COCO: THE LIFE AND LOVES OF GABRIELLE CHANEL., Kennett, Frances.
162 Kennett, Frances. COCO: THE LIFE AND LOVES OF GABRIELLE CHANEL.
London Victor Gollancz 1989 0575045957 / 9780575045958 First Edition Very Good Very Good- Natacha Ledwidge.
160 pp, 4to (11 1/4" H). B&w photographs, b&w and colour illustrations. " 'Coco' Chanel changed the way women dressed, brought them a new chic, and liberated them forever. But she paid a tremendous price for her domination of the fashion scene, a reign that lasted six decades. She was driven by her ambition to build an international empire and become a millionairess. Happiness, however, eluded her. The luck that attended her professional career was absent from her private life. The great love of her life died in a car crash. She was wooed by an English Duke, a Russian Prince and by one of the greatest French poets of the age. The man she finally sought to marry dropped dead in front of her. She outlived nearly all her lovers and died alone, feeling a failure. This handsome new biography, lavishly illustrated with specially commissioned paintings and with photographs, tells of her extraordinary life, her tragedies and triumphs, and explains her unique appeal both as a woman and as a great designer." Very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, slight fading at edges of boards. Dust jacket has wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, light to moderate general rubbing and rub/indent lines - no colour loss, small edge tear with creases - archivally taped, small area of surface paper loss at bottom inside of rear flap-fold.

Hopwood, Fred Cogswell, Munro Beattie, Gordon Roper, Elizabeth Waterston, Edith Fowke, Frank W. Watt, Michael Tait, et al. LITERARY HISTORY OF CANADA: CANADIAN LITERATURE IN ENGLISH.
Toronto University of Toronto Press 1973 0802051472 / 9780802051479 Reprinted with Corrections Near Fine Very Good
945 pp, 9 1/2" H. "This major effort of a large group of scholars working in the field of Canadian literature provides a comprehensive, up-to-date reference work on the English literary history of Canada. It will be invaluable as a source of information on authors, genres, and literary trends and influences. It is also a fascinating account, lively and well written, of the ways in which writers have over the centuries striven to record reactions to a powerful natural environment and to their society against the background of other literary traditions in English. This volume represents a positive attempt to give a history of Canada in terms of writings which deserve attention because of significant thought, form, and use of language; it also aims to contribute to criticism by offering reasons for singling out those works regarded as the best." Very minor edge wear to boards. Dust jacket is price-clipped, has light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, slight fading to spine color, light rubbing on spine.

THE LEGION MARCHES: THE WOES AND WRONGS OF THE FOREIGN LEGION., Klose, Fritz, Ex-Legionary. Translated by Claud W. Sykes.
167 Klose, Fritz, Ex-Legionary. Translated by Claud W. Sykes. THE LEGION MARCHES: THE WOES AND WRONGS OF THE FOREIGN LEGION.
London John Hamilton Good-
287 pp, 8 3/4" H. No date, but 1935 has been pencilled on the title page under the translator's name. Red cloth with gilt lettering on spine and front board. 20 b&w plates (29 b&w photographs) - collated. "On every possible occasion France boasts of being a loving mother to her adopted children - whom she has rescued from hunger and misery to lead along the paths of glory and fame. Court-martials, brutal treatment, heavy sentences for trifling offences, callous doctors, and unspeakable sanitary conditons, all combine to tell a different tale. 'Marche ou creve!' Give your last ounce of strength or break down! 'Honneur, valeur et discipline!' are also embroidered in gold and silver letters on the Legion's banners - at least on those of the original regiments. The word 'discipline' has now acquired such a notorious significance in the Legion that on the standards of newly-formed regiments it is replaced by 'fidelite'. But when the Legion goes on active service the old principle of 'marche ou creve' still holds good. The following chapters will prove the truth of my assertions that 'la grande nation' rewards the superhuman efforts of her legionaries with the basest ingratitude." From the Preface. Previous owner's small name stamp on front pastedown, book is cracked at two places - pages are holding firmly, light to moderate edge wear with wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, slight fading to spine color, various size water marks on boards and spine, splashes of dye from board cloth on fore edge of text block, slight corner bumps.

