He travelled more than 7,000 miles by bus along the world's longest national highway, the Trans Canada that runs from St. John's, Newfoundland to Victoria, British Columbia. The result is a portrait of the immense land, a travel book lit by memories and imagination, and at the same time a chorus of Canadian voices, as the seatmates who travel with him tell their stories. Bus travellers tend not to be people who talk to Royal Commissioners or phone-in media shows. Yet going quietly about their lives they're truly representative of their origins and their country." 149 Donegan, Rosemary. Introduction by Rick Salutin. SPADINA AVENUE
Vancouver Douglas & McIntyre 1985 0888944721 / 9780888944726 First Edition Very Good Very Good
192 pp, 11 1/2" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs. "Spadina has been the starting point for wave after wave of new Canadian immigrants. Once the main focus for Jewish culture and life in Toronto, the street became a centre of commerce and saw intense political activity during the thirties and forties. Now the Jewish garment factories overlook bustling Chinese sidewalk markets. Greek cafes jostle with delicatessens and Szechuan restaurants. Contemporary art and music thrive amidst this colourful ethnic diversity. Studios and alternative galleries crowd abandoned warehouse space above street level, and all along the street, such classic watering holes as Grossman's, the El Macombo, the Paramount and the Silver Dollar dispense entertainment for tastes that run from black and new wave music to strippers. (This book) presents a collection of photographs and related texts ranging from the years when the street was a tree-lined boulevard, right through to today, when the Queen Street art scene and a rapidly expanding Chinatown are transforming Spadina. Drawing on his own Jewish roots and family history, Rick Salutin provides a very personal introduction that demonstrates how and why Spadina is unique, why it has become so important to those whose lives it has intersected. Organized to reflect and even recreate the Spadina experience, (it) takes the reader up the street starting at the lakeshore and ending at Bloor Street." Very tiny bump at top corner of both boards, small slight bump at top of rear hinge. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling - mainly at top of spine and flap-folds.

Toronto The Champlain Society 1980 Limited Edition Very Good+
229 pp, large 8vo (9 3/4" H) - red cloth with gilt lettering/crest on spine. No. 844 of Twelve Hundred and Fifty Copies of this Volume prnted for the Champlain Society. B&w photographs, maps, reproductions. "John Prince was undoubtedly one of the most colourful individuals to reside in Upper Canada during the half century that preceded Confederation. (The mythology that had grown up around his memory in southwestern Ontario identified him as the product of an illegal marriage between George IV and Maria Anne Fitzherbert.) His eventful career as an attorney, politician, soldier, entrepreneur, and jurist caused him to become a legend in his own lifetime both in Essex County, where he resided at Sandwich from his arrival in 1833 until 1860, and in Sault Ste Marie where he spent the last ten years of his life as Judge of the Algoma District. In the legislature his independence and erratic individualism soon earned him the reputation of a political maverick. Business interests and entrepreneurial instincts attracted him to railway and banking ventures as early as the 1830s. Individualist and eccentric though he was, John Prince was still very much a man of his age." Minor wear at corners.

