141 Palmer, Henry R., Jr. THIS WAS AIR TRAVEL. A PICTORIAL HISTORY OF AERONAUTS AND AEROPLANES FROM THE BEGINNING TO NOW.
New York Bonanza 1962 Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
208 pp, 10 3/4" H. "(H)ere in full nostalgic glory are the Farmans, Wrights, Dorniers, Sikorskys and Martins which created new thrills in a new industry out of man's struggle to fly. Palmer has built a rare book of adventure on the airways by presenting hundreds of (b&w) photographs from his collection which has taken him many years to assemble. With these is the story of development, told in a crisp, readable style with an appendix for the technically minded. Here are the gas bags and gyrocopters - the 'Char-a-banc' and 'City of Glasgow' - the first planes to pack the mail and the first to span the seas. You learn of the early German mosnters and the facts about Henry Ford's 'Tine Goose'. You find pictured the exteriors and interiors of airplanes that made one flight and of others still flying in these days of jets. You read about daring pilots and inventive genius." Appendix I: The Story of the Schneider Trophy Race. Appendix II: Technical Specifications. Very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, light rubbing on spine with some very light color loss, very light rubbing on panels.

Shelton, Connecticut Greenwich Workshop 1994 0867130229 / 9780867130225 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good+ William S. Phillips.
172 pp, 4to (12 1/4" H). Profusely and beautifully illustrated in color and b&w with reproductions of the artist's work. "William S. Phillips is a triple threat in the aviation art world. Not only is he a painter who can portray aircraft with exemplary precision, but he can also place that aircraft in a panorama that rivals the work of the finest landscape artist. To top it all off, he is a master of in-flight action; his detail-ed, soaring work communicates the glory of flight. From the thrill of lift-off, the speed of low-level flying, the power of high level bombing, and the danger of the dogfight, to the extraordinary exhilaration of just flying, William Phillips is your copilot. Through the text of 'Smithsonian' and 'National Geographic' writer Ted Park and rare archival photographs, you'll meet some of the top pilots and war aces. And throught the paintings and accompanying sketches, you can experience air travel like never before. The finest reproduction possible is supervised by the artist to fill these pages with more than eighty full-color pieces of art, plus sketches and drawings direct from Phillips' personal sketches. In addition, there are two three-page fold-outs, to communicate the sensation of flying as no other book can." 144 Parkin, J.H. BELL AND BALDWIN: THEIR DEVELOPMENT OF AERODROMES AND HYDRODROMES AT BADDECK, NOVA SCOTIA.
Toronto University of Toronto Press 1964 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Good
555 pp, 9 1/4" H. Map endpapers, b&w photographs, tables (several fold-out). "(P)resents a detailed chronicle of the fascinating experiments in aerial flight and with hydrofoil craft conducted by Dr. (Alexander Graham) Bell and his engineering assistant and collaborators, Frederick Walker (Casey) Baldwin, at Baddeck, Nova Scotia. Bell was the chairman and Baldwin the chief engineer of the Aerial Experiment Association (1907-9), a group founded, inspired, and financed by Mrs. Bell: the successes of the Association, were based largely on logical, step-by-step development under the guiding genius of Dr. Bell. The detailed, day-by-day records of the group's operations kept by Dr. Bell make abundantly clear that his scientific and technical contributions, and his guidance and criticism, were of great importance to the development of aviation and hydrofoils. His keen analytical and deductive mind was at its best in analysing failures and propounding remedies, as in the suggestion of the aileron following the crash of the 'Red Wing'. Dr. Parkin provides here a brief description of Bell's amazing kite experiments, which extended over many years, and led to his powered- flight projects; and, to place the work of Bell and Baldwin in proper perspective, and to enable their accomplishments to be assessed, he has included a brief record of the prior art, including descriptions of the machines, early designers, builders, and pilots, including the Wrights, the Voisins, Bleriot, and Santos Dumont. He also presents the hitherto unpublished details of the remarkable development of hydrofoil craft at Baddeck, culminating after many years, in the spectacular achievement, in 1919, of 70.85 miles per hour, by the HD-4, the fastest craft afloat at that time." *Pages 463 through 494 plus one fold-out table are duplicated* Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light to moderate edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine, one small edge tear a few tiny edge tears, minor rubbing, protected in a mylar sleeve.

