143 Dundas, Howard. WRINKLED ARROWS: GOOD OLD DAYS IN WINNIPEG.
Winnipeg, Manitoba Queenston House 1980 0919866417 / 9780919866416 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
111 pp, 8 7/8" H. B&w drawings. "Howard Dundas casts an irreverent eye on many of the sacred cows of yesteryear. With humorous insights, he lays bare many of the underlying assumptions so dear to our forefathers. He touches on many issues which are still current in the West: colonial attitudes, male chauvinism, the French fact in Manitoba, the revolution in social and sexual mores. Mentioned in passing are the deals past governments made with the CPR and the HBC, to say nothing of the exploitation of Westerners for Eastern interests. Whether Dundas stretches the truth or not, what matters is that he expresses the feelings of the average intelligent Winnipeg citizen growing up and learning in the most lively and witty of Canadian cities." Faint erased pencil marks at top of front free endpaper, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling; light browning to spine, flap-folds and top edge; old tape at inside of top/bottom of spine and flap-folds - some small tears; tiny scuff on rear flap-fold.

144 Dunmore, Spencer. ACE.
Lester & Orpen Dennys, (Toronto, 1982), Ist Canadian edition.
262 pp, 8vo, hard cover in dust jacket. "...set against the gigantic canvas of the air battles of World War II. (The) protagonist is Ernst Brehme, a fighter pilot serving with the Luftwaffe. But Brehme is no ordinary flyer. He possesses the one-in-a-million combination of qualities that makes him the complete master of his profession - one of the top-scoring pilots of all time - a national hero, idolized, adored. Like so many of his contemporaries, however, Ernst Brehme knows infinitely more about the business of death than about life. Young and naive, he falls deeply in love with a French Jewess several years his senior. Their ill-starred romance is a central theme of this tense, totally gripping adventure..." 145 Durrell, Lawrence. COLLECTED POEMS.
London Faber and Faber 1960 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
288 pp, 8vo (8 1/16" H). "It is primarily as a lyrical poet and a poet of places that (Durrell) is acknowledged to excel, but now that he has assembled in (this book) 'all that the author wishes to preseve' it will be found that the range of feeling and ideas, of wit and experience, and also of style, is remarkable. The poems have been arranged by the author himself, not in chronological order but according to their various kinds. Mr. Durrell is a romantic poet in an age of didactic and sectarian poetry; and by temperament and choice Mediterranean rather than Nordic. All those who have acquired an ear for his verse by reading the volumes in which it has been published, and all those seriously interested in the poetry of the 'thirties, the 'forties and the 'fifties, will wish to have his 'Collected Poems'; other readers will come to it from his novels or his island books." Previous owner's small name stamp at top of front/rear pastedowns - underneath the dust jacket flaps, light toning to top edge of textblock, very light edge wear, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Small puncture to dust jacket at the last 'e' in Lawrence (see scan), minor wear at top/bottom of flap-folds a few small browning marks at top edge. Dust jacket now protected by removable mylar sleeve.

CANADIAN IMPRESSIONISM., Duval, Paul.
146 Duval, Paul. CANADIAN IMPRESSIONISM.
Toronto McClelland & Stewart 1990 0771029650 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Very Good
166 pp, square 4to (11 3/4" H). "This beautiful volume, full of the light and colour that characterize most Impressionist art, is a thoroughly enjoyable guide to Canadian Impressionist painting from roughly 1885 to 1920. It brings together, for the first time in book form, the Canadian representatives of the world's most popular and accessible school of painting, offering a totally fresh look at a now-vanished society, and presenting a strong contrast to the isolated, unpopulated vision of the country usually portrayed by the Group of Seven - although members of that group are represented in their earlier, more intimate styles. 'Canadian Impressionism' conveys a vivid cross-section of the subject, including many paintings that have never before been reproduced. The work of neglected artists such as Helen McNicoll, Frank Armington, John S. Gordon, John Russell, and William Clapp is featured among the seventy full-colour plates, alongside the more familiar talents of J.W. Morrice, Paul Peel, Lawren Harris, Maurice Cullen, and A.Y. Jackson. (A) revelation and a delight, showing as it does a charming side of Canadian art that has not, until now, received the attention that it deserves." Light toning to edges of pages/text block, waviness to top/bottom edges of text block, several very small dents at bottom edge of boards, a few small shallow dents on fore-edge of boards, several very light stains on boards. Dust jacket has minor waviness at top/bottom edges, very light toning at top/bottom inside edges, sharp crease down rear hinge

