They met as art students, though Augustin was several years older than Edward, and remained lasting friends until Augustin died in 1969. 427 pp, 8vo (9 1/4" H). "Through war, depression, and social upheaval, the first half of the twentieth century was a period of unprecedented turbulence in Canada. In this lively and perhaps contentious survey, (the authors) explore the political and economic forces that shaped this era of change. Beginning at the turn of the century, they consider the status of Canada in the empire and the world, the burgeoning growth of its economy, and the development of social and labour problems, up to the eruption of war in 1914. They discuss the political currents running through Canada during two wars, the interwar economic boom and depression, and the plans for post-war reconstruction, and assess the impact of these and other events on Canada's political, economic, social, and cultural institutions." Bison, London, 1988, first edition.
192 pp, 4to (12 1/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 086124415X Profusely illustrated in colour and b&w with photographs, reproductions, drawings. "A member of the aristocracy, from the tenth century the Samurai was primarily a mounted archer . This is reflected in the light, lamellar yoroi armour which left the right arm free for drawing his bow. Helmets were simple, with leather neckpieces. Battle began with an exchange of arrows, and was followed by a series of hand-to-han d c o m b a t s among champions who relied on the sword. The long wars of Kusonoki and Ashikaga produced several changes in the nature of warfare. Fighting in wooded, mountainous countryside, hand-to-hand combat came into its own. The bulky yor oi wa s su pe rc ed ed by the lighter, less constricting do maru and the no dachi, a longer version of the naginata (glaive), was introduced. The renowned Samurai cult of the sword began in this period. The Samurai's most ornate and elaborate ar mou r da te s f rom th e T oku gawa era, and was probably not intended for use in actual battle. The long development of arms and armour in the Samurai's 700-year history is fully detailed in this handsome volume. Illustrated with over 300 photo grap hs , (i t) will be a we lcom e ad dition to the libraries of all military enthusiasts." The parched, mineral earth gets less than three inches of rainfall a year on average; some years, none at all. Yet this is one of the most fascinating and beautiful places in North America. A large variety of plants - cr e o s o t e bush, the fabled boojum, and numerous other cacti and succulents - flourish here, as do a wealth of birds, insects, and small mammals. Man is an uneasy resident, and, although modern cities such as Phoenix and Tucson survive on its fri ng es , th e na tural heart of the desert still rejects all but the most intrepid sojourners. Two who know this desert well are (the author and photographer of this book). 171 Bowman, John S., general editor. Introduction by Fox Butterfield. THE VIETNAM WAR: DAY BY DAY.
Mallard, New York, 1989.
224 pp, 4to (12 1/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0792450876 Profusely illustrated with color and b&w photographs, maps. "....a detailed chronological account of this 'Thirty Years War' of the twentieth century. It traces the history of t he war from its earliest nineteenth-century origins to its gloomy aftermath in the 1980s. In so doing, it not only illuminates the interplay of policies, personalities, motives and strategies that shaped the war, but also the web of diplo m a t i c , p o l itical, social and ethical conflicts to which it gave rise and which, in the end, had such an important bearing on its outcome. It reveals, too, the many apparent paradoxes that political and military historians will ponder for y ea rs t o co me : h ow , for example, high-technology warfare foundered in conditions of primitive guerrilla, or how the United States lost the war psychologically at the very moment of the U.S. forces' greatest military success. Carefully resear che d, min ut ely de ta ile d, il lustrated with hundreds of historical photographs, many in color, and with maps by the celebrated miltitary cartographer Richard Natkiel, (this) is both a fascinating recapitulation of the war, exactly as the world exp eri ence d i t, a nd a n i mpor tan t w ork of reference for laymen and scholars alike." HURRICANE AT WAR., Bowyer, Chaz. Foreword by Group Captain T.P. Gleave.
175 Bowyer, Chaz. Foreword by Group Captain T.P. Gleave. HURRICANE AT WAR.
Shepperton Ian Allan 1974 0711005648 / 9780711005648 First Edition Very Good- Very Good Dust jacket art by Rex Flood.
