302 pp, 9 1/4" H. Pictorial endpapers, b&w illustrations. "Drawing on his unmatched firearms knowledge and combat experience, Kyle carefully chose ten guns to help tell (American history): the American long rifle, Spencer repeater, Colt. 45 revolver, Winchester rifle, Springfield 1903 rifle, Thompson submachine gun, 1911 pistol, M1 Garand, .38 Special police revolver, and the M16 rifle platform Kyle himself used as a SEAL. Through them, he revisits thrilling turning points in American history, including the single sniper shot that turned the tide of the Revolutionary War, the firearms designs that proved decisive at Gettsyburg, the 'gun that won the West', and the weapons that gave U.S. soldiers an edge in the world wars and beyond. This is also the story of how firearms innovation, creativity, and industrial genius has constantly pushed American history - and power - forward." Light wrinkling at bottom of spine. Riverdale, NY Baen First Printiings Mass Market Paperbacks Very Good Darrell K. Sweet, cover art.
First four books of the 'Bardic Voices' series, 6 3/4" H. 1. The Lark and the Wren - 488 pp, 1992, ISBN 0671720996. "With the proper schooling young Rune would be one of the greatest bards her world has ever seen. Even if only she knows it. Unfortunately, the daughter of a tavern wench at the Hungry Bear, no matter how talented, doesn't get much in the way of formal training. One night, to back up a brag she probably wouldn't have made if she weren't so mad, she went up to play her fiddle for the Ghost of Skull Hill. Everyone knows that no one who has ever gone up Skull Hill at night has come down again. Not alive, anway. But when the ghost appears Rune strikes a bargain: if the ghost tires of her playing before morning her life is his; if he is still listening when the sun glints over yonder hill she will have earned both life and a sack of silver. Let the music begin - ." 2. The Robin and the Kestrel - 373 pp, 1994, ISBN 0671876287. "After the affairs recounted in (Book I), Robin, a gypsy lass and bard, and Kestrel, semi-fugitive heir to a throne he does not want, have married their fortunes together and travel the open road, seeking their happiness where they may find it. This is their story. But it is also the story of the Ghost of Skull Hill, the very ghost who gave Rune a bag of silver and her start in life rather than her death when she played the night away. Together, the Robin, the Kestrel, and the Ghost will foil a plot to drive all music from the land - but first, the Robin and the Kestrel must tame the killer Ghost." 2.5. A Cast of Corbies (Bardic Choices) - 311 pp, 1994, ISBN 0671722077. "A strange pall has settled over Alanda. Everywhere representatives of the Church seek to ferret out unauthorized magic - and music, because it is magic at its roots, has come under suspicion. And that which is suspect, if it cannot be crushed altogether, must be stripped of its mystery, made tame and answerable to the power of the priests. Throughout the lands the Free Bards, those who will not or cannot join the priest-condoned Guild, are being driven away. But all who are Free are free to choose: to flee or to fight." 3. The Eagle & the Nightingales - 410 pp, 1996, ISBN 0671877062. "Why is the High King of the Human kingdoms not doing his job - and thereby allowing the Church to fill the power vacuum in the human lands of Alanda? This is a matter of some concern to Nightingale and her friends: the Church is becoming ever more overtly hostile to non-human sentients (of which there are several species in Alanda) as well as to anything that it does not at least indirectly control, such as gypsies and Free Bards. To discover just what is going on, she will join forces with T'fyrr, a birdman with the visage of a raptor and the voice of an angelic choir. And before the King - and through him the gypsies, Free Bards and non-humans of the twenty kingdoms - is saved they, the Eagle and the Nightingale, will have become if not quite lovers, then far more than friends - ." 363 pp, 9 1/4" H. Map. One of 'The American Trails Series'. "Hundreds of white traders operated throughout the area for 300 years. They rubbed elbows with Jesuit priests, Indians, Scottish settlers, and English adversaries. Guided by Indians, they worked out canoe routes which eventually stretched nearly 4000 miles. They suffered portages and freeze-ups which today stagger the imagination. They lived on pemmican and wild rice, berries and fish, and risked losing their lives on every trip they made. Here are the stories of the epic fights between the Nor'west and the Hudson's Bay Company's men; the struggles between those living in a new land and their governors thousands of miles away; the feats of such great explorers as Radisson, Fraser, Simpson, and Mackenzie." An ex-library copy with the only library markings being a security tag on the rear endpaper and four lines of identification on the top right corner of the front free endpaper, crossed out with black felt pen. Dust jacket labels have been removed cleanly and shows no residue. Volume 2 of 'The L.M. Montgomery Reader' "narrates the development of L.M. Montgomery's critical reputation in the seventy years since her death in 1942. (It) traces milestones and turning points such as adaptations for stage and screen, posthumous publications, and the development of Montgomery Studies as a scholarly field. Lefebvre's introduction also considers Montgomery's publishing history in Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom at a time when her work remained in print not because it was considered part of a university canon of literature, but simply due to the continued interest of readers. The twenty samples of Montgomery scholarship included in this volume broach topics such as gender and genre, narrative strategies in fiction and life writing, translation, and Montgomery's archival papers. They reflect shifts in Montgomery's critical reputation decade by decade: the 1960s, when a milestone chapter on Montgomery coincided with a second wave of texts seeking to create a canon of Canadian literature; the 1970s, in the midst of a sustained reassessment of popular fiction and of literature by women; the 1980s, when the publication of Montgomery's life writing, which coincided with the broadcast of critically acclaimed television productions adapted from her fiction, radically altered how readers perceived her and her work; the 1990s, when a conference series on Montgomery began to generate a sustained amount of scholarship; and the opening years of the twenty-first century, when the field of Montgomery Studies became both international and interdisciplinary. This is the first book to consider the posthumous life of one of Canada's most eduringly popular authors." Very minor wear on bottom edge of boards, a small crease at top corner of half-title page, a progressively smaller light bump at top corner of pages 1 thru 80. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top edge, minor surface rubbing, two partial pieces of cello-tape on inside surface, a tiny dent on rear hinge.