246 pp, large 8vo (9 7/8" H). B&w photographs. "Both Chadwick and the author lived through the same contemporary events, so this biography of the great Avro designer not only deals with aircraft evolution but reflects the atmosphere of those days. No sooner was one design under way than Roy Chadwick was imagining the next and the next, totalling some two hundred. They range from initial experience with pre-Great War precursors and the world-famous Avro 504 trainer through a sequence of prototypes including ultra-light aeroplanes, powerful fighters and bombers. In particular the Avro 504 with its 20 variants, the twin-engined Anson and the mighty Lancaster were built in huge numbers. In a swift moving story Penrose depicts Chadwick's career through the changing years from the early revelation of flight to his 54th year when he initiated design of the futuristic Delta-Winged Vulcan, ending with his tragic death in the crash of the Avro Tudor II airliner in 1947." ISBN 189633203X "Gemma Johnstone's intimate charms have earned her just about every material comfort a woman about town could wish for. But when her latest admirer expires in full flight of physical affection, she must suddenly face the realities of being middle-aged, single, and without further material prospects. Temporary solace appars in the form of Helen Chisholm, a bed-ridden older woman who is in need of care and companionship while her redoubtable daughter goes away on a two-week Caribbean cruise. The prospect of tending an old lady tucked away in the tower of a sp r a w l i n g V ictorian mansion is hardly a tantalising one for a woman of Gemma's worldly charms. But as Gemma and Helen get to know each other, they form an unlikely bond and discover to their mutual surprise that their lives will never again b e th e sa me . A n yo ne familiar with the works of British writer E.F. Benson will immediately find themselves on familiar literary ground, probing the oft-fragile veneer of morality that separates respectability from the scandalous. Only here, t he se tt ing is a co nt emp orary one - Westmount, the genteel hillside environs of English-speaking Montreal's upper middle class. 'The Mice Will Play' is a deft comedy of contemporary manners (and the lack thereof). Written in Edward O. Phil lip s' f ast -pac ed, urb ane sty le, it paints an often hilarious picture of what happens when we surrender ourselves to the unpredictable twists of fate and human nature." This excursion into Quebec's cottage country becomes fraught with emotional complications and surface tensions; but the weekend proceeds as weekends do until the household is inter ru pt e d by th re e unexpected guests, in flight from the police. The intrusion of the criminal element into this upper-middle-class gathering is perfect fodder for humorist Edward Phillips. CANADAIR: THE FIRST 50 YEARS., Pickler, Ron and Milberry, Larry. Foreword by Robert E. Brown.
153 Pickler, Ron and Milberry, Larry. Foreword by Robert E. Brown. CANADAIR: THE FIRST 50 YEARS.
CANAV, Toronto, 1995.
