144 Lowe, Kevin. With Stan and Shirley Fischler. CHAMPIONS: THE MAKING OF THE EDMONTON OILERS.
Scarborough, Ontario Prentice-Hall 1988 0132356236 / 9780132356237 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
356 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "When the Edmonton Oilers won their first Stanley Cup in 1984, Albertans rejoiced. They had waited 91 years for just this moment. When they won it again in 1985, a new era in hockey was born: The Edmonton Era. Just six years after being incorporated into the National Hockey League, the Oilers had won back-to-back Stanley Cups and rewritten half the record book. In these few years they had grown from a cocky, immature team into a championship team with character and charisma. Kevin Lowe describes all of this and more. In particular, he talks about his teammates - the magnificent Mark Messier, the Flying Finns, the unbeatable Grant Fuhr, Boy Wonder Wayne Gretzky and, of course, the controversial Glen Sather. (This) is the complete, dynamic chronicle of the team that Gretzky helped to propel to greatness, told from the point of view of (his) roommate and teammate Kevin Lowe." Slight wrinkle at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has soft wrinkling at bottom of spine and bottom of rear flap, very light rubbing on rear panel.

314 pp, 10" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, maps, floor plans, elevations, drawings, overlays. "For the first time, the architectural history of the town of Lexington and its t wo nationally distinguished campuses has been appraised in a scholarly fashion. This Valley of Virginia community together with Washington and Lee University and the Virginia Military Institute, presents exceptionally fine examples of American architectural styles from the late eighteenth to the early twentieth century. A remarkable number of architects of national reputation, including Thomas U. Walter, Alexander Jackson Davis, and Bertram G. Goodhue, completed important work here. This new study places the noteworthy buildings and their designers within the context of the architectural development of the Valley region and assesses their role in the evolution of the nation's styles. The volume is divided into three sections: the town, Washington and Lee, and VMI. In each, an essay on the history of the development of representative styles is followed by a photographic survey of the buildings." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. THE MAKING OF THE CANADIAN WEST; BEING THE REMINISCENCES OF AN EYE-WITNESS., MacBeth, R.G., Rev.
146 MacBeth, R.G., Rev. THE MAKING OF THE CANADIAN WEST; BEING THE REMINISCENCES OF AN EYE-WITNESS.
Toronto Coles 1973 Facsimile Edition. Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good-
230 pp, 8 5/8" H. Burgundy cloth with black title block, gilt lettering/banding on spine, gilt lettering/banding on front board - one of the Coles Canadian Collection. B&w photographs, drawings. A facsimile of the edition published by William Briggs, Toronto, 1898. "As a boy, R.G. MacBeth witnessed the struggle we now know as the Riel Rebellion. His account begins with the barring to the new Canadian governor of the highway between Fort Garry and the border on October 21, 1869, and ends with the triumphant return of the Winnipeg Light Infantry to Winnipeg in 1885. Written from 'notes made nightly at the camp-fire' while the author took part in the military campaign, the story is dramatic and authentic. However, there is more here than simply sources for the military or political historian. The book brings to life the drama of frontier days. The remarkable men who shaped the West walk again: Ambroise Lepine, Riel's huge lieutenant, 'the only one who manifested anything like manliness after it was over'; Dr. John Shultz, who escaped from the rebels by running six miles on an injured leg through arctic temperatures; Donald A. Smith, the commissioner from Ottawa, 'a man of rare skill and tact'; Riel himself, who 'felt the wine of a new movement in his system'. The heart-breaking struggle of these men and their contemporaries to create a new land is graphically portrayed." Dust jacket has light edge rubbing, small tear (archivally taped) with creases at top of front flap-fold.

A HISTORY OF FORT WILLIAM AND PORT ARTHUR NEWSPAPERS FROM 1875., Macgillivray, George G. Foreword by R.A. Barford.
147 Macgillivray, George G. Foreword by R.A. Barford. A HISTORY OF FORT WILLIAM AND PORT ARTHUR NEWSPAPERS FROM 1875.
Fort William, Ontario Self-published 1968 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Good+
101 pp, 11 1/4" H. B&w photographs, reproductions. "It is a truism that wherever and whenever men formed settlements on this continent a newspaper of some kind would soon be born. This is that kind of story for the Twin Cities in Thunder Bay District at the head of Lake Superior. They represent, because of their isolated position in the centre of Canada, not only a typical but almost a classic situation. With no major Canadian market closer than 425 miles in one direction and 1,000 miles in the other, with no airlines or even roads to such markets and with one rail line in its infancy, newspapers in these two pioneer communities existed for many years in a relatively uncomplicated milieu. Commencing in 1875, more than 30 newspapers have been published in Fort William and Port Arthur. They have run all the way from small handwritten newspapers to the large size, well-printed and comprehensive newspapers of our time. Even though today's newspapers differ mightily in appearance and coverage of news from the old-time weeklies, one similarity has persisted through the years - genuine interest in and loyalty to their communities." From the Foreword. very light browning to edges of text block. Dust jacket has very light browning on spine and flap-folds, light edge wear/wrinkling, light rubbing, light soiling on rear panel, small stain on front panel, several edge tears with old tape repair on inside.