"(T)ells the story of one of the great military elites of the past - the Rifleman. It shows him at his finest moment in the green jacket of the 95th Rifles in the wars against Napoleon. It reveals the way he fought, the weapons and equipment he used, and the tactics he perfected. First-hand accounts are matched by bri lliant colour reconstructions of the Rifleman, bringing the reality of the battle to the reader. The invention of the rifle gave a new twist to warfare. Hunters became soldiers who fought in green and hid behind cover - the days of brightly - u n i f o r med ranks of men exchanging volleys of fire was over. Developed in the forests of North America, the Rifleman revolutionised the art of war. In the campaigns against Napoleon, units of British Riflemen took on French light infantry a rm ed w it h mu sk ets. Trained to act independently and with a respect for his own skills, the Rifleman was an exceptionally intelligent warrior, the forefather of today's combat soldier. His greatest moments in the Peninsular War and at the bat tle of Wa ter lo o a re vividly described in first-hand accounts, but some of the myths of the Rifleman are also punctured." THE BOYNE WATER: THE BATTLE OF THE BOYNE, 1690., Ellis, Peter Berresford.
157 Ellis, Peter Berresford. THE BOYNE WATER: THE BATTLE OF THE BOYNE, 1690.
Hamish Hamilton, London, 1976, first edition.
163 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w plates, map. "In the year 1690 Ireland was the pivot of the European crisis. Louis XIV had sent over the deposed king James II with French money, troops and generals in order to secure Irelan d and eventually England as allies. William III, together with other members of the League of Augsburg, sought to prevent a Jacobite restoration in England and the consequent domination of Europe by France. On 1 July 1690, the decisive da y o f t h e battle of the Boyne, the presence of troops from the continent on both sides of the river emphasized the international issues at stake. But the battle was fought for other reasons which are still remembered today. The Cromwellian la nd o wn er s a nd t h e English and Scottish Protestants in Ulster wanted to defend their property and power; the Old English Catholics and the native Irish fought to regain their confiscated lands and to drive out the alien English conquerors. H ow fa r, in fa ct, di d W il liam and James represent these respective interests and what happened after such bitter fighting? Peter Berresford Ellis describes the movements of both armies prior to the battle and the scene of the battlefield itsel f. Wi th his ch arac teri stic im partiality he assesses the personalities and strategy of the various leaders - the Earl of Tyrconnell, the young Duke of Berwick and Patrick Sarsfield on the Jacobite side and the old Duke of Shomberg, the Count of Solm s-B raun fels and Gusta vus H amil ton on the Williamite side. For it was the foresight, skills or mistakes of such men which were to determine the outcome of the battle. Vivid eye-witness accounts of soldiers captured in both camps add f eel ing t o th is st ory o f hat red, h ope an d cou rage which captured the imagination of the generations to come. But the author does not merely ascertain the military significance of William's victory. He outlines the consequences of Williamit e ru le for both Catho lics a nd Pro testant s alike , in b oth Ulster and the South, and in so doing destroys - in surprising ways - some of the myths surrounding the battle of the Boyne." 96 pp, small 4to (10" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0882544322 B&w photographs, reproductions, color and b&w uniform studies. "(This is) a survey of the uniforms worn by officers and men in the three combatant navies - Britain, France and S pain. John Fabb and Jack Cassin-Scott first set the uniforms in the context of life aboard a fighting ship during the Napoleonic wars - a severely disciplined, often brutal existence punctuated by battles, like Trafalgar, of terrifying blood i n e s s . They go on to describe the uniforms, rank by rank and nation by nation, from the splendour of the admiral in full dress, through each rank in full dress and undress versions until, at the bottom of the scale we find the starkly functio na l cl ot hi ng of the ordinary seaman. Particular care has been taken to present uniforms from original sources and Dress Regulations and, where appropriate, to show back views - so often neglected yet of much interest to, for example, modellers . In ad dit ion th e re is information on swords and decorations. In all cases the illustrations have been taken from contemporary sources."
