163 Easton, Alan. Foreword by Rear-Admiral K.L. Dyer. 50 NORTH: AN ATLANTIC BATTLEGROUND. (CANADA'S ATLANTIC BATTLEGROUND.)
Toronto Ryerson Press 1963 First Edition. Hard Cover Very Good Fair Inscribed By Author
287 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H). Inscribed on front free endpaper: "Archie Whelan / This describes a very different / environment in which you / & I worked together, but I / hope you'll like reading about it. / Your old friend / Alan Easton. / March 1963." B&w illustrations. "In this exciting book, Lieutenant-Commander Alan Easton of the Royal Canadian Navy Reserve tells of his experiences during the Second World War. The first ship he commanded was a corvette with faulty engines. His second corvette saw convoy action and battled both German U-boats and bad weather. Then Easton was given command of a destroyer which saw action in the English Channel on the day of the Normandy invasion. Easton gives a thrilling and detailed account of this successful naval engagement. But '50 North' is as much concerned with everyday life on board small warships as it is with the Atlantic battle as a whole. For this reason (it) is the first Canadian book of its kind. Easton is able to portray with vividness the seamen under him, their minor quarrels as well as the more important problems which occasionally develop between the crew and the commanding officers." Very light browning to edges of text block, small bump to top of front hinge, minor erinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has old tape repairs for large and small tears with creases, a few small edge chips, light browning, rubbing and soiling - mainly on rear panel, now protected in a mylar sleeve.

DONITZ AND THE WOLF PACKS., Edwards, Bernard.
164 Edwards, Bernard. DONITZ AND THE WOLF PACKS.
London Brockhampton 1999 1860199275 / 9781860199271 Reprint. Hard Cover Very Good+ Near Fine
240 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). B&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "The U-boat, the submarine of the German Navy, was a hidden predator, which would steal up on its prey out of sight beneath the waves. The tactics were much like the wild wolf of the forest, whose grey camouflage would keep it out of sight until it chose to attack. Just as the wolf was even more effective when it roamed in groups, cornering its quarry before catching it, so Admiral Karl Donitz chose to use the grey hulls of his submarines in packs - 'wolf packs'. This simple yet stunningly successful tactic came very close to winning the Battle of the Atlantic and inflicted huge losses of Allied merchant and naval vessels and their crews. With the packs dispersing after an attack as quickly as they had gathered for it, defence against the strategy was fraught with difficulty and only the U-boats' inability to wage their warfare without surfacing gave the Allies a chance of fighting back. In this empathetic and deeply researched volume, (the author) delves beneath the myths and legends of submarinal action and convoy protection to discuss the realities of wolf pack deployment. He explains what caused Donitz to employ the plan and how close his scheme came to destroying Allied resistance. It is an account of a remarkable naval tactic, cunningly used with great brutality by men who themselves withstood awesome deprivation, securing the adulation of their nation." Edge crease at top corner of last two pages, minor rubbing. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling.

VICTORY IN THE ST. LAWRENCE: CANADA'S UNKNOWN WAR., Essex, James W.
170 Essex, James W. VICTORY IN THE ST. LAWRENCE: CANADA'S UNKNOWN WAR.
Erin, Ontario Boston Mills Press 1984 0919822568 / 9780919822566 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good
160 pp, 11 1/4" H. Map endpapers (showing locations of ships torpedoed in Gulf and River of St. Lawrence and Canada's Coastal Waters), b&w photographs, drawings. "The sailor next to me reached into his topcoat pocket and hurriedly proferred a crumpled photograph. I recognized it as the military funeral of 1942 at the tiny Anglican Church just down the road. It was the burial of a seaman from the HMCS 'Charlottetown', one of several who had been rescued, only to die of wounds later. He was killed in Canada by the Nazis. This book in a real sense, then, is his story and the story of hundreds of others who perished because of the German U-boats in the St. Lawrence. As Cmdr. George Bernard, Naval Officer in Command, Gaspe from 1943 to the war's end said in later years: 'In 1942, marauding U-Boats entered the Gulf of St. Lawrence and did a great deal of damage. They roamed the Gulf and River St. Lawrence at will and were seldom opposed. They sank Canadian warships and valuable merchant vessels almost with impunity.' According to Bernard, it was for this reason that Canadian authorities played down the episode. They were prepared to accept the consequences because warships which might have attacked the U-boats invading our inland waters were wanted more urgently elsewhere. This was 'Victory in the St. Lawrence' - initially for the German U-boat: Canada's turn would come next. But what happened to both remained locked in the memories of the participants only now being revealed long years after the war ended. This was 'Canada's Unknown War'." Minor wrinkle at top of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, minor rubbing.

