ILLUSTRATED GAMES OF PATIENCE., Cadogan, Adelaide, Lady. Foreword by Dame Margaret Rutherford. Preface by John Hunter.
141 Cadogan, Adelaide, Lady. Foreword by Dame Margaret Rutherford. Preface by John Hunter. ILLUSTRATED GAMES OF PATIENCE.
London Leslie Frewin 1968 Facsimile Edition. Hard Cover Very Good - Good-
48 pp + 24 colour plates (reproductions of illustrations from the 1875 edition, printed on one side of leaf only), 9 1/2" H. "By the 1870s, Patience was already a popular pastime, and it is surprising to learn that Lady Adelaide's compilation was the first on the subject to appear in the English language. (It) became, and remained, a best seller. It has been reprinted many times, but without the elegant and colourful plates that made it 'the' coffe-table book of London society during the latter half of Queen Victoria's reign and throughout that of Edward VII. The book delighted me so much that I decided to republish it, if it could be exactly reproduced. The generosity of Mrs Meredith and the skill of the printers have now made that possible." from the Preface. Contents: Preface; Foreword; Explanation of the Tableaux; Explanation of Term; (Games) Belle Lucie; Le Cadran; La Quinzaine; La Loi Salique; Les Quatre Coins; Le Moulin; Le Shah; Le Blocus; L'Horloge; La Forteresse; Les Quatorze; Le Sultan; Le Calcul; La Nivernaise; The Empress of India; The Besieged City; Le Parterre; Les Hemispheres; Les Petits Paquets; Le Carre Napoleon; La Duchesse de Luynes; The British Constitution; The Zodiac; Sympathie. Light toning to edges of text block, light browning to edges of boards, light wrinkling at bottom of spine, tiny bump to bottom corner of both boards. Dust jacket has light to moderate browning, very small chips at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, light edge wear/wrinkling - larger soft creases at bottom of front panel, two edge tears archivally taped, faint water stain at bottom of front panel and a smaller stain at bottom of rear panel, light soiling/rubbing, protected in a mylar sleeve

HOW THE IRISH SAVED CIVILIZATION: THE UNTOLD STORY OF IRELAND'S HEROIC ROLE FROM THE FALL OF ROME TO THE RISE OF MEDIEVAL EUROPE., Cahill, Thomas.
143 Cahill, Thomas. HOW THE IRISH SAVED CIVILIZATION: THE UNTOLD STORY OF IRELAND'S HEROIC ROLE FROM THE FALL OF ROME TO THE RISE OF MEDIEVAL EUROPE.
New York Nan A. Talese / Doubleday 1995 0385418485 / 9780385418485 7th Printing Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
246 pp, 8 1/2" H. Colour pictorial endpapers, b&w illustrations. "From the fall of Rome to the rise of Charlemagne - the 'dark ages' - learning, scholarship, and culture disappeared from the European continent. The great heritage of western civilization - from the Greek and Roman classics to Jewish and Christian works - would have been utterly lost were it not for the holy men and women of unconquered Ireland. In this delightful and illuminating look into a crucial but little-known 'hinge' of history, Thomas Cahill takes us to the 'island of saints and scholars', the Ireland of St. Patrick and the Book of Kells. Here, far from the barbarian despoliation of the continent, monks and scribes laboriously, lovingly, even playfully preserved the west's written treasury. With the return of stability in Europe, these Irish scholars were instrumental in spreading learning. Thus the Irish not only were conservators of civilization, but became shapers of the medieval mind, putting their unique stamp on western culture. (T)his pivotal era is brought back to life, its personages portrayed in all their seemingly contemporary humanity, its issues simply and compellingly spelled out." Very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, slight fading to colour at top/bottom edges of spine/hinge cloth. Dust jacket has minor edge wear and minor rubbing, very light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine, three soft vertical creases - one on each panel and on each flap.

