London New English Library 1981 0450048802 / 9780450048807 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Very Good-
382 pp, 8 3/4" H. "The Black Monk of Pontefract began disturbing the Pritchard family in 1966. Bangings in the night, objects flying across rooms, and a mysterious black-robed figure, whose appearances became more and more frequent. The police, the local MP and the vicar were all witness to the extraordinary happenings which continued to plague the household, and all attempts to exorcise the presence were met with mockery. In this definitive work (Colin Wilson) examines the recorded evidence of this and other famous poltergeists. Cases of hauntings have been recorded since ancient Greece and Rome. Poltergeist means 'banging ghost', because of their habit of making loud noises and throwing objects around. This book is not about Black Magic. But it is about the strange forces that surround us, and of which most of us are totally unaware. These forces may make us feel uncomfortable and may even terrify us, but there is not point in closing our eyes to them." Chapter headings: Professor Lombroso Investigates; Possession is Nine Points in the Law; Cases Ancient and Modern; The Black Monk of Pontefract; Fairies, Elementals and Dead Monks; The Black Magic Connection; Ghost Hunters and Ghost Seers; Speculations and Conclusions. A few very tiny light stains on title page, a 1"x3/4" area of surface paper loss at top corner of front pastedown - paper is glued to top corner of free front endpaper, small bump/wrinkle at bottom edge of pages 300 to 328, very small remainder mark on bottom of text block - migrates into bottom edge of some pages, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, one tiny corner bump, very minor foxing on top of text block. A Toronto security firm hires Be nnett to catch two thugs who have been bashing the night watchmen at a construction site they're supposed to be protecting. With the help of Sam, his trained German shepherd, he brings in the culprits without much trouble. But the one-nig h t s t a n d turns into a two-week ordeal when Bennett agrees to stay on and find out who is behind the beatings. Between a Mafia loan shark's hired bullies, a bunch of diminutive but deadly martial-arts experts, old enemies of the Toronto polic e fo r ce , an d a s tunning Chinese woman who reminds him too much of bad days in Vietnam, Bennett finds himself overmatched and confused - and begins to suspect that he is as much the hunted as he is the hunter. Great action scenes, a varied and vi vid s et of ch ar ac te rs, and a satisfyingly complex plot make this Wood's best yet." Minor edge wear on boards. Dust jacket is clipped, has minor rubbing. 312 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w and colour illustrations. "Murder - a dark, shameful deed, the last resort of the desperate or a vile tool of the greedy. And a very strange obsession. But where did this fixation develop? And what does it tell us about ourselves? (The author) explores this phenomenon in forensic detail, revisiting notorious crimes like the Ratcliff Highway Murders, which caused a nationwide panic in the early nineteenth century, and the case of Frederick and Maria Manning, the suburban couple who were hanged after killing Maria's lover and burying him under their kitchen floor. Our fascination with crimes like these became a form of entertainment, inspiring novels and plays, prose and paintings, poetry and true-crime journalism. At a point during the birth of the modern era, murder entered the popular psyche, and it's been a part of us ever since. (This) is a unique exploration of the art of crime - and a riveting investigation into the English criminal soul - by one of our finest historians." 421 pp, 9 1/4" H. One of 'The Canadian Centenary Series'. B&w photographs, maps. "In the concluding volume of his study of the Canadian North since Confederation, Morris Zaslow details with encyclopedic scope the accelerating change typical of the second half of that era. In this period the frontiers of agriculture and industry swept northward from near the international border to their economic limits. In the search for oil and natural gas, these limits were also close to the country's physical limits. Assisted by new roads, extended railways, improved river transportation, and the new airplane, settlers, prospectors, and developers cleared land, sought mineral treasures, opened enterprises, and established permanent settlements in areas formerly given over to hunting and trapping by the native peoples. At the same time, the institutions of society and government familiar to southern Canada followed at a more measured pace." Minor wrinkling at top of spine, small bump at bottom corner of both boards. Dust jacket has small light stain on front panel, wrinkling at bottom of flap-folds with old tape on inside surface - very light edge wrinkling elsewhere.

339 pp, 9 1/4" H. One of 'The Canadian Centenary Series'. B&w photographs, maps. "(T)races Canada's northward expansion in the years after Confederation. In the forefront of the movement were the fur-traders, missionaries, and gold-seekers. Behind them came provincial and federal overnments, concerned for their authority, and anxious to develop the riches of the North. Under the Laurier government (1896-1911) the advance quickened, and the roles of the Geological Survey, North-West Mounted Police, and Departments of the Interior, Indian Affairs, and Marine and Fisheries, gained new importance. A country which, by Confederation, had barely extended beyond the Gulf of St. Lawrence and St Lawrence Lowlands region, ahd by 1914 occupied the prairies. Aided by new transcontinental railways, its people had begun moving into the forest of the Middle North along a front that extended from lake St John to Dawson, and the Arctic frontier beyond recieved increasing attention. But the governments failed in their treatment of the native population, and in their eagerness to foster development they allowed resources to be exploited blindly, for and by foreign interest in the main." Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling, light rubbing and small light scratch on front panel, minor soiling, a few small and tiny edge tears - archivally taped, slight browning to spine and flap-folds.
