GIRLS GROWING UP IN LATE VICTORIAN AND EDWARDIAN ENGLAND., Dyhouse, Carol.
161 Dyhouse, Carol. GIRLS GROWING UP IN LATE VICTORIAN AND EDWARDIAN ENGLAND.
Routledge & Kegan Paul, London, 1981, first edition.
224 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 071000821X "Girls learn about 'femininity' from childhood onwards, first through their relationships with the family, and later from their teachers and peers. Using sources which vary from diaries to Inspector's reports, Carol Dyhouse studies the socialization of middle- and working-class girls in late-Victorian and early-Edwardian England. She traces the ways in which schooling at all social levels at this time tended to r e i n f o r c e lessons in the sexual division of labour and patterns of authority between men and women, which girls had already learned at home. In Elementary Schools, social anxieties about 'National Efficiency', high infant-mortality figures a nd a d ec li ni ng b i rth-rate helped to shape the curriculum offered to working-class girls through the period 1870-1920. The author then focuses on the emergence of a social psychology of adolescent girlhood in the early-twentieth century wit h i ts edu cat ion al imp lic at ions. Finally, she examines the relationship between feminism and girls' education through the period studied." Small faint area of soiling on fornt board. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bott om o f s pine and fla p-f olds , fa din g to spine color - lettering very legible, blank label on front flap, minor rubbing. EXPATRIATES AND PATRIOTS: AMERICAN ARTISTS, SCHOLARS, AND WRITERS IN EUROPE., Earnest, Ernest.
162 Earnest, Ernest. EXPATRIATES AND PATRIOTS: AMERICAN ARTISTS, SCHOLARS, AND WRITERS IN EUROPE.
Duke University Press, Durham, North Carolina, 1968, first edition.
310 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. "A considerable amount of our literary and social criticism has been based on the premise that during much of our history the United States has been inhospitable to the intellectual and the a rtist. The term 'exile' has been used frequently and Henry James has been pictured as the prime victim. The present study is a detailed examination of a selected number of representative writers, artists, and intellectuals who spent a con s i d e r a b l e amount of time abroad. Its purpose is to determine the extent to which they were 'exiled', and especially to learn what they had to say about the contrast between the American and European scenes....Those discussed are Irving, Ti ck no r, B an cr of t, C ogswell, Cooper, Morse, Greenough, Powers, Allston, Story, Fuller, Hawthorne, James, Frederic, and Wharton. In a special chapter devoted to the unique problems of the expatriates of the 1920's, such figures as Stein, Hemi ngw ay, Cr owl ey, Fi tzg era ld, and the Crosbys are included...." 163 Easton, Alan. Foreword by Rear-Admiral K.L. Dyer. 50 NORTH: AN ATLANTIC BATTLEGROUND. (CANADA'S ATLANTIC BATTLEGROUND.)
Toronto Ryerson Press 1963 First Edition. Hard Cover Very Good Fair Inscribed By Author
287 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H). Inscribed on front free endpaper: "Archie Whelan / This describes a very different / environment in which you / & I worked together, but I / hope you'll like reading about it. / Your old friend / Alan Easton. / March 1963." B&w illustrations. "In this exciting book, Lieutenant-Commander Alan Easton of the Royal Canadian Navy Reserve tells of his experiences during the Second World War. The first ship he commanded was a corvette with faulty engines. His second corvette saw convoy action and battled both German U-boats and bad weather. Then Easton was given command of a destroyer which saw action in the English Channel on the day of the Normandy invasion. Easton gives a thrilling and detailed account of this successful naval engagement. But '50 North' is as much concerned with everyday life on board small warships as it is with the Atlantic battle as a whole. For this reason (it) is the first Canadian book of its kind. Easton is able to portray with vividness the seamen under him, their minor quarrels as well as the more important problems which occasionally develop between the crew and the commanding officers." Very light browning to edges of text block, small bump to top of front hinge, minor erinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has old tape repairs for large and small tears with creases, a few small edge chips, light browning, rubbing and soiling - mainly on rear panel, now protected in a mylar sleeve.