190 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs, maps. "(T)ells the story of Canada's Athabasca area in Northern Alberta. There, one of nature's mightiest rivers and the gigantic lake into which it flows have witnessed the exploits of fur-traders, explorers, missionaries and pioneers. Dr. MacGregor presents the region before the coming of the white man, the tentative beginnings of the fur-trade, the early explorations of Samuel Hearne and Peter Pond, the probing journeys of the voyageurs, the long and bitter rivalry between the Hudson's Bay Company and the North West Company for the rich fur resources of the region. Here are tales of advernturers and settlers, the scow brigades and sternwheeler crews, the railway builders and the airplane pilots, all of whom have set their mark on the region. Of special interest in the light of recent events, is the history of the development of the Athabasca oil sands, from its early beginnings at the turn of the (20th) century to the modern extraction complex of today." EDMONTON TRADER: THE STORY OF JOHN A. McDOUGALL., MacGregor, James G.
149 MacGregor, James G. EDMONTON TRADER: THE STORY OF JOHN A. McDOUGALL.
Toronto McClelland & Stewart 1963 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Good-
262 pp, 9 1/4" H. Map endpapers, b&w photographs, maps, reproductions. "John A. McDougall left his Ontario home in 1873 to seek his fortune in the West, first as a fur trader on the Fort Carlton Trail, and then for some fifty years as a merchant in Edmonton (population forty when he first arrived there in 1879). During his lifetime he saw the Indians signing their lands over to the Crown; watched the hamlet of Edmonton by-passed by the railroad and later cut off for weeks by hostile Indians during the second Riel Rebellion. He experienced the Edmonton boom when the Klondike rush began and the decline resulting from the gradual abandonment of the overland route to the Yukon. A long hard climb to prosperity followed. (This book) throws new light on an important section of Canadian history and illustrates the magnitude of the changes that have taken place in the West in the past hundred years." Dust jacket has several edge tears archivally taped, a few small scuffs/rub marks, very light fading on spine/hinges, some light soiling on hinges, very small closed tear on front hinge.

EARLIEST TORONTO., MacIntosh, Robert M.
151 MacIntosh, Robert M. EARLIEST TORONTO.
Renfrew, Ontario General Store Publishing 2007 1897113412 / 9781897113417 2nd Printing Soft Cover Near Fine
107 pp, 8 1/2" H. B&w and colour illustrations, maps. "Beginning with the dramatic conflicts in the aboriginal communities around Lake Ontario before the coming of the Europeans in the early seventeenth century, followed by two centuries of French exploration and settlement, the city's early history will surprise many Torontonians. Simcoe, the founder of the Village of York in 1793, is often presented as a great administrator and military leader. In fact he was a poor manager with no attachment to Canada, and a vigorous advocate of English snobbery and class distinction. His chief concern was to gain preferment in London and to transplant the values of the British class system to the forest frontier. (This book) makes a plausible case that the real founder of Toronto was William Berczy, a remarkably cultured and determined man who led an expedition of German immigrants to Markham in 1794, and who contributed significantly to the early development of the new settlement. Later chapters focus on the people and events that shaped the early years of a struggling frontier community. One of the stories is about the sinking of the Speedy on Lake Ontario, and how it led to the building of The Grange, today one of Toronto's oldest extant buildings and the birthplace of the Art Gallery of Ontario." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - a few pages with a tiny wrinkle at bottom edge.

London Macdonald. 1991 0356195732 / 9780356195735 Hard Cover Fine Near Fine
465 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H), B&w photographs, maps. "Jean Batten, whose sudden disappearance in Majorca in 1982 created a mystery for nearly five years, was one of the great aviation megastars of the 1930s. Her spectacular flights ranked with those of Britain's legendary Amy Johnson and America's Amelia Earhart. Yet, despite her brilliance as a pilot, she remained the least well-known of them all. For the dentist's daughter from New Zealand bu ilt an impregnable wall around her private life - which was dominated, though few ever knew it, by the shadowy Svengali figure of her mother. Drawing on secret memoirs found after (her) death and on hundreds of interviews with people who knew her, this first biography of Jean's sad and elusive life explodes the enduring myths of happiness and perfection that she created for herself. The real Jean Batten emerges as a fascinating woman, who combined bravery and ruthlessness with the stunning a nd seductive beauty she used so effectively to achieve her destiny. After her disappearance, the search for Jean during the mid-1980s went on fruitlessly for five years. But where the diplomatic initiatives of the New Zealand Government failed to find her, the determination of Ian Mackersey - and his wife Caroline - succeeded. In a major amateur detective operation they established at last in 1987 the truth about this remarkable woman's bizarre and lonely fate." CHATTANOOGA - A DEATH GRIP ON THE CONFEDERACY., McDonough, James Lee.
160 McDonough, James Lee. CHATTANOOGA - A DEATH GRIP ON THE CONFEDERACY.
Knoxville University of Tennessee Press 1984 0870494252 / 9780870494253 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good+
298 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w photographs, reproductions, maps/battle plans. "In the wake of the bloodshed at Chickamauga, the struggle for Chattanooga became a decisive engagement of the Civil War. McDonough reconstructs the siege and battles as they appeared to both Rebels and Yankees, giving the reader a front-row seat at one of the major dramas in American history. The tale culminates in the complex bid for Missionary Ridge, which ended with the collapse of the Confederate line at its center. Reversing their situation in one final, dramatic hour, Union forces emerged victorious. The Rebels forfeited the advantage offered by the triumph of Chickamauga and now found the tables turned. With Chattanooga in their grasp, the Federals stood in a position to carry the fight deep into the South. The river and railroads both made the city important as a natural passageway that provided the Union with a staging base for military operations. The Rebels, on the other hand, found their railway communications crippled. The Confederacy had earlier been split along the Mississippi River; now it was to be severed by a second line that passed from Nashville to Atlanta via Chattanooga." Very light edge wear, small bump at top edge of front board, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.