144 Caidin, Martin S. NATURAL OR SUPERNATURAL? A CASEBOOK OF TRUE, UNEXPLAINED MYSTERIES.
Chicago Contemporary Books 1993 0809238047 / 9780809238040 First Edition Soft Cover Good+
221 pp, large 8vo (9" H). B&w illustrations. "Throughout history and continuing to this day, occurrences have been reported that are so extraordinary there seem to be no possible natural explanations. Yet the credibility of the witnesses - often including thousands who have simultaneously observed the same mysterious event - and the consistency of these events across centuries of time and disparate parts of the earth indicate that they cannot be easily dismissed. (P)opular writer and aeronautics expert Martin Caidin reviews some of the most fascinating of these observations. Among the phenomena he discusses are: Careful tests by scientists showing that some people really can control objects at at distance; Reports from Vietnam combat marines of huge, glowing yellow 'semi-humans' impervious to machine-gun fire; Testimony from several different teams of Soviet cosmonauts citing encounters with 'giant angels'; Documented reports of people using divining rods to find rich deposits of ore, oil, and underground water sources that had gone undetected by scientific instruments; UFO sightings noted throughout recorded history - and their incredibly consistent similarity over three thousand years and many lands." Interior - very small bump at top and bottom corners of first few pages, otherwise clean and tight with no other ownership marks. Exterior - light edge wear, very small crease at bottom corners of covers, two creases at top corner of front cover and large soft crease at bottom corner, blank small label on rear cover.

New York Harcourt Brace First Editions. Hard Cover Good Inscribed By Author
A collection of three first edition hard covers in dust jackets, each inscribed by the author, plus additional material. Melville Henry Cane, 1879-1980, was a graduate of Columbia University and partner in the law firm Ernst, Fox & Cane in New York, where he was legal counsel to Sinclair Lewis, Upton Sinclair, Ayn Rand, William, Saroyan, Thomas Wolfe and others. He was also a poet, producing several volumes of verse, writing "Making a Poem" in 1953 and winning the Robert Frost Medal for lifetime achievement in 1971. The books: 1. January Garden, 1926, 70 pp, 8 1/2" H, black cloth spine with white paper title label/black lettering on spine, black paper covered boards, top edge orange, orange endpapers. Inscribed on title page: "For Tommy Atkins / From his old friend, / Melville Cane 4/1/26". Orange dust jacket with black lettering/decoration. 2. Behind Dark Spaces, 1930, 80 pp, 8 1/2" H, bright blue cloth spine with gilt lettering, yellow paper covered boards, yellow endpapers. Inscribed on dedication page: "To G.C. Atkins, / Send your grade A honey to / Melville Cane / 64 Wright St. / Westport, / Conn." Yellow dust jacket with black lettering/decoration. 3. A Wider Arc: Poems, 1947, 186 pp, 8 5/8" H, black cloth with gilt lettering on spine, white endpapers. Inscribed on title page (Cane has crossed out his printed name): "For Tommy / From Melville, / April '47. This volume includes a prose piece, "Making a Poem". Dust jacket has red spine/front panel with white lettering, white rear panel with red lettering. ALSO: 5 letters/notes on Ernst, Fox & Cane letterhead to G.C. Atkins (George Chew "Tommy" Atkins), a fellow Columbia graduate and lawyer who moved to a farm in Ontario, Canada in 1921. 1. Full sheet, holograph, signed "Melville", dated March 31/26. References the "sporty" proposition of exchanging Cane's first book of verse for some of Tommy's apples, commenting on Tommy's giving up of "this unproductive law activity and grow(ing) something worthwhile." In response to an invitation to visit Ontario, Cane says that he happens "to be the only person in America out of jail who hasn't a car." 2. Half sheet, holograph, signed "Melville", dated April 7/26. References the arrival of the apples and the finding of three with soft spots, but continuing "if you find only three poems with soft spots, it'll be a stand-off." 3. Full sheet, typed, signed "Melville Cane", dated April 20th, 1926. Comments favorably on Tommy's idea of raising turkeys, but "do not expect epics from me in exchange." Mentions he has conveyed Tommy's greetings to Harcourt and Brace (Cane was on their board of directors). 4. Full sheet, holograph, signed "Melville", dated 3/9/33. Comments on the university's (Columbia's), and the general, lack of appreciation for poets and mentioning that he is sending "a couple of specimens (of poetry) of different moods." (see below). 