionate nature was curbed in a way that her brother's was not, as she submitted to the social and religious pressures that lay so heavily on Victorian women. Like E.B.B., Christina suffered the tyranny of a loving family. Her sister Maria's influence was described as 'a species of police surveillance', and Christina was always careful never to write anything that would hurt her mother. As her personal life became increasingly tragic, her output of religious poetry grew. Her desire for both poetic and moral excellence kept her continually in conflict, a struggle whose corrosive effects deeply affected her writing. (Her) deliberate self-effacement, Dante Gabriel's portrayal of her as the meek virgin, and William Rossetti's role as editor and interpreter of her work have gradually blotted out the passionate, lively spirit who wrote with such simplicity and power. (The author's) fascinating work finally strips away the shadows of Christina's life to reveal her true self." Varying levels of sun fading to spine, top/bottom edges & top 1 1/2" of rear board; tiny printers ink mark in margin of pages 4 & 5. Dust jacket has very light edge wear - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.

REMEMBER WITH ADVANTAGES: A HISTORY OF THE TENTH, ELEVENTH AND ROYAL HUSSARS, 1945-1992., Keown-Boyd, Henry.
189 Keown-Boyd, Henry. REMEMBER WITH ADVANTAGES: A HISTORY OF THE TENTH, ELEVENTH AND ROYAL HUSSARS, 1945-1992.
Leo Cooper, London, (1994), first edition.
296 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photos, maps, color plates. "The 10th Royal Hussars (PWO) and the 11th Hussars (PAO) were both raised in 1715 as regiments of Light Dragoons to deal with troubles north of the Scottish border. Both went on to win huge acclaim until, and indeed after, their amalgamation in 1969 as The Royal Hussars (PWO). Now they have had to face up to yet another amalgamation to form with the 14th/20th Hussars, The King's Royal Hussars. This book, written by a former officer of the 11th Hussars (PAO), traces the history of the two regiments from 1945 until the first amalgamation and then details the sadly short-lived history of The Royal Hussars (PWO) up to the time of the second amalgamation in 1992. Depressing as all that may sound, Henry Keown-Boyd shows that, in spite of all, the regimental spirit, the traditional loyalties, the time-honoured customs and the determination to succeed, survive and flourish. Both regiments have had numerous periods of active service since the Second World War and in this book descriptions of duties in Malaya, Arabia and Northern Ireland, among others, are much enhanced by recollections of those who took part . All of the four original regiments now brought together have their roots deeply planted in the history of the British Army and none are likely to dispute the fact that the new King's Royal Hussars will add further laurels to the wreath. Certainly, this is a most worthy tribute to one half of the newly formed regiment." Very faint cigarette odor, bump to top of rear hinge/spine. Dust jacket has light rubbing, creasing at top of spine. VG/VG

BE NOT FAR FROM ME: THE OLDEST LOVE STORY. LEGENDS FROM THE BIBLE., Kimmel, Eric A.
191 Kimmel, Eric A. BE NOT FAR FROM ME: THE OLDEST LOVE STORY. LEGENDS FROM THE BIBLE.
New York Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers 1998 0689810881 / 9780689810886 First Edition Near Fine Near Fine David Diaz
256 pp, 11" H. Colour illustrations. "This collection of stories reveals the tumultuous relationship between people and God that started four thousand years ago and continues to this day. It begins with Abraham - who was the first to believe in one God and therefore the first to receive His blessing - and spans over 1,500 years as it explores the lives of his descendants. We meet warriors who dole out God's justice, kings anointed by God, and prophets who preach God's word. We see awesome miracles made by God's hand and incredible accomplishments made in God's name. Master storyteller Eric Kimmel draws upon the Bible and the Midrash to create vivid portrayals of favorite heroes like David, Samson, Deborah, and Elijah and of lesser-known ones like Miriam, Hosea, Jeremiah, and Ezekiel. Their human frailties make the tales enduring and timeless, and Kimmel's modern language makes them accessible and riveting. More than just a collection of Bible stories, (this) is a though-provoking epic that brings past, present, and future together in the ongoing love story between God and humanity." Very tiny bump at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has very minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine.

