William Heinemann/British Book Service (Canada), London/Toronto, (1953), Ist edition.
254 pp, 8vo, hard cover in dust jacket. "...the story has as a background the hills and the Rocky Mountains of Alberta; in the foreground are the mining centre of Coaltown and, living in it, a young girl of nearly seventeen - not a fairytale heroine, but a delightful person, natural, impressionable and intensely alive. Her name is Maggy Mileris and she is the daughter of Lithuanian immigrants, for Coaltown is a 'little Europe' and contains no less than thirty-five different nationalities working and living there, not to mention the gypsies who come and go, and the pedlar, Eli Kharam. Like most communities, only a little more so, Coaltown is full of snobberies, and Maggy, who had never thought that nationality was important, soon finds that other people think it is..." TOMIE DEPAOLA: HIS ART & HIS STORIES. (DE PAOLA), Elleman, Barbara. Preface by Trina Schart Hyman.
145 Elleman, Barbara. Preface by Trina Schart Hyman. TOMIE DEPAOLA: HIS ART & HIS STORIES. (DE PAOLA)
New York G.P. Putnam's Sons 1999 0399231293 / 9780399231292 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+ Tomie dePaola
218 pp, 11 1/4" H. Profusely illustrated in color and b&w. Tomie dePaola is among the best known, best loved artist-authors creating books for children today. His art and his stories, filled with imagination, humor, elegance, and curiosity, emanate from a love of life reflected in everything he does. Barbara Elleman, a critic in her own right, explores Tomie dePaola as artist and storyteller. The result is this fascinating, highly readable account which looks first at dePaola's life, complete with family photographs, and then at the extraordinary scope of his work - autobiographical picture books, folktales, Christmas themes, religious stories, collections, and more. She explores patterns and motifs that thread through his illustrations from the beginning; discusses major influences on his art; gives a rare glimpse at his fine art and his 'non-book' designs; provides an intriguing step-by-step account of the development of a picture book, 'Big Anthony, His Story', from the original draft of the manuscript to finished art. Ms. Elleman's thoughtful narrative brings a fresh appreciation of this unique artist-author. Tomie dePaola's followers and those discovering him for the first time will find this remarkable volume filled with over 200 illustrations a feast for the eye to be looked at again and again." Bloodlist - 200 pp, 1990 1st printing, ISBN 0441067956 - "I've always had a weak spot for strange ladies. One very beautiful girl had even warned me that she was - get this - a vampire. But did I listen? No. Well, before you know it, I'm being chased by an ugly thug with a gun, and a bullet blasts its way through my back, and - believe it or not - nothing happened. I survived! How? You guessed it. I, Jack Fleming, ace reporter, had been transformed into - a vampire! Which has its advantages. You never die, you never grow old, you sleep all day, and best of all - you can hunt down your own murderer." Book 2. Lifeblood - 202 pp, 1990 5th printing, ISBN 0441847765 - "As nosferatu go, I'm basically a nice guy. Sure, I need a little blood now and then, but I never meant to hurt anyone. Too bad some people don't feel the same about me. Now I've got a bunch of crazy vampire-hunters on my trail, armed with crosses, silver bullets, and sharp wooden stakes. How did they find out about me? Why are they - pardon the expression - out for my blood? I don't know, but I'm going to get some answers even if it kills me - again." Book 3. Bloodcircle - 202 pp, 1990 6th printing, ISBN 0441067174 - "As a vampire, I have a number of handy skills - I can hypnotize mortals, walk through walls, and shrug off bullets like insults. The one thing I haven't been able to manage, so far, is to find the woman who made me what I am. Until now. Her trail has led me to the palatial estate of a wealthy widow - and a two hundred-year-old gigolo with a taste for young blood. He claims not to know where my long-lost lady is - or who is trying to kill me - but then again, you can never trust a vampire." Book 4. Art in the Blood - 195 pp, 1991 1st printing, ISBN 0441859453 - "(W)hen the career of a talented young artist is fatally cut short, I know I won't sleep easy in my coffin until I find the killer. But the world of high art - with its big money, bigger egos, and expensive forgeries - makes even bloodsucking seem simple. And safer. Dead artists can live forever. An undead detective may not be so lucky - ." Book 5. Fire in theBlood - 198 pp, 1991 3rd printing, ISBN 