145 Macintyre, Donald. THE BATTLE OF THE ATLANTIC. BRITISH BATTLE SERIES.
London B. T. Batsford 1961 First Edition Good+ Good-
208 pp, 8vo (8 15/16" H). "The momentous nature of the Battle of the Atlantic, a struggle whose outcome was in the balance for over three years, cannot be exaggerated. Had the Germans succeeded in establishing a decisive mastery in the Atlantic, Britain would have been deprived of the essential American supplies - above all, arms and food - on which she depended for the continuance of the war abroad and for her own day-to-day survival; nor, later could the Americans have given their vital support. The story of how, instead, the Germans were defeated in the Atlantic, is a complicated and exciting one which Captain Donald Macintyre, a naval historian who himself played an active part in the battle, is well qualified to tell. Not only does he analyse the strategic issues, above all the importance of the convoy system and of continuous air-cover, he also describes the battle from the viewpoint of the participants themselves. The long drawn-out duel between escort and U-boat is made vivid by quotations from the log-books of some of the ablest escort-commanders, such as Captain Walker and Lieutenant-Commander Gretton, and from the combat-reports of the German U-boat 'aces', Prien, Kretschmer and Schepke. Complementing these eyewitness accounts, nearly 50 unfamiliar photographs, drawn from German as well as British sources, make the courage and endurance of all those who fought in the Atlantic the more immediate; the strategic and tactical aspects of the battle are likewise clarified by the specially prepared maps and diagrams." Light to moderate edge wear to boards, very light browning to edges of boards, very small light stain on title page, very soft corner crease on first few pages, light erasure mark on rear pastedown. Dust jacket is price clipped, has light to moderate edge wear - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap folds, a few small scratches and scuffs, a few small edge tears with old tape repair, small waterstain on inside of spine, browning at edges, a few brown stains on inside.

256 pp, large 8vo (9 5/8" H). Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs. "Within living memory men have flown and fought - and sometimes died - in the skies above Britain. They came from many nations - Britain, America, the British Commonwealth, occupied Europe - and their foes from Germany and its allies, equally determined and courageous. Sometimes when aircraft crashed or were shot down the remains would be quickly buried and forgotten in the turmoil of war. Decades later these wrecks can reveal their secrets to the expert investigator of wartime events, tactics and aerial battles and their excavation can serve as a tribute to the bravery and airmanship of the crews who flew them. Ian McLachlan's personal investigation of over 100 known crash sites has resulted in an outstanding collection of true stories behind some of the most fascinating wrecks. "Final Flights' makes gripping reading for young or old, enthusiast or non-expert alike." Cigarette odour, very light browning to edges o textblock. Dust jacket minor edge wrinkling, light browning on spine and at top edge.

224 pp, 4to (12 1/4" H). Profusely illustrated with colour photographs. "(F)ocusses on Canadian fighter pilots beginning in the years following World War II as the de Havilland Vampire ushered them into the jet age. We will take you quickly through the Golden Age of the legendary Canadiar Sabre and on to the Century series which includes the Canadian designed CF-100, the CF-101 Voodoo, and the classic CF-104 Starfighter. Our move to the present day Canadian Air Force begins with a glimpse at the process of training fighter pilots. Then it's on to a tour of the three bases where Canadian Air Force figher squadrons live. The CF-18 Hornet is Canada's front-line fighter and its beauty will dominate the pages of this book. But it will not be just cold steel. You will see a lot of people herein. While many of them will be pilots you will discover that it is the ground crews that keep the jets flying. In their own words you will learn a little something about their thoughts and the way they go about their business. The world of the fighter pilot is big, dynamic and stunningly beautiful so the emphasis is on the imagery. The words are there to season and complement the photographs." Each two-page spread describes and maps a particular phase in the conflict, linking its position in the order of events to previous and subsequent topics. Graphic keys supply at-a-glance locations in time and place, while a cursor bar shows the phase of the overall conflict. The maps have been designed to complement and amplify the chronological text, presenting not only the main events but also showing peripheral and incidental information to aid the reader in forming a clear picture of the course of the war. Areas depicted have been chosen with care, to include all the zones and their implicit factors that impinged upon the decision-making of the com-manders in the field as well as their political masters. 156 Middleton, Drew. THE SKY SUSPENDED. THE STORY OF THE BATTLE OF BRITAIN.
New York Longmans, Green 1960 First Edition Very Good Very Good
282 pp, 8 1/4" H. Pictorial endpapers. "Here is a dramatic re-creation of England during those eventful days when Britain fought alone and when defeat of Britain would have been the defeat of hope. How close the batle was, how much hung in the balance and how that battle went is presented by the distinguished correspondent Drew Middleton who was reporting the events for the Associated Press. The forces at the command of the RAF - charged to defend the British Isles - were pitifully small in comparison to those of the German Luftwaffe, out to break the back of the English. An impartial military observer would have scoffed at the idea that so few would be able to do so much to so many. If the Luftwaffe had destroyed the RAF, there is no doubt that ultimately Britian would have fallen, little doubt that the history of the war and that of the world would have taken a different turning. How and why the tide of battle changed, what motives lay behind the German switch in tactics, what might have happened and came so close to happening - the story is superbly and dramatically told in (this) brilliant portrayal of a nation and a people battling for life." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, minor toning to edges of text block. Dust jacket is price-clipped, has light edge wear/wrinkling, very light rubbing, a few very small scuffs on spine.
