A WORLD IN FLAMES, 1944-1945. A PORTRAIT OF WAR: PART TWO., Malone, Richard S.
142 Malone, Richard S. A WORLD IN FLAMES, 1944-1945. A PORTRAIT OF WAR: PART TWO.
Toronto Collins 1984 0002172798 / 9780002172790 First Edition Very Good+ Very Good+
318 pp, 9 3/4" H. B&w photographs, map. "In 1944, when this book begins, Richard Malone had been transferred from the Italian front back to England to take part in the Normandy landings. Trained before the war both as a soldier and a journalist, Malone had been seconded in 1940 from his regiment Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry as Staff Secretary to Col. J.L. Ralston, Canada's Minister of Defence. (Now) poised for D-Day, he held staff appointments at both Canadian Army and British 21st Army Group Headquarters and he was given charge of all Canadian Army Press and Psychological Warfare service in the field. The Canadians accounted for nearly a third of the forces landed on D-Day and Malone's description of the invasion, the battles of Normandy, the liberation of Paris and Brussels make fascinating reading. Also from his unique perspective Malone has much of interest to say about the great controversial issues of the times: Montgomery's leadership, Patton's gap, the rivalry between the British and American high commands, the Battle of the Bulge, Arnheim and the reason for its failure and others. In 1944 when the battle for Europe was clearly won, Malone was chosen to go out to the Pacific and establish relations with General MacArthur. He witnessed the Japanese surrender on the USS Missouri and was the first Canadian in Japan. He was in charge of the liberation of Canadian prisoners in Japan, China and Manchuria. His talks with Churchill, Alanbrooke, Montgomery, MacArthur, Beaverbrook, Ralston and other after the war add to our understanding of the part that Canada played in the Second World War." 145 McCarthy, Doris. A FOOL IN PARADISE: AN ARTIST'S EARLY LIFE.
Toronto Macfarlane Walter & Ross 1990 092191203X / 9780921912033 First Edition Very Good Very Good
257 pp, 8 3/4" H. B&w photographs. "In 1926, when she was just fifteen years old, Doris McCarthy unexpectedly won a scholarship to art college. Among her mentors were the leading members of the Group of Seven: Arthur Lismer, A.Y. Jackson, J.E.H. MacDonald, and Lawren Harris. Their influence changed her life; the girl who thought herself destined to be a writer of books became instead an artist. (This book) describes the coming of age of this spirited young woman who followed an unorthodox path to happiness while struggling to establish herself in the art world of the thirties and forties. Against the backdrop of those eventful decades, she writes of a tumultuous year of study in pre-war London, adjusting to the strictures of a teaching job in the depths of the Depression, breaking loose from the conventional assumptions of the day, and finding love in unexpected places. (The) captivating memoir of her early life illuminates a period now passed, but her story resonates with remarkably timely themes: the desire for independence, the strength of friendships between girls and women, the exhilaration of creative and fulfilling work, and the search for joy and contentment in life." A small bump at top edge of front board, bottom of spine and at one corner. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling - light at bottom of spine and at bottom of front flap-fold.

149 McInnes, Ian and Fraser, Mark. ASHANTI 1895-96: A ROLL OF BRITISH AND WEST INDIAN RECIPIENTS OF THE ASHANTI STAR INCLUDING MANY DETAILS OF OTHER MEDALS EARNED, PREVIOUS AND SUBSEQUENT SERVICE, WITH DIARIES, PHOTOGRAPHS AND OTHER PREVIOUSLY UNPUBLISHED MATERIAL.
Picton, Chippenham, 1987, first edition.
145 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0948251123 B&w photographs, reproductions, map. "The campaign of 1895 into the interior of West Africa to capture the King of Ashanti, Premph, and senior chiefs, was led by Colonel Sir Franc is Scott. For this successful undertaking some 2,500 Ashanti Stars were awarded. Mainly unnamed and often detached from named medals in a group, this campaign star has always attracted a fairly high price but little has been written on t h e f o r c e s participating, of the march up country or the previous and subsequent medal entitlement of the participants. Written and compiled by two members of the Orders and Medals Research Society, (this book) is designed to be of interest to a l l in te re st ed in medal collecting and the research into the life of the man who earned the medal. This was the last campaign in which the British Army wore red tunics; it produced a long casualty list of dead and fever victims and was t o p rov e a tra ini ng gro und for the 129 officer, 34 of whom subsequently rose to Generals rank. Besides the complete P.R.O roll (WO/100/79) of all British and West Indian participants, often with considerable personal detail, this work contains muc h pr ev io usly unp ubl ishe d ma t erial from both officers and men as well as contemporary newspaper reports, excerpts from Regimental magazines and the official account of the expedition." 190 pp, oblong 8vo (8 5/8" H x 10 5/8" D). B&w photographss, drawings. "HMCS Swansea is the story of a ship. Just one of Canada's several hundred warships. It is also the story of the men who served in her, and of other ships who operated with her, in war time in EG-9, and in peacetime in her various training roles. It is a representative tale that could have been told, and has been, of any one of a hundred similar ships of the Royal Canadian Navy. So why this particular ship? Because HMCS Swansea is typical, yet atypical. Typical in that she participated in the Battle of the Atlantic in the same way as her sister frigates; atypical in that she was involved in the destruction of four U-boats, more than any other RCN ship. And it was in this role of hunter-killer that she was absolutely the best." Book is slightly cocked, has light soiling on bottom edge of boards, faint erased pencil marks at top corner of free front endpaper. Dust jacket has very light rubbing, minor wrinkling at top of spine, slight fading to spine colour, very small scuff mark (no colour loss) on front panel.