Bloodlist - 200 pp, 1990 1st printing, ISBN 0441067956 - "I've always had a weak spot for strange ladies. One very beautiful girl had even warned me that she was - get this - a vampire. But did I listen? No. Well, before you know it, I'm being chased by an ugly thug with a gun, and a bullet blasts its way through my back, and - believe it or not - nothing happened. I survived! How? You guessed it. I, Jack Fleming, ace reporter, had been transformed into - a vampire! Which has its advantages. You never die, you never grow old, you sleep all day, and best of all - you can hunt down your own murderer." Book 2. Lifeblood - 202 pp, 1990 5th printing, ISBN 0441847765 - "As nosferatu go, I'm basically a nice guy. Sure, I need a little blood now and then, but I never meant to hurt anyone. Too bad some people don't feel the same about me. Now I've got a bunch of crazy vampire-hunters on my trail, armed with crosses, silver bullets, and sharp wooden stakes. How did they find out about me? Why are they - pardon the expression - out for my blood? I don't know, but I'm going to get some answers even if it kills me - again." Book 3. Bloodcircle - 202 pp, 1990 6th printing, ISBN 0441067174 - "As a vampire, I have a number of handy skills - I can hypnotize mortals, walk through walls, and shrug off bullets like insults. The one thing I haven't been able to manage, so far, is to find the woman who made me what I am. Until now. Her trail has led me to the palatial estate of a wealthy widow - and a two hundred-year-old gigolo with a taste for young blood. He claims not to know where my long-lost lady is - or who is trying to kill me - but then again, you can never trust a vampire." Book 4. Art in the Blood - 195 pp, 1991 1st printing, ISBN 0441859453 - "(W)hen the career of a talented young artist is fatally cut short, I know I won't sleep easy in my coffin until I find the killer. But the world of high art - with its big money, bigger egos, and expensive forgeries - makes even bloodsucking seem simple. And safer. Dead artists can live forever. An undead detective may not be so lucky - ." Book 5. Fire in theBlood - 198 pp, 1991 3rd printing, ISBN 0441859451 - "Even the dead have to work for a living. This time, a priceless heirloom bracelet's been stolen from the wealthy Sebastian Pierece. And guess who's been hired to find it? Pierce has plenty of hard cash, a soft heart - and a hot-blooded daughter named Marian. Marian has big eyes for yours truly - and a very jealous boyfriend. And me? I have a night job I can really sink my teeth into." Book 6. Blood on the Water - 199 pp, 1992 2nd printing, ISBN 044185947X - "There's a new crime boss in town and he's gunning for a vampire. So are the police. Lucky me. What's worse, my thirst for the red stuff is getting out of control. I'm not sure what scares me mroe: the mob - or the darkness gnawing at my gut. When Chicago gets this hot, even a vampire can get burned." Book 7. A Chill in the Blood - 327 pp, 1999 1st PB printing, ISBN 0441006272 - "(B)eing a vampire with morals is no midnight stroll on the streets of post-prohibition Chicago. In the city of sin, the gangs still rule - and they're on the brink of an all-out war. Neither crooks nor cops care how much blood, innocent or otherwise, flows during the fight. But Jack does. Caught between the local hoods and the boys from New York, Jack has to stop the battle before it starts. But how much of his remaining humanity will he have to give up to do it?" Book 9. Lady Crymsyn - 410 pp, 2001 1st PB printing, ISBN 0441008739 - "(Jack) has made a good bit of money cleaning up the streets of post-prohibition Chicago - enough to realize his long-time dream of owning a nightclub where a man can get a legal drink, and where Jack's songbird girlfriend can headline the floor show. But renovations on the speakeasy come to a crashing halt when workmen discover the skeletal remains of a woman's body - clad in a distinctive red dress - walled up in the basement. Jack may have become a creature of the night, but he's still a man with a strong sense of justice. And he won't rest until he finds out who killed the lady in red - even if it means resurrecting secrets the mob would kill to keep buried." Plus: Quincey Morris, Vampire - 336 pp, Baen Publishing 2001 first printing, ISBN 0671319844 - "Rough and ready Texan Quincey Morris thrust his Bowie knife into Dracula's heart, bringing an end to the quintessential battle between the living and the Un-Dead. Waking to the night, surrounded by ravenous wolves, he finds himself plunged into his greates adventure yet: life beyond life - as a vampire. To survive, he must quickly adapt to his dark change. At the hands of his savage mentor it's a hard, painful process, but Quincey is determined to escape the wilderness and return to his grieving friends. LOVE AND THE SPANISH., Epton, Nina.
170 Epton, Nina. LOVE AND THE SPANISH.
London Cassell 1961 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good- B.S. Biro, dust jacket illustration.
216 pp, 8 3/4" H. B&w illustrations. "Spain is a country of Magdalenes and repentant Don Juans as well as of gay sinners. This sums up concisely and colourfully - as far as love can ever be summed up - what must be considered as the Spanish attitude to love both in the past and indeed at the present time, for it has changed remarkably little over the centuries, and only now has enlightened thought to some extent begun to free love from strangling conventions and taboos. This country has produced Don Juan the greatest lover of all time, one of the most passionate and violent of all love stories in 'Carmen', the Inquisition with its scenes of extreme punishment and tortured flesh, the charming court-ship rites like the Fiesta de San Antonio, and the tragic genius of Lorca, preoccupied with beauty and death. How is it possible to reconcile the passionate guitar-playing majo with the cold, unyielding figure of the Inquisitor? Miss Epton gives us the answer - no easy achievement, for the Spaniards have never been inclined to communicate personal feelings about love either in their art or in their literature, and this reticence and pride still persists. She has met every type of Spaniard, from intellectuals to prostitutes, from students to doctors, and she has questioned them tactfully but ruthlessly. As a result, she has laid bare the myth of Romantic Spain, revealing the fundamental difference between Galicia, more tolerant of human weakness, and the severer South, which is one of the most striking character-istics of love in Spain." Light fading to top/bottom edges of spine. Dust jacket has some very light edge wrinkling, light browning on spine and very light on flap-folds, very light soiling on rear panel.

