ARNHEM LIFT - AND THE GERMAN VERSION. (NEW AND EXPANDED EDITION)., Hagen, Louis. Foreword by Lieutenant-General Sir Frederick A.M. Browning. (Winrich Behr.)
165 Hagen, Louis. Foreword by Lieutenant-General Sir Frederick A.M. Browning. (Winrich Behr.) ARNHEM LIFT - AND THE GERMAN VERSION. (NEW AND EXPANDED EDITION).
London Leo Cooper 1993 0850523753 / 9780850523751 New, Expanded and Revised Edition. Near Fine Very Good+
118 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). B&w photographs, maps. "The airborne troops who landed at Arnhem in September 1944 suffered appalling casualties in the course of the nine-day battle; of some 10,000 men who went into action, 1,400 were killed and more than 6,000 - about a thrid of them wounded - were captured. British accounts have almost invariably praised the Germans' humane treatment of these prisoners. Had the young Sergeant 'Lewis Haig' been captured, however, his fate would have been markedly different, for the Nazis would have reacted with characteristic savagery to a German of Jewish extraction fighting against them as a member of the elite Glider Pilot Regiment. But 'Haig' - Louis Hagen - was one of the few who got back, to write the first and, as is widely accepted, one of the very best personal accounts of the battle. Forty-five years after the battle, at a dinner party in Germany, the author found himself next to a man of about his own age, the former Major Winrich Behr who had been Adjutant to Field-Marshal Model during the Arnhem battle. The two men became friends. Louis Hagen's interest in the battle was rekindled and Behr told him his own side of the story, which is included here. Here, too, are balanced assessments of the planning and strategy of the operation, of the remarkable German reaction to the airborne incursion, and of the reasons for its failure." Very slight bump at bottom of rear hinge. Dust jacket has minor wrinkling at top of spine, minor rubbing.

166 Haining, Peter, compiler. (Sir Ralph Sorley, 'Johnnie' Johnson, Eric Marrs, John Allen, 'Gun Buster', Gavin Lyall, Ronald Adams, Charles Gardner, Sir Douglas Bader, Brian Kingcome, R.F. London Futura 1990 0708844383 / 9780708844380 Reprint Very Good
160 pp, 7 3/4" H. B&w illustrations. "On 6 March 1936 was born one of the most famous and best-loved aeroplanes the world has ever known, the Spitfire. Just four years later its courageous young RAF pilots became the heroes of the Battle of Britain as they repelled the Luftwaffe attack. When, at the height of the conflict, supplies of metal for new Spitfires ran short, thousands of people donated old pots and pans for the sake of the gallant fighter. Today the Spitfire is still remembered with affection by all who flew in her. This tribute brings together a fascinating collection of writings by men who flew or admired her, from the top Allied flying ace of the Second World War, Air Vice Marshal 'Johnnie' Johnson, to his German counterpart, General Major Adolf Galland, and from such illustrious names as H.E. Bates, Richard Hillary, Lord Beaverbrook and Richard Dimbleby. As well as thrilling accounts of aerial combat the book includes a Battle of Britain chronology, a list of the twenty Spitfire squadrons and their bases, the plane's specifications, the story of its creation and a list of museums where Spitfires can now be seen." Interior - light cigarette odour, very light browning to pages, otherwise clean and tight with no previous owner's marks. Exterior - light browning to edges of text block, minor edge wear, soft crease at top of front cover.

168 Halliday, Hugh A. (Vernon C. 'Woody' Woodward.) WOODY: A FIGHTER PILOT'S ALBUM.
Toronto CANAV 1987 0969070381 / 9780969070382 1st Printing Very Good Very Good
144 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). B&w photographs, maps. "The late 1930s was a time of restlessness for many young Canadians. For some, nothing short of a trip to England and a visit to the RAF recruiter could satisfy their urge for adventure. One who followed this path was Vernon C. Woodward, a British Columbian from Victoria. (This book traces Woodward's) flying career fromTiger Moths in Scotland, then on to advanced training and out to pre-war Egypt to his first posting. (When war breaks out) the young pilots are flung against a seemingly overwhelming enemy. They do their best, flying their little biplane Gladiators. Woody records his first kill as the pace of combat accelerates daily. Soon Woody's squadron is called to Greece to face even harsher odds with an onslaught of Messerschmitts and Junkers. Woody's tally of kills grows steadily, as does that of many of his mates, but one by one he is losing his friends as the unequal struggle continues. Inevitably the British must withdraw. They make their last stand on Crete, where the situtation is hopeless from the start. Soon there is not a single airworthy Hurricane and Woody and his fellow airmen must take rifle and Tommy gun in hand to fight rugged German parachutists at close quarters. In the end, the British forces made a humilitating retreat to Egypt, where Woody again faces the enemy and records his 20th and final kill, making him one of Canada's leading aces of either world war." Dust jacket has some light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-foldsm slight wrinkling at top edge.

WILLIAM HEATH ROBINSON., Hamilton, James.