New York Viking 2005 0670034223 / 9780670034222 First Edition Near Fine Near Fine
373 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w photographs. "On April 12, 1954, the nation was astonished to learn that scientist J. Robert Oppeheimer faced charges of violating national security. The brilliant leader of the Manhattan Project had been cast into disgrace overnight. Was the arrogant genius, the charismatic head of the team that had developed the atomic bomb and ended World War II, really a traitor? In this riveting narrative, (the author) draws on newly declassified documents, unpublished manuscripts, private correspondence, and decades of unique interviews with the major characters in the story to present, at long last, the truth about the downfall of America's most famous - and famously enigmatic - scientist. (The book) focuses a laser on those fraught years from 1949 to 1955, to chronicle the firestorm that surrounded Oppenheimer and the entire atomic enterprise in the years just after the war. These were the years that saw power shift from the scientist who had created the bomb, and were increasingly afraid of it, to the politicians who wanted to use it for their own purposes. A cabal of hard-line Air Force officials, anti-Communist politicians, and rival scientists came together to seize control of U.S. nuclear policy and build ever more deadly weapons aimed at the Soviet Union. One ambitious, relentless man - Edward Teller - used this opportunity to support his own ominous rise to authority, to promote the founding of the Livermore laboratory as a challenge to Los Alamos, and to redirect national resources into development of the controversial hydrogen bomb. He knew that only one man had the vision and abilities to thwart him: the magnetic Oppenheimer, who led a group of like-minded and farsighted liberal scientists advocating arms control. Teller found the perfect allies in Lewis Strauss - a highly partisan Republican banker and businessman, and a key figure in the increasingly polititcized Atomic Energy Commission - and in William Borden, a young congressional assistant. One breathtakingly beautiful Washington spring, in secret hearings in a rundown building off the Mall, as the nation's gaze was focused on the Army-McCarthy hearings, Strauss, Borden and Teller sprang their trap." 210 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "(During World War II) Bomber Pilot John H. McQuiston, saw extensive service with the Royal Canadian Air Force. In late 1944, everywhere in Europe, the Allies were on the offensive, driving the Nazis out of France, Belgium, the Netherlands, and thrusting into Germany itself. Aerial bombardment was a major factor in these successes, forcing the surrender of occupied towns with an economy of lives and time. (This) is history from a bomber pilot's vantage point, as tense periods of action were balanced by episodes of comic relief while on leave. Here is an account of World War II as experienced by a young Canadian pilot with a novelist's eye and ear." Very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, four tiny dents on front cover. THE SKY SUSPENDED. THE STORY OF THE BATTLE OF BRITAIN., Middleton, Drew.
154 Middleton, Drew. THE SKY SUSPENDED. THE STORY OF THE BATTLE OF BRITAIN.
New York Longmans, Green 1960 First Edition Very Good Very Good
282 pp, 8 1/4" H. Pictorial endpapers. "Here is a dramatic re-creation of England during those eventful days when Britain fought alone and when defeat of Britain would have been the defeat of hope. How close the batle was, how much hung in the balance and how that battle went is presented by the distinguished correspondent Drew Middleton who was reporting the events for the Associated Press. The forces at the command of the RAF - charged to defend the British Isles - were pitifully small in comparison to those of the German Luftwaffe, out to break the back of the English. An impartial military observer would have scoffed at the idea that so few would be able to do so much to so many. If the Luftwaffe had destroyed the RAF, there is no doubt that ultimately Britian would have fallen, little doubt that the history of the war and that of the world would have taken a different turning. How and why the tide of battle changed, what motives lay behind the German switch in tactics, what might have happened and came so close to happening - the story is superbly and dramatically told in (this) brilliant portrayal of a nation and a people battling for life." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, minor toning to edges of text block. Dust jacket is price-clipped, has light edge wear/wrinkling, very light rubbing, a few very small scuffs on spine.

152 pp, 4to (12 1/4" H). "(A) comprehensive look at the many tasks and the ever-fascinating selection of aircraft making up today's Air Force. It's all here, whether a Hercules transporting aid to some distant land or suporting troops in the field, an Aurora on maritime patrol, CF-18s on watch over the Arctic or on low-level runs across Europe, or a Labrador helicopter on a life-or-death search and rescue mission. Over 300 colour photographs are at the heart of (this book), showing the aircraft at their best and in their operational environments. Every type in service is featured, as are some of the RCAF's earlier aircraft, included for a touch of nostalgia. There is the tiny Musketeer and the heavyweight Boeing 707, the ancient Dakota and today's Dash 8, light helicopters and hi-tech CF-18s. (The book) also focuses on the people who are the Air Force today and shows them on the job. Various bases are also included." PRELUDE TO BATTLE., Moore, Gordon.

