Greenhill, London, 1999.
208 pp, folio (14 1/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. "In a stunning collection of full colour plates, this superb book captures the spirit of the Imperial Guard cavalry and their role in Napoleon's battles. It fully conveys the glory of soldiers of a military era surpassing the splendour of any other.---(B)rings together, for the very first time, ninety-one colour plates by the celebrated artist Lucien Rousselot. The plates, housed in the Anne S.K. Brown Miltiary Collection, illustrate Nap oleon's key Guard cavalry units: the Dragoons (25 plates), a regiment established in 1806; the Chasseurs (27 plates), formed from Napoleon's own personal bodyguard of 'Guides'; the Polish Light Horse (25 plates), the first foreign regiment to be p a r t of the Imperial Guard; and the Grenadiers (13 plates), the most feared of all the French army's regiments. In addition there is one vivid picture of Napoleon, wearing his favourite uniform - that of the Chasseurs (frontispiece). Carefully re se ar ched by the leading French exponent of the history of uniforms, Lucien Rousselot, from primary sources, including surviving uniforms and official documents, and brilliantly executed, these paintings are the very best of their type and supe r b e xam ple s of military art. Accompanying texts by Edward Ryan provide information on the regiments' uniforms, colourful Guard commanders and hard-fought battles, and an Introduction charts the origins and development of the Guard cavalry." "Following decades of painstaking research, the author provides an intriguing, scholarly, yet highly r eadable history of these fascinating weapons and the men who made and fought with them. This wonderfully illustrated book displays in spectacular photographs, most of which are in colour and many of which have never been published before, t h e m o s t important samurai weapons of all - various types of long and short swords, polearms, bows and arrows, and firearms - as well as the dramatic forms of head and body armour designed specifically for samurai-versus-samurai combat. The sp ir it of t he s a murai lives on today in the practitioners of iaido, kendo, and the other marital arts. Japanese swords in particular are still made today, using centuries-old techniques, and may be seen as another embodiment of the samurai eth ic. A l tho ugh th ey ha ve no practical application outside of martial arts, the artistic properties inherent in their construction can only be admired. Now, as always, the weapons and armour of the samurai, as well as being incredibly effi cien t in the ir ter ribl e wo rk, ha ve a beauty of both form and texture greatly appreciated throughout the world and are of immense fascination to the modern collector and military history enthusiast alike." 3" dia. area of air bubbling under pape r on rear boa rd. "In 1831 the French society painter, Alexandre-Jean Dubois Drahonet, was commissioned by King William IV to paint a series of pictures illustrating recent changes in the uniforms and weapons on the British Army. This catalogue details the 92 pictures in the collection of Her Majesty The Queen, normally housed in the Private Apartments at Windsor Castle, with six other British military works by Dra h o n e t s e e n together for the first time. Known on the Continent as a portrait painter to elegant society, Drahonet was unusual in taking portraits from life - not only of the grandest of staff officers but also humble soldiers, including th re e li tt le ch il dr en from the Royal Military Asylum, the school for Army children. For the first time, the careers of these men have been researched in detail and they provide a fascinating insight into life in pre-Victorian Britain. Despite Hitler's damaging interference the quality of German field leadership, and of ne w w e a p ons, remained high; but each new Soviet offensive pushed the front line closer to - and finally, across - the borders of the Reich. In this fourth title of their sequence author and artist describe and illustrate the developments in unit o r ga ni za ti on, uniforms and equipment during 1943-45, including information on European and Eastern volunteer units; text and illustrations are supported by detailed tables."
