STEAM NAVIGATION AND ITS RELATION TO THE COMMERCE OF CANADA AND THE UNITED STATES., Croil, James.
141 Croil, James. STEAM NAVIGATION AND ITS RELATION TO THE COMMERCE OF CANADA AND THE UNITED STATES.
Toronto Coles 1973 Facsimile Edition. Fine Very Good
381 pp, 8 5/8" H. Burgundy cloth with black title block, gilt lettering/banding on spine, gilt lettering/banding on front board - one of the Coles Canadian Collection. B&w photographs, drawings, reproductions, maps. A facsimile of the edition published by William Briggs, Toronto, 1898. "(This) is an exciting study of the development of steam navigation in Canada. In tracing the transition from sailing ships to the paddle-steamer, and from the paddle-steamer to the revolutionary screw-propeller, the author writes with the kind of imaginative insight that brings back to life a past age of challenge. One of the delightful features of this book is the vivid study of shipping on the Great Lakes. Croil's account of the lake ships catches the imagination with its comprehensive study of past glories: LaSalle's schooner of ten tons, whose journey was halted by the Niagara Falls; the first lake steamer, the 'Frontenac' (1816), said to be the best example of naval architecture in North America; the 'Queen Charlotte' (1818), which carried passengers from Prescott to the stage-coach station at the head of the Bay of Quinte; the 'Gore', built at Niagara in 1838, which was one of the earliest passenger steamers on Georgian Bay; and the 'Bruce Mines', which carried copper ore on Lake Huron. The reader will be equally delighted by the large number of illustrations Croil provides. (They) present a glorious pictorial record of early shipping, showing the curious Miller Twin-Boat of 1788, C.P.R.'s astonishingly modern 'Empress' line of 1891, the Ottawa river steamer, the 'Sovereign', and the 'Passport', a mail paddle-steamer which sailed from Lake Ontario to Montreal." Dust jacket has minor edge rubbing, very tiny tear at bottom of spine.

635 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. " 'There is perhaps no figure in the history of medicine in Manitoba whose influence has been greater than that exerted by Dr. Paul H.T. Thorlakson - 'Doctor Thor' as he is affectionately known. There are of course many whose contributions in particular spheres were unsurpassed, but none whose vision was broader; none whose grasp of the import of social developments for medical practice was firmer; none whose ability to transform grand designs into reality was greater. The story of the life and career of Dr. Thor reveals much of the drive, tenacity and dynamism that animated this remarkable man; but for each of us whose life has been touched in some special way by him (this book) will bring to mind many personal recollections of the force of this personality'." 148 Davies, Russell. (Ronald Searle.) RONALD SEARLE: A BIOGRAPHY.
London Sinclair-Stevenson 1990 1856190048 / 9781856190046 First Edition Very Good Very Good Ronald Searle.
192 pp, 4to (11 1/8" H). Profusely illustrated in b&w and colour with photographs and reproductions. "Born in 1920 in Cambridge, (Ronald Searle) became a regular contributor to the Cambridge Daily News in 1935, financed his own night-school studies in drawing and won an art-school scholarship. The war shattered the university-town idyll. In 1942 Searle was captured by the Japanese at Singapore and later put to work on the terrible 'Death Railway' from Siam to Burma. His remarkable eye-witness drawings, achieved with very scant materials, constitute a uniquely important documentary record of the horrors of those times. The post-war years found him in London. As creator of St Trinian's and delineator of Nigel Molesworth, he was a feted London celebrity in the Fifties. His tremendous appetite for work did not, however, save him from involvement in some peculiar situations. Searle's participation in the 1956 Suez Affair, detailed here for the first time, is one of the book's many surprises. In 1961, (he) abandoned the life he had built, moved to France and started again. Living with his second wife in a remote village in Haute-Provence, he has continued to delight and disturb the world with a stream of images that mocks with the best intentions: to make people laugh, and to entice them, through their laughter, to share his own critical vision of the world. Ronald Searle allowed Russell Davies special access to his archive, and has approved the selection of his work that helps to tell his story." 1" split in cloth at bottom of front hinge, very small bump at top corner of boards. Dust jacket has some very light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, minor browning at top edge.

