"In this carefully structured explanatory volume, the author charts the history of the defence of Britain and the threats it has faced, befo re discussing the constituents of home defence policy, from the role of the armed forces, reservist units, police and local government, to the warning and monitory systems available, the means by which key points would be protected and the t r a i n i n g undertaken by those involved to maintain a state of readiness. As we enter an era where many previously perceived threats are thought to be reducing, the need for vigilance and preparation has not yet been removed. Whether, as has b ee n pr op os ed , f uture home defence practices become interwoven with an all hazards approach to the subject - where defence facilities could switch to non military emergencies and disasters - or the status quo is maintained, the protection of th e c ou ntr y a nd its p eo ple should be studied outside the boundaries of political debate and beyond biased viewpoints. This volume will benefit reasoned discussion and advance knowledge of this crucial subject." Very light wrinkling at top /bot tom of spin e, s lig ht w avi nes s to fore-edge of textblock. THE CREATION OF A NATIONAL AIR FORCE. THE OFFICIAL HISTORY OF THE ROYAL CANADIAN AIR FORCE. VOLUME II (2 - TWO)., Douglas, W.A.B.
148 Douglas, W.A.B. THE CREATION OF A NATIONAL AIR FORCE. THE OFFICIAL HISTORY OF THE ROYAL CANADIAN AIR FORCE. VOLUME II (2 - TWO).
University of Toronto Press, Toronto, 1986.
797 pp, large 8vo (9 7/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Map endpapers. ISBN 0802025846 Profusely illustrated with photographs and maps (some fold-out). "From a small militia organization the Canadian air force had grown by 1945 into one of the country's three major autonomous military services. In this second volume of the RCAF's official history, covering the years from 1918 to 1945, W.A.B. Douglas chronicles the force's rapid growth and provides a vivid portrait of the Battle of the At lantic as it was fought from the eastern shores of Canada. Military necessity had brought Canada into the air age. In the peaceful 1920s, civil more than military concerns governed the shape, size, and functions of the RCAF; in the followi n g d e c a d e the rise of international tensions forced the service to concentrate on its military role. During the Second World War the RCAF grew from a few hundred airmen to a force of some eighty squadrons and nearly a quarter of a million pe op le . RC AF s qu adrons, wings, and groups took their place beside other Allied air forces in many theatres of the Second World War, and in the process acquired capabilities in virtually every phase of air warfare. The roots of the RCAF's growi ng rep ut a tio n i n o ver seas theatres, especially in the Northwest Europe campaign, were to be found at home. Responsible for the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan in Canada, the RCAF trained large numbers of other Commonwealth and Allied air men as we ll a s Ca nadi ans. Charged with the air defence of Canada, it built up a big Home War Establishment which fought on the Pacific Coast and also played a significant part in the defeat of enemy attempts to destroy Allied shipping, par ticu larl y i n t he Ba ttle of th e Atl antic. The latter was a crucial role, sustaining Great Britain and the Allied forces in Europe. Directed from headquarters at Halifax, aircraft of Eastern Air Command ranged from the St Lawrence River to mi d-oce an, u ltim atel y thwa rting Germa n U-bo ats that nearly severed the North Atlantic under British Command. Douglas's account is the first to give proper credit to the RCAF for the part it played in these operations. It also incorporates ne w info rmatio n on perso nalitie s, tec hnology , and i ntelligence." A heavy volume which may require extra postage. Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, very small area of color loss on front board, very light edge wear to boards. 149 Douglas-Hamilton, James. Introduction by Laddie Lucas. THE AIR BATTLE FOR MALTA: THE DIARIES OF A FIGHTER PILOT.

