191 pp, oblong (9 3/4" H x 11 3/4" D). Map endpapers, b&w and colour photographs, reproductions. "In the spectacular expanse of wind, water, rock and sky that is Georgian Bay, there is only one Cognashene . Historically rich, geographically gorgeous, shaped by colourful characters and events, Cognashene's allure is as powerful today as it was for the first hardy souls to arrive at its scenic shores. (This book) celebrates the uniquely Canadian island community and traces its dramatic journey from its native roots, through its industrial development to its days of pioneer settlement. In these pages you'll meet Champlain and his young protege, Etienne Brule. You'll find out what it took to be a success - or a failure! - in the lumber days. You can settle in for a visit at Longuissa, Whalen's or Blarney Castle, or, if it's Sunday - and you're so inclined - stop by the Church on the Rocks. And you'll discover throughout the breathtaking beauty that has captivated countless artists, including A.Y. Jackson and other members of the Group of Seven. Part historical document, part warm-hearted slice-of-cottage-life, (it) reveals a distinctive and winning personality. It is, quite simply, the essence of Cognashene." 149 de la Roche, Mazo. RINGING THE CHANGES: AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY.
Macmillan Company of Canada, Toronto, 1957, first edition.
304 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs. "Jalna, the tremendous tribe of Whiteoaks, the distant Canadian background, with its maple trees, its great lake, its fascinating mixture of primitive outdoors and civilised comfo rt: was it from such a background that Mazo de la Roche sprang? In this long family chronicle stretching from generation to generation, has she been telling us something of herself? (This book) answers these questions. Here is a vivid re-cr e a t i o n of (her) life, in some ways so like the life of a Whiteoak, but always individual and characteristic. The background is the same, the beautiful section of Ontario that borders on one of the great Canadian lakes, but the experience is d if fe re nt . S he gives us a spontaneously written account of the rather strange childhood of one who was born with the writer's eye, who grew to use her gifts, and for whom discerning Fortune gave the opportunity of finding a world-wide audience, ap pro ach ed in so many languages, retained through so many years. - But (it) is not only about a writer's work. It is a story of friendships and travel, of animal friends as well as human ones; and of a perfect companionship that has endured n earl y a life tim e, and is honoured in the dedicatory inscription to the book." Minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has been price clipped; has light edge wear and tiny chip/tears at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds; moderate br ownin g on rear pan el, spi ne and flap-folds, slight waviness along top/bottom edges of both panels. He travelled more than 7,000 miles by bus along the world's longest national highway, the Trans Canada that runs from St. John's, Newfoundland to Victoria, British Columbia. The result is a portrait of the immense land, a travel book lit by memories and imagination, and at the same time a chorus of Canadian voices, as the seatmates who travel with him tell their stories. Bus travellers tend not to be people who talk to Royal Commissioners or phone-in media shows. Yet going quietly about their lives they're truly representative of their origins and their country." 159 Donegan, Rosemary. Introduction by Rick Salutin. SPADINA AVENUE
Vancouver Douglas & McIntyre 1985 0888944721 / 9780888944726 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
192 pp, 11 1/2" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs. "Spadina has been the starting point for wave after wave of new Canadian immigrants. Once the main focus for Jewish culture and life in Toronto, the street became a centre of commerce and saw intense political activity during the thirties and forties. Now the Jewish garment factories overlook bustling Chinese sidewalk markets. Greek cafes jostle with delicatessens and Szechuan restaurants. Contemporary art and music thrive amidst this colourful ethnic diversity. Studios and alternative galleries crowd abandoned warehouse space above street level, and all along the street, such classic watering holes as Grossman's, the El Macombo, the Paramount and the Silver Dollar dispense entertainment for tastes that run from black and new wave music to strippers. (This book) presents a collection of photographs and related texts ranging from the years when the street was a tree-lined boulevard, right through to today, when the Queen Street art scene and a rapidly expanding Chinatown are transforming Spadina. Drawing on his own Jewish roots and family history, Rick Salutin provides a very personal introduction that demonstrates how and why Spadina is unique, why it has become so important to those whose lives it has intersected. Organized to reflect and even recreate the Spadina experience, (it) takes the reader up the street starting at the lakeshore and ending at Bloor Street." Very tiny bump at top corner of both boards, small slight bump at top of rear hinge. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling - mainly at top of spine and flap-folds.

Toronto The Champlain Society 1980 Limited Edition Hard Cover Very Good+
229 pp, large 8vo (9 3/4" H) - red cloth with gilt lettering/crest on spine. No. 844 of Twelve Hundred and Fifty Copies of this Volume prnted for the Champlain Society. B&w photographs, maps, reproductions. "John Prince was undoubtedly one of the most colourful individuals to reside in Upper Canada during the half century that preceded Confederation. (The mythology that had grown up around his memory in southwestern Ontario identified him as the product of an illegal marriage between George IV and Maria Anne Fitzherbert.) His eventful career as an attorney, politician, soldier, entrepreneur, and jurist caused him to become a legend in his own lifetime both in Essex County, where he resided at Sandwich from his arrival in 1833 until 1860, and in Sault Ste Marie where he spent the last ten years of his life as Judge of the Algoma District. In the legislature his independence and erratic individualism soon earned him the reputation of a political maverick. Business interests and entrepreneurial instincts attracted him to railway and banking ventures as early as the 1830s. Individualist and eccentric though he was, John Prince was still very much a man of his age." Minor wear at corners.