160 pp, 11 1/4" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs. "The Hawker Hurricane has a permanent niche in the annals of military aviation history as the world's first operational eight-gun monoplane fighter and the RAF's first front-line fighter to achieve more than 300mph in level flight. But it has received little credit for its subsequent lion's share of the defence of the United Kingdom during the 1940 Battle of Britain, and its later service in a score of fighting roles across every theatre of operations during the 1939-45 war. In this book the author sets out to redress this omission in due recognition of the Hurricane's magnificent record. With a collation of authentic, first-hand impressions and experiences by the men who flew and serviced the Hurricane, backed by a unique collection of specially selected photographs, many from private sources, he has recreated the genuine atmosphere of Hurricane operations. This amalgam of text and photographs traces the story of the Hurricane and its crews from the first prototype and pre-1939 service to France 1940; through the Battle of Britain; in the frozen wastes of North Russia; over beleagured Malta; across Sicily and Greece and as far afield as the Burmese jungle. There are pilots' accounts of low-level bombing sorties covering the disastrous Dieppe invasion, a personal story by the only fighter pilot of World War II to be awarded the Victoria Cross, and pictorial sections illustrating the armament, markings and, especially, the men who knew the Hurricane best - the crews." Multiple creases at bottom of pages 27 thru 40. very small crease/bump at top corner of pages 83 thru 102, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, one tiny corner bump, small shallow bump and a tiny scuff at top edge of rear board. Dust jacket has light rubbing, areas of light wrinkling at top edge.

MOSQUITO AT WAR., Bowyer, Chaz. Foreword by Max Aitken.
176 Bowyer, Chaz. Foreword by Max Aitken. MOSQUITO AT WAR.
London Ian Allan 1989 0711004749 / 9780711004740 Reprint Very Good Very Good
144 pp, 11 1/4" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs. "From the outset the Mosquito was a daring concept. That an unarmed bomber, constructed almost wholly of wood and relying on pure speed, could evade the immensely powerful air defences of Nazi Germany by night, let alone by day, was completely against contemporary Air Force thinking and war experience. The result was an aircraft which became the most successful fighter and bomber of World War II. Extreme versatility led to its use in a wide range of operational roles - day and night bomber, night fighter, intruder, Pathfinder, shipbuster, bomber support, reconnaissance and a dozen others. Mosquitos served too in practically every theatre of war from Britain to Burma. In this book the author has recaptured the unique appeal of the Mosquito to the fighting airmen of World War II and the high spirits and elan that distinguished Mosquito Squadrons everywhere. First-hand accounts of operations by the men who flew the aircraft are illuminated by a remarkable collection of over 200 photographs. They depict the Mosquito in all its various guises and roles. They show, too, the patient, painstaking and frequently hazardous work of the ground crews who, for their part, also shared in the Mosquito spirit." Book is cocked, very small tear (archivally taped) with crease at top of rear free endpaper. Dust jacket has been price-clipped, has minor wear/light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, light rubbing.

532 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2' H). B&w photographs, maps. "No. 2 Group was formed in Bomber Command to support the Army. After equipping with Blenheims it specialized in daylight operations. It engaged in the first raid of the war. After taking part in the Norweigan campaign, it was thrown into the struggle to save France. Heavy losses ensued during operations demanding great courage. A hazardous anti-shipping campaign took the Group to Malta. Night intruder operations were made against airfields, and fighter-escorted attacks on Occupied Territory continued until the 1944 Allied landings in France, where support to the invasion was subsequently given and an effective night interdictor campaign carried out. The Group mounted many spectacular operations, particularly when using Mosquitoes. This is indeed a story of immense courage. Based upon records maintained by Royal Air Force Commands, Groups and Squadrons together with personal accounts by those who flew with the Group, the book gives a detailed day-by-day picture of operations, their planning and execution, illustrated with detailed maps. Appendices give plentiful details of the aircraft, the squadrons and the Group's wartime effort." Three small dints on rear board, light rubbing.
