161 Langsford, A.E. HMS MARATHON.
Barrie & Jenkins, London, 1989, reprint.
240 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0712620036 "1942: The Mediterranean Operation Stonehenge gets under way - a convoy laden with desperately needed fuel, food and ammunition for the besieged island of Malta sets sail. C aptain Robert Thurston commands the cruiser HMS Marathon, one of the escort vessels, on this Malta run. Thurston is a career officer with a record of conspicuous gallantry under fire, from Jutland to the North Atlantic convoys. But he is al s o a m a n under stress - in the last three years he has seen one ship go to the bottom, leaving pitifully few survivors; he has seen his closest friends and shipmates killed and maimed; he has carried the impossibly heavy burden of responsibilit y fo r h i s me n's welfare in the bloody destruction of war at sea. And soon another cause for concern is added to his worries - Marathon is crippled by enemy action and forced to limp towards Alexandria, a constant target for attack by sea and a ir , v ul ner ab le to the weather and to the enemy alike. Men and machines are stretched to their limit - but the most deadly threat to Thurston's own life and career is yet to be faced. (This) marks the debut of a superb storyteller in A.E. La ngs ford , a nov eli st to i nvite comparison with Patrick O'Brian and Nicholas Monsarrat." Very light browning to top of edge block. Dust jacket has some minor edge wrinkling, slight browning at top edge and on spine. Very Good+/Very Good+

451 pp, 9 1/3" H. An ex-library copy with the only library markings being a security tag on the rear endpaper and four lines of identification on the top right corner of the front free endpaper, crossed out with black felt pen. Dust jacket labels have been removed cleanly and shows no residue. Volume 2 of 'The L.M. Montgomery Reader' "narrates the development of L.M. Montgomery's critical reputation in the seventy years since her death in 1942. (It) traces milestones and turning points such as adaptations for stage and screen, posthumous publications, and the development of Montgomery Studies as a scholarly field. Lefebvre's introduction also considers Montgomery's publishing history in Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom at a time when her work remained in print not because it was considered part of a university canon of literature, but simply due to the continued interest of readers. The twenty samples of Montgomery scholarship included in this volume broach topics such as gender and genre, narrative strategies in fiction and life writing, translation, and Montgomery's archival papers. They reflect shifts in Montgomery's critical reputation decade by decade: the 1960s, when a milestone chapter on Montgomery coincided with a second wave of texts seeking to create a canon of Canadian literature; the 1970s, in the midst of a sustained reassessment of popular fiction and of literature by women; the 1980s, when the publication of Montgomery's life writing, which coincided with the broadcast of critically acclaimed television productions adapted from her fiction, radically altered how readers perceived her and her work; the 1990s, when a conference series on Montgomery began to generate a sustained amount of scholarship; and the opening years of the twenty-first century, when the field of Montgomery Studies became both international and interdisciplinary. This is the first book to consider the posthumous life of one of Canada's most eduringly popular authors." Very minor wear on bottom edge of boards, a small crease at top corner of half-title page, a progressively smaller light bump at top corner of pages 1 thru 80. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top edge, minor surface rubbing, two partial pieces of cello-tape on inside surface, a tiny dent on rear hinge.

