633 SQUADRON: OPERATION CRUCIBLE., Smith, Frederick E.

Cassell, London, 1977, first edition.
206 pp, 8vo (8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 030429828X "It is Autumn 1943 and there is acrimony between the Air Staffs of Britain and America. With the 8th Air Force suffering crippling losses, accusations are coming from Washington that the RAF is not giving the B.17s adequate support. Although the RAF denies the allegation, Ernest Lambert, celebrated novelist turned war correspondent, is fanning the flames of discontent in influential American newspapers. Acutely aware that unle ss the campaign is discredited Congress might reduce its allocation of B.17s to the European theatre, Air Commodore Davies of the RAF and General Staines of the American 8th Air Force set up an ambitious but risky operation to restore public c o n f i d e nce. Because the Rhine Maiden affair has given 633 Squadron a distinguished reputation in the States, it is the RAF unit chosen for the mission. The mission is only partly successful, however. A number of Americans are accidentally ki ll ed a nd L am bert is not slow to capitalise on the tragedy. As a consequence Davies and Staines are forced to involve 633 Squadron even further; this time in an important Dieppe-type raid the Americans are about to launch. Because if it is to ha ve its de sir ed effect, their protective role must be seen by ground observers, the Mosquitoes are given the most dangerous role of all - ground support. This operation, vividly described, is the tremendous climax to the story. Depicting war time sq uadr on l ife wit h the authenticity for which the author is famous, (this book), as richly characterised as the two before it, also portrays the crippling effects of war on young and sensitive minds. The whole makes a superb war nove l." Faint era sed p encil mar ks o n free front end paper, faint cigarette odor, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, slight fading at top/bottom edges. 633 SQUADRON: OPERATION VALKYRIE, Smith, Frederick E.
146 Smith, Frederick E. 633 SQUADRON: OPERATION VALKYRIE
Cassell, London, 1978, first edition.
235 pp, 8vo (8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0304300551 "It is now February 1944 and Air Commodore Davies and General Staines of the American 8th Air Force have just received one of Churchill's most feared ACTION THIS DAY directives. A you ng Norwegian officer, Paul Lindstrom, has arrived in England with the news that the Germans are shipping out a large consignment of heavy water in less than two weeks. Once in Germany it will be processed in a bomb-proof installation. The t h r e a t i s overwhelming: the stocks must be destroyed in transit. Davies is visibly shaken. 633 Squadron's cruel sacrifice the previous spring to kill the heavy water threat has left its mark on him, and the thought of having to send his crews b ac k in to No rway subdues his characteristic elan. He and Staines learn that a group of Norwegian freedom fighters led by Captain Haukelid intend trying to sabotage the consignment when it is in transit on the ferryboat 'Hydro'. What Haukelid do es no t k now , ho wever, is that the Germans intend to hedge their bets by sending half the consignment to a cruiser berthed at the head of the Hardanger Fjord. Because of elaborate security precautions, Lindstrom informs S.O.E. that these st ocks ca nno t be sab ot aged in transit: the cruiser itself must be sunk when the stocks are aboard. It sounds simple, but for all kinds of cogent reasons it is in fact an insoluble problem for 633 Squadron - until Frank Adams, the squadron's In telli genc e Of ficer , com es up wi th a bizarre suggestion that will involve Norwegian and American assistance. It will put the squadron in great peril, but with no other option open to Davies, the magnitude of the threat forces him to act. The extrao rdina ry mi ssion that f oll ows, w hich graphically illustrates the scacrifices and tragedies of war, makes a climax as vivid and compelling as anything the author has yet written about this famous Special Service Unit of Mosquitoes." Light cigare tte od or, fa int er ased pe ncil marks on free front end paper, book slightly cracked at title page - pages holding firmly, light browning to pages and edges of text block, slight wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. FLYING TIGERS., Szuscikiewicz, Paul.

Gallery, New York, 1990.
80 pp, 12 1/8" H, hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0831726725 Profusely illustrated with b&w and colour photographs. "In August 1941 a handful of young Americans disembarked at Rangoon, Burma, the first contingent of fighter pilots of Claire Lee C hennault's American Volunteer Group. Enlisted from the US Army, Navy and Marine Corps to aid the Chinese Nationalist forces of Chiang Kai-shek in their bitter war against the Japanese, Chennault's aviators were destined to gain worldwide ren o w n a s the Flying Tigers. Within the year the Flying Tigers' distinctive shark-toothed P-40 fighters would be credited with destroying nearly 300 enemy aircraft. Chennault was an innovative aerial tactician and, recognizing his unit's acute s ho rt ag e s of pilots and aircraft, decreed that his three squadrons - the Adam and Eves, Hell's Angels, and Panda Bears - were only to engage the enemy on the most favorable terms. His strict code of war paid dividends during the hard-fought air co mba ts ov er Ra n goon in which the Flying Tigers consistently outfought a numerically superior enemy, thereby preventing the Japanese from gaining air superiority over the Burmese capital and allowing the British and Imperial ground troops to make the ir esc ape to th e Indian border. 'Flying Tigers' retells the full story behind one of World War II's most colorful fighting elite forces, from the recruitment of the first pilots, through their intial training in Burma and the savage do gfigh ts ov er Rang oon, to the ir missions defending the retreating Allied forces. A final chapter looks at the demise of the unit and makes a critical assessment of its contribution to the Allied war effort." Minor corner wear. 176 pp, 8vo (8 7/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs, portraits. "Richard Turner was a student in college when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. As a youngster, he had devoured the magazines and books that told of the exploits an d adventures of the flying aces of World War I. When he came of age he took flying lessons, so that when war came he was welcomed into the Army Air Corps. The metamorphosis of this young college student into a crack fighter pilot is the s u b j e c t o f this fast-moving memoir. The reader flies with Richard Turner into the largest sustained aerial conflict ever witnessed in history; past barrage balloons, unmanned missiles and enemy fighters, on hair-raising missions ranging from t he e sc or t o f he avy bombers (Big Friends), to accompanying the Supreme Allied Commander on his historic personal reconnaissance of the front lines, the first time that a ground general had personally reconnoitered battle terrain in the prese nce of th e e nem y. Lt . C ol. Turner's memoirs also relate the rise to prominence of the Pioneer Mustang Group (Little Friends) as it aided the Eighth Air Force's heavy bombardment missions. And finally, his very personal book shows how a youn g ge nera tion end eavo red to gras p and emulate the traditions of determination and courage of the preceding generation, fulfilling its duty in the proud privilege of serving." Hamlyn, London, 1990, first edition.
192 pp, 4to (12" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0600569764 "Featuring 140 aircraft and over 850 full colour illustrations and photographs, this book traces the story of military aircraft markings and camouflage from World War I to the present day. Each illustration has been carefully selected to show how the markings and colour schemes have evolved, influenced by the aircraft's military role and mission capability. Here you will find some of the world's most famous fighting mach i n e s , from the Avro 504 to the Panavia Tornado and the Fokker DR1 to the McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle. There are transports like the Lockheed C-130 as well as helicopters such as Sikorsky's UH-60 Black Hawk. All are shown in a variety of mili ta ry c ol ou r schemes. The fighter role in the early years often combined bomber and reconnaissance tasks. It was only later the specific function of an aircraft in relation to its environment became an issue. The bomber mission - both night and da y - pr odu ce d some subtle changes of pattern over the years, as did the interdiction role. Over the sea, maritime aircraft also needed to be given schemes relative to their areas of operation. Special colour schemes are also illustrated and dis cuss ed i nclu din g the 'Tiger Meet' together with the special operations camouflage, often applied for a military exercise or air show."