169 Hamilton, James. WILLIAM HEATH ROBINSON.
London Pavilion 1992 1851457194 / 9781851457199 First Edition Fine Near Fine William Heath Robinson.
151 pp, 12 1/8" H. B&w and colour reproductions, photographs. "In this first fully illustrated monograph of William Heath Robinson's life and work, James Hamilton makes a refreshingly new exploration of the personality of this convivial family man and deeply serious artist. Through fascinating new insights, he traces the influences on his art, the development of his uniquely individual humorous style, and the unexpected path that his career followed: the switch from landscapes to book illustration, and early success as illustrator of Poe, Cervantes and Hans Andersen; the creation of his engaging character Uncle Lubin, his cartoons for magazines, and the First World War anti-German satires which earned him an enthusiastic following. Only after he had submitted his illustrations for a 'Complete Works of Shakespeare' in 1922, promptly cancelled, did Heath Robinson turn away from literary illustration. Then came the immensely popular books on golf and railways and motoring, murals and decorations for a liner, gadgets for the Ideal Home Exhibition of 1934, and a wealth of inspired magazine and commercial work. Hamilton rounds off his account of Heath Robinson's life and career with detailed appendices, including a chronology of his life, an important discussion of his sources, comprehensive bibliographies, and lists of his exhibitions, advertising work and ephemera. Published here for the first time are examples of the recently discovered Shakespeare illustrations." Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling.

UNKNOWN SOLDIERS: THE STORY OF THE MISSING OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR., Hanson, Neil.
171 Hanson, Neil. UNKNOWN SOLDIERS: THE STORY OF THE MISSING OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR.
Alfred A. Knopf, New York, 2005, first American edition.
474 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0307263703 B&w photographs, map. "The First World War was a conflict of unprecedented ferocity that unleashed such demons as mechanized warfare and mass death on the twentieth century. After the last shot was fired and the troops marched home, approximately three million soldiers remained unaccounted for. Some bodies were found, but they bore no trace of identification; many more men had been blown to smithereens or had s i m p l y vanished into battlefields where as many as a hundred shells had fallen on every square yard. An unassuming English chaplain first proposed a symbolic burial of one of those unknown soldiers in memory of all the missing dead. The idea w as p ic ke d u p by almost every country that had an army in the war, and each laid a body to rest amid an outpouring of national grief - in London's Westminster Abbey, Paris's Arc de Triomphe, Rome's Victor Emmanuelle Monument, and, for the United St ate s, Arl in gt on National Cemetery in Virginia. In (this book, the author) offers an unflinching yet compassionate account of the reality of battle on the front lines. He focuses on three soldiers - an American, an Englishman, and a German - an d na rra tes the ir war experiences through their diaries and letters. (He) describes how each man endured the nearly unbearable conditions in the trenches and in the air and relates what is known about their deaths; all three died on the batt lefie lds o f th e So mme, wi thin gunshot sound of one another. He delves into their familial ties, the ideals they expressed in their letters, and he explains how the death of one, the American pilot George Seibold, was instrumental in the creat ion of the G old S tar M other s, a n organization caring for bereaved mothers, wives, and families that is still active today. Hanson animates and brings to life the combatants who perished without a trace, and shows how the Western world arrived at the now ti me-hon ored w ay of mourn ing and paying tribute to all those who die in war." 172 Harclerode, Peter. Foreword by General Sir John Hackett. ARNHEM: A TRAGEDY OF ERRORS.
London Caxton 2000 1840671467 / 9781840671469 Reprint Very Good+ Very Good-
192 pp, large 8vo (9 3/8" H). B&w photographs, maps. "Operation 'Market Garden' remains one of the most spectacular and controversial battles of the Second World War. It was a bold plan, aimed at shortening the course of the war dramatically. Key bridges in Holland seized in advance by a daring airborne 'coup de main' would be the means to a surprise thrust into the German industrial heartland. On the fiftieth anniversary of the operation, (the author) has pieced together an important new view of what was a considerable failure. Existing accounts direct most of the blame at XXX Corps, and two divisions in particular, for failing to push the ground advance forward. This new work sets out to provide an objective and realistic appraisal of why things went wrong - and who in truth should have borne the responsibility. Why, for example, were demands for proper signals equipment for the airborne troops ignored, with predictable consequences? Why was intelligence pointing towards the fatal presence of the 9th and 10th SS Panzer Divisions ignored before the operation? And why, with Allied air forces in a position to dominate the skies above the battlefield, was air support so lacking and ineffectual? While some of the questions needed for a definitive judgement can never be answered, this book represents an important step towards redressing the balance of criticism and allowing a new view of the bloody battles for Arnhem and Oosterbeek." 173 Harclerode, Peter. Foreword by Lieutenant General Sir Michael Gray. PARA! FIFTY YEARS OF THE PARACHUTE REGIMENT.
