H.M.C.S. Iroquois Veterans Association, Victoria, B.C., 1993, reprint.
256 pp, 4to (11" H), soft cover with cerlox binding. This is the reprint edition which was produced by photocopy with permission of the author. Unfortunately the photographs did not reproduce well. "Practically everyone knows of HMS Cossack's mag nificent exploit in a Norwegian fiord in February 1940 when her crew rescued 299 captive British merchant seamen from the Altmark. Cossack was just one of 27 Tribal Class destroyers which served in the Royal Navy and the Royal Australian an d C a n a d i an Navies from 1938 to 1969. They were considered by many to be the finest of their type. The Tribals probably saw more acion over a longer period of time, and over a greater area of the globe, than any other class of destroyer. Th ey to ok p ar t in almost every Home Fleet and Mediterranean action, the D-Day operations, the East Indies, the South-West Pacific amphibious landings, the Battle for Leyte Gulf, the surrender of Japan and the Korean War. Technical details are p rov i ded , t oge the r wit h lists of commanding officers and pennant numbers, and the ship's crests." Interior - clean with no previous ownership marks. THE AIRLINES OF THE WORLD., Brimson, Samuel.
182 Brimson, Samuel. THE AIRLINES OF THE WORLD.
Dreamweaver, Sydney, 1985.
256 pp, 4to (11 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 094982500X Profusely illustrated with b&w and colour photographs. "This is the story of commercial aviation - of the individual airlines which grew out of humble beginnings into the corpora te giants they are today. It is also the story of people. People such as Paterson, Six, Boeing, Fysh, Trippe, Hanshue, Plesman, Rickenbacker, Hughes, Frye and many other who pioneered commercial aviation and went on to found some of the gr e a t e s t a irlines in the world. The names of Boeing, Douglas, Lockhhed, Fokker, etc., are synonymous with flying today; but what of other pioneers, of companies which have ceased to exist or have gone out of aircraft building? Here the storie s of d eH av il l an d, Handley Page, Convair, Vickers, Stinson, Junkers, Airspeed, Avro, Bristol, Hawker Siddeley, as well as many smaller companies, are told in the context of the airlines that flew their products. With airline operations so con fu sed an d d epr ess ed to day, this book looks back on their illustrious histories - at the efforts of people who made them grow, at the attempts to halt that growth, at the transition from air travel in splendid comfort only for the wealthy to tod ay's 747 s, D C10s and L1 011s which pack in the low-fare-paying passengers like sardines. All in all, (this) is a fascinating chronicle of the world of commercial aviation from its very beginnings until the present." ISBN 087451374X "Here the story (of the Indian Mutiny) is seen through the eyes of a small group of young British lieutenants gong through t hat stirring set of battles. It is a study of the psychosociological tensions that affected these young people - a group of intelligent and able men who were only partially in control of their destinies, yet had the ambitions, the achieve m e n t m o t i v ation, possibly the group skills and personal innovation, to strive and struggle through the dramatic events they experienced. We will come to learn a good deal about these four men (and the mother of one of them) - to see their fr us tr at i on s, t he ir loneliness, their anomie, their failures. At the same time their enthusiasms, their successes, their hopes and dreams, come through constantly, giving a poignancy to their story that transcends the 'facts' themselves. Th e s tuf f o f thi s s tud y i s a n extensive series of letters from the lieutnants back to their families during the height of the hostilities....this book also draws on an intriguing new method of study whose name is content anlaysis. A parti cula r br anch of th is c onte nt a nlay sis field is explored here - the use of the computer to analyze the content of particular texts. All the letters....have been entered into a computer and treated to a sophisticated content anaysis program t hat c onsid ers t hem alo ng ni nety- seven sepa rate psychosociological paramters. The resulting glimpses further help to explain some of the critical differences hinted at in the texts themselves....This fresh view of historical method is elabo rated in dat a in t he A ppen dixes. 256 pp, 9" H. B&w photographs. "Examines the history of the Chemistry Department at the University of Toronto from its beginnings in 1843, when it was housed in simple quarters in the parliament buildings on Front St reet and had just one faculty member. During the founding era (1843-1920) three British gentlemen professors guided the department through four homes; between 1920 and 1960 three Canadian heads built a highly influential department. Since 1960 eight chairmen have effectively managed a growing and diverse department while it ventured into exciting new fields and emerging sub-disciplines. New faculty, new programs, new locations, and a Nobel Prize have been highlights of the past few decades. With the completion of recent renovations and additions (such as the Davenport Research Building and Garden), with its distinguished faculty, top-rate staff, and excellent students, and with its dazzling array of equipment to support research, the department's future indeed looks bright." 288 pp, oblong (8 3/4" H x 11 1/4" D). B&w photographs, reproductions. "One hundred and twenty-five years ago eight men met on December 1, 1868, to form the Toronto Astronomical Club. Among them were a tailor, a teacher and a cabinet-maker. How surprised these ordinary citizens would be to see that their little group has grown into an organization of over 3000 members in all parts of the country, in the United States and overseas. Twenty-two cities from St John's to Victoria have local chapters or 'Centres' of the RASC. Novices and naturalists, amateurs and professional scientists all play important roles in this remarkable success story. General readers will be surprised to find out what amateurs can learn from the sky, at meetings and through the Society's publications. Leaders of other volunteer organizations, educators looking for ways to promote greater appreciation of science, and local historians interested in the role of the Society in the life of their communities will find helpful ideas in this book. And members themselves will be better equipped to make decisions for the future through an appreciation of the development of the Society, its individual Centres and the men and women who have led them." THE IMPERIAL WAR MUSEUM BOOK OF 1918, YEAR OF VICTORY. PAN GRAND STRATEGY SERIES., Brown, Malcolm.
192 Brown, Malcolm. THE IMPERIAL WAR MUSEUM BOOK OF 1918, YEAR OF VICTORY. PAN GRAND STRATEGY SERIES.
Pan, London, 1999, 2nd printing.
392 pp, 7 3/4" H, soft cover. ISBN 0330376721 B&w plates. "1918 was probably the most dramatic and decisive year in British military history. In the spring there was a fear that Britain might have to evacuate her troops from the continent and lo se the war. In the summer came the great turnaround, and by autumn the German armies began to retreat. In November 1918 the First World War was over. This book tells the story of an amazing year through the authentic voice of the British s o l d i e r , a year in which, remarkably, the casualty rates were even higher than those of 1916 and 1917, the years of the Somme and Passchendaele." Pan, London, 1997.
380 pp, 7 3/4" H, soft cover. ISBN 0330352202 B&w plates, maps. "This book offers a remarkably fresh perspective on the bitterly fought 1916 campaign; it also describes the later battles of the Somme in the Great War's final year, 1918. Using hi therto unpublished evidence from the archieves of the Imperial War Museum, it tells its powerful and dramatic story through the letters and diaries of those who were there. (The author) has woven the many and varied accounts of well over a h u n d r e d participants - mainly British, but with not few Germans - into a rich tapestry of experience, so that the book reads less like a conventional history and more like a war novel. The characters come from almost every rank, from general t o or di na ry s o ldier, from a captain who could write, 'It's a marvellous war', or 'Hardship be damned! It's all one long blaze of glory', to a private whose attitude was, 'There is not much glory these days in dying for your country'." Interior - cl ean an d t igh t with no previous ownership marks. Both lauded the influence of the virtuous Christian woman, used the same female r ole models from the Bible, and saw the home as the locus of the construction of female piety.
