MILITARY AIRCRAFT MARKINGS & PROFILES., Wheeler, Barry C.
163 Wheeler, Barry C. MILITARY AIRCRAFT MARKINGS & PROFILES.
Hamlyn, London, 1990, first edition.
192 pp, 4to (12" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0600569764 "Featuring 140 aircraft and over 850 full colour illustrations and photographs, this book traces the story of military aircraft markings and camouflage from World War I to the present day. Each illustration has been carefully selected to show how the markings and colour schemes have evolved, influenced by the aircraft's military role and mission capability. Here you will find some of the world's most famous fighting mach i n e s , from the Avro 504 to the Panavia Tornado and the Fokker DR1 to the McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle. There are transports like the Lockheed C-130 as well as helicopters such as Sikorsky's UH-60 Black Hawk. All are shown in a variety of mili ta ry c ol ou r schemes. The fighter role in the early years often combined bomber and reconnaissance tasks. It was only later the specific function of an aircraft in relation to its environment became an issue. The bomber mission - both night and da y - pr odu ce d some subtle changes of pattern over the years, as did the interdiction role. Over the sea, maritime aircraft also needed to be given schemes relative to their areas of operation. Special colour schemes are also illustrated and dis cuss ed i nclu din g the 'Tiger Meet' together with the special operations camouflage, often applied for a military exercise or air show." 164 Whilehead, William. Edited by Terence Macartney-Filgate. DIEPPE 1942: ECHOES OF DISASTER.
Toronto Personal Library / Nelson 1979 0176007822 / 9780176007829 Hard Cover Very Good Good-
192 pp, small 4to (10 1/2" H). Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, maps, drawings. "In the earliest morning hours of August 19, 1942, an armada of almost 250 Allied vessels left southern England , carrying over 6,000 troops and sixty tanks towards a dawn assault on the German-occupied port of Dieppe, just across the English Channel. Seventy squadrons of fighters and bombers, flown by pilots of eight nations, provided air cover for this reconnaissance-in-force whose mission was to occupy Dieppe and hold it for a matter of hours before withdrawing. Ever since, the questions have gone on. How did such a massive, short-lived operation come about, what did it accomplish and why was it such a bitter, costly failure? The force consisted of several hundred British commandos and marines, 50 U.S. Rangers, some two dozen Free French commandos and almost 5,000 Canadian soldiers. German casualties were less than 600; Allied casualties were almost 4,000." Light edge wear to boards, very light browning to edges of textblock, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has moderate rubbing causing some color fading - mainly on rear panel, small chip at top of spine, tear at top of front flap-fold, a few tiny edge tears, light edge wrinkling, a few faint foxing marks on inside surface, "As seen on CBC-TV" label on front panel.