Tunbridge Wells Misas Books 1993 0859361195 / 9780859361194 First Edition Very Good Very Good+
154 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H). "This is the story of a young infantry soldier in World War Two; the training and social life within a group of eighteen year old boys, who two years later in 1944 were to take their place in the spearhead of the British/Canadian offensive, as the pivot of the Allied thrust. After basic training, we follow the author through specialist training for infantry support groups with the Vickers machine gun and the 4.2 inch mortar. In spite of the rigours of preparing for the greatest invasion in history, life was often exciting and enjoyable, with the bonuses of comradeship, and the opportunity to stretch fledgling wings, away from the parental nest. Most of the young men had had little experience of travel, and the girls from far away towns and villages were there to be wooed, and perhaps won. The story is mostly fact, with incidents amalgamated and modified, to give greater coherence and interest. The places are real, and many of the people are real - others, again, are amalgams of several met during the years 1942-1944. The account of the training is pretty accurate, but some of the 'social' incidents have been modified but maintain the essential atmosphere of the times. Younger readers will appreciate the tremendous upheaval in the lives of their fathers and uncles - and, indeed, grandfathers! Older readers will give a few wry smiles, remembering some of their own experiences of the time." Described as 'an autobiographical novel'. Very light edge wear, tiny dint to bottom of front board, slight bump at bottom of spine, small faint stain on fore-edge of textblock. Dust jacket has minor edgewear/wrinkling.

CANADIAN ART IN THE TWENTIETH CENTURY., Murray, Joan.

Toronto Dundurn 1999 1550023322 / 9781550023329 First Printing. Near Fine Near Fine
272 pp, 4to (12 3/4" H). "This book is a survey of the richest, most controversial and perhaps most thoroughly confusing century in the whole history of the visual arts in Canada - the period from 1900 to the present. Murray shows how, beginning at the turn of the century, new directions in art emerged - starting with our early Modernists, among them Lauren Harris, Tom Thomson, and the Group of Seven. Today, Modernism has lost its dominance. Artists, critics, and the public alike are confronted by a scene of unprecedented variety and complexity. Murray discusses social and political events in combination with the cultural context: movements, ideas, attitudes, and styles; the important groups in Canadian art, and major artists and their works. Fully documented, well-researched, and written with clarity and over three hundred illustrations in both colour and black-and-white, Murray's book is essential for understanding Canadian art of (the twentieth) century. As an introduction, it is excellent in both its scope and intelligence." Light wrinkling at top of spine. Dust jacket has some very minor edge wrinkling.

BELGIUM: THE OFFICIAL ACCOUNT OF WHAT HAPPENED, 1939-1940., N/A
159 N/A BELGIUM: THE OFFICIAL ACCOUNT OF WHAT HAPPENED, 1939-1940.
Belgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs / Evans Brothers, London, n.d.
110 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. 4 b&w illustrations, 5 fold-out maps - collated. "The invasion of Belgium and the Netherlands in May 1940 will remain one of the outstanding events of the second Great War. This volume, issued by the Belgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, sets forth the official record of these events and includes all the important documents relating to them, some of which have not been previously published. Germany tried, as in 1914, to shift the res p o n s i b i lity for her crime on to her victim. The papers here published show, however, that the precautions taken by Belgium against German aggression were fully justified by the information received by the Belgian Government. This informatio n wa s dr am at ic ally confirmed when a German plane which crash-landed on Belgian soil in January 1940 was found to contain the orders for the Luftwaffe's part in a large-scale invasion of Belgium. That documentary evidence is reproduced in these p age s. L ear nin g f rom her past experience, Belgium had been preparing from 1930, and even before, against the menace of a new German aggression. 576 pp, small 4to (10" H). B&w drawings, maps. "David Nicolle, in this second volume of his comprehensive study of military weapons and equipment at the time of the Crusades, examines the arms and armour actually used by Muslim, Orthodox Christian and Mongol armies. Emphasising the evolution of military technology, fashion and science during a period of tumult and change, this definitive study throws light on Eastern Europe and Asia as old empires decayed and the new powers emerged. (It) examines the key elements of arms and equipment for each specific power or ethnic group. Conclusions are then linked to hundreds of superbly detailed line drawings based on archaeological evidence, iconography and contemporary accounts. With chapters on Byzantium and its military decline, Armenia, the growing might of the lands of the Rus, the Eastern Balkans, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Syria, Arabia, the Mongol Hordes, as well as China and India, this is an essential study of major and minor powers and their contribution to warfare during the Crusades." Very small bump at bottom rear corner, minor wrinkle at top off spine, minor soiling on top of textblock. Dust jacket has minor rubbing, minor edge wear/wrinkling.