Barrie & Jenkins, London, 1989, reprint.
240 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0712620036 "1942: The Mediterranean Operation Stonehenge gets under way - a convoy laden with desperately needed fuel, food and ammunition for the besieged island of Malta sets sail. C aptain Robert Thurston commands the cruiser HMS Marathon, one of the escort vessels, on this Malta run. Thurston is a career officer with a record of conspicuous gallantry under fire, from Jutland to the North Atlantic convoys. But he is al s o a m a n under stress - in the last three years he has seen one ship go to the bottom, leaving pitifully few survivors; he has seen his closest friends and shipmates killed and maimed; he has carried the impossibly heavy burden of responsibilit y fo r h i s me n's welfare in the bloody destruction of war at sea. And soon another cause for concern is added to his worries - Marathon is crippled by enemy action and forced to limp towards Alexandria, a constant target for attack by sea and a ir , v ul ner ab le to the weather and to the enemy alike. Men and machines are stretched to their limit - but the most deadly threat to Thurston's own life and career is yet to be faced. (This) marks the debut of a superb storyteller in A.E. La ngs ford , a nov eli st to i nvite comparison with Patrick O'Brian and Nicholas Monsarrat." Very light browning to top of edge block. BEFORE THE AIRCRAFT CARRIER: THE DEVELOPMENT OF AVIATION VESSELS 1849-1922., Layman, R.D.
175 Layman, R.D. BEFORE THE AIRCRAFT CARRIER: THE DEVELOPMENT OF AVIATION VESSELS 1849-1922.
Naval Institute Press, Annapolis, Maryland, 1989.
128 pp, small 4to (10 7/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0870212109 Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, drawings. "Before the flight-deck aircraft carrier evolved, there were many attempts by the navies of the world to take flying m achines to sea. This book describes by particulars and brief histories the surface craft that over a span of 73 years were employed experimentally or operationally in efforts to adapt aerial devices to the service of naval warfare. Many of t h e s e w ere influential in the development of shipboard aviation; others were less so but are included because of their interest. The book concentrates on vessels employed principally, or solely, for aeronautical purposes, and omits detailed p ar ti cu la rs of ships whose usage involved no permanent conversion. However, although the book is devoted largely to vessels predating the flight-deck carrier, the first three ships are described, since they represent the culmination of nearl y thr ee- qua rte rs o f a century of theory, experiment and practical experience. (This book) follows the successful approach of the 'Conway's Fighting Ships' series, divided by country with general introductions followed by tabular data and hist or ies of a ll t he s hip s. Th e book is illustrated with some very rare photos of these little-known vessels and their aircraft." Slight bump at top/bottom of spine, previous owner's embossed stamp on half-title page. London B.T. Batsford 1960 First Edition Very Good- Very Good-
224 pp, large 8vo (9" H). B&w photographs, reproductions, floor plans/elevations. "(S)tarting in the sixteenth century, author and reader begin their survey of Iberian Baroque with the Plateresque in Spain and the Manoeline in Portugal, and continue it until, two hundred or so years later, they reach the High Baroque conclusion of Castile, Seville and Granada, and the Rococo decadence of eighteenth-century Portugal. On the way they will have examined some architectural and sculptural masterpieces of astonishing quality and individuality: the palaces or houses of Mafra, Queluz and La Granja; Santiago da Compostela, the Escorial, the Cartuja of Coimbra; sculpture at Macarena, Alcobaca and Arouca; the Transparante of Toledo Cathedral, the convents of Bom Jesus, Tomar and Evora. These, and many other churches, cathedrals, palaces and domestic buildings are illustrated in a collection of nearly 100 pictures which show, as unmistakably as Mr. Lees -Milne's text, that Baroque, while it transcends frontiers, partakes as fully as any other style in regional and national characteristics." Then all thoughts of f ig ht in g st o p as the sink-hole collapses, and the four children are catapulted into the labyrinth below. A rock fall seals off their escape.
