LOVE AND THE SPANISH., Epton, Nina.
163 Epton, Nina. LOVE AND THE SPANISH.
London Cassell 1961 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good- B.S. Biro, dust jacket illustration.
216 pp, 8 3/4" H. B&w illustrations. "Spain is a country of Magdalenes and repentant Don Juans as well as of gay sinners. This sums up concisely and colourfully - as far as love can ever be summed up - what must be considered as the Spanish attitude to love both in the past and indeed at the present time, for it has changed remarkably little over the centuries, and only now has enlightened thought to some extent begun to free love from strangling conventions and taboos. This country has produced Don Juan the greatest lover of all time, one of the most passionate and violent of all love stories in 'Carmen', the Inquisition with its scenes of extreme punishment and tortured flesh, the charming court-ship rites like the Fiesta de San Antonio, and the tragic genius of Lorca, preoccupied with beauty and death. How is it possible to reconcile the passionate guitar-playing majo with the cold, unyielding figure of the Inquisitor? Miss Epton gives us the answer - no easy achievement, for the Spaniards have never been inclined to communicate personal feelings about love either in their art or in their literature, and this reticence and pride still persists. She has met every type of Spaniard, from intellectuals to prostitutes, from students to doctors, and she has questioned them tactfully but ruthlessly. As a result, she has laid bare the myth of Romantic Spain, revealing the fundamental difference between Galicia, more tolerant of human weakness, and the severer South, which is one of the most striking character-istics of love in Spain." Light fading to top/bottom edges of spine. Dust jacket has some very light edge wrinkling, light browning on spine and very light on flap-folds, very light soiling on rear panel.

John Erskine (1879-1951) taught at Columbia University from 1909-1937 and used it as the background for this novel about "the 'new' younger generation", which was made into a film in the year it was published. "What happens when you're a freshman and you want to marry the loveliest girl in the world (also a freshman) but have only $4.21 to last out the month? What Alec does is to take Mimi to breakfast - and put off the wedding for the next check from home. But in time the checks from home stop coming. Alec discovers there is a personal depression. He must pay his way through. By unanimous protest of his fraternity, he is forced to give up the saxophone and he takes on dishwashing for a livelihood. While a substitute waiter he suffers a terrible blow to his pride. Gladys, the college widow, 1934 model, gets him in an awful jam. Tragedy touches him closely in disasters nobly borne by student and faculty friends. Gradually a courage shows through that is more than youthful rebellion, a fineness that is not cocksure. Alec begins to grow up." Indianapolis Bobbs-Merrill 1931 Hard Cover Very Good - Poor Inscribed By Author
347 pp, 8 1/8" H. Black cloth with red lettering and decorative borders on spine and front board, top edge stained red. Inscribed on front free endpaper: "For George Atkins - / old friend - / as a poor return for the / best apples I've met in / an age! / John Erskine / January, 1932 - ". "The car was moving fast but not too fast. You couldn't blame the driver. A tire exploded - . Before Ormer saw his friends again he stood before a Gate and heard the amazing dictum that scared him back to life: neither right nor wrong counts, but only their completion. The man alone is damned who fails to fulfil his intentions. But - cheating his partner. Seducing a girl. These were among the things that Ormer had begun. Now with his own salvation at stake he must return to complete them. In the twenty years that had passed, the partner had become the president of a powerful bank, the girl had become the wife of his faithful friend. And he knew he must return to face the Figure at the Gate. Most men and women carry about with them regrets vague or clearly articulated for the things they have not done. As we grow older we regret even the prudence which kept us from mistakes. Even from mistakes, we begin to feel, we might have learned more fully to live. This common experience is dramatized (here). Along with the regret for neglected opportunities to live goes usually a wish that we might return to past hours and complete what we left unfinished. Here is the story of a man who tried to make such a repetition of his life." Light toning to margins of pages; a few tiny foxing marks on preliminary pages, on rear pastesdown and on edges of text block; light edge wear/rubbing; wrinkling at top/bottom of spine; light corner bumps and two small bumps at bottom edge of front board; light browning to fore-edge and bottom of text block. Dust jacket has edge wear with small chips, tears and creases - tears have old tape repairs on inside surface; browning on spine; two small ink scribbles and small water stain on front panel; light soiling and rubbing; now protected in a mylar sleeve.

