DEATH OF AN ARMY., Farrar-Hockley, Anthony.
162 Farrar-Hockley, Anthony. DEATH OF AN ARMY.
London Arthur Barker 1967 First Edition Hard Cover Good+ Fair
195 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). B&w photographs, maps. "(The) first Battle of Ypres (1914) is sometimes considered to have ended as a costly stalemate, but, in fact, the British Army's act of suicide in this battle resulted in victory; the Germans, in failing a breakthrough to Calais, lost forever any prospects of the outright victory they had expected to win in France. Brigadier Farrar-Hockely's skillful account of this decisive encounter, which includes a brilliant use of contemporary sources, not least among them the dramatic diaries of British soldiers, caused the 'Oxford Times' to comment: 'his book is not only a fine piece of military history; it is as exciting as a thriller'." Dust jacket has moderate edge wear/wrinkling - heavy at top of spine, light to moderate rubbing, browning and soiling at edges, delamination on front hinge, very light soiling and browning on rear panel.

Dundurn, Toronto, 2009, first edition.
236 pp, 8 1/2" H, soft cover. ISBN 9781550028539 "At a turning point in his life, George Fetherling embarked on an adventure to sail round the wrold on one of the last of the tramp freighters. The four-month voyage carried him 30,000 nautical mil es from Europe via the Panama Canal to the South Pacific and back by way of Singapore, Indonesia, the Indian Ocean, and Suez. Written with dash, colour, and droll humour, (his) narrative is peopled by a rich cast of characters, from the Forei g n L e g ionnaires of French Polnesia to the 'raskol' gangs of Papua New Guinea. The author captures the reality of life aboard a working cargo ship - the boredom, the seclusion, the differences of nationality and culture that isolation and cramp ed q u ar te rs seem to exaggerate. But the routine of loneliness or tranquility is punctuated by moments of near-panic - shipboard fires, furniture-smashing storms, even a brush with pirates in the Straits of Malacca." "....deals with the storming of Badajoz, an epic action of the Peninsular War, which involved Wellington's infantry in some of the most savage hand-to-hand fighting of the whole Peninsular period. At appalling cost, in a nightmare battle which lasted throughout the night of the 6th April 1812, they hacked their way over the bodies of their dead and through the forbiddin g medieval walls, which were held with great courage and skill by a brave French and German garrison. Having successfully stormed the breaches, the battle-crazed army went berserk and the horrors of the sacking which followed, as much as t h e s u b l i m e courage of the attackers, have passed into legend. This account, drawn wholly from the vivid descriptions of the officers and common soldiers who fought at Badajoz, is the first to be written exclusively about the siege, the st or mi ng , a nd t he s ho cking events which followed." 96 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w and color illustrations. "Sorcerers incanting over boiling cauldrons, a witch disguised as a goose, vicious poltergeists, a woman-warrior, a dangerous enchantress - these are a few of the beings that inhabit Canada's rich folklore tradition. (This) is Edith Fowke's selection of Canadian historical legends, of British and French origin, illustrated with artifacts from the collections of the Royal Ontario Museum. Of historical legends Fowke writes, 'They are more apt to be linked to a particular place or situation, and therefore reflect a country's history and culture more than other folktales'. Although native legends are often regarded as a separate study, they sometimes share motifs with non-native lore: Tecumseh, like King Arthur and Charlemagne, is a figure who in legend will one day return to lead his people. (This book) combines historical chronicle and artifact to bring to life a vanished past and the voices of those who told the tales." A few very tiny scuffs on bottom edge of boards. 640 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Volume IV only. ISBN 0674403738 B&w illustrations. "With its Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen, the French Revolution opened a whole new stage in the history of women, despite t heir conspicous absence from the playbill. The coming century would see women put in their place as never before, their subordination to men codified in all manner of new laws and rules; and yet the period would also witness the birth of fem i n i s m , the unprecedented emergence of women as a collective force in the political arena. The fourth volume in this world-acclaimed series covers the distance between these two poles. It gives us a vibrant picture of a bourgeouis century, dy na mi c an d ex p ansive, in which woman's role in the home was stressed more and more, even as the economic pressures and opportunities of the industrial revolution drew her out of the house; in which woman's growing role in the family as the cente r o f a ll mo ra ls an d virtues pressed her into public service fighting social ills...." London Collins 1983 0002227878 / 9780002227872 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good A.E. Barbosa, jacket art.