5. Half sheet, holograph, signed "Melville', dated 6/25/51. Mentioning the death of a mutual acquaintance and hoping Tommy will visit. The first two pieces in this group have pencil notations at the bottom, probably by Tommy. WITH: a group of four poems. Three are typed on full sheets of paper, each with one correction in pen and one with a pencil quotation from a poem by John Erskine (a mutual friend). "Melville Cane" is typed at the bottom of each of these sheets, but they are NOT signed. The three poems ("Hymn to Night", "Petition" and "Ancient Organ Grinder") were later published in "A Wider Arc". "Hymn to Night" and "Ancient Organ Grider" were included with Cane's letter to Tommy of 3/9/33. The fourth poem, on a 3 1/4" square scrap of paper, is handwritten in ink, with crossings out and smears and refers to honeybees - it was tucked into "Behind Dark Spaces", at the dedication page, where Cane gives Tommy directions on where to send his honey. WITH: Three items relating to Bernard M.L. Ernst, Cane's long-time friend, fellow Columbia graduate and partner in the law firm of Ernst, Fox & Cane. Ernst was also president of the New York Branch of the Society American Magicians and Vice President of the Magicians' Club of London. 1. "an address / by Melville H. Cane / delivered at the funeral of / Bernard M.L. Ernst / at Earl Hall, Columbia / University, November 30, / 1938" - [8] pp (not including covers), stapled, 7 3/4" H. 2. Holograph note in envelope from Roberta Ernst to Mr. Atkins, thanking him for his "kind note' and commenting on Ernst's last days. 3. Typed slip of paper (approx. 2 5/8" H x 8 7/16" W) with a quote from "Quicker Than the Eye" by John Mulholland, mentioning Ernst as "One of the best loved men in magic". 1. The Sutta-Nipata, translated here, contains an ancient, probably the most ancient, part of the Sutta- Pitaka. It belongs to that portion of the Sutta-Pitaka which is named Khuddaka Nikaya or 'Collection of Short Treatises' as distinct from the four long Nikayas called Digha, Majjhima, Samyutta and Anguttara. Of the five Vaggas (or 'books') of the present Sutta-Nipata the fifth stands out from its fellows by reason of its purposeful unity. While the Uraga, Maha, Cula and Atthaka Vaggas consist each of a collection of independent and unconnected poems (sometimes interspersed with prose) called 'Suttas', the Parayana aims at a dramatic synthesis. Its prologue and epilogue serve as a setting for the sixteen Questions which elicit Gotama's gradual exposition of the saving 'Way Across'." Faint discoloration on cloth boards. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling, one small tear with creases taped, light rubbing, soft crease on spine, very small label from bookstore on front flap.

160 Chambers, W. CHAMBERS'S HISTORICAL AND MISCELLANEOUS QUESTIONS WITH ANSWERS, EMBRACING HISTORY, SCIENCE, LITERATURE, ARTS, &C. (CHAMBER'S).
William and Robert Chambers, London, 1866.
In two sections: Historical - 204 pp; Miscellaneous - 209 pp., small 8vo, hard cover - no dust jacket. Small b&w illus within text. "The present work is designed to fulfil an important purpose in EDUCATION - that of bringing clearly into view the leading facts which are supposed to be gained through a long course of instruction. Without proposing to supersede the elementary books usually employed, it offers a certain test of what is presumed to have been previously learned. With such a work in their hands, Schoolmasters, Tutors, Governesses, or Parents, may at once satisfy themselves as to the degree of knowledge on a variety of subjects attained by the young persons under their charge, and for whose intellectual culture they feel a special interest. At the same time - in this age of Competitive Examination - the work offers to candidates for Official Appointments the means of readily and perspicuously calling to remembrance answers to such questions in History, Science, Art, Literature, and General Knowledge, as are likely to be asked of them; thereby, perhaps, saving the reperusal of a multiplicity of books which they would otherwise have to consult and patiently study. As regards the Answers to the Questions, every effort has been made to render them brief and of easy acquisition, in regular consecutive order according to subjects; while the facts they present, based on the most recent authorities, are just those which, from their interest and importance, are expected to be less or more borne on the mind of every 'well-informed person' of either sex." Interior - browning to pages/endpapers, some light 'thumbing' to margins, light brown stain at bottom corner of preliminaries - overall sound with no writing/names, etc. Exterior - light/moderate edge wear/rubbing, light corner wear, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, dust staining to text block edges, light scuffing to spine.