149 Davis, Richard C., editor. (Sir John Franklin.) SIR JOHN FRANKLIN'S JOURNALS AND CORRESPONDENCE: THE FIRST ARCTIC LAND EXPEDITION, 1819-1822.
Toronto Champlain Society 1995 0969342543 / 9780969342540 Limited Edition Near Fine
cix, 463 pp, (xxiii), large 8vo (9 1/2" H), red cloth with gold lettering/banding/emblem on spine (no dust jacket - as issued). Top edge gilt. Limited edition of 1250 copies, this copy unnumbered. B&w illustrations, 3 maps (2 double-page). "This volume contains nearly complete transcriptions of the extant journals kept by John Franklin during his expedition to the unknown northern coast of the North American continent in the years 1819 to 1822. Only a few abstracts and tables of observations from the extant journal books have been excluded, and they, for the most part, are available in the appendices to Franklin's published 'Narrative of a Journey to the Shores of the Polar Sea in the Years 1819, 20, 21, and 22'. The present volume also includes transcriptions of a selection of correspondence written during the preparation for and execution of Franklin's first expedition. While most of the letters included here were written by Franklin, some were written by other correspondents to Franklin. A few highly selective pieces were neither written nor recieved by Franklin, but bear special relevance to letters that Franklin wrote. The Introduction provides short biographies of some of the men involved, and then establishes an historical context in which to situate the 1819-22 expedition. The sources of the various documents are next identified, followed by an attempt to understand what brought about the deaths of 11 out of 20 men under Franklin's leadership." Some minor wrinkling to fore-edge of some pages.

NAPOLEON'S MARSHALS., Delderfield, R.F. (Ronald Frederic Delderfield.)

Philadelphia Chilton 1966 Second Printing Very Good Very Good
242 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w illustrations. "Napoleon, that master strategist, created twenty-six Marshals of France between the years 1804 and 1815. These men, who held the highest positions in the Empire after Napoleon himself, came from diverse, and often humble backgrounds. Among the twenty-six were officers, sergeant majors, rankers, apprentices, a farmer's boy, a brewer, a poet, a smuggler, an actor, a barber, and a prince. The two qualities they all had in common were courage and ambition. During the years when Napoleon was conqueror of most of Europe, the marshals acquired titles and great riches, and in the end there was only one who was not to some extent corrupted by greed or ambition, and who remained loyal to the man who had elevated them all to power. Through their stories, and the eyes of the author, the entire panorama of French history, from the first days of the French Revolution until the restoration of the Bourbons, is seen. The color and excitement of the great battles, the strategy, the roll of history is here in (this book), the first to follow the actual careers of the marshals from July, 1789, until their deaths." 252 pp, 13 1/2" H. Brown cloth with gilt lettering on spine, pictorial endpapers. In publisher's original plain cardboard slipcase. B&w and colour reproductions. "(A) stunning exhibition of the city's mag-nificent art treasures. Compiled by the directors of Prague's National Museum and National Gallery, this important and eye-filling work is a rich cornucopia which art historians, students of central Europe, and travelers to the historic city may sample with profit and pleasure. Itself an art treasure with its ancient buildings, historic monuments, and panoramic views, 'the city of a hundred towers' is home to notable collections of paintings, drawings, sculpture, and objects d'art dating from Charles IV and even earlier. Reflecting Prague's position at the heart of Europe along centuries-old trade routes, these collections encompass the continent's many schools of art, architecture, and handicrafts and repre-sent a distillation of Prague's turbulent thousand-year history. Modern scholarship, including some extraordinary scholarly detective work on the Prague Castle Gallery collection, has uncovered, restored, and made available to experts and public alike many little-known treasures. Equally impressive are collections of early art, coins, astronomical instruments, and Bohemian and modern Czechoslovak glass and porcelain. History of church and state can be glimpsed in the art of stone-cutters, goldsmith and silversmiths, weavers and embroiderers, and masters of illuminated manu-scripts." 154 Devins, Joseph H., Jr. THE VAAGSO RAID: THE COMMANDO ATTACK THAT CHANGED THE COURSE OF WORLD WAR II.
