143 Snow, Hank. With Jack Ownbey and Bob Burris. THE HANK SNOW STORY.
Urbana University of Illinois Press / Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame 1994 0252020898 / 9780252020896 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Near Fine
555 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "(Traces Hank Snow's) life from humble beginnings, through his emergence as an entertainer in Canada, the United States, and throughout the world, to his stature as one of the most influential figures in country music today. But more than a rags-to-riches memoir, this book presents Hank's life and career in his own voice, with remarkable candor and incredible detail. It provides the first extensive look at the early development of country music in Canada, reveals the inner workings of the music industry (including Hank's vital and unsung role in launching Elvis Presley's career), frankly discusses the nonglamorous side of stardom, and offers the reflections of an outspoken artist who has been professionally involved with country music for nearly sixty years. Through Ernest Tubb's intercession, he made his debut on Nashville's Grand Ole Opry. Disheartened by the lack of audience response, Hank nearly abandoned his dream. Then he recorded a song he had written, 'I'm Movin' On'. It climbed to the top of the charts, staying at number one for twenty-nine weeks. More hits followed, and his life and career changed forever. Over the years, Hank has entertained servicepeople on military bases in Korea, Europe, and Vietnam. Remembering his own (difficult) childhood, he established the Hank Snow Foundation for the Prevention of Child Abuse. (He was) elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame and to the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences Hall of Fame." Minor twist to spine. Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling otherwise clean and bright.

TEN MINUTES TO BUFFALO: THE STORY OF GERMANY'S GREAT ESCAPER., Steinhilper, Ulrich and Osborne, Peter.
149 Steinhilper, Ulrich and Osborne, Peter. TEN MINUTES TO BUFFALO: THE STORY OF GERMANY'S GREAT ESCAPER.
Independent, Bromley, 1991, first edition.
432 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1872836011 B&w maps, plans, photographs, reproductions. "Having fought throughout the Battle of Britain, Ulrich Steinhilper was shot down as he flew his Messerschmitt Bf 109-E on a bo mber escort duty. As the wing turned over London it was attacked by 74 Squadron, 'The Tigers', and Sergeant Bill Skinner in a Spitfire was to claim the 'kill'. So it was that in late October 1940 Ulrich was to begin a phase of his life which w o u l d stretch him, at times, to the limit of physical endurance and at another to the edge of insanity. He was to become a prisoner of war, but he was not a man to embrace something as alien as imprisonment lightly and so he was to dedicate h i ms el f to t he idea of escape. This is the remarkable story of the man who was to become one of the select few, popularly known as 'Die Ausbrecherkonige von Kanada' (the breakout kings from Canada). It is a singularly remarkable history of inn ov ati on, c our age and, at times sheer audacity. The detailed record of the life of one very unusual German prisoner of war. It is entirely written from documents which were laboriously hand-written in 1943 and which, through a remarkable seri es of e vent s, were ret urned to Ulrich Steinhilper in 1953. It is not, therefore, the reminiscences of events which occurred fifty years ago, coloured and tainted by the passage of time, but the accurate and historically correct diary of an exce pti onal young ma n." 151 Stewart, Robert. SAM STEELE: LION OF THE FRONTIER.
Toronto Doubleday Canada 1979 038513598X / 9780385135986 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Fair Inscribed By Author
303 pp, 8 3/8" H. Map endpapers, b&w photographs. Inscribed on title page: "To Mr. Walter Loudon / an old Nor'Wester / Robert Stewart". "Young Sam Steele joined the North-West Mounted Police at its founding in the spring of 1873. His physical strength, skill with a horse, and determined character made him an ideal recruit for the fledgling force faced with the task of policing an area the size of Western Europe. Those first Mounties, ill-equipped and undermanned as they were, managed to bring order to a vast frontier and made possible the preservation of the fragile Canadian confederation. As he rose through the ranks, (he) took part in the great and small events of the opening of the Canadian West. Whether dealing with the refugee Sioux Chief Sitting Bull or tracking down cattle rustlers and murderers - and then dispensing justice in a tent courtroom - Steele displayed a combination of bravery, commonsense, fairness, and ingenuity. Thanks to Sam and the thirty men under him, not a mile of the Canadian Pacific Railway was lost to lawlessness during its construction through the prairies. Durng the gold rush of '98, he gained the respect of the roughnecks and dance hall girls alike in Dawson City, becoming known as the Lion of the Yukon. As commander of Lord Strathcona's Horse in the Boer War, Fighting Sam and his Big Stirrups rode the veldt as they had the Canadian prairie. This is a rich and exciting biography of the most famous Mounted Policeman of his day; it is also the story of a fascinating and formative period in Canadian history." Slight wrinkling at bottom of spine, tiny scuff on front board, one tiny corner bump, a few tiny bumps on bottom edge of front board, two ssmall scuffs to fore-edge of text block. Dust jacket is price-clipped, has several tiny chips and small tears archivally taped, small edge creases, light soiling on rear panel, light liquid stain at bottom of rear flap-fold, two 3" tears on front panel with old tape on inside, slight browning.

