THE YOUNG SURVEYOR., Knox, Olive.
181 Knox, Olive. THE YOUNG SURVEYOR.
Toronto Ryerson Press 1967 Reprint Hard Cover Very Good+ Good+
164 pp, 8vo (8 1/4" H). Map endpapers. "What boy or girl wouldn't like the adventure of surveying in the Rockies when pack-mules, gold miners, and railway surveyors followed trails known only to the Indians? Bruce, the greenhorn from San Francisco, and Josette, the French girl from Edmonton, and her half-brother Mike had that exciting experience when they accompanied Edward Jarvis on his Canadian Pacific Railway surveys in 1874-1875. During the summer the two boys endured the hardships and adventures of an exploratory survey from Kamloops to Tete Jaune Cache, then an instrumental survey along the North Fraser River to Fort George. A rock slide, plunge into a treacherous river, forest fire, cougar attack, snow avalanche and losing the trail are some of the dramatic events in this book for both boys and girls. That was the life of the first Canadian Pacific surveyors, who pioneered the trail-finding so that the Atlantic could be linked to the Pacific with steel." Minor soiling at top of front hinge. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling, several small closed tears with creases, a few tiny chips, light foxing at top of rear flap, a few tiny light foxing marks along top edge, light dye stain at top inside edge of rear panel, very light rubbing on rear panel.

These essays and interviews are augmented by additional pieces that discuss her work's literary and cultural value in relation to an emerging canon of Canadian literature. Toronto Dundurn 2008 155002793X / 9781550027938 First Edition Soft Cover Fine
248 pp, large 8vo (9" H). B&w photographs, reproductions, drawings. "Steamboats carrying passengers from Hamilton to Montreal via the rapids of the St. Lawrence were a popular sight in the latter half of the nineteenth century. In 1855, the 'Kingston', an iron steamboat built for John Hamilton, appeared on the Great Lakes. When the Prince of Wales (later Edward VII) toured British North America in 1860, the 'Kingston' became his floating palace for much of his time between Quebec and Toronto. While many steamboats claimed to be floating palaces, the 'Kingston' truly was one. The 'Kingston' was wrecked many times and survived spectacular fires in 1872 and 1873. Late in her career, she was converted into a salvage vessel and renamed the 'Cornwall'. In 1930 she was finally taken out and sunk near one of Kingston's ship graveyards. There she remained until diver Rick Neilson discovered her in 1989. Today, the once-palatial 'Kingston' is a popular dive site and tourist attraction." 193 Lloyd, Christopher. ST VINCENT & CAMPERDOWN. BRITISH BATTLE SERIES.
London B. T. Batsford 1963 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Very Good-
184 pp, large 8vo (9" H). B&w reproductions, maps/battle plans. "The year 1797 witnessed two of the greatest victories in British naval history: St. Vincent and Camperdown. These battles were of decisive importance in the war against revolutionary France since the defeat of the Spanish Fleet in February, and of the Dutch Fleet eight months later, effectively frustrated the French 'Grand Strategy' of invading Ireland and England. An attempt, inspired by the Irish patriot, Wolfe Tone, had been made at the end of the previous year to land a French force in Bantry Bay, but it was a blizzard, rather than the efforts of the English navy, which forced the enemy fleet to return to Brest. The British were lucky on that occasion. They were luckier still in the spring of 1797 when the naval mutinies at Spithead, Yarmouth and the Nore had none of the disastrous consequences which might so easily have followed. (This) account gains immeasurably because the engagements are seen in the strategic context of the war. The battles themselves are described with that understanding of the personalities of the commanders, and of the tactics of their fleets, which might be expected from a professor of the Royal Navy College, Greenwich. The British admirals and their captains bear names which will always be memorable in naval history: Jervis, Nelson, Troubridge, Collingwood, Saumarez, Duncan, the notorious Bligh. These men, and the parts which they played become living to the reader through eye-witness accounts, some of them previously unpublished." Very light browning to edges of text block, bump at top corner of boards - tiny bump at bottom corner, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, previous owner's name stamp on front pastedown. Dust jacket is peice clipped, has light edge wear/wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds

" 'It seems that our generation at Balliol is doomed', Patrick Shaw Stewart wrote to Lady Desborough from Gallipoli. 'If I live throug h this war I shall be almost without friends'. He was in fact the last to die of the close-knit, brilliantly clever and engagingly vivacious group that included Raymond Asquith, Julian and Billy Grenfell, Edward Horner, Charles Lister, Ego a n d Y v o Charteris. Children of the Souls, the bright collection of late Victorian aristocrats, these young men were brought up together at Eton and Oxford; with such friends as Winston Churchill, Edward Marsh, Duff Cooper, John Buchan, Diana Co op er an d Ru p ert Brooke, they were becoming part of the Edwardian elite, moving from one fashionable ball or country house party to the next, meeting politicians and poets and beginning careers in the City, in the law and public service. In thi s m ovi n g g ro up po rtrait, which is based on many unpublished letters, both to and about each other, Jeanne MacKenzie tells of a happy youth and blighted manhood which epitomises the epic tragedy of the twentieth century.