Dust jacket labels have been removed cleanly and show no residue. Volume 1 of 'The L.M. Montgomery Reader' contains selections focusing "on Montgomery's role as a public celebrity and as the author of the resoundingly successful 'Anne of Green Gables' (1908). They give a strong impression of her as a writer and cultural critic as she discusses a range of topics with wit, wisdom, and humour, including the natural landscape of Prince Edward Island, her wide readership, anxieties about modernity, and the continued relevance of 'old ideals'. These essays and interviews are augmented by additional pieces that discuss her work's literary and cultural value in relation to an emerging canon of Canadian literature. Each volume (of this series) is accompanied by an extensive introduction and detailed commentary by leading Montgomery scholar Benjamin Lefebvre that trace the interplay between the author and the critic, as well as between the private and the public Montgomery." "Steamboats carrying passengers from Hamilton to Montreal via the rapids of the St. Lawrence were a popular sight in the latter half of the nineteenth century. In 1855, the 'Kingston', an iron steamboat built for John Hamilton, appeared on the Great Lakes. When the Prince of Wales (later Edward VII) toured British North America in 1860, the 'Kingston' became his floating palace for much of his time between Quebec and Toronto. While many steamboats claimed to be floating palaces, the 'Kingston' truly was one. The 'Kingston' was wrecked many times and survived spectacular fires in 1872 and 1873. Late in her career, she was converted into a salvage vessel and renamed the 'Cornwall'. In 1930 she was finally taken out and sunk near one of Kingston's ship graveyards. There she remained until diver Rick Neilson discovered her in 1989. Today, the once-palatial 'Kingston' is a popular dive site and tourist attraction." ALL ELEVATIONS UNKNOWN: AN ADVENTURE IN THE HEART OF BORNEO., Lightner, Sam, Jr.
167 Lightner, Sam, Jr. ALL ELEVATIONS UNKNOWN: AN ADVENTURE IN THE HEART OF BORNEO.
New York Broadway Books 2001 0767907566 / 9780767907569 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Very Good+
239 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). Map endpapers. "In the spring of 1999, armed with little more than a descriptiion from a book and a map labeled 'all elevations unknown', Sam Lightner and his German rock-climbing buddy, Volker, found themselves deep in the jungles of Borneo on a mission to climb a mountain that was only rumored to exist. They had only their climbing expertise to rely on and a copy of a little-known book titled 'World Within', written by Major Tom Harrisson, a British World War II soldier who had been one of the first white men ever to explore the interior jungles of the island and interact with its native peoples. He had also constructed one of the most daring and unusual campaigns in military history: In 1945, he had been assigned the near-impossible mission of parachuting blindly into the thick Borneo rain forests to unite the feuding native tribes - who then had a grisly habit of cutting off heads - against the Japanese in order to reclaim the island for the Allies. A captivating, utterly original combination of travel-adventure memoir and historical re-creation, (this book) charts Lightner's exhilarating, often harrowing quest to ascend the mountain Batu Lawi in the face of leeches, vipers, and sweat bees, and to keep his team together in one of the earth's most treacherous uncharted pockets. Along the way, (he) reconstructs a fascinating historical narrative that chronicles Tom Harrisson's adventures in Borneo during the war and illuminates an astonishing piece of forgotten World War II history. Rife with suspense and vivid detail, the two intertwining tales open up the island of Borneo, its people, and its history in a powerful, unforgettable way, and take adventure writing to new heights - ultimately the remarkable story of two adventures, separated by fifty years and united by one mountain." Dust jacket has some very light wrinkling along top edge, minor rubbing.

171 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w photographs, map. "In 1975, Joe MacInnis, pioneer in the great frontier of the Arctic Ocean, discovered a new challenge. Through an old Arctic loner and a reclusive English scholar, he learned of a sailing vessel locked for 127 years beneath the polar ice. The 'Breadalbane' was one of many ships dispatched by the British Admiralty to find Sir John Franklin the explorer, and the 129 crewmen aboard the 'Erebus' and the 'Terror'. Like many before them, the ships had sought the fabled Northwest Passage to the riches of the Orient. Neither ship nor crewmen were ever found. On its ill-fated supply run, the 'Breadalbane' had stopped at Beechey Island and then became caught in the ice. The ice lifted the craft from the water and crushed its hull, but gave the crew time to scramble to safety before opening briefly to swallow its prize. Since 1853, the 'Breadalbane' has stood upright on the ocean floor, unseen by human eyes. Joe MacInnis spent three grueling years searching for the lost ghost ship, battling fierce Arctic winds, the lethal polar waters, and icebergs weighing up to a million tons. (Here, he) takes us on his unique quest, right up to the electrifying moment when he finds the ship, largely intact, in the sub-zero waters." Minor wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light to moderate edge wear, light rubbing, several small edge tears with old tape on inside surface
