THE WORLD GUIDE TO GNOMES, FAIRIES, ELVES AND OTHER LITTLE PEOPLE., Keightley, Thomas.
166 Keightley, Thomas. THE WORLD GUIDE TO GNOMES, FAIRIES, ELVES AND OTHER LITTLE PEOPLE.
New York Avenel 1978 0517263130 / 9780517263136 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
560 pp, 8vo (8 1/4" H). B&w illustrations. First Avenel reprinting of the 1878 G. Bell edition. "Kelpies, Korrigans, Pixies and Peries, Deeves, Brownies, and Bugaboos - these are just a few of the fantastic figures you will encounter in this unique collection of fairy mythology. Gnomes, faries, and elves of every imaginable size, shape, color, and demeanor spring to life in this marvelously illustrated guide to the fairy realm. Just one glance at the extensive table of contents reveals the scope and variety of fairy folklore explored here - from Persian and Arabian romance to the mythology of Scandinavia, England, France, Germany, and Switzerland. In addition, the author includes sections dealing with the more obscure fairy folkore and tradition of Greece, Spain, Italy, Africa, and the Middle East. Indeed, (he) has left no stone unturned in accomplishing the task he set for himself: 'to collect, arrange and classify and give under one point of view the various ideas and legends respecting fairies and similar beings of the popular creed.' Taken from a variety of sources of popular myth and legend, (it) forms a rich compendium of the superstitions surrounding those enchanting lesser deities, 'the little people'. Not only does (he) explore every type and species, but he also traces resemblances and similarities among the fairy traditions of different countries. For instance, did you know that the Nis (Scandianavia), the Kobold (Germany), and the Goblin (England) are all names for one species, which appears in Scotland under the name of Brownie, and that the Brownie is a person of small stature and wrinkled visage, is covered with short and curly brown hair, and wears a brown mantle and hood? In addition, Keightley discusses the fairy tradition as it appears in major works of English literature, from the Middle Age epic of 'Beowulf' and Chaucer's 'Canterbury Tales' to Spencer's 'The Faerie Queene' and Shakespeare's 'A Midsummer Night's Dream'." Light wear/wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, two repaired small tears at top of spine. Dust jacket has several archivally taped tears - mainly at top of spine/hinges - one with creases, light browning at top inside of spine.

" 'Coco' Chanel changed the way women dressed, brought them a new chic, and liberated them forever. But she paid a tremendous pric e for her domination of the fashion scene, a reign that lasted six decades. She was driven by her ambition to build an international empire and become a millionairess. Happiness, however, eluded her. The luck that attended her professional ca r e e r was absent from her private life. The great love of her life died in a car crash. She was wooed by an English Duke, a Russian Prince and by one of the greatest French poets of the age. The man she finally sought to marry dropped dead in fr on t of her. She outlived nearly all her lovers and died alone, feeling a failure. This handsome new biography, lavishly illustrated with specially commissioned paintings and with photographs, tells of her extraordinary life, her tragedies and tr ium ph s, and explains her unique appeal both as a woman and as a great designer." Toronto University of Toronto Press 1973 0802051472 / 9780802051479 Reprinted with Corrections Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good
945 pp, 9 1/2" H. "This major effort of a large group of scholars working in the field of Canadian literature provides a comprehensive, up-to-date reference work on the English literary history of Canada. It will be invaluable as a source of information on authors, genres, and literary trends and influences. It is also a fascinating account, lively and well written, of the ways in which writers have over the centuries striven to record reactions to a powerful natural environment and to their society against the background of other literary traditions in English. This volume represents a positive attempt to give a history of Canada in terms of writings which deserve attention because of significant thought, form, and use of language; it also aims to contribute to criticism by offering reasons for singling out those works regarded as the best." Very minor edge wear to boards. Dust jacket is price-clipped, has light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, slight fading to spine color, light rubbing on spine.