392 pp, 4to (11 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0921022077 "(T)ells the story of a company that started as a 'bucket shop' producing aircraft designed by other manufacturers and ended as a world leader in the design and manufacture of bus iness jets and re gional airliners. (The book) goes back to the company's roots. In the 1920s its predecessor, Canadian Vickers, built some of Canada's first bush planes. Then comes the Second World War, when Canso patrol planes were built u n d e r licence. At war's end, a group of entrepreneurs took over the plant just as production dropped to zero. They formed Canadair, which cornered the market on reconditioned C-47s (DC-3s), while developing the North Star, Canada's first mod er n ai rl in e r. In 1947 Canadai r was purchased by an American firm, the Electric Boat Company. This brought Canadair into the jet age with the mass productin of fighters and trainers, and gave Electric Boat the revenue needed to form General D yna mi cs. T he bo ok tells how unfortu nate timing prevented two innovative products, the CL-44 and the CL-84, from possibly thrusting Canadair into the ranks of the major international aircraft manufacturers. It describes, too, how the terminat ion of mili tary pr ogr ams like the F-104 fo rced Canadair to diversify into new fields. This led to two successful programs, the CL-215 waterbomber and the CL-89 surveillance drone. The threat of plant closure during the recession of the early 1970 s p rompt ed Ot tawa to buy Canadair. So bega n (its) most controversial era, that of the Challenger business jets. From early excitement and optimism, through delays, disappointments, criticism and eventual government bail-out, to worldwide accl aim, the d etails are all here. The final chapte rs describe the exciting developments at Canadair since the acquisition by Bombardier and outline its strategy for a bright future. Besides detailed text and hundreds of photos, (the book) i nclude s an appendi x with three -vie ws, lists of products, s tudies, first flights, awards, etc. - more than enough data to satisfy the most demanding aviation 'buff'." 276 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). B&w photographs, maps, diagrams. "The RAF's Air Sea Rescue Service saved thousands of aircrews during the Second World War, often in the most challenging conditions. This wide-ranging, authoritative account draws on over 40 first-hand testimonies and official reports from the National Archives, as well as dramatic, previously unpublished photographs. It explores Air Sea Rescue action in three operational areas - northwest Europe, the Mediterranean and the Far East - and features a wide variety of rescue craft: RAF or Royal Navy launches, airborne lifeboats, aircraft such as the Lysander or specialist amphibians and flying boats. In-depth research into official records reveals how the Service was formed and how it evolved in wartime years; it also provides many fascinating details of the training and equipment on which physical survival was to depend. Several of the compelling individual accounts, from new archival research or interviews with surviving members of the Goldfish Club, appear for the first time in print. They vividly evoke the reality of being shot down at sea, sometimes drifting for days awaiting rescue, and the variety of forms in which this eventually came." 286 pp, 8 3/4" H. Military fiction. "During the Second World War, the losses of ships and men in Allied convoys rose to such proportions that sinkings often far outpaced replacements. As the toll of ships mounted, the escort carrier was born. She had the hull of an uncompleted merchant ship, but had a flight deck and upperworks of a conventional carrier. These makeshift vessels, single-screwed and with only wooden flight-decks to protect them from dive-bombers, performed miracles in every theatre of war. This is the story of one of them, HMS Growler, seen through the eyes of Tim Rowan, a naval pilot - a story which takes Growler through the long drawn out misery of Russian convoys to the terrifying onslaught of Japanese Kamikaze in the Indian Ocean." THERE SHALL BE WINGS: A HISTORY OF THE ROYAL CANADIAN AIR FORCE., Roberts, Leslie.
160 Roberts, Leslie. THERE SHALL BE WINGS: A HISTORY OF THE ROYAL CANADIAN AIR FORCE.
Toronto Clarke, Irwin 1959 First Edition Hard Cover Good- Fair
290 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w photographs. "Leslie Roberts begins his history of the RCAF with an account of (the first flight in Canada on Baddeck Bay in 1909). Five and one-half years later the first World War broke out and (he) records the exploits in that conflict of the Canadians who took to the air in such numbers that in 1918 they constituted more than fifty percent of the flying personnel of the RAF. He describes the protracted and painful birth of the RCAF, its struggles for survival during its early days, when to justify its existence a succession of economy-minded governments assigned it such employment as flying fire-spotting patrols, carrying out search-and-rescue and mercy missions in the North, timber cruising for the provinces and photography and mapping tasks in the high Arctic. When a second World War broke out (these airmen) passed on their accumulated knowledge and experience to the young Canadians who, with their colleagues from the other Commonwealth countries, met and turned back the challenge of Hitler's Luftwaffe and shattered the wall of his European Fortress. (Roberts includes an) account of the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan; of the RCAF 's participation in the Korean conflict; its contribution to NATO and the United Nations Emergency Force; and its present status as guardian of Canada's three shorelines, and our first line of defence. (A)n excellent record of flight in Canada, and of the dedicated service of the RCAF to its country in the cause of freedom."