THE DUCHESS OF WINDSOR: THE UNCOMMON LIFE OF WALLIS SIMPSON., King, Greg.
192 King, Greg. THE DUCHESS OF WINDSOR: THE UNCOMMON LIFE OF WALLIS SIMPSON.
New York Citadel / Kensington 2003 0806524642 / 9780806524641 Very Good
556 pp, 9" H. "It was the love story of the century - the king and the commoner. In December 1936, King Edward VIII abdicated the throne to marry ' the woman I love,' Wallis Warfield Simpson, a twice-divorced American who quickly became one of the twentieth century's most famous personalities, a figure of intrigue and mystery, both admired and reviled. Wrongly blamed for the abdication crisis, Wallis suffered hostility from the Royal Family and much of the world. Yet interest in her story has remained constant, resulting in a small library of biographies that convey a thinly veiled animosity toward their subject. The truth, however, is infinitely more fascinating than the shallow, pathetic portrait that has often been painted. Using previously untapped sources, (the author) presents a complete and, for the first time, sympathetic portrait of the Duchess that sifts the decades of rumor and accusation to reveal the woman behind the legend. From her birth in Pennsylvania during the Gilded Age to her death in Paris in 1986, King takes the reader through a world of privilege, palaces, high society, and love with the accompaniment of hatreds, feuds, conspiracies, and lies. The cast of characters is vast: politicians and presidents, dictators and socialites. Twenty-four pages of (b&w) photographs reveal the life of the Duchess in all its incomparable glamour and romance." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - three light creases down a concave spine.

219 pp + glossary, selected bibliography& acknowledgements, 10" H. B&w map, colour photographs. "For forty days and forty nights during the winter of 1999, three Canadians along with three Omani Bedu, travelled by camel across Arabia's great southern desert - the legendary Empty Quarter. Journeying from Salala in Oman on the Arabian Sea, they headed north and east for 1,200 kilometres across remote and largely unexplored desert wilderness, where ranges of sand dunes tower to over three hundred metres in height. When they finally reached Abu Dhabi on the Persian Gulf, they were received as heroes. Theirs was the first camel crossing of the Empty Quarter in over fifty years. During the desert crossing the team was determined to travel and live as authentically as possible, on camels, taking Arabic names and wearing traditional clothing, drinking their water from rank goatskins and eating mainly unleavened bread and dried camel meat. The cultural insights they were afforded are constantly fascinating - but so are the cultural clashes, since the party was often followed by Land Cruisers full of well-meaning supporters who threatened to destroy the spirit of the journey. Now Bruce Kirkby has written a thoughtful and deeply felt account of this challenging expedition - and has illustrated it with twenty-four pages of his stunning colour photographs." Very slight small bump on fore-edge of rear board, very slight lean to spine, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor edge wear, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, minor rubbing.

SKY GODS: THE SUN AND MOON IN ART AND MYTH., Komaroff, Katherine.
195 Komaroff, Katherine. SKY GODS: THE SUN AND MOON IN ART AND MYTH.
New York Universe Books 1974 0876631871 / 9780876631874 First Edition Very Good - Very Good-
86 pp, 11 5/8" H. B&w and colour illustrations. "Ever since the beginning of time, man has wondered about the meaning and behavior of the sun and moon. He has carefully observed their cycles and realized their importance for his own survival. The close contact with nature that ancient man enjoyed made him more conscious of their presence, whether he lived in a place constantly warmed by the sun or in a bitter cold world where the sun seemed far away. Ancient men tried to explain the meaning of this mysterious phenomenon in stories closely related to their own lives and religious beliefs. The Hindu people of India thought that the sun was a red man with four arms in a golden chariot. For the Egyptians, the sun was a great watchful eye. The North American Indians said that the moon was a great ball of light tossed into the sky by a clever creature called Raven. The Eskimos believed that the moon was a powerful hunter who often stood in front of his igloo. These stories, called myths, are handed down from generation to generation, and celebrate the great mystery of life. They are loved because of their beauty and power and also for what they tell us about people of other cultures. In 'Sky Gods', myths from India, Egypt, Africa, Japan, China, the Eskimos, and the Indians of North and South America are lucidly retold and illustrated with stunning photographs of art and artifacts from the various cultures. There is a common message behind all these stories. Although the masks, paintings, statues, and other works of art also vary - some are relatively simple, others are highly sophisticated - yet they all contain clues to a deeper understanding of the beauty and mysteriousness of the universe." Two large diagonal creases on free rear endpaper, light stain along bottom edge of rear board, very small light stain on top edge of front board, one soft corner crease. Dust jacket has been price-clipped, has light to moderate edge wear - mainly at top/bottom of spine, light rubbing and two light scuff lines on rear panel, small stain at inside bottom edge of rear panel, one small edge tear.