0441859451 - "Even the dead have to work for a living. This time, a priceless heirloom bracelet's been stolen from the wealthy Sebastian Pierece. And guess who's been hired to find it? Pierce has plenty of hard cash, a soft heart - and a hot-blooded daughter named Marian. Marian has big eyes for yours truly - and a very jealous boyfriend. And me? I have a night job I can really sink my teeth into." Book 6. Blood on the Water - 199 pp, 1992 2nd printing, ISBN 044185947X - "There's a new crime boss in town and he's gunning for a vampire. So are the police. Lucky me. What's worse, my thirst for the red stuff is getting out of control. I'm not sure what scares me mroe: the mob - or the darkness gnawing at my gut. When Chicago gets this hot, even a vampire can get burned." Book 7. A Chill in the Blood - 327 pp, 1999 1st PB printing, ISBN 0441006272 - "(B)eing a vampire with morals is no midnight stroll on the streets of post-prohibition Chicago. In the city of sin, the gangs still rule - and they're on the brink of an all-out war. Neither crooks nor cops care how much blood, innocent or otherwise, flows during the fight. But Jack does. Caught between the local hoods and the boys from New York, Jack has to stop the battle before it starts. But how much of his remaining humanity will he have to give up to do it?" Book 9. Lady Crymsyn - 410 pp, 2001 1st PB printing, ISBN 0441008739 - "(Jack) has made a good bit of money cleaning up the streets of post-prohibition Chicago - enough to realize his long-time dream of owning a nightclub where a man can get a legal drink, and where Jack's songbird girlfriend can headline the floor show. But renovations on the speakeasy come to a crashing halt when workmen discover the skeletal remains of a woman's body - clad in a distinctive red dress - walled up in the basement. Jack may have become a creature of the night, but he's still a man with a strong sense of justice. And he won't rest until he finds out who killed the lady in red - even if it means resurrecting secrets the mob would kill to keep buried." Plus: Quincey Morris, Vampire - 336 pp, Baen Publishing 2001 first printing, ISBN 0671319844 - "Rough and ready Texan Quincey Morris thrust his Bowie knife into Dracula's heart, bringing an end to the quintessential battle between the living and the Un-Dead. Waking to the night, surrounded by ravenous wolves, he finds himself plunged into his greates adventure yet: life beyond life - as a vampire. To survive, he must quickly adapt to his dark change. At the hands of his savage mentor it's a hard, painful process, but Quincey is determined to escape the wilderness and return to his grieving friends. LOVE AND THE SPANISH., Epton, Nina.
149 Epton, Nina. LOVE AND THE SPANISH.
London Cassell 1961 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good- B.S. Biro, dust jacket illustration.
216 pp, 8 3/4" H. B&w illustrations. "Spain is a country of Magdalenes and repentant Don Juans as well as of gay sinners. This sums up concisely and colourfully - as far as love can ever be summed up - what must be considered as the Spanish attitude to love both in the past and indeed at the present time, for it has changed remarkably little over the centuries, and only now has enlightened thought to some extent begun to free love from strangling conventions and taboos. This country has produced Don Juan the greatest lover of all time, one of the most passionate and violent of all love stories in 'Carmen', the Inquisition with its scenes of extreme punishment and tortured flesh, the charming court-ship rites like the Fiesta de San Antonio, and the tragic genius of Lorca, preoccupied with beauty and death. How is it possible to reconcile the passionate guitar-playing majo with the cold, unyielding figure of the Inquisitor? Miss Epton gives us the answer - no easy achievement, for the Spaniards have never been inclined to communicate personal feelings about love either in their art or in their literature, and this reticence and pride still persists. She has met every type of Spaniard, from intellectuals to prostitutes, from students to doctors, and she has questioned them tactfully but ruthlessly. As a result, she has laid bare the myth of Romantic Spain, revealing the fundamental difference between Galicia, more tolerant of human weakness, and the severer South, which is one of the most striking character-istics of love in Spain." Light fading to top/bottom edges of spine. Dust jacket has some very light edge wrinkling, light browning on spine and very light on flap-folds, very light soiling on rear panel.

SILVER CENTRE (THE STORY OF AN ONTARIO MINING CAMP)., Fancy, Peter.
