143 Jackson, R.E. THE WHEEL OF THE FINFOLK.
London Chatto & Windus 1972 0701104872 / 9780701104870 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good+ Peter Warner.
160 pp, 8vo (8" H). B&w illustrations. "The usual pattern of Katy's summer holiday on the island of Hrossay is disrupted by more than the invasion of her cousins Varen, Barney and Randy MacGillan, or even the last-minute arrival of the Ellis family. Strange forces enter the household with the spinning-wheel which Varen brings home: 'bewitched', Peter Harcus has said of it, but nothing of the wheel's potential, no word of warning against those who share its secret. R.E. Jackson set her most imaginative novel yet on a legend-steeped island in Orkney, where a trick of light on the sea can reveal the dark shape of human being beneath its surface, and can transform an ordinary girl in the street into a mermaid in her prime; where the powerful influence of an old wooden spinning-wheel becomes increasingly evident, and the dividing-line between fact and fancy ever harder to perceive." Very minor edge wear. Dust jacket is price clipped, very minor wrinkling at top of spine.

299 pp, 8vo (8 5/16" H). B&w drawings. "Here are stories overflowing with excitement and crammed with laughs - stories about enchanted fish, friendly giants, daring hunters, trained mosquitoes, evil pirates; stories about ordinary sailors and farmers and millers, and stories about characters from history; stories about people and stories about phantoms and ghosts. These stories come from the great states of New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Maryland, but they will be cherished - just as was 'New England Bean-Pot', Dr. Jagendorf's first collection of folk stories - by boys and girls from every state - yes, and by their parents, too. You get some idea of what a wonderful adventure this book provides from the titles of some of its fifty-seven stories: Mighty Mose, the Bowery B'hoy; The Tale of Anthony's Nose; The Phantom Painter in the Steeple; A New Way of Tamin' Wolves; Hi-Ho, the Mosquitoes of New Jersey!; Jonas and the Sturgeon; The Best Devil in the Land; The Fiddler of Fiddler's Bridge; Fiery-Tempered Jake; Fearless John and the Giant Monster; The Hex and the Oxen; A Trickster Tricks the Devil; Chug-Chug Along the O-h-i-o; The Haunted Mine; Cookus, Bopple, and Yeakle; The Spider on the Wall;, etc., etc." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, very light edge wear, light browning to fore-edge of text block, minor browning on inside hinge gutters. MARGARET - A WOMAN OF CONFLICT., James, Paul.
145 James, Paul. MARGARET - A WOMAN OF CONFLICT.
Sidgwick & Jackson, London, 1990, first edition.
202 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0283999047 B&w photographs. "Upon becoming the first memeber of the royal family to appear on 'Desert Island Discs', Princess Margaret told broadcaster Roy Plomley that she had be 'mi sreported and misrepresented since the age of seventeen'. Despite the fact that both her public and private life is frequently reported with relish and often distorted by the tabloid press, we know surprisingly little about the Queen's only s i s t e r , who has so often been regarded as the black sheep of the royal circle. To coincide with Princess Margaret's sixtieth birthday, expert royal commentator Paul James has written a thoroughgoing and impartial biographical study of the c o nt ro ve rs ia l Pr incess. He illustrates her struggles between personal desire and public duty, the opposition she faced in her relationship with Peter Townsend, the pressures of marriage to a non-royal which led to divorce, and the love-hate re lat ion shi p w hic h she has formed with the media, together with her fight for her individuality within the confines of the royal family. (This book) will provide the reader with a compelling insight into the public and private worlds of one o f t he s tron gest and mos t colo urful characters in the royal family, looking back over a life which has contained more than its fair share of conflict and turmoil." Minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light wrinkling at to p/bo ttom of sp ine a nd fl ap-fo ld s, fa ding to color on spine and rear hinge/rear top edge areas - lettering still very legible on spine. 146 James, Thomas. THE DANGEROUS VOYAGE OF CAPTAIN THOMAS JAMES.
(Coles, Toronto, 1973), facsimilie edition.
142 pp + map, 8vo, HC. A facsimilie of the second edition published in 1740 (first printed 1633). In 1631, Captain James sailed from Bristol to discover the north-west passage. This volume, written at the request of King Charles I, is his account of that expedition. It is a day-to-day record of an incredible journey marked by human suffering and human courage. Ice and fog were constant enemies, until at last the ship was halted in southern James Bay. For eight months, the crew clung to life on Danby's Island, a crude shelter protecting them feebly from the full fury of an arctic winter. Miraculously, working doggedly for two months, the men were able to free and repair their ship, and arrived back in Bristol on October 22, 1632. Dust jacket shows signs of water staining on inside of front panel, outside of front panel scuffed, minor edgewear elsewhere. NF/VG-

