143 Stewart, Robert. SAM STEELE: LION OF THE FRONTIER.
Toronto Doubleday Canada 1979 038513598X / 9780385135986 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Fair Inscribed By Author
303 pp, 8 3/8" H. Map endpapers, b&w photographs. Inscribed on title page: "To Mr. Walter Loudon / an old Nor'Wester / Robert Stewart". "Young Sam Steele joined the North-West Mounted Police at its founding in the spring of 1873. His physical strength, skill with a horse, and determined character made him an ideal recruit for the fledgling force faced with the task of policing an area the size of Western Europe. Those first Mounties, ill-equipped and undermanned as they were, managed to bring order to a vast frontier and made possible the preservation of the fragile Canadian confederation. As he rose through the ranks, (he) took part in the great and small events of the opening of the Canadian West. Whether dealing with the refugee Sioux Chief Sitting Bull or tracking down cattle rustlers and murderers - and then dispensing justice in a tent courtroom - Steele displayed a combination of bravery, commonsense, fairness, and ingenuity. Thanks to Sam and the thirty men under him, not a mile of the Canadian Pacific Railway was lost to lawlessness during its construction through the prairies. Durng the gold rush of '98, he gained the respect of the roughnecks and dance hall girls alike in Dawson City, becoming known as the Lion of the Yukon. As commander of Lord Strathcona's Horse in the Boer War, Fighting Sam and his Big Stirrups rode the veldt as they had the Canadian prairie. This is a rich and exciting biography of the most famous Mounted Policeman of his day; it is also the story of a fascinating and formative period in Canadian history." Slight wrinkling at bottom of spine, tiny scuff on front board, one tiny corner bump, a few tiny bumps on bottom edge of front board, two ssmall scuffs to fore-edge of text block. Dust jacket is price-clipped, has several tiny chips and small tears archivally taped, small edge creases, light soiling on rear panel, light liquid stain at bottom of rear flap-fold, two 3" tears on front panel with old tape on inside, slight browning.

RHODESIA., Todd, Judith.
148 Todd, Judith. RHODESIA.
London MacGibbon & Kee 1966 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Good+
170 pp, 8 3/4" H. "Judith Todd sets out some facts on the origins of the dispute over Rhodesia (the current Zimbabwe). As the daughter of a former Prime Minister she is in a good position to know part of the story from the inside. Her father is now 'restricted' by an order made by an illegal government. Miss Todd was brought up on a mission station in Rhodesia and while she understands perfectly well the European achievement in this part of Africa, she has seen also that it is not enough. Not at least while the great majority of the population is thwarted politically and socially underprivileged to an extreme degree. Their leaders are cajoled, penalised; their sympathisers are made victims of the most crude political enmity - amounting almost to hysteria. Miss Todd is devoted to the best and long-lasting aspirations of this beautiful country. She can, therefore, bear the revilement that the friends of the misguided and ultimately doomed Rhodesian government have to offer. Patriotism may well not be enough; but justicce and freedom are necessary foundations to any patriotism deserving of the name." Chapter headings: 'The Police and the Army are Ready'; In the Beginning; The Essence of Discrimination; Right Turn Ahead; Sowing the Seeds; Where the Banished Ones Sleep; White Myths and Black Realities; Civilised Standards; Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness; 'The Respect for the Opinions of Mankind'; Happy New Year!; Not the End of the World; The Consent of the Governed. Previous owner's signature, place and date in ink on front free endpaper, scattered tiny light foxing marks on rear endpapers and on edges of text block, minor wrinkling at bottom of spine. Cassell, London, 1950, first edition.
668 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H), hard cover (green cloth with gold lettering on spine) - no dust jacket. B&w photographs, reproductions, maps (2 fold-out). "This is the tale of the last two years of British rule in India (1946-47), told by one who watche d events from the Headquarters of Eastern Command. My story will show how Indian affairs were when the (Second World War) was over: the rapid deterioration of the adminstration as the small British cadre of civil officials was hurriedly replaced by Indian, and as independence became more and more certain; in particular the lawlessness which so quickly set in: the almost insupportable burden that was placed upon and successfully borne by the Indian Army and its few British officers, and how gr e at was the debt that India, the Commonwealth and indeed the world owed to the devotion of these officers, their skill, patience and staunchness: that we had no honourable alternative but to quit India: and, lastly, why, unless Russia first collaps es , India - Hindustan, if you will - is in grave danger of becoming communist in the not distant future. Of necessity the tale starts with a description of Eastern Command and its peoples. A more detailed description of Hinduism I have relagated to Appendix I. Without some knowledge of that system it is impossible either to understand the political and communal affairs of which the book speaks or to be aware of the bearing of Hinduism upon the past and, above all, the future of India." 368 pp, 9 1/2" H. Map endpapers, b&w photographs, maps. "(T)he panoramic story of the courageous U.S. Army Engineers and civilian contractors who toiled in the tense months after Pearl Harbor to build a 1,500-mile emergency supply line through the rugged Canadian Rockies to isolated military bases in Alaska. The construction of this winding gravel road - GI's called it the ALCAN - was very much an all-American adventure: blacks, whites, and natives working together under the harshest extremes of climate and terrain - racing to bolster Alaska's defenses and deter another Japanese attack on North American soil. The Alaska Highway - with its hundreds of bridges, chain of airfields, and oil refinery and pipeline system (known as CANOL) - opened to traffic in late 1942 and was in full use one year later. Though one of the greatest feats of twentieth-century macro-engineering, this huge project sparked as much protest as patriotism. Critics argued that the road was in the wrong place and would have little postwar value; a well-publicized investigation of CONOL's excesses gave a critical boost to the career of Senator Harry S. Truman." Very light wrinkling at top of spine, very small bump at top corner of both boards. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top of spine and flap-folds, light fading to spine color.

