161 McFarlane, Brian. Inscribed. THE BRUINS. BRIAN MCFARLANE'S ORIGINAL SIX.
Toronto Stoddart 1999 077373189X / 9780773731899 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+ Inscribed By Author
238 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w photographs. Inscribed on half title page: "To D__ a longtime Bruins fan yours in hockey Brian Mcfarlane". "In 1924, Charles Adams of Brookline, Massachusetts, journeyed to Montreal to see the Stanley Cup finals and fell in love with the game. When two new NHL franchises became available that same year, Adams snapped one up for $15,000 and set up shop in Boston. The new team was dubbed the Boston Bruins. The Bruins have been one of the most intimidating and most successful NHL teams ever since. They won their first Stanley Cup in 1928, four short years after their initial game, and have since won another four Cups. Dozens of Hall of Famers and fan favorites have donned the brown, black, and gold, legends like Eddie Shore, Fern Flaman, Dit Clapper, Milt Schmidt, Phil Esposito, Brad Park, Derek Sanderson, Ray Bourque, and the incomparable Bobby Orr. From the lunch bucket teams of the World War I era to Don Cherry's Big Bad Bruins of the 1970s, to the recent Bruin resurgence under Pat Burns and his stable of young stars, the Bruins have endured as one of the more popular of the Original Six teams, and one of the most successful hockey franchises of all time." Minor wrinkling at bottom of spine; previous owner's small Christmas notation and signature in ink on half-title page. Dust jacket has minor rubbing and minor edge wrinkling.

142 pp, 8 3/4" H. Illustration section on thick yellow stock. "(In the 1930s) skeptical historians began 'investigating' the account of the young Queenston housewife who undertook to walk twenty miles through the woods to warn a British officer of an impending American attack. WILLIAM WYE SMITH: RECOLLECTIONS OF A NINETEENTH CENTURY SCOTTISH CANADIAN., McLean, Scott A. and Vance, Michael E., editors. (William Wye Smith)
165 McLean, Scott A. and Vance, Michael E., editors. (William Wye Smith) WILLIAM WYE SMITH: RECOLLECTIONS OF A NINETEENTH CENTURY SCOTTISH CANADIAN.
Toronto Natural Heritage 2008 1550028049 / 9781550028041 First Edition Soft Cover Near Fine
421 pp, large 8vo (9" H). B&w illustrations. "Many nineteenth-century writers highlighted the difficulties recent immigrants faced - the clearing of forest and the breaking of new ground, the isolation and long Canadian winters - and emphasized what they perceived as the negative, alienating influences of Ontario's rapid urban and industrial expansion. In turn, however, they celebrated the progress demon-strated in the pioneers' domination over nature, the establishment of thriving communities, and the extension of transportation networks. William Wye Smith, a popular nineteenth-century Upper Canadian poet, was no exception. Smith prepared his 'Canadian Reminiscences', a handwritten compilation of anecdotes that relate to his experiences as journalist, clergyman, and son of Scottish settlers, to provide his own unique perspective of pioneer life. This fully annotated version of his unpublished manuscript highlights Smith's unwitting testimony to the social life of the province, his relationship to the construction and maintenance of Scottish and Canadian identity, and his position in literary history." Inside - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - tiny soft corner crease.

THE HISTORY OF CANADA., McNaught, Kenneth.
167 McNaught, Kenneth. THE HISTORY OF CANADA.
New York Praeger 1970 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
336 pp, 8 3/4" H. B&w maps. "The history of Canada is the story of an ever expanding frontier and of the attempt to create a new nation in the face of enormous physical and human obstacles. (The author) follows this development from the very first probings of the tiny bands of explorers, missionaries, and 'coureurs de bois' that opened up 'New France'. He examines the great military struggles for control of the continent in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, which played such a vital part in laying down the present political and racial divisions. (Later) Canadians faced the enormous problems of welding scattered communities into provinces and provinces into a self-governing federation. The political task of nation-building was itself closely bound up with the building of the railways and the exploitation of the country's vast resources. Professor McNaught analyzes these great economic and social changes, as well as the part Canada played in two world wars and the process by which the Dominion evolved a new role in international affairs and new relationships with both Britain and the United States. (Concludes) with a survey of postwar Canada, which emphasizes that the expansion of the human frontier and the problems of unity and nationhood remain part of the Canadian question." Two very tiny stains on the half-title page, very small soft bump at top corner of middle third of pages, faint scuff on top of text block, very light wrinkling at top of spine, minor edge wear. Dust jacket is price-clipped, has very light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.

THE DEATH OF GLORY: THE WESTERN FRONT 1915., Neillands, Robin.
180 Neillands, Robin. THE DEATH OF GLORY: THE WESTERN FRONT 1915.
London John Murray 2006 0719562449 / 9780719562440 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good+
298 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). B&w photographs, maps. "The First World War remains a controversial subject: the bitter reality clouded with damaging and popular myths. Many of these misconceptions relate to the competence of the generals, the events of 1915 and the battles of Neuve Chapelle, Aubers Ridge and Festubert, as well as the larger disasters at Second Ypres - scene of the first gas attack - and, finally, the shambolic Battle of Loos. However, the reality of these battles has been gradually concealed by the allegtion that the men were 'lions led by donkeys', with much of the blame put on the generals. In this well-researched and highly readable book, Robin Neillands reveals the truth behind this fallacy and the events surrounding the battles, and sets them in a wider context. By the start of 1915, a tough year for the British in France, the British Army had only been in action for four months and the burden was shifting to the Territorial Forces - enthusiastic amateurs at best at this time. The battles were either disasters or inconclusive, but the real reason for despair was that this war, entered into for the liberation of Belgium, had lost its moral argument and was now just another bloody, senseless slaughter." Slight cigarette odor, light wrinkling at top of spine, slight browning to edges of text block. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.