413 pp, 9" H. Map endpapers and decorated title page by Stephen Johnson and Raymond Benson. "They were a desperate crew: Bilbo, the buccaneer swordsman in Raffish Finery and ill-fitting boots; Black Sheba, the gorgeous deadly Queen o' the Coast Brotherhood, with her diamante rapier and Gucci accessories; Firebeard, the roaring monster of the blazing whiskers; Happy Dan Pew, eccentric French filibuster (alias Trevor O'Grady) - to say nothing of the redoubtable Calico Jack, Goliath the wooden-legged dwarf, voluptuous Anne Bonney, Akbar the Damned o' the Barbary Coast, and shiploads of cutlass-waving extras. You don't believe it? But then you've probably never heard of the amazing quest of the fabulous Madagascar Crown, undertaken by the dashing Captain Long Ben Avery, the greatest super-hero of all time, or his fraught courtship of the Admiral's lovely daughter, Lady Vanity (and her fearful perils at the hands of Pitiless Captors), or of the rascally handsome rakehell Colonel Blood, or the fiendish Don Lardo Baluna, or the rhumba-smitten Princess of the Sun in her lost jungle city, or Solomon Shafto the castaway landscape gardener or sweet star-crossed Donnal Meliflua, or - in fact, you know very little about Romantick Historie at all. Fortunately, 'The Pyrates' can set things right. For 'tis all here, look 'ee, just as you always hoped it might be - tall ships and desert islands, impossibly gallant adventurers and rakish villains, lovely ladies in distress and plunging necklines, buried treasure and Black Spots, devilish Dons and ghastly dungeons, plots, duels, escapes, savage rituals, tender romance and steaming passion - all to the accompaniement of ringing steel - ." 221 pp + section of b&w plans, photographs at rear, 8vo (9" H). B&w plans, maps, reproductions throughout text - plans and photographs at rear. "(A)n adventure tale of sweeping grandeur: the personal history of a youth who volunteered for war as a loyal subject of George II when New England rose against the French fortress of Louisburg commanding the Gulf of St. Lawrence and the approaches to Quebec and menacing the Boston fishery. The story is a romance in the true sense: it tells of the fears and awareness of a vast world opening to the mind of a young soldier and mariner early away from home and toughened by the cruelty and challenge of armed conflict and the harsh reality of the elements. The novel is based on a single page of pencil-written journal left behind by a young volunteer from Massachusetts: the author has not been able to determine the boy's name or where he lived but only that he served in Pomeroy's regiment at the capture of Louisburg in 1745. The history of Jonathan Steele unfolds as that of a God-fearing thoughtful man whose love of humanity does not blind him to the irony and tragedy of people living in difficult days, nor to their weakness or folly." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - light to moderate edge wear, small soft corner crease on front cover, spine slightly twisted.

LETTERS HOME: THE WARTIME CORRESPONDENCE AND DIARY OF JOHN EDWIN GARDINER RCAF (1919-1942)., Gardiner, John Edwin. Edited by David E. Smith.
178 Gardiner, John Edwin. Edited by David E. Smith. LETTERS HOME: THE WARTIME CORRESPONDENCE AND DIARY OF JOHN EDWIN GARDINER RCAF (1919-1942).