BATTLES WITH MODEL SOLDIERS., Featherstone, Donald.
169 Featherstone, Donald. BATTLES WITH MODEL SOLDIERS.
Newton Abbot David & Charles 1972 0715349252 / 9780715349250 Second Impression. Hard Cover Very Good Good+ W.R.F. Jenkinson.
215 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H). B&w illustrations. "Once aptly described as 'chess with a thousand pieces', wargaming can be made as complicated and elaborate as desired, or so simple that even young children can take part. This book - the ideal introduction to the hobby - explains what wargaming is all about, how armies can be assembled and how, on any reasonably-sized table, realistic engagements can be fought by tactical manoeuvring. The basic rules by which forces are moved and casualties assessed are explained, there is practical advice on making one's own soldiers and on conversions, and guidance on how to prepare and lay out realistic battlefield scenes. Another great attraction of the wargaming hobby is the research it invites into famous campaigns of the past, and not the least valuable part of this book is its brief survey of warfare from earliest times to the present day. Here the military tactics of each period are considered, together with the role of the different types of soldiers and their weapons, and there is an extensive bibliography to facilitate research into specific periods of military history." Very small bump at top edge of front board, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, tiny light stain on fore-edge of text block. Dust jacket has been price-clipped, has light edge wear/wrinkling, a few tiny chips, one small tear archivally taped, light browning at inside edges.

"(O)ffers a colourful and thoroughly researched account of Canada's silent service, from its unexpected inauguration in British Columbia on the first day of the Great War to its uncertain future today. After describing the activities of the submarine service during and after World War I, (the author) details the careers of the Canadians who served with distinction in British submarines in all theatres of World War II. She goes on to examine the modern era, from the rebirth of the service in the 1960s to the present, and provides little-known information about the controversial Conservative initiative for nuclear-powered submarines in 1987. London Weidenfeld and Nicolson 1988 0297793934 / 9780297793939 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
184 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). B&w illustrations. "From 1740 to 1832, freshly buried corpses were dug up and surreptitiously hawked to surgeons and anatomists in London and Edinburgh to dissect for research and teaching purposes. The resurrection trade brought together Fellows of the Royal Society and slum-dwelling criminals in an unholy alliance. By the beginning of the nineteenth century, the illicit trade had become one of London's most efficiently organized departments of crime, with gang-leader Ben Crouch securing a virtual monopoly of delivery to half the teaching hospitals. In Scotland, several surgeons of great eminence loved the adventure of association with desperadoes and willingly accompanied them on their nocturnal excavations. Not surprisingly, there was great public consternation about the activities of the bodysnatchers, but it was only when Burke and Hare introduced murder as a means of acquiring 'subjects' that the authorities acted to eradicate the ghoulish practice. Martin Fido's book is an enthralling study of a strange byway of criminal low life. It provides the first full and accurate accounts of murderers Helen Torrence and Jean Waldie, Bishop and Head and El iza Ross. With sketches of the great surgeons who encouraged and sought to control the trade, 'Bodysnatchers' will interest many in the medical profession and social historians as well as devotees of the true crime genre." TIAN WEN: A CHINESE BOOK OF ORIGINS., Field, Stephen, translator. Calligraphy by T.C. Ma.
173 Field, Stephen, translator. Calligraphy by T.C. Ma. TIAN WEN: A CHINESE BOOK OF ORIGINS.
New Directions, New York, 1986, first edition.
123 pp, 8vo (8 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0811210103 "Relatively unknown in the West, (this book) is a fascinating, though often baffling, archaic collection of 186 'questions' about the origins of life and the meaning of a wide vari ety of happenings startling and mundane, earthly and celestial. Because the poem has no single narrative thread, the most informed speculation posits group authorship by a number of roving Taoist scholars, each contributing riddles about t h e h i s t o r y and legends of his own province as well as ironically posed inquiries into the nature of the universe. The enigmatic and sometimes Sphinxlike conundrums may have been originally intended for debate - to give the popular and promi ne nt di al ec ti ci an s of over 2,300 years ago a tool for honing their convoluted responses. But however the poem took on its present shape and content, it remains the single most comprehensive catalogue of ancient Chinese mythology and pre-Imp eri al l ege nd in exi ste nce . This translation....combines sound scholarship with an artful grace to produce the 186 questions in couplets that both tease and enchant. In addition to a historical introduction that clearly explains what is known and no t know n a bou t th e po em, Field provides extensive notes to help the English-speaking reader understand the basic Chinese myths alluded to in the questions." The poem is presented in Chinese 'li-shi' script opposite the English text. P revio us o wn er's chop (st amp p n hal f-ti tle page, tiny bump to top edge of both boards. THE IAMBICS OF NEWFOUNDLAND: NOTES FROM AN UNKNOWN SHORE., Finch, Robert.
175 Finch, Robert. THE IAMBICS OF NEWFOUNDLAND: NOTES FROM AN UNKNOWN SHORE.
New York Counterpoint 2007 158243154X / 9781582431543 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
270 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). "After spending the greater part of a decade traveling around the island of Newfoundland, at 'the edge of North America', beloved nature writer and host of an NPR radio series Robert Finch chronicles the people, geography, and wildlife of this remote and lovely place. From the shear cliffs of Cape Spear overlooking the Atlantic, the beaches of Sandy Cove (about eight miles by road from Squid Tickle), the steep streets of St. John's, and the moss-covered tundra of the southern coast, Finch carefully collects the intimate stories of birds and moose and foxes - and the people who share their space. He evokes an untrammeled landscape of raw beauty even as he tells a tale of economic hardship, with the local cod fisheries deplete and very little industry to replace it. Finch's ear is finely attuned to the vernaclar of Newfoundlander's stories; he revels in the particular cadences and unexpected movement of their tales. With a boundless curiosity, a profound appreciation for the beauty of everyday life and prose as hospitable and full of good humor as the people he encounters, Finch brings alive a wide array of characters - fishermen, hunters and hitchhikers, newcomers and old timers - and an island tucked between provinces, languages, and cultures, a land of ancient hardship and stirring beauty." Winnipeg, MB Blizzard 2000 0921368984 / 9780921368984 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Near Fine
79 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). "In this daring and original play, Timothy Findley brings together none other than William Shakespeare and the formidable Virgin Queen, Elizabeth I. What makes a man a man and a woman a woman? Late at night on the eve of her former lover's execution, this is the very question Queen Elizabeth wrestles with as she descends to the stable lodgings of Shakespeare's players. Her unexpected arrival disturbs the playwright and his actors and provokes the rapier-sharp, haughty indifference of Ned, Shakespeare's genius performer of women's roles - himself now aged, ill and facing his mortality. In their vitriolic confrontation, the actor, the playwright, and the queen come to startling revelations about sex, identity, humanity, and love." Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling.