Chilton, Philadelphia, 1968.
222 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs, maps. "In the dark, early morning hours of Saturday, December 27, 1941, a small force of British warships escorting two camouflaged excursion steamers slipped past a German lookou t station and sailed boldly into one of the great fjords of occupied Norway. Aboard the two steamers a tense group of British and Norwegian commandos rechecked their weapons and waited for the reaction of the nearby German coastal batteries . T h e t arget: Vaagso Island. Earlier thrusts by British raiding parties had deliberately avoided heavily defended sectors of the enemy coast. This was to be the first raid of the war on a fortified postion, a demonstration that the offensive sp i ri t wa s s trong in Britain despite the Nazi conquest of the Continent and the humiliation of Dunkerque. But the consequences of this sortie would reach far beyond the snow-covered mountains which reverberated that Saturday with the thud of ex pl o sio ns an d the snarl and rattle of sub-machine guns. The British gained vital experience in inter-service cooperation and information that would prove invaluable in subsequent raids on Dieppe and St. Nazaire. But in Berlin, Hitler was asto nis he d at th e da ri ng a nd apparent readiness of the British to hurl their forces into the teeth of a well prepared defense. As a result, he made decisions of major strategic importance. This is the story of a group of courageous men, of how they de velop ed a new typ e of fighting force, how they fought, how they died, and how they altered the course of the war." More - he insured the success of William Henry Harrison's Northwest Territory campaign, in which he soldiered as a volunteer aide to General Harrison. He ended Tecumseh's plans for an Indian Confederation. He dashed forever Britain's dream of blocking the United States in its westward march. In 1811 Perry was named to create a f l e e t on Lake Erie. He chose Presque Ile Bay as the one harbor safe from the existing British lake fleet. Perry spent the spring and summer of 1813 doing the impossible - building first a shipyard, then a fleet of ten vessels in the frontie r o ut po st o f Erie, Pennsylvania. The bar at Erie was not deep enough to pass Perry's ships out into the lake. (But neither could the British enter the bay over the shallows; hence his choice of harbor.) He bided his time till his opponent Ca pt ai n R obe rt Bar clay sailed away for a brief respite. Then his men, in a fenzy of activity, emptied their ships of all guns and heavy gear and buoyed them with pontoons until they could be boosted across the sandbar. Perry got them safely int o d eep wat er i n t he n ick of time. And when Barclay's fleet came up to resume the blockade of Erie, Perry bluffed them away with his still undermanned and almost unarmed flotilla. Once reinforced by a unit under the command of Jesse D. Elliot t, P erry atta cked the Briti sh fleet in his flagship 'Lawrence'; Elliott was to bring the 'Niagara' into action beside him. Elliott, unaccountably, hung back, and the 'Lawrence' was shot to pieces by the three strongest Britishers. How Perry tu rned certa in def eat i nto a monu mental victory is one of the greatest naval achievements of all time." 160 Dobbs, Kildare. RIBBON OF HIGHWAY: BY BUS ALONG THE TRANS-CANADA.
Toronto Little, Brown 1992 20316187828 Very Good Very Good
239 pp, 9 1/4" H. "World-traveller Kildare Dobbs has ridden the transcontinental buses to rediscover Canada for himself. He travelled more than 7,000 miles by bus along the world's longest national highway, the Trans Canada that runs from St. John's, Newfoundland to Victoria, British Columbia. The result is a portrait of the immense land, a travel book lit by memories and imagination, and at the same time a chorus of Canadian voices, as the seatmates who travel with him tell their stories. Bus travellers tend not to be people who talk to Royal Commissioners or phone-in media shows. Yet going quietly about their lives they're truly representative of their origins and their country." Minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, very light browning to edges of text block. Dust jacket has very light edge wrinkling - mainly at top edge, minor browning at top edge.