First four books of the 'Bardic Voices' series, 6 3/4" H. 1. The Lark and the Wren - 488 pp, 1992, ISBN 0671720996. "With the proper schooling young Rune would be one of the greatest bards her world has ever seen. Even if only she knows it. Unfortunately, the daughter of a tavern wench at the Hungry Bear, no matter how talented, doesn't get much in the way of formal training. One night, to back up a brag she probably wouldn't have made if she weren't so mad, she went up to play her fiddle for the Ghost of Skull Hill. Everyone knows that no one who has ever gone up Skull Hill at night has come down again. Not alive, anway. But when the ghost appears Rune strikes a bargain: if the ghost tires of her playing before morning her life is his; if he is still listening when the sun glints over yonder hill she will have earned both life and a sack of silver. Let the music begin - ." 2. The Robin and the Kestrel - 373 pp, 1994, ISBN 0671876287. "After the affairs recounted in (Book I), Robin, a gypsy lass and bard, and Kestrel, semi-fugitive heir to a throne he does not want, have married their fortunes together and travel the open road, seeking their happiness where they may find it. This is their story. But it is also the story of the Ghost of Skull Hill, the very ghost who gave Rune a bag of silver and her start in life rather than her death when she played the night away. Together, the Robin, the Kestrel, and the Ghost will foil a plot to drive all music from the land - but first, the Robin and the Kestrel must tame the killer Ghost." 2.5. A Cast of Corbies (Bardic Choices) - 311 pp, 1994, ISBN 0671722077. "A strange pall has settled over Alanda. Everywhere representatives of the Church seek to ferret out unauthorized magic - and music, because it is magic at its roots, has come under suspicion. And that which is suspect, if it cannot be crushed altogether, must be stripped of its mystery, made tame and answerable to the power of the priests. Throughout the lands the Free Bards, those who will not or cannot join the priest-condoned Guild, are being driven away. But all who are Free are free to choose: to flee or to fight." 3. The Eagle & the Nightingales - 410 pp, 1996, ISBN 0671877062. "Why is the High King of the Human kingdoms not doing his job - and thereby allowing the Church to fill the power vacuum in the human lands of Alanda? This is a matter of some concern to Nightingale and her friends: the Church is becoming ever more overtly hostile to non-human sentients (of which there are several species in Alanda) as well as to anything that it does not at least indirectly control, such as gypsies and Free Bards. To discover just what is going on, she will join forces with T'fyrr, a birdman with the visage of a raptor and the voice of an angelic choir. And before the King - and through him the gypsies, Free Bards and non-humans of the twenty kingdoms - is saved they, the Eagle and the Nightingale, will have become if not quite lovers, then far more than friends - ." 199 Laffin, John. ON THE WESTERN FRONT: SOLDIERS' STORIES FROM FRANCE AND FLANDERS, 1914-1918.
Alan Sutton, (Gloucester), 1985, Ist edition.
277 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0862992427 B&w photos, maps, cartoons. "...at its lowest level the history of the 'Great War' is made up of millions of trivial incidents, for something happened each day to each man - somet hing that made him laugh or cry or sigh...And he told stories - about the things that happened to him. Those stories reveal, collectively, much about the 'real' war. Most were for consumption within the army so they were heard only by th e m e n i n t he trenches, behind the lines, at base hospitals and at the estaminets and billets during rest periods. The anecdotes which make up this collection (some taken from letters, diaries, published and unpublished books) are, John Laffi n b el ie ve s , th e f irst serious attempt to show the humanity of the soldier on the Western Front. They reflect the conditions, attitudes and practices of 1914-18, revealing the soldiers' war from first shot to last..." Chancellor, London, 2000, reprint.
194 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0753703629 B&w photographs, reproductions. "During the Second World War a number of daring military actions were carried out by Allied and Axis land, sea and air forces against targets carefully selected for their strategic or propaganda values. These raids were as individual in character as the men who carried them out and equally unique in their objectives. (The author) relates more than twenty such operations mounted b y B r i t ish, German, American, Australian, Italian and Canadian forces. Raiding appealed to British military men's psyche - and on the whole, they were good at it. Therefore, 'Raiders' emphasizes attacks mounted by the British because they we re i n vo lv ed i n more theatres of war than any other combatant. (Laffin) examines the qualities of successful raiders, as well as their selection and training, before looking in detail at individual missions. The exploits recorded here range fro m a B rit ish co mma ndo strike against Rommel's supposed HQ in the North African desert in 1941, to the daring surveys of the Normandy beaches in preparation for Operation 'Overlord'; from the German glider-borne assault on the great Belgian fort ress of Ebe n Em ael in 1 940, to SS Colonel Otto Skorzeny's dramatic mission to snatch Mussolini from imprisonment on an Italian mountaintop in 1943. Here are the Gironde river exploit of the Special Boat Service in 1942 when frogmen comman dos c aused ser ious damag e to four large enemy ships, and Operation 'Jericho' in 1944 when a low-level attack by RAF Mosquito bombers blasted a huge hole in the wall of a Gestapo prison in France."