New York Richardson & Steirman 1987 09319334200 First American Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good
474 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w photographs. "In 1945 seven men, once among the most powerful on earth, were locked away in a vast prison built to hold more than 600 inmates, surrounded by every conceivable escape-proof precaution. Tried and convicted for attempting to enslave the world, they were the last of what Winston Churchill had called 'the Hitler gang'. Their sentences, meted out by the court at Nuremberg, represented a gigantic step forward in the recognition of international justice. They stood condemned for their part in a campaign of organized cruelty such as history had never seen before. (This book) is the outcome of years of dedicated research. It examines the seven men themselves - their private lives, their motivation, their machinations inside Spandau, their relationships with each other and their attitudes to their crimes. Built up from conversations with their families, lawyers, friends and enemies, and, in some cases, the men themselves, from visits to Berlin made with their wives, from letters written in prison, both authorized and smuggled, and from authentic conversations between the prisoners, this aspect of the book is in itself a gripping study of human corruption. Equally extraordinary are the book's revelations about the hitherto secret diplomatic and political infighting that went on between the four Powers over the welfare and fate of the seven prisoners. The events and intrigues surrounding the jail are as spellbinding as those that occurred inside." Very minor foxing on top of text block. Dust jacket has light rubbing, tiny foxing marks at top inside edge, light browning at top of flaps, one 1" tear at bottom of rear flap-fold - archivally taped.

135 pp, large 8vo (9 7/8" H). B&w photographs, drawings, reproductions, plans. "(D)eals with the storming of Badajoz, an epic action of the Peninsular War, which involved Wellington's infantry in some of the most savage hand-to-hand fighting of the whole Peninsular period. At appalling cost, in a nightmare battle which lasted throughout the night of the 6th April 1812, they hacked their way over the bodies of their dead and through the forbidding medieval walls, which were held with great courage and skill by a brave French and German garrison. Having successfully stormed the breaches, the battle-crazed army went berserk and the horrors of the sacking which followed, as much as the sublime courage of the attackers, have passed into legend. This account, drawn wholly from the vivid descriptions of the officers and common soldiers who fought at Badajoz, is the first to be written exclusively about the siege, the storming, and the shocking events which followed."