PHOENIX: A SUMMARY OF THE INESCAPABLE CONDITIONS OF WORLD REORGANISATION., Wells, H.G.
156 Wells, H.G. PHOENIX: A SUMMARY OF THE INESCAPABLE CONDITIONS OF WORLD REORGANISATION.
London Secker & Warburg 1942 First Edition Hard Cover Good+ Good-
192 pp, 7 3/8" H. "War Economy Standard." "For more than 50,000 generations man's history has been a story of masters and servitude; humiliation and unhappiness have been the lot of the vast majority of mankind since the dawn of organized society. War has succeeded war throughout the ages, always changing its nature, till now it has reached its ultimate stage, with the world a unit, huge populations its armies, and the weapons of war so decisively destructive that they will destroy mankind if they are not brought under control. For the first time, Wells argues, world reorganisation has become possible. In 'Phoenix', probably the most important book he has ever written, he outlines the current creative ideas of world reconstruction. He shows that three fundamental conditions are necessary: - federal world control of transport and disarmament; federal world control of the production and distribution of staple commodities; a world declaration of human rights. Wells claims that the Sankey-Wells declaration has already stated these rights. Lastly, he indicates the necessity of a final International which shall mobilize all men and women of courage, intelligence and good will, regardless of race, creed, class or colour, for a supreme attempt to defeat war and establish the lasting conditions of peace, freedom, progress and prosperity." Victoria, British Columbia Rockland Books 1998 0968326005 / 9780968326008 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Signed by Author
316 pp + Index, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). No. 186 of the first edition of 500 copies. Signed by the author on the front free endpaper. "(T)he boundaries of the guide are reasonably flexible. If a book contains significant Western or Western Arctic material, it will be included. The geographic reach embraces all the past and present territory of Western and Arctic Canada, all that was once Rupert's Land as well as those areas where histories have intermingled. For example, the great gold rushes of Alaska and the Klondike are strongly linked, and that's reflected in the accounts dealing with those events. I don't think I've missed many of the West's important books, but allow me the occasional oversight. The listings of the books have been made as clear and simple as possible, with a minimum of bibliographic description; enough ony to provide a sense of the size, shape and format of the book and a rough guide to the contents. The physical description is as extensive as needs be to identify the first or most desired edition or, in a lot of cases, the best edited; occasionally all three." From the Introduction.

POX: AN AMERICAN HISTORY., Willrich, Michael.

New York Penguin Press 2011 1594202869 / 9781594202865 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
422 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). B&w photographs. "At the turn of the last century, a powerful smallpox epidemic swept the United States from coast to coast. The age-old disease spread swiftly through an increasingly interconnected American landscape: from southern tobacco plantations to the dense immigrant neighborhoods of northern cities to far-flung villages on the edges of the nascent American empire. (This book) offers a gripping chronicle of how the nation's continent-wide fight against smallpox launched one of the most important civil liberties struggles of the twentieth-century. At the dawn of the activist progressive era, and during a moment of great optimism about modern medicine, the government responded to the deadly epidemic by calling for universal compulsory vaccination. To enforce the law, public health authorities relied on quarantines, pesthouses, and 'virus squads' - corps of doctors and club-wielding police. Though these measures eventually contained the disease, they also sparked a wave of popular resistance among Americans who perceived them as a threat to their health and to their rights. At the time, antivaccinationists were often dismissed as misguided cranks, but Willrich argues that they belonged to a wider legacy of American dissent that attended the rise of an increasingly powerful movement. While a well-organized antivaccination movement sprang up during these years, many American resisted in subtler ways - by concealing sick family members or forging immunization certificates. 'Pox' introduces us to memorable characters on both sides of the debate, from Henning Jacobson, a Swedish Lutheran minister whose battle against vaccination went all the way to the Supreme Court, to C.P. Wertenbaker, a federal surgeon who saw himself as a medical missionary combating a deadly - and preventable - disease. As Willrich suggests, many of the questions first raised by the turn-of-the-century antivaccination movement are still with us: How far should the government go to protect us from peril? What happens when the interest of public health collide with religious beliefs and personal conscience?" Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. 702 pp, 9 1/2" H. "(T)ells the story of human violence from Peking Man to the Mafia, taking into account the calculated sadism of the Assyrians, the opportunism of the Greek pirates, the brutality that made Rome the 'razor king of the Mediterranean', the mindless destruction of the Vandals, the mass slaughter of Genghis Khan, Tamurlane, Ivan the Terrible, Vlad the Impaler - - . Each age has its own characteristic pattern of crime. In the past three centuries crime has changed and evolved until the sex killer and the mass murderer have become symbols of all that is worst about our civilization. But this is not just a study of human depravity: it is an attempt to place crime in perspective against human discovery, exploration and invention. The result is a completely new approach to the history and psychology of human violence."