THE MEANING OF PUCK: HOW HOCKEY EXPLAINS MODERN CANADA., Dowbiggin, Bruce.
151 Dowbiggin, Bruce. THE MEANING OF PUCK: HOW HOCKEY EXPLAINS MODERN CANADA.
Toronto Key Porter 2008 1554700418 / 9781554700417 First Edition Near Fine Near Fine
232 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). "In a series of essays that is a road trip across the nation's cultural landscape, (Dowbiggin) shows how the national passion for hockey reflects - or deflects - the issues of globalization, regionalism, anti-Americanism, militarism, violence, racism and greed. Why are Canadians, for instance, such strenuous advocates of pacifism and non-militarism around the world while simultaneously embracing - and promoting - the world's most vicious and violent brand of hockey? As the legion of apologists for Todd Bertuzzi's thuggish play dramatize, it's not the Americans who popularize violence in hockey. It's us. Dowbiggen tries to come to terms with the absurd hero worship of The Great One. Or why Canadians so smugly spoof American ignorance while making a 'cultural' icon of Don Cherry. Is it because in a nation without rules or standards he still stands for something, however distasteful? (The author) conducts an autopsy on the essentially permanent futility of the Toronto Maple Leafs and shows how the team's declining fortunes mirror the shift in power and influence from Ontario to the West, particularly Alberta. As fans outside Ontario chafe at the Toronto-centrism of 'Hockey Night in Canada', they seek a new locus of hockey influence. Dowbiggin explores questions such as: Why the Vancouver Canucks are the new frontier? What do you mean the Montreal Canadiens are owned by an American? Why is hockey such a safe place for characters such as Alan Eagleson, Graham James and David Frost to hide? And why is it so hard to get them out once they've attached themselves to power? Most of all: Why does the sniff of the Canadian jock have such a hypnotic effect on our culture? 'The Meaning of Puck' is a funny, acidic, irreverent, argumentative and often infuriating but always thought-provoking look into the fabric of a nation straining to keep old traditions alive and incorporate new national myths." 152 Dubro, James. MOB MISTRESS,
Toronto Macmillan of Canada 1988 077159917X / 9780771599170 First Edition Very Good Very Good
200 pp, 8 3/4" H. B&w photographs. "(Shirley Ryce) tells of her upbringing as the spoiled daughter of a local bookie and card-game organizer, of her early marriage, and of the fateful meeting that turned a bored housewife and mother into a mob mistress. (She) moved in organized crime circles for almost two decades, and had many mob affairs. Although she knew little of the mobsters' 'business', she saw a great deal of the mob at play. Her break with the Papalias (Hamilton, Ontario crime family) and their cohorts, and her co-operation with the police, marked a dramatic change in ther life, and in 'Mob Mistress' she looks back at who and what she was with self-deprecating frankness. At the same time, she and Dubro both give an informed and clear-eyed view of her former 'playmates' - and of the law-enforcement officers who fight them daily." Small bump to bottom corner of both boards. Dust jacket has minor edge wear, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, small corner crease on front flap, very light rubbing.

153 Due, John F. THE INTERCITY ELECTRIC RAILWAY INDUSTRY IN CANADA.
Toronto University of Toronto Press 1966 First Edition Very Good+ Very Good
118 pp, 10 1/8" H. Canadian Studies in Economics No.18. B&w photographs, maps, tables, graphs. "The intercity electric railway industry in Canada, which began in 1887, ended in 1959. Peak interest in the industry was between 1910 and 1920, the era of Sir Adam Beck's projected radial network that would have covered much of the southern portion of Ontario. But the plans came too late and the radial system was never built. The Canadian electric lines developed later than their United States counterparts, but lasted somewhat longer, and for a time in the 1950's there were more electric passenger-carrying trains in Canada than in the United States. This study describes the rise and decline of the electric railway industry in Canada. It includes a general history of the industry, the development of the lines, their financing and control, and a brief but fascinating account of the 25 individual companies which operated the roads." Tiny wrinkle at bottom of front hinge, tiny ink mark on rear board. Dust jacket has very light rubbing, small tear at top of front hinge - archivally taped.

The basis of the catalogue is a collection built up by Margaret E. Edison since the early thirites, when TM began to be a leader in Canadian book designing: it is the first bibliographic catalogue of the work of a Canadian artist. Thoreau MacDonald, born near Toronto in 1901, is the only son of J.E.H. MacDonald, a member of the Group of Seven. His childhood was spent in the woods and fields near High Park and his chapter of recollections, written especially for this book, tells of his delight in nature. For the past sixty years, he has lived in Thornhill, and his love and respect for the rural way of life is referred to by Barker Fairley in an introductory letter, also written for this book. An evaluation of his work by E.R. Hunter, art critic and author of a book on Thoreau MacDonald, is contained in the text." 160 Evans, A. Margaret and Barker, C.A.V. CENTURY ONE: A HISTORY OF THE ONTARIO VETERINARY ASSOCIATION, 1874-1974.
Guelph, Ontario Self-published 1976 0969069000 Near Fine Very Good
516 pp, 9 1/4" H. Pictorial endpapers, b&w photographs. "Few people appreciate the significant contribution made by veterinarians to the economic importance of the livestock industry, the quality of small animals and the control of diseases affecting public health throughout Canada. The increasing value of such work is largely due to the efforts of the profession itself, particularly in the province of Ontario. Human survival still depends on animals and animal products. To that close relationship the veterinarian brings the benefits of modern science; his professional skill and integrity today defend the economic and physical well-being of all citizens. In a fast-flowing but detailed narrative, the authors review the early years of the O.V.A., its emphasis on high ethical and scientific standards and a long struggle for adequate statutory recognition. These advances have been closely linked to the remarkable role of the Ontario Veterinary College throughout the century. The book also traces the rise of the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association to its position of national influence. In Canada, the profession is unique in that close collaboration with all levels of government is constantly required. The control and suppression of rabies is only one example - perhaps the best know to the public." Dust jacket has tiny tear/wrinkling at top of front hinge - archivally taped, minor soiling.