BESIEGED: THE WORLD WAR II ORDEAL OF MALTA, 1940-1942., Jellison, Charles A.
147 Jellison, Charles A. BESIEGED: THE WORLD WAR II ORDEAL OF MALTA, 1940-1942.
University of New Hampshire / University Press of New England, (Hanover, NH), 1984, first edition.
288 pp, large 8vo (9 3/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Map endpapers, b&w photos, map. ISBN 0874513138 "During the early years of the Second World War, the tiny island of Malta withstood months of incessant heavy bombing and blockade by the Axis powers. Because of its strategic location and excellent harbor facilities, retention of Malta was of utmost importance for the British. Conversely, its surrender or neutralization as an offensive base was given the highest priority by the enemy. For more than two years this lonely outpost (the sole British base between Gibraltar and Alexandria) was subjected to the heaviest sustained bombing ever unleashed upon so small an area, while its people were increasingly deprived of food, medicine, and virtually all other necessities of life by the ever-tightening stranglehold of the Axis blockade. This fine narrative conveys in a lively, moving fashion the effects of that extraordinary period on the populace of Malta. This is not a military history, but rather extremely readable social history set against the backdrop of military events. It deals principally with the effect of the blockade upon island life, and is the first book to present the Maltese war experience from a Maltese point of view. It recounts the story of how a simple, deeply religious people who had never experienced modern warfare reacted to the brutal, grueling ordeal of a war that was none of their making. Growing out of the author's interest in and extended visits to Malta, the book's special features include extensive use of material from diaries and personal recollections extracted from dozens of interviews with actual participants in the drama. " Small faint scuff to fore-edge of textblock, minor wrinkling at bottom of spine, a few tiny soiling marks on rear board. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, light rubbing, tiny scuff on front panel. VG+/V G

HITLER ON THE DOORSTEP. OPERATION 'SEA LION': THE GERMAN PLAN TO INVADE BRITAIN, 1940., Kieser, Egbert. Translated by Helmut Bogler.
156 Kieser, Egbert. Translated by Helmut Bogler. HITLER ON THE DOORSTEP. OPERATION 'SEA LION': THE GERMAN PLAN TO INVADE BRITAIN, 1940.
Naval Institute Press, Annapolis, Maryland, 1997.
287 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1557503907 B&w photographs, maps. "During the summer of 1940, the world held its breath. The greatest operation in German military history thus far - an invasion of the British Isles - was Hitler's next logical step. After the rapid overthrow of France, Great Britain was the only opponent still left. In London, the invasion was considered absolutely inevitable. Joseph Kennedy, the American Ambassador, described an even darker scenario in his reports to Washington. He not only questioned the effectiveness of the military defence, but considered the island kingdom to be in such a state of decadence and decay that any moral resistance would collapse under a German a s s a u l t . All Britain was convinced that the Germans would come. They had nothing left with which to oppose the German panzers. In only five weeks the Germans had crushed France and expelled the BEF from Belgium. Now those panzers stood on t he C ha nn el c oast, waiting for the order to send them to England. But it was remarkably difficult for the German military leadership to come to a decision. Greatest haste appeared to be called for if the unique opportunity were to be seized a nd the wa r e nde d w ith a short campaign in England. The Kriegsmarine had already converted all available ship space for the transportation of troops and brought it to the Channel coast. By day and by night, German bomber and fighter formations fl ew i nto Engl and to b reak British resistance. The Luftwaffe was to create the primary condition for Operation 'Sea Lion' - gaining command of the air, without which a landing on the English coast was impossible. The fight developed into the 'Bat tle o f Br itain ', i n whi ch the very existence of Great Britain was at stake. If the German squadrons could not only gain the upper hand in the air battles, but also destroy the major ports and paralyse British aircaft industry, nothing mor e wou ld sta nd in the w ay of the i nvasion. Those events and the decision made during Britian's nightmare summer of 1940 receive a fresh and penetrating analysis in this book." 157 Kimber, Stephen. LOYALISTS AND LAYABOUTS. THE RAPID RISE AND FASTER FALL OF SHELBURNE, NOVA SCOTIA: 1783-1792.
Doubleday Canada 2008 038566172X / 9780385661720 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
335 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). "The few hundred Loyalists who gathered at Roubalet's Tavern in New York one night in 1782 shared a nightmare of the past and a dream for the future. In the aftermath of the American Revolution, they found themselves abandoned by the king to whom they had promised their loyalty, and unwelcome in the land that had so recently been theirs. On the rocky shores of Roseway Bay on the south coast of Nova Scotia, beside one of the best harbours in the world, they would found a new and improved New York City. It would be cosmopolitan, but more refined, more royal, more loyal and certainly more exclusive than the place they were leaving forever. At first, all seemed to go according to plan. Shelburne, as it was called, quickly became the fourth-largest city in North America. At the time, Nova Scotia Governor John Parr grandly decribed it as 'the most considerable, most flourishing and most expeditious (city) ever -- built in so short a time --'. Within the decade, however, the Loyalists' dream city was well on its way to becoming a ghost town. What went wrong? This extraordinary and yet little-told episode from our nation's past is brought to exciting life. Combining painstaking research and a novelstic flair for narrative, (Kimber) charts Shelburne's 'rapid rise and faster fall' through the intertwined experiences of an eclectic collection of its early settlers, from aristocrats to freed slaves, colonial officers to local entrepreneurs." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, a few tiny edge bumps to boards. Dust jacket has very light edge wrinkling, minor rubbing.

283 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w photographs, maps. "Together with the SAS, LRDG and other such specialist units, the Special Boats Squadron traces its origins back to the Mediterranean theatre of operations during the Second World War. Originally part of Laycock's 8 Commando, the SBS rapidly developed its own skills, expertise and identity, despite technically serving as part of the SAS for much of the war. After the war, these 'pirates' became a unit within the Royal Marines and served throughout the world during the 'post-imperial peace'. Their activities have, until now, rarely been revealed. While the SAS has become world-famous for anti-terrorist exploits in the full glare of publicity, the SBS role was little known until it came to prominence in the Falklands conflict. There, SBS teams operated in parallel with their SAS counterparts, probing the Argentine-held islands and feeding back essential intelligence information. In an island war, they were very much in their element, and they played a key part in reconnoitring the eventual landing site for the Task Force at San Carlos."
