MEN-OF-WAR. LIFE IN NELSON'S NAVY., Patrick O'Brian.
149 Patrick O'Brian. MEN-OF-WAR. LIFE IN NELSON'S NAVY.
New York W.W. Norton 1995 0393038580 / 9780393038583 First American Edition Near Fine Near Fine
95 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). "This richly illustrated book offers a concise overview of the historical background to Patrick O'Brian's acclaimed Aubrey/Maturin series, a straightforward exploration of what daily life in Nelson's navy was really like for everyone from the captain to the rawest recruit. What did they eat? What songs did they sing? What was the schedule of the watches? What was the division of prize money to offices and crew? How did these men end up at sea in the first place? These questions and many more are answered in O'Brian's elegant narrative, which includes wonderful anecdotal material on the battles and commanders that established Britain's naval supremacy. Line drawings and charts help us to understand the construction and rigging of the great ships, the types and disposition of the guns, and how they were operated in battle. Contemporary drawings and cartoons illustrate aspects of naval life from the press gang to the scullery. Finally, a generous selection of full-color paintings renders the majesty and the excitement of fleet actions in the age of fighting sail. Any Aubrey/Maturin reader determined to learn the locations of the orlop and the mizenmast, the etiquette of epaulettes, or the range of a 32-pounder will delight in this invaluable reference companion to O'Brian's majestic series."

202 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w photographs, reproductions."(A) lighthearted but true-to-life account of Canadian home front living during the war years. When teenaged boys put on uniforms and sailed, flew, and marched off to fight in the Second World War, the teenaged girls they left behind them were in uniform too: a Sloppy Joe sweater, a string of pearls, skirt, bobbysox, and saddleshoes. Meet Mary, one of those girls in a Sloppy Joe sweater; her best friend Cath, and their friends; and follow their fortunes through these six significant years in history that paralleled six of the most formative years of their lives. Through Mary you will learn what they were like; how they passed their time as they waited for the boys to come home; their code of manners and mores; what they talked about at their 'hen parties'; the music and radio programs they listened to; the movies they watched; the books and magazines they read; their fashion 'fads'; their humour; and their contribution to the 'war effort'. Accented by newspaper clippings of the time, the reader gets a chronological review of home and war front news. These vignettes of history reflect the reality of life and death of never to be forgotten days and when juxtaposed with the author's highly entertaining text, the whole forms a record of the times as none other has." Previous owner's small label on free front endpaper, book is slightly cocked, small bump at top corner of rear board. Dust jacket has light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, light fading to spine color - mainly top half, minor rubbing.

159 pp, oblong (8 3/4" H x 10 5/8" D). "Perhaps nothing evokes a particular time and place more vividly than photographs: the stiff family studio portraits of the Victorians, sad formal pictures of young men standing proudly in their wartime uniforms, grainy snapshots depicting people in the 'new look' clothes of the 1940s. (The author) has selected over 160 black and white photographs from the 1890s to the 1950s, divinding them into ten sections under headings such as, 'Rural Life', 'War and Disaster', 'On Sea and Shore', and 'Ceremony and Celebration'. Each section is arranged, when possible, in chronological order. Fishermen and miners, farmers and firemen, sailors and students, parents and children are captured at work, at school, and at play. Towns, stations, ships, parades, plays and picnics illuminate this glimpse of a vanished way of life." Light edge wear - mostly on bottom edge. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling.
