"In April 1943, the Royal Canadian Navy assumed responsibility for Canadian Northwest Atlantic Command, the only operational area to be run by a Canadian Commander-in-Chief during the Second World War. (This book) describes the RCN's long, challenging journey from the outbreak of the war in September 1939 to the momentous events of Spring 1943. Based on extensive research in Canadian, British, American and German archives, (it) describes the mobilization of the naval service during the first half of the war, measures its response to the demanding, ever-changing strategic situations that confronted the Allies, and analyses the service of our ships and sailors on the North Atlantic, Pacific and Mediterranean seas as well as the defence of Canadian waters. With the main focus on the Battle of the Atlantic, this important and well-illustrated history demonstrates how Canadian naval forces proved indispensable to victory in that most critical campaign of the Second World War." Joining the RAF at the beginning of the war, he found himself as a young fighter pilot with the crack 93 Squadron at RAF Biggin Hill, in 1941. Towards the end of the war he became an RAF test pilot and later a member of the RAF's High Speed Flight. Working for Hawkers, he became Chief Test Pilot and did all the major flight development on one of the most famous of all RAF peacetime aircraft - the Hawker Hunter, and with it took the world speed record in 1953. Injured in a Hunter crash two years later, he was forced to leave Hawkers but continued to fly and later set up his own test flying business, as well as becoming the personal pilot of Sir George Dowty. IN GREAT WATERS: THE EPIC STORY OF THE BATTLE OF THE ATLANTIC., Dunmore, Spencer.
178 Dunmore, Spencer. IN GREAT WATERS: THE EPIC STORY OF THE BATTLE OF THE ATLANTIC.
McClelland & Stewart, (Toronto, 1999), Ist printing.
342 pp, large 8vo, hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0771029292 B&w photographs. "It was probably the most important battle of the Second World War. The German attempt to stem the vital trans-Atlantic flow of men and supplies to Britian would cost the Allies more than 2,600 merchant ships, 30,000 merchant seamen's lives, 5,000 aircrew, and about 2,500 aircraft. The battle ranged across the ocean: from the waters of the St. Lawrence, throught the treacherous open sea of the North Atlantic, to the fjords of Norway and the Bay of Biscay. Spencer Dunmore traces the complete history of the Battle of the Atlantic, giving equal time to all aspects of the conflict: in the air, on the water, and below its surface...tells the story from the perspective of both sides, and includes the first-hand accounts of individual participants, both Allied and German..."