Regina, Saskatchewan University of Regina / Canadian Plains Research Center 2004 088977157X / 9780889771574 Soft Cover Near Fine
197 pp, 8vo (9" H). B&w photographs. "John Edwin Gardiner was the eldest son of James 'Jimmy' Gardiner, the most prominent Liberal politician of his day in western Canada. Edwin was called up by the RCAF in November 1940, received his Wings in October 1941, and travelled to England in early November 1941. On August 18, 1942, on the eve of the Dieppe Raid, Edwin wrote to his father: 'At long last we're going to take part in something big which you will read all about in the papers long before you get this letter'. Edwin Gardiner was killed when his plane went down on the following day. James Gardiner, who had lost two brothers in the First World War, had now lost his son to war. His wife, Violet, found the grief unbearable and took her own life in October 1944, yet another casualty of war. Gardiner kept all of Edwin's letters to the family. He investigated the circumstances of his son's death, visiting the graveyard at St. Aubin Le Cauf on several occasions and writing a thorough record of his findings. To the end of his life, he maintained contact with the family of the Canadian pilot who died at the same time as Edwin and with the French family who cared for their graves. John Edwin Gardiner's voice in 'Letters Home' is engaging, humorous, and intelligent. Like so many others of his generation, he exudes confidence and optimism despite the dangers of his situation. Perhaps most striking, and most touching, however, is the genuine family affection that pervades these letters."

THE BIG PUSH: A PORTRAIT OF THE BATTLE OF THE SOMME., Gardner, Brian.
179 Gardner, Brian. THE BIG PUSH: A PORTRAIT OF THE BATTLE OF THE SOMME.
Cassell, London, 1961, first edition.
177 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs, maps. "At half past seven on the morning of the first of July 1916, along a front extending for eighteen miles in the valley of the Somme, an intensive bombardment which had conti nued since dawn lifted, and fourteen divisions of British troops stumbled out of their trenches to attack the enemy. This was the climax of Sir Douglas Haig's carefully conceived plan to break the interminable deadlock of trench warfare on th e W e s t ern Front, and score a resounding and dramatic victory over the German forces. Haig's design foundered within a few hours among the defences of Fricourt, La Boisells, and Thiepval, at the appalling cost of twenty thousand British soldier s k il le d an d thirty-five thousand wounded. - But the official dates for The Battle of the Somme are from 1st July to 18th, November 1916. The 'Big Push' went on, the preliminary bombardments, the attacks, the horrifying slaughter - every single c as ual ty be ing measured in terms of individual pain, misery, and sacrifice. Belief in the High Command that prolonged shelling must reduce an entrenched enemy to inertia and impotence, easy prey for advancing infantry, died hard. It persiste d t hro ugho ut the aut umn and into the following year, when the same ghastly pattern was repeated at Passchendaele. It was not fully discredited till the full potential of armoured vehicles was realized and military concepts, bred in minor theat res of w ar be for e th e tur n of the century, were rejected. - (This book) provides a critical, and immensely readable analysis of the policy, planning, and action of the British and French armies at the Battle of the Somme, a battle in which the cas ualti es of the Briti sh arm y alone exceeded those suffered by it during the whole of the Second World War. An important historical account of a great military blunder, it is also a vivid portrait of the tragedy, the unspeakable horror, and t he co urage, which are commo n to an y war at any time, but which were peculiarly intensified in France and Flanders from 1914 to 1918." Book is lightly cocked, has light edge wear at top/bottom of spine and at corners, light wrinkling at top/bo ttom o f spine , light brow ning on edges o f text block. THE EAST INDIA COMPANY: A HISTORY., Gardner, Brian.
180 Gardner, Brian. THE EAST INDIA COMPANY: A HISTORY.
Rupert Hart-Davis, London, 1971, first edition.
319 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 024664043X B&w plates, maps. "There has never been a company like the East India Company: it ruled over nearly one-fifth of the world's population, possessed its own army and navy, its own c ivil service, and even its own church. It became the greatest military power in Asia and had a revenue larger than that of Great Britain itself. This is the story of the London merchants who, in their persistent and dogged quest for trade w i t h t h e East, struggled with misunderstanding and suspicion, rivalry with the French and the collapse of the authority of the Indian emperors. The Company brought the brilliant military conquests of men like Robert Dlive and Warren Hastings, an d th e a cq ui sitions of Sir Stamford Raffles and men who spent their entire careers in its service. There were the conquests of the Wellesleys, the intrigues and battles for power with the British government, the prejudice and envy inspired b y t he re tu rn hom e o f wealthy retired employees, and the compromise which ended in the appointment of government selected Governors-General.
