AVRO SHACKLETON. POSTWAR MILITARY AIRCRAFT: 3., Chartres, John.
142 Chartres, John. AVRO SHACKLETON. POSTWAR MILITARY AIRCRAFT: 3.
Ian Allan, Shepperton, Surrey, 1999, reprint.
112 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0711015139 Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, drawings. "The Avro Shackleton completed 40 years of front-line service in the Royal Air Force. The first prototype (in shape an d concept a direct descendent of the Manchester-Lancaster-Lincoln-Tudor lineage) first flew in 1949, and the AEW aircraft of No 8 Squadron were still operational in the early 1990s. The aircraft undoubtedly marked the end of an era of the R A F ' s f o u r-piston-engined 'heavies', although it remained in service for nearly 30 years after it was first classified as obsolete. Built originally for anti-submarine warfare, the Shackleton had been used by the RAF for other roles, includ in g se ar ch an d re scue, colonial policing, troop and freight carrying, supplying weather ships, maritime surveillance and showing the flag....the author not only traces the Shackleton's origins and activities in many different roles but brings out t he dee p a f fec ti on felt for the type by both air and ground crews in spite of the arduous and sometimes perilous nature of the operations in which it had been involved. This book was first published in 1985 and statements made then were curr ent . Many of th ese may we ll have been overtaken by subsequent events." 146 Clark, Andrew. A KEEN SOLDIER: THE EXECUTION OF SECOND WORLD WAR PRIVATE HAROLD PRINGLE.
Toronto Alfred A. Knopf 2002 067697354X / 9780676973549 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Near Fine
342 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). "Harold Pringle was underage when the Second World War broke out, eager to leave quiet Flinton, Ontario, to serve by his father's side. But few who volunteered to fight 'the good fight' realized what horror lay ahead; soon both young Harold and his father were cracking under the strain. His father was sent home; Harold Pringle found himself in Italy, fighting on the bloody 'Hitler Line'. Shellshocked, this broken soldier embarked on a tragic, final course: desertion, debauchery in the streets of Rome and a suspect accusation of murder. His appeal was reviewed by the highest levels of government, right up to Prime Minister King. But two months after the official end of the war, Private Pringle was put to death - the only soldier the Canadians had executed since the First World War. His own countrymen carried out the orders, forbidden to go home before completing this last grotesque assignment. The Pringle file was closed and stayed that way for fifty years - until Andrew Clark uncovered it and began a two-year investigative search. (This) is a true-life military detective story that shows another side of what many consider our proudest military campaign. Andrew Clark examines the fallout of a crisis that disfigured our national conscience and continues to raise questions about the ethics of war." Minor wrinkle at top/bottom of spine. "** "David Cobb's desire to follow in the footsteps of the great war artists of the past was a lifelong ambition. In this autobiographical book he explains how everything in his varied and successful career as a marine painter seemed to be preparing him for such an undertaking. His chance came in 1982 when he was invited to visit the Falkland Islands immediately after the Argentine surrender and, with the full co-operation of the military, he began a remarkable series of paintings to record the principal events of the war. The resulting collection, which ranges from rapid oil 'sketches' executed on the spot to prestigious large-scale commissions, forms the central interest of this book." 152 Cockfield, Jamie H. WITH SNOW ON THEIR BOOTS: THE TRAGIC ODYSSEY OF THE RUSSIAN EXPEDITIONARY FORCE IN FRANCE DURING WORLD WAR I.
New York St. Martin's Griffin 1999 0312173563 / 9780312173562 Soft Cover Very Good
396 pp, 8 3/16" H. B&w photographs. "In 1916, in an exchange of human flesh for war material, the Russian government sent to France two brigades to fight on the side of their French allies. By the end of World War I, these two brigades had experienced their own form of the Russian Revolution, had been isolated at a southern training post in a disciplinary move by the French government, had battled against each other in what was one of the first confrontations of the Russian Civil War, and had emerged from the conflict as a single force, the Russian Legion of Honor, which would remain loyal to France until the end of the war. The remarkable story of these Russian soldiers has been basically overlooked by historians - until now. (This book) explores the journey and transformation of these men and, in doing so, examines the impact of the revolution on the Russians who were caught in the middle of wartime alliances and nationalist ardor. A microcosm of the political, social, and military struggle that was to occur in Russia in 1917 and in the years to follow, (it) also looks at the changes in the relationship between France and Russia during and after the war." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - minor edge wear, three light creases down spine, minor soiling on bottom of book.

153 Coetzer, Owen. THE ANGLO-BOER WAR: THE ROAD TO INFAMY, 1899-1900. COLENSO, SPIOENKOP, VAALKRANTZ, PIETERS, BULLER AND WARREN.
London Arms and Armour 1996 1854093665 / 9781854093660 First British Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Very Good-
294 pp, 8vo (9" H). B&w photographs, maps. "On the 'Road to Infamy' could be found the very best of British colonial military and administrative talents - 'Bobs' Roberts - a hero of the Indian campaigns, Sir George White, the 'Blimp ' - like Redvers Henry Buller - a popular and highly regarded officer, Sir Charles Warren - one time Chief Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police, and others. It was not a road they enjoyed taking. The Natal campaign of the Second Boer War, and the names of Spioenkop, Colenso, Vaalkrantz and Ladysmith, would blight the reputations of these men and lead to their appearance at a Royal Commission of Enquiry in London in 1902/3 where they were asked why an apparently one-sided conflict could have cost so much in terms of men, money and material. This fresh investigative study of this enthralling passage of history sheds new light on the controversial strategies, directives, opinions and reports which permeated every element of the campaign and, as such, adds significantly to literature on the subject." A few pages with soft crease at top corner, slight cigarette odor, slight bump and wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, two corner with very small bump, small heavy bump at bottom corner of front board, light edge wear - mainly on bottom edge. Dust jacket light wrinkling/creasing - mainly at top edge, light rubbing.

THE SANDS OF DUNKIRK., Collier, Richard.
155 Collier, Richard. THE SANDS OF DUNKIRK.
London Collins 1961 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
319 pp, 8 1/2" H. Map endpapers, b&w photographs. "In May 1940, the German army and Luftwaffe drove a beaten army back across northern France to the Channel coast, cut off all lines of retreat and smashed the only port within reach; even Churchill feared 'the greatest military disaster of our long history'. Everybody knows that a third of a million British troops did escape to fight again another day. Many know at what a cost in ships and lives the rescue operation was carried out. But the whole astonishing story of Dunkirk as a human experience, of what it really meant to be there, has never yet been told. Now Richard Collier has written a vivid and authentic account based on exhaustive research and hundreds of interviews in England, France and Germany. For the first time we have, not the verdict of a military historian nor the creation of a novelist, but a narrative based on the experiences of those who were there as the enemy drew closer and the bombardment intensified - the bewildered skipper of a Thames barge, the helpless civilian, the soldier on the beach, the exhausted Stuka pilot, the stoical and the terrified." Previous owner's name stamp and date on free front endpaper, book is very slightly cocked, very light browning to edges of text block.