152 Fancy, Peter. SILVER CENTRE (THE STORY OF AN ONTARIO MINING CAMP).
Cobalt, Ontario Highway Book Shop 1985 0889543062 / 9780889543065 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Good Signed by Author
145 pp, 4to (11 1/4" H). Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, maps, diagrams. SIGNED BY AUTHOR ON TITLE PAGE. "Silver Centre was one of Canada's celebrated mining camps. It discovered millions of dollars in silver ore (when silver's price averaged 50 cents an ounce) and probably has as much mineral wealth today in its unexamined Keewatin ground for some future economic development. But most importantly, in terms of Ontario's social history , this Silver Centre story represents the way of life for many of the people living in northern Ontario during the early years of (the twenieth) century. The story follows in detail the mining prospectors of 1907 - their silver discoveries; the early mines - their success and failures; the depressing World War I years; then rebirth with the mother lode discovery in 1920 and its climactic decade of phenomenal silver treasure; finally, the inevitable exhaustion of known deposits. Falling metal prices discourage continued searches. Mines close - sudden abandonment. This particular drama of prospectors and developers struggling with the Precambrian rocks is a constant, unifying theme. (This) is the story of a mining community and its people, of fellowship and stubborn pleasure." Very light edge wear, previous owner's name/date in ink on free front endpaper and embossed blind stamp on half-title page. A previous owner has amended the map of Silver Centre, 1924, adding the location of two rinks and a ball park, extending the left side of the map to show the rail yard, railway station and loading ramp, and filling in some squares indicating the location of buildings with red ink. Very light browning to edges of text block. Dust jacket has a few small tears (archivally taped) and chips; moderate wrinkling along top edge; light browning - moderate on spine; light soiling and rubbing; small light stain, partial cup mark on front panel; small area of tiny perforations on rear panel; book color offset on inside surface; now in a mylar sleeve.

364 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w photos, maps. "(O)ffers a colourful and thoroughly researched account of Canada's silent service, from its unexpected inauguration in British Columbia on the first day of the Great War to its uncertain future today. After describing the activities of the submarine service during and after World War I, (the author) details the careers of the Canadians who served with distinction in British submarines in all theatres of World War II. She goes on to examine the modern era, from the rebirth of the service in the 1960s to the present, and provides little-known information about the controversial Conservative initiative for nuclear-powered submarines in 1987. Above all, this vivid account celebrates the individuals who dedicated and in some instances gave their lives to Canada's submarine service." One tiny edge bump. 270 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). "After spending the greater part of a decade traveling around the island of Newfoundland, at 'the edge of North America', beloved nature writer and host of an NPR radio series Robert Finch chronicles the people, geography, and wildlife of this remote and lovely place. From the shear cliffs of Cape Spear overlooking the Atlantic, the beaches of Sandy Cove (about eight miles by road from Squid Tickle), the steep streets of St. John's, and the moss-covered tundra of the southern coast, Finch carefully collects the intimate stories of birds and moose and foxes - and the people who share their space. He evokes an untrammeled landscape of raw beauty even as he tells a tale of economic hardship, with the local cod fisheries deplete and very little industry to replace it. Finch's ear is finely attuned to the vernaclar of Newfoundlander's stories; he revels in the particular cadences and unexpected movement of their tales. With a boundless curiosity, a profound appreciation for the beauty of everyday life and prose as hospitable and full of good humor as the people he encounters, Finch brings alive a wide array of characters - fishermen, hunters and hitchhikers, newcomers and old timers - and an island tucked between provinces, languages, and cultures, a land of ancient hardship and stirring beauty." Slight bump at top of spine. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling - mainly at top of spine.

256 pp, 4to (12" H). Profusely illustrated with colour and b&w photographs. "(A)n authoritative directory of tanks and their immediate derivatives, such as ARVs (armoured recovery vehicles), tank destroyers, command versions, bridgelayers, mine-clearers and other Funnies. It begins with a guide to the history of the tank and its evolution: the first tank action at Flers during World War I, the Blitzkrieg of 1940, the desert war in North Africa, the D-Day Funnies of the Normandy beaches, tanks used in the jungles of Korea and Vietnam, the Arab-Israeli wars and the two desert wars of the Persian Gulf. Next, there are two A-Z directories focusing on over 230 tanks, the first covering World War I and II and the inter-war years, and the second covering the post-war years. From the world's first tank, the No. 1 Lincoln Machine 'Little Willie', to the contemporary M1A2 Abrams Main Battle Tank, with its state-of-the- art weapons systems, the book covers a vast range of armoured fighting vehicles. Each entry includes a lively description and history, with a specification panel detailing the tank's official name, date, crew, weight, dimensions, armament, armour, powerplant and performance. All the tanks are accompanied by identification photographs, many of which are full-colour and have never previously been published together in one volume." This is a new unread book. Fine/Fine