LONDON'S UNDERWORLD: THREE CENTURIES OF VICE AND CRIME., Linnane, Fergus.
169 Linnane, Fergus. LONDON'S UNDERWORLD: THREE CENTURIES OF VICE AND CRIME.
London Robson 2008 1861057423 / 9781861057426 Soft Cover Very Good
372 pp, 7 3/4" H. B&w plates. "London is a city that thrives on crime and the myths of crime, as its violent history and the colourful portrayal of criminals in fiction, from Defoe to Dickens, attest. (This book) examines the murky underside ot the capital, surveying three centuries of vice and crime and a variety of perilous underworlds. Linnane's writing is full of vivid detail as he describes the city's underworld characters, such as the loathed, murderous, eighteenth century bounty hunter Jonathan Wild, the Italian Sabini gang which dominated London in the early twentieth century, and the more recent Billy Hill, Jack Spot, Frankie Fraser, Kray twins and Adams family. (It) takes us on the nightmarish last journeys of condemned criminals to the gallows at Tyburn. We enter death-trap eighteenth century prisons, one of which the novelist Henry Fielding described as a 'prototype of hell'. We walk the crowded streets of Victorian London with its swarms of prostitutes and follow the ingenious villains who carried out the first great train robbery in 1854. We see the rise and fall of the interwar racecourse gangs and the bloody battle for control of the West End. This fascinating book, containing 25 images, illustrates how crime in the capital has evolved from the extreme violence of the early eighteenth century to the vastly more complex and lucrative, but no less brutal, gangland of today." Interior - previous owner's place, date and signature along with small area of liquid paper on half-title page; otherwise clean and tight with no other ownership marks. Exterior - minor edge wear/wrinkling, minor rubbing, faint crease on spine, one very small corner crease.

THE TOM THOMSON MYSTERY., Little, William T. Foreword by W.J. Eastaugh.
170 Little, William T. Foreword by W.J. Eastaugh. THE TOM THOMSON MYSTERY.
Toronto McGraw-Hill 1970 0070926557 / 9780070926554 Hard Cover Good+ Good+
239 pp, 8 1/2" H. B&w photographs, reproductions, map. "In 1956, nearly forty years after the death of Canadian artist, Tom Thomson, William T. Little and three companions set themselves to a macabre task. Ever since July 16, 1917, when the artist's badly decomposed body was found floating in the waters of Canoe Lake, controversy and conjecture hovered over the matter of how Tom Thomson really met his death. It was as a result of this prolonged uncertainty that the four men began digging in the little cemetery in Algonquin Park where Thomson was supposedly buried. They were determined to solve, if only for themselves, part of the mystery that surrounded the name of Tom Thomson. What they discovered only confirmed their suspicion that the full story of Thomson's untimely death was not in fact as history had recorded it. The lack of sound and conclusive evidence from earlier investigations set William Little into action. Meticulously he pieced together everything that had ever been written, documented, speculated, or theorized about Thomson during the artist's lengthy periods in Algonquin Park - with special emphasis on those strange events which occurred prior to and after his 'accidental death by drowning'. On the one hand William Little has been able to give us a fuller understanding of both Thomson's personality and his instincts as a painter. On the other, he has amassed considerable evidence that suggests a murder, a suspect, and a motive." Large diagonal creasing on page leaf xiii/xiv, small light stain on fore-edge of text block. Dust jacket has light browning at edges and on spine/flap-folds, several very small edge tears and one small 'v' tear on front hinge - all archivally taped, light rubbing/soiling, large corner crease on front flap.

"For the first time, the architectural history of the town of Lexington and its t wo nationally distinguished campuses has been appraised in a scholarly fashion. This Valley of Virginia community together with Washington and Lee University and the Virginia Military Institute, presents exceptionally fine examples of American architectural styles from the late eighteenth to the early twentieth century. A remarkable number of architects of national reputation, including Thomas U. Walter, Alexander Jackson Davis, and Bertram G. Goodhue, completed important work here. This new study places the noteworthy buildings and their designers within the context of the architectural development of the Valley region and assesses their role in the evolution of the nation's styles.