171 Ethell, Jeffrey, editor. Text by General Charles E. "Chuck" Yeager and Colonel Clarence E. "Bud" Anderson. THERE ONCE WAS A WAR: THE COLLECTED COLOR PHOTOGRAPHY OF WORLD WAR II. FEATURING THE JEFFREY ETHELL COLLECTION OF WORLD WAR II COLOR PHOTOGRAPHY.
Viking Studio, New York, 1995, first edition.
224 pp, 4to (11 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0670860441 "The most important historical event of the 20th century was a war that seemed to be fought in black-and-white. Our collective memory of the years 1941-1945 exists in monochrome, because that was the way most of us saw it - and continue to see it - in the films and still pictures of the day. Color film for motion pictures and still cameras was readily available then, but was not in wide use because of its fragility and t h e difficulties of developing it. But there were enough hardy photographic pioneers around in 1941 to take the new color film to war, and their pictures, surviving beautifully to this day, show us a very different world than the one we see in o ld n ew sreels. At first glance these images are a bit startling; we are not used to seeing the people, places, and events of the early 1940s in living color. But in due time these pictures seem utterly right, and in fact bring World War II int o mor e r eco gnizable form, more comfortable for modern eyes. Here, then, is a colorful recollection of World War II in over 200 photographs taken, for the most part, by amateur lensmen - ordinary soldiers, sailors, and airmen who wanted to record a nd p rese rve their time in the largest conflict in world history." BRIDGES OF BATTLE: FAMOUS BATTLEFIELD ACTIONS AT BRIDGES AND RIVER CROSSINGS., Featherstone, Donald.
176 Featherstone, Donald. BRIDGES OF BATTLE: FAMOUS BATTLEFIELD ACTIONS AT BRIDGES AND RIVER CROSSINGS.
London Arms and Armour 1998 1854094491 / 9781854094490 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
256 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). B&w plates. "From more than 2,000 years of military history, (the author) has selected some one hundred examples of battles centred on river crossings. They range in size fom small-scale actions such as the battle for Powick Bridge in the early months of the English Civil War to massive, army-scale operations including the final crossing of the Rhine at Remagen during the Second World War. One of the biggest battles during the Napoleonic Wars - indeed, the biggest battle to that date with more than 300,000 men in combat - was fought across the Danube in 1809, culminating in the battle of Wagram. Later, as Napoleon's fortunes began to ebb, there took place the desperate and tragic crossing of the Berezina in 1812 when Napoleon's depleted army, retreating from Moscow, fought to cross the freezing river to escape the pursuing and encirling Russians and the hell of a Russian winter. The American Civil War also provides many examples of battles for river crossings, such as First Bull Run, the opening engagement of the war, the fight for Burnside's Bridge at Antietam and the Battle of the Big Black River during the riverine campaign for Vicksburg. Other, often lesser-known, actions are also to be found in this book, including tales of desperate courage from the Indian Mutiny and other British colonial wars. The range of contributions, including expert analyses and eyewitness accounts often enables the reader to see both sides of the story - those of the defender and the attacker - and to compare battles fought in similar circumstances, but with very different weapons, across the centuries." A few faint scuffs on the front board. Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling, one small edge tear archivally taped.

252 pp, 8 1/2" H. B&w photographs, maps. "On Christmas Day 1941, Hong Kong, 'the Gibraltar of the Orient', crumbled under the massive onslaught of crack Japanese invasion troops. The Winnipeg Grenadiers and the Royal Rifles of Canada, ill equipped and unblooded, fought side by side with four other British Commonwealth units to defend the Crown colony. For eighteen days, the heavily outnumbered soldiers surpassed all expectations, winning lasting honour on the battlefield before being marched off to spend four and a half years in Japanese prison camps. They had endured constant air strikes, artillery barrages, vicious assaults, and hand-to-hand combat. Their heroic sacrifice is made all the more tragic when one realizes that, from the start, they were considered expendable. Base on interviews with survivors of the battle and the POW cages, (this) is a powerful tale of human courage in the face of impossible odds." Light wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket is price-clipped, has light to moderate edge wear at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, several small tears archivally taped, light water marks on lower inside of flap-folds, light fading to spine colour.

LONG KNIVES AND SHORT MEMORIES: THE SPANDAU PRISON STORY., Fishman, Jack.
180 Fishman, Jack. LONG KNIVES AND SHORT MEMORIES: THE SPANDAU PRISON STORY.
Richardson & Steirman, New York, 1987, first American edition.
474 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 09319334200 B&w photographs. "In 1945 seven men, once among the most powerful on earth, were locked away in a vast prison built to hold more than 600 inmates, surrounded by every conce ivable escape-proof precaution. Tried and convicted for attempting to enslave the world, they were the last of what Winston Churchill had called 'the Hitler gang'. Their sentences, meted out by the court at Nuremberg, represented a gigantic s t e p f orward in the recognition of international justice. They stood condemned for their part in a campaign of organized cruelty such as history had never seen before. (This book) is the outcome of years of dedicated research. It examines t h e se ve n m en themselves - their private lives, their motivation, their machinations inside Sapdau, their relationships with each other and their attitudes to their crimes. Built up from conversations with their families, lawyers, friends and e ne mi es, an d, i n s ome cases, the men themselves, from visits to Berlin made with their wives, from letters written in prison, both authorized and smuggled, and from authentic conversations between the prisoners, this aspect of the book is in i tse lf a gr ippi ng stu dy o f human corruption. Equally extraordinary are the book's revelations about the hitherto secret diplomatic and political infighting that went on between the four Powers over the welfare and fate of the seven prisoners. The eve nts a nd in tri gues surr ounding the jail are as spellbinding as those that occurred inside." Very minor foxing on top of text block.