150 pp, large 8vo (9 11/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0905778456 Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs. "For both the Axis and Allied Powers, Malta was a vital key to victory - not only in the Mediterranean, but in North Africa and the Middle East as well. In this new edition of his highly-praised book....(the author) provides one of the most intriguing and realistic accounts of the struggle for possession of the island, a fight to the death which lasted two-and-a-ha l f y e a r s , during which time 14,000 tons of bombs were dropped on a defiant population. The book is largely based on the diaries of Lord David Douglas-Hamiton, the author's uncle, who was sent out to Malta as a Spitfire Squadron Leader at a ti me wh en t he i sl and was sustaining heavier bombing than London at the height of the Blitz, and the Axis forces were preparing for invasion. The author's scrupulous research, combined with his uncle's uniquely authoritative viewpoint, vivid ly rec r eat es the pe rio d, the comradeship and the grimness of life on the beleaguered island. The air battle, which was the second largest of the entire war, involved some of the most famous fighter aces of World War II, including 'Screwball' Beu rlin g and Lad die Luca s. The y all played a vital part in what proved to be one of the greatest defensive and strategic operations of all time, and their exploits, along with those of many others, are recorded here, a reminder of their indomit able spir it in the face of a ppa llin g odds." 202 pp, 8vo (8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0571131115 "This is the fourth in Lawrence Durrell's current sequence of novels, following 'Contance', which was short-listed for the Booker Prize. What Mr Durrell calls his 'quincunx' can now b e seen emerging as an Avignon quintet, more and more recognizably linked with the themes and characters of 'The Alexandria Quartet'. In 'Sebastian' the locale is principally Geneva, picking up from the close of 'Constance', and as the sto r y u n f o l d s what were enigmas become revelations, and what seemed brilliant patchwork becomes a cunning woven tapestry. The relationship of Constance and Affad is under threat, and they realize they are heading for a fearful crisis; while h er p r of es si on al p ra ctice as a clinical psychiatrist involves her in the patient healing of an autistic child = her lover's son - and the handling of a dangerous criminal psychopath. CANADIAN IMPRESSIONISM., Duval, Paul.
154 Duval, Paul. CANADIAN IMPRESSIONISM.
Toronto McClelland & Stewart 1990 0771029650 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Very Good
166 pp, square 4to (11 3/4" H). "This beautiful volume, full of the light and colour that characterize most Impressionist art, is a thoroughly enjoyable guide to Canadian Impressionist painting from roughly 1885 to 1920. It brings together, for the first time in book form, the Canadian representatives of the world's most popular and accessible school of painting, offering a totally fresh look at a now-vanished society, and presenting a strong contrast to the isolated, unpopulated vision of the country usually portrayed by the Group of Seven - although members of that group are represented in their earlier, more intimate styles. 'Canadian Impressionism' conveys a vivid cross-section of the subject, including many paintings that have never before been reproduced. The work of neglected artists such as Helen McNicoll, Frank Armington, John S. Gordon, John Russell, and William Clapp is featured among the seventy full-colour plates, alongside the more familiar talents of J.W. Morrice, Paul Peel, Lawren Harris, Maurice Cullen, and A.Y. Jackson. (A) revelation and a delight, showing as it does a charming side of Canadian art that has not, until now, received the attention that it deserves." Pantheon, New York, 1976, first American edition.
215 pp, large 8vo (9 5/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0394496647 B&w photographs, map, diagrams. "(A) masterfully detailed reconstruction of what life was like for millions of men who lived and died in the trenches of World War I. Contin uing his trail-blazing approach to the study of war and militarism, Ellis reveals the physical and spiritual environment of this unique world, the rituals of battle, the habits of daily lfie, and the constant struggle of men to find meaning i n a w o r ld of excruciating boredom and impending death. (He) beings with a description of the physical construction of the trenches, their size and shape, their peculiarities and characteristics. The soldiers' daily life is succinctly portraye d: ho w t he y ate, drank, slept, joked, fought off rats and lice, how their sexual needs were met, and how they endured the marches and patrols. But it is in the ways men sought meaning in their daily lives that Ellis reveals the true nature of war f are . In an al yzing how the habits and regulations so dear to the military mind became entrenched in the organization of the battlefield, (this book) brilliantly depicts the instinctive desire of men in battle to create order out of chaos. Thr ou gh a n expl orat ion of the personal reflections of soldiers and the letters they wrote home, Ellis discovers a literature of compassion, courage, and a capacity to endure which arose from an environment of filth, decay, and death. It capt ures a w orld in whic h men fou ght, for reasons they hardly understood, for a future most had ceased to believe in by the end of the war."
