182 Harrer, Heinrich. Message from the Dalai Lama. Introduction by Galen Rowell. LOST LHASA: HEINRICH HARRER'S TIBET.
New York Harry N. Abrams 1992 0810935600 / 9780810935600 Very Good+ Good Heinrich Harrer, photographs.
223 pp, 11 1/4" H. Map endpapers. "Austrian mountaineer Heinrich Harrer had been in Tibet for seven years when his time in Lhasa came to a swift end. As he fled (from the 1950 Chinese invasion), he brought with him negatives of the pictures he had been taking with left-behind film and borrowed cameras, pictures documenting life in Lhasa, candid images of the people who had made him almost one of their own. His 'Seven Years in Tibet', which has sold three million copies since its publication in 1953, is illustrated with only a few of these photographs. (This book) presents 200 of Harrer's extraordinary images, capturing the luminous, exotic world of Tibet before the invasion. With an intimacy and understanding that only he could impart, the photographs give us a last glimpse of life in and around Lhasa, Tibet's capital city and the locus to which all Tibet gravitated. Arranged thematically and energized by Harrer's detail-rich commentary, these pages are a powerful and moving resurrection of life in Lhasa - from Buddhist ceremonies to family celebrations, from outings in the countryside to men's and women's games of chance, from spirited athletic contests to the sad flight of Harrer's avid pupil, the eighteen-year-old Dalai Lama." Small shalloe dent on fron board. Dust jacket has rubbing on panels (no colour loss), slight colour fading at top of front panel near hinge, heavy colour fading on spine from red to light blue, light fading to colour on hinges, small dent on front panel, minor edge wrinkling.

HITLER & GELI., Hayman, Ronald.
188 Hayman, Ronald. HITLER & GELI.
London Bloomsbury 1997 0747527237 / 9780747527237 First Edition Very Good Very Good
240 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). B&w photographs, family tree. "Few people know about the affair Adolf Hitler had with his niece, Geli Raubal. It started in 1927, when he was thirty-eight and she was nineteen. Already leader of the National Socialist German Workers' Party, he had been imprisoned after the unsuccessful putsch of 1923, released at the end of 1924 and had been banned from speaking in public. It was then that he decided to rent a house in Obersaltzberg, an small alpine village close to the Austrian border. Geli came to live with him there, together with her mother, Angela Raubal, his widowed half-sister, but the ban was lifted before the Raubals moved in. Hitler could relax with his niece as he never had before with anyone else, and enjoyed her constant availability. He adored her and they could talk to each other uninhibitedly. The couple shared a strangely intense, passionate relationship, but it was always dogged by Hitler's intolerance, his chauvinistic attitude to womanhood and his possessive jealousy. Later, the weakening of the bond between (them) coincided with the phenomenal rise in the popularity of the Nazis. In 1931, aged twenty-three, Geli Raubal was found dead in the Munich flat she shared with Hitler, his revolver on the floor and an unfinished letter on the table. Hitler was shattered by his niece's death, and for the rest of his life couldn't speak of her without becoming emotional. (This book) examines the degeneracy in the family Hitler and Geli came from and the emotional and sexual problems Hitler suffered, thus giving the reader an opportunity to take new bearings on Hitler as a man." Light browning to pages and edges of text block, slight bump at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has some areas of light edge wrinkling.

New York W.W. Norton 2013 0393239713 / 9780393239713 First American Edition Very Good Very Good
278 pp, 9 1/2" H. "In the first half of the nineteenth century, an epidemic swept Europe: arsenic poisoning. Available at any corner shop for a few pence, arsenic was so frequently used by potential beneficiaries of wills that it was nicknamed 'the inheritor's powder'. But it was difficult to prove that a victim had been poisoned, let alone to identify the contaminated food or drink since arsenic was tasteless. Then came a riveting case. (When, after three days of agony) wealthy George Bodle died, (he left) behind several heirs, including a son and grandson - both of whom were not on the best of terms with the family patriarch. The investigation brought together a colorful cast of characters: bickering relatives; a drunken, bumbling policeman; and James Marsh, an unknown but brilliant chemist who, assigned the Bodle case, attempted to create a test that could accurately pinpoint the presence of arsenic. In doing so, however, he would cause as many problems as he solved. Were innocent men and women now going to the gallows? And would George Bodle's killer be found? Incisive and wryly entertaining, science writer Sandra Hempel brings to life a gripping story of domestic infighting, wayward police behavior, a slice of Victorian history, stories of poisonings, and an unforgettable foray into the origins of forensic science." Light wrinkling at bottom of spine, small bump at top of rear hinge. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at bottom of spine, very small bump at top of rear hinge.

195 Her Royal Highness Princess Christian of Schleswig Holstein, translator & editor. (Frederica Sophie Wilhelmine of Brandenburg-Baireuth.) MEMOIRS OF WILHELMINE, MARGRAVINE OF BAIREUTH.
London David Stott 1887 Good- Inscribed by editor.
458 pp + (1) pp publisher's advertising, 9" H. Tissue-covered sepiatone frontispiece. Inscribed on half title page: "For dearest Louisechen / from her devoted Sister / Helena (underlined with a flourish) / July. 1887. (underlined)". Helena Augusta Victoria was Queen Victoria's 5th child and married Prince Christian of Schleswig-Holstein, becoming Princess Christian. The British Royal family were fond of German diminutives and the 'Louisechen' of the inscription could have been her younger sister, Louise Caroline Alberta, or her Prussian sister-in-law, wife of Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught and Strathearn, who was referred to as 'Louisechen' in family papers. The Duke served as Governor General of Canada in 1911 and 'Duchess of Connaught' has been pencilled above 'Louisechen' at some time. An interesting association copy. Some small splits to paper on inside hinges, a few pages with soft wrinkling at top corner, scattered light foxing marks on preliminary pages and on two rear pages, book is lightly cocked, wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, light edge wear, small slight bump at board corners, age/dust darkening to edges of text block - especially to the top, rubbing and soiling to boards.

When the narrator, the 38 year-old son of a black father and a white mother living in Southern Ontario, loses his job, he goes to Baltimore and embarks on a quest for his family history. "Beginning with his own parents' struggle against segregation in Canada and moving back in time to the story of his great-great grandfather - a supposed hero in John Brown's famous anti-slavery raid on Harpers Ferry, Virginia - Langston discovers a long line of relatives in constant battle for their rights and dignity. (S)lips effortlessly from the slave trade of 19th-century Virginia to the modern, predominantly white suburbs of Oakville, Ontario - once a final stop on the Underground Railroad."