John Erskine (1879-1951) taught at Columbia University from 1909-1937 and used it as the background for this novel about "the 'new' younger generation", which was made into a film in the year it was published. Inscribed on front free endpaper: "For George Atkins - / old friend - / as a poor return for the / best apples I've met in / an age! / John Erskine / January, 1932 - ". "The car was moving fast but not too fast. You couldn't blame the driver. A tire exploded - . Before Ormer saw his friends again he stood before a Gate and heard the amazing dictum that scared him back to life: neither right nor wrong counts, but only their completion. The man alone is damned who fails to fulfil his intentions. But - cheating his partner. Seducing a girl. These were among the things that Ormer had begun. Now with his own salvation at stake he must return to complete them. In the twenty years that had passed, the partner had become the president of a powerful bank, the girl had become the wife of his faithful friend. And he knew he must return to face the Figure at the Gate. Most men and women carry about with them regrets vague or clearly articulated for the things they have not done. As we grow older we regret even the prudence which kept us from mistakes. Even from mistakes, we begin to feel, we might have learned more fully to live. This common experience is dramatized (here). Along with the regret for neglected opportunities to live goes usually a wish that we might return to past hours and complete what we left unfinished. Here is the story of a man who tried to make such a repetition of his life." 215 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H). B&w illustrations. "Once aptly described as 'chess with a thousand pieces', wargaming can be made as complicated and elaborate as desired, or so simple that even young children can take part. This book - the ideal introduction to the hobby - explains what wargaming is all about, how armies can be assembled and how, on any reasonably-sized table, realistic engagements can be fought by tactical manoeuvring. The basic rules by which forces are moved and casualties assessed are explained, there is practical advice on making one's own soldiers and on conversions, and guidance on how to prepare and lay out realistic battlefield scenes. Another great attraction of the wargaming hobby is the research it invites into famous campaigns of the past, and not the least valuable part of this book is its brief survey of warfare from earliest times to the present day. Here the military tactics of each period are considered, together with the role of the different types of soldiers and their weapons, and there is an extensive bibliography to facilitate research into specific periods of military history." Very small bump at top edge of front board, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, tiny light stain on fore-edge of text block. Dust jacket has been price-clipped, has light edge wear/wrinkling, a few tiny chips, one small tear archivally taped, light browning at inside edges.

364 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w photos, maps. "(O)ffers a colourful and thoroughly researched account of Canada's silent service, from its unexpected inauguration in British Columbia on the first day of the Great War to its uncertain future today. After describing the activities of the submarine service during and after World War I, (the author) details the careers of the Canadians who served with distinction in British submarines in all theatres of World War II. She goes on to examine the modern era, from the rebirth of the service in the 1960s to the present, and provides little-known information about the controversial Conservative initiative for nuclear-powered submarines in 1987. Above all, this vivid account celebrates the individuals who dedicated and in some instances gave their lives to Canada's submarine service." One tiny edge bump. Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling, minor rubbing, tiny dent on front panel.

BODYSNATCHERS: A HISTORY OF THE RESURRECTIONISTS 1742-1832., Fido, Martin.
180 Fido, Martin. BODYSNATCHERS: A HISTORY OF THE RESURRECTIONISTS 1742-1832.
Weidenfeld and Nicolson, London, 1988.
184 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0297793934 B&w illustrations. "From 1740 to 1832, freshly buried corpses were dug up and surreptitiously hawked to surgeons and anatomists in London and Edinburgh to dissect for research and teaching purposes. The resurrection trade brought together Fellows of the Royal Society and slum-dwelling criminals in an unholy alliance. By the beginning of the nineteenth century, the illicit trade had become one of London's most effic i e n t l y o rganized departments of crime, with gang-leader Ben Crouch securing a virtual monopoly of delivery to half the teaching hospitals. In Scotland, several surgeons of great eminence loved the adventure of association with desperadoes and w il li ng ly a c co mpanied them on their nocturnal excavations. Not surprisingly, there was great public consternation about the activities of the bodysnatchers, but it was only when Burke and Hare introduced murder as a means of acquiring 'sub jec ts' th at the au th ori ties acted to eradicate the ghoulish practice. Martin Fido's book is an enthralling study of a strange byway of criminal low life. It provides the first full and accurate accounts of murderers Helen Torrence and Jean Wald ie, Bish op and Head an d El iza Ross. With sketches of the great surgeons who encouraged and sought to control the trade, 'Bodysnatchers' will interest many in the medical profession and social historians as well as devotees of the true crim e gen re."