THE LEGION MARCHES: THE WOES AND WRONGS OF THE FOREIGN LEGION., Klose, Fritz, Ex-Legionary. Translated by Claud W. Sykes.
173 Klose, Fritz, Ex-Legionary. Translated by Claud W. Sykes. THE LEGION MARCHES: THE WOES AND WRONGS OF THE FOREIGN LEGION.
London John Hamilton Hard Cover Good-
287 pp, 8 3/4" H. No date, but 1935 has been pencilled on the title page under the translator's name. Red cloth with gilt lettering on spine and front board. 20 b&w plates (29 b&w photographs) - collated. "On every possible occasion France boasts of being a loving mother to her adopted children - whom she has rescued from hunger and misery to lead along the paths of glory and fame. Court-martials, brutal treatment, heavy sentences for trifling offences, callous doctors, and unspeakable sanitary conditons, all combine to tell a different tale. 'Marche ou creve!' Give your last ounce of strength or break down! 'Honneur, valeur et discipline!' are also embroidered in gold and silver letters on the Legion's banners - at least on those of the original regiments. The word 'discipline' has now acquired such a notorious significance in the Legion that on the standards of newly-formed regiments it is replaced by 'fidelite'. But when the Legion goes on active service the old principle of 'marche ou creve' still holds good. The following chapters will prove the truth of my assertions that 'la grande nation' rewards the superhuman efforts of her legionaries with the basest ingratitude." From the Preface. Previous owner's small name stamp on front pastedown, book is cracked at two places - pages are holding firmly, light to moderate edge wear with wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, slight fading to spine color, various size water marks on boards and spine, splashes of dye from board cloth on fore edge of text block, slight corner bumps.

177 Laffan, R.G.D. THE SERBS: THE GUARDIANS AT THE GATE.
Dorset, New York, 1989, reprint.
299 pp, 8vo (8 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0880294132 Maps. " 'The Serbs' was originally a series of lectures delivered by the renowned British historian R.G.D. Laffan. (His) lectures became so famous they were collected and publish ed in book form. Out of print for many years, (this) is the classic book on an important and misunderstood people. Too many of us only know the Serbs as precipitators of World War I, when a Serbian nationalist assassinated Austrian Archduke F r a n c i s Ferdinand in 1914 causing Austria to declare war. But Serbian history is eventful and filled with intrigue. To give us one example, (the author) brings to brilliant life the Turkish war with Serbia in which the great Serbian nobilit y w as n ea rl y annihilated, its lands distributed to the Turkish military aristocracy and the Serbian Christian peasants treated like slaves. All through this occupation the Serbs were forbidden to possess weapons, but an unquenchable desire fo r fre edo m l ed to fr equent insurrection. Finally the Treaty of Adrianople forced the Turks to evacuate. Anyone interested in a historical perpective of a great and heroic people will find (this book) as absorbing as it is inspiring. For, as Pr of esso r La ffan wr ite s ' the Serbs have shown that, despite adversity and homelessness, their spirit remains unconquerable'." Barrie & Jenkins, London, 1989, reprint.
240 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0712620036 "1942: The Mediterranean Operation Stonehenge gets under way - a convoy laden with desperately needed fuel, food and ammunition for the besieged island of Malta sets sail. C aptain Robert Thurston commands the cruiser HMS Marathon, one of the escort vessels, on this Malta run. Thurston is a career officer with a record of conspicuous gallantry under fire, from Jutland to the North Atlantic convoys. But he is al s o a m a n under stress - in the last three years he has seen one ship go to the bottom, leaving pitifully few survivors; he has seen his closest friends and shipmates killed and maimed; he has carried the impossibly heavy burden of responsibilit y fo r h i s me n's welfare in the bloody destruction of war at sea. And soon another cause for concern is added to his worries - Marathon is crippled by enemy action and forced to limp towards Alexandria, a constant target for attack by sea and a ir , v ul ner ab le to the weather and to the enemy alike. Men and machines are stretched to their limit - but the most deadly threat to Thurston's own life and career is yet to be faced. (This) marks the debut of a superb storyteller in A.E. La ngs ford , a nov eli st to i nvite comparison with Patrick O'Brian and Nicholas Monsarrat." Very light browning to top of edge block.