London Brockhampton 1999 1860199127 / 9781860199127 Very Good+ Very Good
415 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). B&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "The catalyst for the formation of British airborne forces came with the spectacular display of the capabilities of airborne assault by the German forces in the blitzkrieg against the west in 1940. Impressed by the daring and courage of the fallschirmjager, Churchill sought to create a similar arm for the British Army. Initially airborne operations were carried out by volunteers from all regiments and corps. While Britain was on the defensive, the newly formed parachute units took part in two airborne raids, carrying the war to the enemy in Italy and France. Of these, the most famous is the raid on Bruneval in 1942, during which German radar technology was captured. By the time the Allies were ready to invade 'Fortress Europe' in 1944, The Parachute Regiment, which had been formed in 1942, comprised a large number of well equipped and highly trained battalions. Those of the 6th Airborne Division were given the task of holding the vital left flank of the Normandy invasion beaches to block German reinforcements and ensure swift Allied breakout over the strategically vital bridges. The Regiment's most famous hour was again an excellent example of the nature of the warfare it had been conceived to conduct: the ill-fated combined airborne/ground assault in Holland in September 1944 depended entirely on a surprise airborne assault to open a corridor into Germany along which the British Second Army was to pour into the heart of Hitler's Reich. Although the plan failed, it firmly established The Parachute Regiment as an elite force: tough, well-trained and capable of undertaking hazardous operations deep in enemy territory. This tradition is no less true now, fifty years on, with the post-war period having seen many further stirring examples of the Regiment's skill and valour throughout the world: from Suez and the jungles of Malaya to the mountains of the Radfan, the Falkland Islands and duties in Northern Ireland." "Transformed almost overnight from third mate on a tanker into a Royal Naval Reserve lieutenant, Murdoch Murray Magnusson found that with 1939 drawing to a close ne ither he nor the war itself seemed to be getting anywhere. But then a summons to London from Admiral Sir James Cockayne radically changed all that. The admiral wanted to know about Magnusson's knowledge of certain Scandinavian languages a n d a b o u t his apprenticeship in sail. The Navy needed information about German raiders and blockade runners operating in northern waters, and one of the places to get it was the neutral port of Narvik. Magnusson was to go there in a windjamm er : t he b ar qu e ' Oulu' which, furthermore, was to sail under false colours. On arrival, he was startled to find that 'Oulu' was not the only windjammer in the northern fjord. Soon he and the crew of the old sailing ship were to play a key ro le in t he his tor ic re sc ue of British prisoners from the notorious prison-ship 'Altmark', and then to plunge into the maelstrom of the German invasion of Norway...." ISBN 1897884370 "A detailed reference directory which includes all the main German tracked armoured fighting vehicles and their variants that fought in World War II. That service having become impossible to him under Hitler, he lived in Germany for a time in active opposition to the government before finding his way as a volunteer, after the war began, into the ranks of the British A r m y , f r o m which he was invalided out. Here he reviews the careers of Hitler's generals in the light of their environment and their mental training, portraying most of them from personal contact either with the men themselves or with officer s of t he i r im me di a te circle. He presents their history under Hitler and in Hitler's war with intimate glimpses that should make clearer the governing influence upon the nation and the results, all unforeseen, of Hitler's rise upon them." "Christopher Haworth went to the front near Ypres in 1918: an apprentice law writer of just nineteen, full of idealism and perhaps a little priggish. He became a good soldier, though not in the way of the Regular Army; he missed the slogging disillusion of First and Second Ypres, the Battles of the Aisne and Somme. He was typical of the new, amateur army which was needed to replace the flower of the R e g u l a r A r m y who had held the initial German advances in 1914-15. This is a personal, highly individual account of those last epic months of the Great War and from it emerges some idea of that unwarlike, unexpected quality which thwarted th e pl an s of L u de nd or ff and brought us final victory on the Western Front...." 240 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). B&w photographs, family tree. "Few people know about the affair Adolf Hitler had with his niece, Geli Raubal. It started in 1927, when he was thirty-eight and she was nineteen. Already leader of the National Socialist German Workers' Party, he had been imprisoned after the unsuccessful putsch of 1923, released at the end of 1924 and had been banned from speaking in public. It was then that he decided to rent a house in Obersaltzberg, an small alpine village close to the Austrian border. Geli came to live with him there, together with her mother, Angela Raubal, his widowed half-sister, but the ban was lifted before the Raubals moved in. Hitler could relax with his niece as he never had before with anyone else, and enjoyed her constant availability. He adored her and they could talk to each other uninhibitedly. The couple shared a strangely intense, passionate relationship, but it was always dogged by Hitler's intolerance, his chauvinistic attitude to womanhood and his possessive jealousy. Later, the weakening of the bond between (them) coincided with the phenomenal rise in the popularity of the Nazis. In 1931, aged twenty-three, Geli Raubal was found dead in the Munich flat she shared with Hitler, his revolver on the floor and an unfinished letter on the table. Hitler was shattered by his niece's death, and for the rest of his life couldn't speak of her without becoming emotional. (This book) examines the degeneracy in the family Hitler and Geli came from and the emotional and sexual problems Hitler suffered, thus giving the reader an opportunity to take new bearings on Hitler as a man." Light browning to pages and edges of text block, slight bump at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has some areas of light edge wrinkling.