306 pp, 9 1/2" H. Map endpapers, b&w photographs. "On the night of 12 May 1944, Major Colin Scott Dafoe, a surgeon on special assignment with Britain's SOE parachuted behind enemy lines into German-occupied Yugoslavia. His mission, code-named 'Toffee', was to provide medical aid to the People's Liberation Army of Yugoslavia: the ragtag band of unsung heroes who were Marshal Tito's Partisans. Dafoe, a native of Madoc, Ontario, was no stranger to combat - he had served with the British 8th Army in Tobruk and El Alamein in North Africa - but nothing he had experienced in the deserts of Africa had prepared him for the war in occupied Yugoslavia. The hit-and-run tactics of guerrilla fighting in mountainous terrain made a mockery of conventional medical procedures, but Dafoe was a devoted and ingenious surgeon who put his skills to the test time and time again, despite incredible hardship and danger. In an operating room constructed from parachutes, Dafoe operate on the maimed and wounded, who were brought from miles around to receive his expert attention." Tiny wrinkle at top of rear hinge. Osceola, WI Motorbooks International 1987 0879382465 / 9780879382469 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good Neil Leifer, photography.
128 pp, square (9 1/4" H x 9 1/4" D). Profusely illustrated with color photographs. "The aircraft carrier is many things apart from a ship. It is a floating airbase, a symbol of power and a seagoing home to more than 5,000 men. In fact, the crew complement of a carrier is three times that of the biggest battle-ship of the 1940s. Every member of the crew, from the captain to the commander of the air wing to the first-cruise enlisted man, is trained in and works in the culture of naval aviation, a culture that addresses the demands of survival in the world's two most unforgiving professions: seamanship and aviation. Watching some of the inhabitants of this small city gives some idea of the challenges they routinely face in their day-to-day work. (This) is an outsider's look inside. Renowned 'Time' photographer Neil Leifer went onboard USS Carl Vinson, America's largest nuclear-powered carrier to photograph 'a day in the life of' feature. This is what he saw. Aviation specialist Bill Sweetman saw these superb, graphic photographs and captioned them with near classified detail. So that every enthusiast, avid or simply passing, could draw interest and knowledge from within." Bump to top of spine, light edge wear. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling/creasing - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, one small edge tear archivally taped.

PAUL BUNYAN: THE WORK GIANT., Turney, Ida Virginia.
157 Turney, Ida Virginia. PAUL BUNYAN: THE WORK GIANT.
Portland, Oregon Binfords and Mort 1941 First Edition Hard Cover Good Fair Norma Madge Lyon & Harold L. Price.
Unpaginated (approx. 80 pp), 10 7/8" H. From the Colophon: "The first edition consists of three thousand copies, the initial 500 of which are numbered, and this is number _____." No number is inserted. Pictorial map endpapers, color illustrations throughout. "Paul Bunyan is America's very own folk character. He did not spring from the legends of our English ancestors, nor from the Indian myths, but like America herself - of which he is a symbol - he just grew. Paul, like our countrymen, started on the East coast - in the Maine woods to be exact. As the nation grew, so did Paul and Babe, his faithful Blue Ox. Their first westward move was to the land of Hiawatha and the Great Lakes. Paul in his enthusiasm thought the great White Pine forests of Michigan and Wisconsin would last forever; but alas, they were soon exhausted, due to fire and wasteful exploitation. More careful this time, but still filled with a mighty urge for Logging - Paul went south into the Long Pine country. He even made the Mississippi his own private waterway, but again he and Babe got the wanderlust. This time they headed for the great Douglas Fir forest of the Pacific Northwest. Like the nation of which he is the symbol, Paul found this last western frontier a satisfying and soul stirring challenge. Here he and Babe could do more than Logging. Here were canals to dig, Bridges to construct, Dams to erect, Mountains and Glaciers to conquer. At last, 'Paul Bunyan the Work Giant' - like America, has come of age." Very small area of ink offset at top corner of free front endpaper (from dust jacket flap), book is slightly cracked at a few places, book is lightly cocked, bump at bottom corner of boards, light edge wear, one page leaf has small finger print smudges at top & bottom corners. Dust jacket has price inked out on front fla; has edge wear with tears, chips and creases; moderate soiling; a few tiny scuffs; large chip at bottom of spine and front hinge; 2" old tape stain on inside surface.

GEORGE III's CHILDREN., Van der Kiste, John.
158 Van der Kiste, John. GEORGE III's CHILDREN.
Sutton, Stroud, 1999.
204 pp, large 8vo (9 5/8" H), soft cover. ISBN 0750922338 B&w photographs, reproductions. "King George III and Queen Charlotte had fifteen children, all but two surviving to maturity. The eldest, who became Prince Regent and King George IV, is t oday less remembered for his patronage of the arts than for his extravagance, and for the harsh treatment of his wife Caroline. As Commander-in-Chief of the British army, the administrative qualities of Frederick, Duke of York, are largely f o r g o t t e n, while King William IV, usually dismissed as a figure of fun, brought a new affability to the monarchy which helped him through the storms engendered during the passage of the Great Reform Bill in 1832. The princesses, for many ye ar s vi ct im s of t heir parents' possessiveness, married only late in life, if at all, yet they have been disparaged as colourless nonentities. This book describes the relationships between the siblings and chronologically recounts the life of t he fa mil y; the i ntr igu ing characters who surrounded the royal court; and the princes' liaisons which resulted in the extraordinary situation that - when Princess Charlotte of Wales died unexpectedly in 1817 - George III, at the age of seventy- nin e, did not hav e a sin gle legitimate grandchild. Three of his children then hurried to the altar." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - faint crease down spine. Near Fine

294 pp, 10" H. B&w photographs, maps. "Between 1915 and 1946, some ten thousand men were put to work in western Canada's national parks. They were the country's unwanted - unskilled foreign workers, the jobless and the homeless, conscientious objectors, perceived enemies of the state, and prisoners of war. These men had committed no crimes, but because of war or depression, they were seen as a possible threat to public order and a potential source of civil unrest. The Canadian government consequently sent them to the parks - world-renowned places such as Banff, Jasper, and Yoho - where they were held under duress in isolated work camps for months, sometimes years. (This) is the first comprehensive, illustrated history of the national park labour camp story, examining where and when the various groups were interned and how they were treated and employed. It also describes their significant contributions to the built environment of the parks - including many of the heritage buildings - at a time when such development would not normally have been undertaken."
